We hear it all the time—stay strong, keep your bones healthy, hit the weights. But what about your brain? For midlife women, keeping your mind sharp is just as important as keeping your body strong. In part two of this series on brain health co-hosted by Dr. Sara Gross and Dr. Erin Ayala, they are joined by Dr. Carla DiGirolamo, a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist, Reproductive Endocrinologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner.Hormonal shifts in midlife can impact cognitive function and it's worth paying attention to. As both a doctor and a recreational athlete, Dr. DiGirolamo brings a personal and professional perspective to the table as she discusses what really happens to our brains during hormonal changes, why it matters, and how to stay sharp through it all.She discusses:The latest (and muddy) research around menopausal hormone therapy and reduced dementia riskMyths and misconceptions around hormones and brain healthPowerful Tools and habits for protecting brain healthThe significant effects of nutrition and hydration on brain healthSelf-sabotaging behaviors that may impact our brain health as we ageHow to combat trendy topics and the impact of diet culture on women at this stage of lifeUnderstanding your own body is the key to making smart and confident decisions about your health and as Erin and Carla stress, being “empowered” doesn't mean doing what everyone else is doing. Has anyone told you that you are not smart enough?  Or possibly told you that those dreams of yours are not going to happen.  Meet Dr. Karen Hurula, she is an overcomer who offers life experience and training that make her both unique and a needed voice for the church.  She grew up a missionaries kid in Mexico, surviving an earthquake, studying several languages, and being labeled “not smart enough” to fulfill her dream of being a psychologist. She developed an identity that was culturally complex, never quite fitting into the molds expected of her, as a pastor's kid and eventually as a pastor's wife. After having three children, she finally silenced the voices of self-doubt in her mind and pursued her dream, earning her doctorate in psychology, and a master's degree in theology.  "Karen, I think you are depressed."This statement was such a shock to Karen, who just thought she was in the throws of mothering a baby.  However, she was able to learn more about what she was feeling and eventually see how God used that later in her career and care for others.  Listen to how Karen pushed past these internal thoughts about not being smart enough and redeemed those moments to help others today.Conversation PointsGrowing up as a missionary's kid in MexicoPursuing your doctorate later in lifeUnderstanding her own Post Part-um depression and the feelings around itFiguring out her passion didn't leave herJuggling being a stay at mom and going back to schoolPermission to talk about how she felt isolated from othersHigh-functioning Depressed People are possibleHow can we support those around us in curiosityHow has reflection been under-valuedReflection Questions"We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience.” - John Dewey  1. Repressed emotion in men is one of the most damaging aspects of our society. Creating the narrative that men shouldn't express themselves in ways that are traditionally seen as feminine, is harmful to those experiencing it as well as witnessing it. Men have both masculine and feminine energy, and if they are told what they are feeling is invalid, it has a detrimental impact on their psyche. This carries on from generation to generation, unless we collectively take the time to heal our traumas and find happiness in our lives. Today's guest is here to discuss the ways toxic masculinity has caused issues in his life and how he has put the work in to heal it, not only within himself but within a community of men. Hayden Wolfsbauer, a former semi-professional rugby player, all-around athlete, and strength conditioning coach from New Zealand, joins us to talk about his struggles with mental health, addiction, and loss, and how he overcame these hurdles by being vulnerable and becoming his authentic self. Tune in to hear a story of resilience and power of mind over matter!Topics discussed in this episode:Hayden's story of growing up inGrowing up in unbalanced masculine and feminine energyImportance of finding happiness in yourself to find it in your home lifeHayden's process of releasing trauma from his childhoodLessons Hayden learned from rugby that transfers into daily lifeUnderstanding there's more to life than rugbyThe impact on Hayden after losing his momReplacing one coping mechanism for anotherThe power of pushing your physical boundariesThe importance of having supportive men's groupsHow Hayden got his dad to join him in men's groupsSelf-awareness of healingWhat is the ‘Wolf's Way'What is Hayden's biggest fearCheck out Haydn on Instagram To listen to more episodes, head to Apple Podcasts and Spotify here!Connect with me :InstagramSupport the showConnect with Nick:Instagram TikTok YouTube
