Melissa is a Certified Holistic Health and Life Coach.  After dealing with her struggles with food for most of her life, Melissa decided that after she had her daughter, the last thing she wanted was to have her daughter continue in that battle.  Melissa decided to change her relationship with food and dieting, and she has also made it her life's mission to help others.     Researchers have found that women who experienced traumatic events in their lifetime were 11% more likely to become obese than women who had not encountered such events.  Obsessive dieting and food triggers, such as compulsive eating, can directly correlate to trauma. Is there trauma in your life that you may have projected into how you control your diet or your eating? It is something to dive into.  I know my eating habit as a teen and even into college was binge and purge. After a traumatic sexual experience, eating was one of the things I could completely control, and it was my way of taking back the power that was taken from me.     Although I no longer struggle with bulimia, I struggle with overeating and eating to soothe my emotions.  I loved speaking with Melissa because I need to remember to look at food as a helpful tool, not something to dread or worship.  Looking at food as nutritious and not tainted is so freeing. Food is a blessing, and the relationship can be healthy and enjoyable.  Cheers to chips, salsa, and starchy, fatty, salty goodness in moderation! I know. I know. Just what you wanted right before the holidays! That's exactly why I chose to publish this podcast about eating well post-Halloween, and pre-Thanksgiving here in the US. It's because I needed to be reminded of eating well, for health and well-being--and where eating unconsciously, or to "eat my feelings" backfires. Welcome to this honest and practical conversation with Melissa Rohlfs, a Board certified health and life coach, who understands all too well what it feels like to stuff feelings, treat emotions with the sugar demon, and how out of control and serious this really can be. And how it isn't our fault. How a multi-billion dollar industry has gamed us into eating more. And more importantly, how we can give ourselves the gift of eating for health and well-being--and the grace to be human. We talk about some of the solutions Melissa has found over her years as a health and life coach, and she lets you in on them right here, on the Fully Mindful. In fact, that's kind of her style—generous and real. She offers a free guide to body freedom and peace, and if you're interested, follow her on instagram and set up a call with her. With trauma can come eating disorders. Sexual assault victims often gain weight as a subconscious way of protecting themselves from future assaults. On top of that, you have the SAD diet (Standard American Diet) being taught everywhere when in reality, the SAD diet is absolutely unhealthy. Add the price of healthy eating vs. processed foods into the mix and you have a recipe for disaster. Sugar addiction has been said to be as hard to break (or harder) than drugs. Sugar is everywhere...and unless you are eating 110% clean, you'll come across it. At one point in Melissa Rohlfs' motherhood journey, she was crabby, living off of sugar, exhausted, and 30 pounds heavier. Instead of processing through her feelings, she stuffed them with food Little did she know that the very food deemed “healthy” that Melissa ate on a daily basis was working against her rather than for her. Once she removed those foods and learned about eating whole foods, everything changed. Today Melissa offers help and hope to the mama who feels overwhelmed, stuck and wants freedom to enjoy life AND motherhood Happy. Healthy. Free.

A 2017 survey by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that money, work, crime, violence, the political climate and the future of the nation are all significant stressors for Americans, each plaguing more than half of the survey respondents. While stress is bad for the body, the ways people deal with it can be just as unhealthy. The APA found in a different survey that almost 40% of adults reported overeating or consuming junk food in response to stress during the prior month.
