Welcome to another Industry Night. I've been taking it a little slow for the month of January. I wanted time for a little refresh. I have been so fortunate to be able to share such incredible stories from people who do the work on this show. It's really an honor. I am amazed and grateful, especially when I look over all the shows from the past year. If you listen to the show — you can also see what we are doing on YouTube — which makes it so much fun for me. Adding the YouTube component has been such a game-changer. You can see me at the WineLair, The Point, and The Watermark Hotel — these residencies have been so unique. AND so much to come in 2024. More and more and more in 2024. And that starts with my guest today. So you hear me talk about my other show - Foodie And The Beast — it's been on for 15 years — I know you know! But I've had mostly AMAZING shows in the 15 years of that show. Once in a while, a guest gets nervous or struggles. Still, it is usually all salvageable — well, a few months ago — Emma Jagoz, this incredible first-generation organic vegetable farmer who founded Moon Valley Farm, was on, and every other guest — EVERY other guest --  did not have it that day. Emma has such a terrific story, and it kind of got overshadowed by what wasn't happening in the studio. I was disappointed and honestly a bit angry. But we can talk about media training or being ready for an interview on another day. Actually, I think I am going to do a quick little video on that! Ok — and I was hoping Emma wouldn't hold it against me when I asked her to join me on this show. Moon Valley Farm is this year-round certified organic vegetable farm. It's an Online Farmers Market for home delivery; it has a 600+ member Community-Supported Agriculture program; it services many of the restaurants you eat in and school systems — I mean! Anyway — we will get into Emma and how she makes her garden grow in a just a second, first I'm going to tell you where I have been: So you know, I have been out and about — -Amparo Fondita - Fab Mexican cuisine by Chef Christian Irabien -RAMW Annual Holiday Party at the Park on 14th -Late Night Dining at Old Ebbitt -High Tea at the St. Regis -Immigrant Food Serves Up Lunch at Planet Word -Back at the Glorious Casa Teresa Now to Emma Jagoz of Mood Valley Farm. Emma grew Moon Valley from a one-woman show cultivating ¼ acre for 12 people to employing 20, cultivating 70 acres and feeding thousands. Let's get into it -- Emma! Denise El Habach (BryantDee@gmail.com) is a High School Counselor in Phoenix, Arizona. When we talked in April, she was just about to send off the graduating class of 2020 from Moon Valley High School. Denise was surprised to discover in the quarantine just how much she was able to reach out and help students and parents. As for lows, she was sad for the high school seniors who missed out on the rites of passage that come with prom, graduation, and moving on to adulthood. Her watershed moment was Friday, March 13th when her family was driving back to Phoenix from California. "It seemed like it just exploded." She and her husband were shocked when they went to the grocery store and saw the shelves were empty. "Okay," they said, "this is happening."When we talked, Denise wasn't sure how the school was going to celebrate commencement. Moon Valley ultimately did a virtual graduation in May 2020. She missed her family, rolling the windows down in her car, and small, convenient things. On the first episode of Illuminate Your Plate, I chat with Maryland farmer Emma Jagoz of Moon Valley Farm, who has had to change her business model to respond to the changing environment caused by this pandemic. I speak with Emma about why she became a farmer, why it's important to support local farms and how she's been able to shift her business from mostly serving restaurants through the winter and spring, to connecting with more consumers through her CSA program. Emma talks to us about her hashtag Local is the New Normal and why it's better to wait for the best produce of the season than eat the poor quality stuff traveling thousands of miles.

Between Thursday of one week and Tuesday of the following week, Emma Jagoz, owner and farmer at Moon Valley Farms, completely pivoted her business. One week 100% of her produce was serving the best restaurants in the Baltimore, DC, and Frederick areas. By the next week, she had opened her CSA early to provide fresh, safe food to her local community AND, by partnering with local organizations, she was also supplying shares to out-of-work restaurant workers. If this sounds amazing to you, as it did to me, consider  that with 2 kids under the age of 2, Emma started this farm in her parents backyard, growing it over the last 9 years to serve up to 100 local restaurants and 250 CSA members. Emma makes a habit of doing great things… and the best thing, is that she invites us to do them with her. Listen to Emma Now About the Carryout in COVID Series Of all the conflicting information we're receiving these days, I'm having the most difficulty reconciling the call to support small, local businesses with the command to stay home as much as possible. Can I support small restaurants without contributing to the spread of the virus? I felt the best way to answer this question was to hear the stories of businesses in crisis and ask THEM my questions. A variety of guests including owners, farmers, and journalists, are participating in this series, so make sure you check back to get a new perspective each day. Highlights of This Episode Starting with 2 children 2 and under From a backyard plot to serving 100 restaurants and 250 CSA members All injustice boils down to food access Pivoting over a weekend from 100% restaurant sales to open the CSA early New procedures to keep employees and customers safe Partnering with her community and organizations to provide shares to out-of-work restaurant workers How To Find and Follow Fish Scale Restaurant Website: Moon Valley Farm Instagram: @moonvalleyfarm Facebook: www.facebook.com/moonvalleybaltimore How to Find and Support Emma's Partners in Providing Fresh Food to Out-of-Work Restaurant Workers Friends and Family Meal DC: www.friendsandfamilymeal.com Friends and Family Meal on Instagram: @friendsandfamilymeal Woodberry Kitchen Website: www.woodberrykitchen.com Woodberry Kitchen on Instagram: @woodberrykitchen How to Find Meghan Bakes Cookies Thanks to Meghan for connecting me to Moon Valley Farms and for brightening my days with her beautiful designs!!!
