In today's episode of my MythBuster series, I'm talking about one of the most persistent beliefs in the interior design industry: that you need design school to succeed. This one hits close to home for me, because I didn't go to design school — and for a long time, I carried that quietly, wondering if it would eventually expose me as someone who didn't belong. What I've learned over the years, though, is that this myth doesn't just affect designers without formal education. It affects everyone. What I see again and again is this gap — the gap between learning how to design and learning how to run a business. And no matter how you entered this industry, almost every designer hits it eventually. In this episode, I talk about: Why not going to design school does not disqualify you — and why going doesn't automatically prepare you either The real gap most designers face between creativity and business ownership How education and preparedness are often confused (and why that leads to self-doubt) The emotional weight of business ownership that no one warns designers about Why burnout is usually a systems problem, not a personal failure The identity shift required to move from "designer" to confident business owner At the end of the day, designing beautiful spaces is only part of the job. Running a sustainable interior design business requires an entirely different skill set — one that can be learned intentionally, without shame, and without burning yourself out in the process. If you've ever felt like everyone else has a manual you never received, I want you to hear this clearly: you're not behind, you're not missing something, and you're not failing. You've simply reached the part of the journey where leadership matters more than talent. The FDA's new Quality Management System Regulation (QMSR), which replaces the 21 CFR Part 820 Quality System Regulation (QSR) and incorporates ISO 13485:2016 by reference, represents a significant harmonization effort in the medical device industry. While viewed by some as a mere streamlining, the change is mandatory, with an effective and fully enforceable date of February 2, 2026. The episode addresses industry complacency and details critical steps manufacturers must take immediately.The episode debunks the myth that familiar quality documents like the DHF, DMR, and DHR are being eliminated. While the specific terms are removed from the regulation's language, their substance is retained and mapped to new, ISO-aligned conceptual requirements: the Device Master Record (DMR) becomes the Medical Device File (MDF), the Design History File (DHF) becomes the Design and Development File (DDP), and the Device History Record (DHR) is captured in the Batch or Lot Record. The host emphasizes that internal documents can retain the old terminology, provided a clear regulatory mapping is established.Crucially, compliance requires more than just an ISO 13485 certificate. Two major philosophical shifts must be addressed: the explicit requirement for integrating lifecycle risk management as the DNA of the entire QMS, and the loss of the audit privilege, which makes internal audit reports, supplier audit reports, and management review records inspectable regulatory evidence. Many of us grow up hearing stories about our family's background. Maybe your grandmother insisted her side of the family was “pure Irish.” Or perhaps your grandfather proudly declared that his ancestors were “completely German, no mixture at all.” In some households, there is even the belief that one particular ancestor was “full-blooded Cherokee,” “100 percent Scottish,” or “pure Italian.” These stories are often told with pride. They give families a sense of identity and belonging. But when we hold them up to the light of history and genealogy, a different picture emerges. The idea that an ancestor was “100 percent” one ethnicity is rarely true, and it is almost never as simple as the stories make it sound. The myth of pure ethnicity is powerful because it speaks to human longing. People like neat boxes and clear categories. We want to know where we come from. We want to say, with confidence, “My ancestors were entirely Irish,” or “We have nothing but German blood.” The problem is, history is messy, borders change, and people have always moved, married, and mixed. This time, we are going to explore why the myth of pure ethnicity exists, where it came from, how DNA testing complicates it, and what the records really show. By the end, you'll see that your ancestors, like everyone else's, were part of a long story of blending, migration, and mixing. One of the most tempting shortcuts in genealogy is the idea of the “master family tree.” A single, giant, authoritative tree where everyone is already linked, all the names and dates are correct, and all you have to do is plug your family into the right spot.
