This week, we discuss two films which feature wrestling. The first is Paradise Alley (1978), an American sports drama written, directed by, and starring Sylvester Stallone (in his feature directorial debut). The film tells the story of three Italian American brothers in Hell's Kitchen in the 1940s who become involved in professional wrestling. The second is The Iron Claw (2023), a biographical sports drama written and directed by Sean Durkin about the Von Erichs, a family of professional wrestlers who are "cursed" by constant tragedy. On this week's episode Phillip is joined for the first time by Craig MacNeil from Craig & Friends podcast which is available wherever you get your podcast. Maybe you heard him on episode 6 of The Gala Show podcast. Phillip and Craig had a really fun time and went on lots of tangents, but it was worth it. This episode as you can see is all about 1978's Paradise Alley and their thoughts on this Sylvester Stallone written and directed movie, (he also sings the main theme). They read the general information about the film and hear from the listener's from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. It's then time to discuss their thoughts on this movie, and Phillip is a little torn at first. They talk about Quentin's love of Stallone, and then they rate the film. Then Phillip gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; Two Evil Eyes (1990). Craig talks about some of the films that he has been watching or wants to recommend. Phillip then promotes next week's show when he will be joined once again by Paul Rowlands from www.money-into-light.com when they discuss The Devil's (1971). Hope you enjoyed the show and thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message
On this episode Phillip is joined by Rob Papp from The Cinemigos Podcast and The Circle of Jerks Podcast, to discuss the 4th film in the Matt Helm series, The Wrecking Crew. Phillip starts the show by talking about about his trip to L.A. where he went to the New Beverly Cinema, met Rob and Craig (from Craig & Friends Podcast) in person and had a great time. Rob and Phillip then talk quickly about the first 3 Matt Helm movies. They then take a moment of silence for Sharon Tate. It's then time for the first Tarantino Talks segment. Phillip then reads the general information for the movie and Rob and him add some facts and trivia throughout. Phillip then talks about how Erik asked him to write and record a retrospective on The Walking Tall that will then appear on Erik's Youtube channel Cinema Force. https://www.youtube.com/@cinemaforce1 Then it's time for Listener Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. It's then time for the second Tarantino Talks segment about The Wrecking Crew. Phillip and Rob then discuss their feelings on the movie. At the end of their discussion then it's time for the 3rd Tarantino Talks segment. They wrap up the discussion with some more small facts. It's then time for the questions; Did they see anything that QT might have liked or used in a film, What do they rate the movie out of 5 stars, and Would they buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free? Phillip then gives his Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (1971). Rob then shares some movies that he has watched and bought recently. It's then time for Phillip to talk about what's coming up. Come back on March 1st when Phillip will be joined by Craig MacNeil from the Craig & Friends Podcast for 1978's Paradise Alley. We hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message

If you have a buck instead of a book... we read so you don't have to. Finally some practical knowledge is gained by reading Quentin Tarantino's Cinema Speculation: if you need a man you can count on in a brothel, Tommy Lee Jones is your guy. QT calls this the greatest combination of character study and action movie ever made and we try to keep up with his praise by praising a film where a man can't stand his wife and child. But more than that he can't stand someone taking away his wife and child... that he can't stand. Enjoy! Enjoy and keep reading along with us from Quentin Tarantino's CINEMA SPECULATION! Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter returns to pay tribute to his friend and mentor, and one of the greatest wrestlers in the business, Terry Funk. Dave recalls the first time he met Terry, how they became such good friends, and the best advice he ever received from him. Dave and Chris also talk about The Funk Brothers as a tag team, Terry and Dory Jr's in-ring chemistry and relationship, and what they learned from their father Dory Sr. They discuss some of Terry's great singles feuds and matches including Jerry Lawler, and his ”I Quit” match against Ric Flair. They talk about Terry and the Funk Brothers in Japan, WCW, the NWA, and the WWE, and why things didn't really work out with Vince McMahon. And they delve into Terry Funk's acting aspirations, including his roles in “Road House” and “Paradise Alley,” his friendship with Sylvester Stallone, and how he got Hulk Hogan the part in “Rocky 3.” Thank you for supporting our sponsors!Fan Duel: Visit https://FanDuel.com/JERICHO and start earning Bonus Bets with America's #1 SportsbookHello Fresh: Go to https://HelloFresh.com/50JERICHO and use code 50JERICHO to get 50% off plus 15% off your next two months.Factor Meals: Go to https://FactorMeals.com/TIJ50 and use promo code TIJ50 to get 50% off.Bosch Tools: Learn more at https://www.boschtools.com/us/en/Progressive: Quote today at https://progressive.comeBay Motors: Get the right parts, the right fit, and the right prices. https://ebaymotors.comSlingTV: Check out https://www.sling.com/ for special offers STAY CONNECTED:TikTok: @ChrisJerichoInstagram: @talkisjericho @chrisjerichofozzy Twitter: @TalkIsJericho @IAmJerichoYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisJerichoFozzyWebsite: https://www.webisjericho.com/
On Aug 23 2023 the world lost one of the greatest pro wrestlers of all time. But Terry Funk was so much more than just a wrestler, he was a showman, an actor, a legend, but more importantly, he was a father to two wonderful daughter and a dear friend. Terrence "Terry" Funk had a wrestling career that lasted more than 50 years. He was one of the most respected men in the business, a headliner in every territory of the United States, and in Japan he was a superstar, an icon, and one of the most beloved pop culture icons. He was even a movie star, appearing in films such as Paradise Alley, Over The Top, The Ringer and most notably the cult classic Road House. But more than anything he was a proud father, many times he me would tell how proud he was of his daughters, and how much family meant to him. The friendship I developed with Terry of the last several years of his life mean more to me than a few words here could ever express, Please welcome Rodney West and Terry Sullivan to the show, two men who have been around the world of wrestling their whole lives. The three of us talk about Terry, his work, his status in the business, what he meant to the world of wrestling, and what he meant to us on a more personal level. Rest in peace my friend, and you have no idea how honored I was to call you friend!! Terrence Funk June 30th 1944 - August 23rd 2023

Paradise Alley is a weird 70s movie written and directed by Sly. This is when he was still trying to be Pacino. Also it's all about 3 brothers. And fans of the show know that we love brothers. It's an unusual and zany film that works really well despite some tonal problems. The premise is that three working class Italian American brothers are trying to make it in 1940's NYC. The Frank Stallone Documentary - 'Stallone: Frank, That Is' Available in Canada on Youtube & Google Play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UPTzODh-6k&has_verified=1 Grammy and Golden Globe nominated artist Frank Stallone is one of the most versatile actors, singers and musicians in the business. His explosive voice and his range from comedy to drama and rock to blues to big band, leaves audiences entertained and captivated. Frank has garnered three Platinum Albums, ten Gold Albums and five Gold Singles and has acted in over 60 films and TV shows including Walker Texas Ranger, multiple sitcoms and variety shows, Hudson Hawk, Staying Alive, Fred Claus, and Tombstone, in which he made a big impact as “Ed Bailey,” a dangerous gunslinger. One of his most memorable film roles was as “Eddie,” the bartender in Barfly, which was touted by critic Roger Ebert: “Barfly is a terrific film that features an outstanding performance by Frank Stallone…he's both captivating and terrifying at the same time.” Frank has written and published over 200 songs and, with his newest single in The Expendables 2 (Don't Want to Fight With Me), has written and recorded compositions for nine films, including Rocky I, II and III, Rambo II, Paradise Alley and Over the Top. But, it was Frank's nine songs that he wrote and recorded for the Saturday Night Fever Sequel Staying Alive that earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Sound Track and a Grammy nomination for Best Original Song with his single, Far From Over. That song became a massive number#1 hit around the world and stayed on the top charts for more than four months. At a young age, the Maryland-born, Philadelphia-raised native pursued his musical ambitions, forming a series of bands, and finally turned professional at the tender age of 15 (“I had to lie about my age,” admits Frank). His group, Valentine, included lead guitarist John Oates (Hall and Oates) and was signed to RCA Records in 1975, when they recorded their first album. Frank made his on-screen singing debut, performing the self-penned acapella song, Take You Back in the opening scene of the film Rocky. “The only reason I got the part was that I was the only musician my brother, Sylvester, knew…and I worked cheap.” Frank has recorded nine solo albums receiving praise from legends Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Sammy Cahn. His rock-influenced Full Circle, “which I feel is my best” was followed by his American songbook albums, In Love in Vain, with Sammy Nestico, Stallone on Stallone by Request, a compilation of Frank's film soundtrack tunes, and Songs from the Saddle, showing Frank's more acoustic side. He's a big fan favorite in Australia and he performs in concert halls, theaters and clubs all around the world, gaining critical acclaim wherever he goes “he has the crowd enthralled.” (New York Daily News) Frank is a guitar, music, mafia and art aficionado, is one of the best boxing historians and collectors in the world and is an avid collector of guitars, guns and memorabilia. When he's not writing songs or filming a project, he can be found on a shooting range or at the gym but he's happiest with a guitar, beautiful women and good glass of vino. If you ask why he's never been married, he'll tell you “I guess I just forgot.”

Career Retrospective with Anne Archer on March 5, 2020. Moderated by Michelle Danner. Anne Archer was nominated for an Academy Award®, a Golden Globe and the British (BAFTA) Academy Award for her role as Michael Douglas' sympathetic, tortured wife, Beth Gallagher, in Adrian Lyne's 1987 thriller, "Fatal Attraction." Archer is also well-known for her poignant Golden Globe-winning performance in the ensemble cast of Robert Altman's "Short Cuts" and for playing CIA agent Jack Ryan's beleaguered wife, Cathy, in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger." Throughout her motion picture career, she has starred opposite some of Hollywood's most dynamic and respected leading men, not only Michael Douglas and Harrison Ford, but also Gene Hackman in "Narrow Margin," Donald Sutherland in "Eminent Domain" and Sylvester Stallone in "Paradise Alley”, Tommy Lee Jones in “Man of the House”. In 2012 she co-starred in “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” with Mathew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner. That same year she starred along with an ensemble cast in the feature film “Lullaby” with Garrett Hedland, Richard Jenkins, Amy Adams, Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard. In 2009 she co-starred in The CW’s series “Privileged” as a jet-setting founder of an international cosmetics empire. For two seasons she played Jennifer Love Hewitt’s strong yet vulnerable mother on CBS’ popular “Ghost Whisperer” and previously appeared in Showtime’s provocative series “The L Word.” Most recently she guest starred in an episode of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT entitled 'Mama'. In 2014 she produced her first feature film “The Squeeze” written and directed by her husband Terry Jastrow. On London’s West End, in 2001 Archer played the role of Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate . In 2014 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Archer played the role of Jane Fonda in The Trial of Jane Fonda (written by her husband, Terry Jastrow). In 2016 she received rave reviews for her performance in the London theatrical production at the Park Theatre, which received an Offie Nomination for “Best New Play”. The theatrical presentation deals with a little-known event in 1988, in which Fonda confronted a room full of hostile war vets. In the spring of 2020 Miss Archer will develop and star in the debut of a one woman play “A Ticket to the Circus” about Norris Church Mailer, the wife of Norman Mailer adapted into a play from her book of the same name and performed at The Edgemar Theatre in Santa Monica California. Born into a show business family, she followed in the footsteps of her parents, actress Marjorie Lord (TV’s “Make Room for Daddy”) and actor John Archer (“White Heat”). Archer studied theatre arts at Claremont College before debuting on the motion picture screen opposite Jon Voight in “The All-American Boy.” She won critical acclaim for her leading role in “Lifeguard” as Sam Elliott¹s old flame. Planned Parenthood Federation of America appointed her as their first National Public Advocacy Chairman; and she served in this role for seven years. In recognition of this commitment, Ms. Magazine honored her as one of their six “Women of the Year” (1988). In 2006 she founded Artists for Human Rights (AFHR) with the purpose of bringing artists together with the common cause of promoting human rights and activism by raising awareness of those rights as laid out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. AFHR works inclusively with allied organizations to bring artistic expression to bear in the human rights arena through a multitude of artistic campaigns and international partnerships thus increasing responsibility, peace and tolerance around the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy this new episode of The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we examine movies from established movie stars that have flopped at the box office, been forgotten by time, or remain hidden gems. These aren't the films that made them famous or kept them famous. These are the other ones. And, man oh man, does Sly have a bunch of other ones. We cover one movie from each decade of the movie star's career: his directorial debut Paradise Alley in 1978, the prison drama Lock Up from 1989, James Mangold's Cop Land (1997), the remake Get Carter and, finally, Bullet To The Head from 2013. We get a bad impression from podcast producer Conor O'Donnell and some sharp insight from our guest Chadd Harbold, an accomplished filmmaker with two films in theaters right now: Depraved, directed by Larry Fessenden, and Villains, starring Bill Skarsgård and Maika Monroe. He's also the writer/director of the film Long Nights, Short Mornings. The three of us discuss Sly's early career and ego-driven foibles, his reckless, action movie 80s, his career regrets and late-era resurgence. One thing we didn't discuss was this wild story involving Richard Gere on the set of The Lords of Flatbush. Subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, or Overcast. With Confetti In Our Hair: Celebrating The Artistry & Music Of Tom Waits
Once again unto the breach, dear folks, once again. We're back down the rabbit hole because there's a world going on underground. So down we go to explore the many caverns of Tom Wait's musical madness, from the Glitter and Doom tour to Paradise Alley. Along the way, to our dismay we stumble into The Human Guinea Pig's secret lair. That's right, Nashville session singer Brad Smith is back with his unexpected take on Franks Wild Years! Once again, this one's for all you diehard Tom fans!
"You got the heart, but you ain’t got the tools no more." Sylvester Stallone’s directorial debut, Paradise Alley, was a flop and the studio didn’t want to give him another shot when he said he wanted to direct Rocky II. Luckily, Rocky was such a success and the producers knew he was largely the man behind it, so they gave him another chance. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Rocky series with Stallone’s 1979 film Rocky II. We talk about how this film fixes some of the issues we had with the previous film, but also how it has some new problems of its own. We look at what Stallone is doing as a director and what we think about him in that role. We chat about the returning cast – notably Paulie, Adrian and Creed – and look at how their roles have evolved. We chat about Bill Butler’s cinematography, Bill Conti’s cinematography and more. And we dig into the final fight to really see what makes it work so well. It’s a solid entry into the franchise and a great follow-up to the previous film. We have a great conversation about it so check it out then tune in to this week’s show! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins. New Year, Same Us! We kick 2018 off here at Three Way Theater with one of our most requested films as we finally review Sylvester Stallone's 1978 opus Paradise Alley. The Carboni brothers -- con man Cosmo (Sylvester Stallone), disabled war veteran Lenny (Armand Assante) and dim-witted Victor (Lee Canalito) -- are determined to leave the slums of New York City. Their best escape route is the muscle-bound Victor, whom a manipulative Cosmo convinces to become a professional wrestler. The wins and prize money pile up, until neighborhood gangster Stitch wants in on the action, scheduling Victor to fight the dangerous Frankie the Thumper (Terry Funk) in a marathon match. We break down Stallone's directorial debut after the success of Rocky and discuss the merits of roof racing for fun, Nazi war criminals hiding out in Hell's Kitchen, and the awful animal cruelty in movies.

We're shifting gears and going full on Turner by bringing back the often referenced Movies For Guys Who Like Movies. Remember when Thunder would end on Thursday nights and some bad ass movie would come on? Well, we're bringing it back. This week: Paradise Alley. We fittingly started with a wrestling movie of sorts. Sylvester Stallone was feeling the love post-Rocky and this became his directorial debut, and it's full of all kinds of fun (although many of it unintentional). Please join us for a very special hour with guest Frank Stallone. Grammy and Golden Globe nominated artist Frank Stallone is one of the most versatile actors, singers and musicians in the business. Frank has garnered three Platinum Albums, ten Gold Albums and five Gold Singles and has acted in over 60 films and TV shows. He has written and published over 200 songs and has written and recorded compositions for eight films, including Rocky I, II and III, Rambo II, Paradise Alley and Over the Top. But, it was Frank's eleven songs that he wrote and recorded for the Saturday Night Fever Sequel Staying Alive that earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Sound Track and a Grammy nomination for Best Original Song with his single, Far From Over. “The only reason I got the part was that I was the only musician my brother, Sylvester, knew…and I worked cheap.” Frank is a guitar, boxing, music, mafia and art aficionado and is an avid collector of guitars, guns and boxing memorabilia. When he's not writing songs or filming a project, he can be found on a shooting range or at the gym.

November 16, 2009 - This week, Josh talks to Kevin Baker about his new graphic novel, Luna Park from Vertigo, illustrated by the fantastic Danjel Zezelj. This is Baker's first graphic novel, but he's already a New York Times best selling author of books like Dreamland and Paradise Alley. Luna Park is a story about a down and out former Russian soldier trying to find his way through life among the crumbling ruins of the once great Coney Island.
