"It starts within yourself." The DJ, vocalist and producer talks about self-improvement, moving to rural Portugal and working alongside long-time partner Steffi. There may be no voice as rich, vibrant or easily distinguishable in today's house and techno scene than that of Virginia. The Brazilian-German DJ, producer and singer has earned a name for herself as a hybrid house vocalist and a resident at Panorama Bar, where she plays sets featuring her own live vocals. Born in Munich to a family of musicians, she became enamoured with the soulful singing of artists like Sade, Whitney Houston and Tracy Chapman, who became her early guiding lights. It wasn't until her adolescence, when her sister took her to a nightclub, that it crossed her mind to begin blending these two musical worlds. By the mid-2010s, Virginia had relocated to Berlin to earnestly pursue a career in electronic music and create a new, house-focused musical vocabulary that's become completely her own. It was around this time that Virginia met her long-time partner, fellow DJ and producer Steffi. In this week's Exchange, she speaks with Chloe Lula about their personal and creative relationship, and their love of collaborating together in the studio and behind the decks. After more than two decades in Berlin, the couple relocated to rural Portugal in 2020, a move that's opened up a world of abundant rest and opportunity. They opened up a studio and residency called Candy Mountain (so called for its veritable candy shop of synthesizers and hardware), where they've found a new appreciation for taking things slow: going on walks in the countryside, engaging in botany and inviting friends and collaborators over to work on music. She reflects on what it means to step away from the demands of Berlin's bustling music industry and why her voice has remained such a powerful source of energy and inspiration over the course of her career, and her forthcoming album with Steffi on Dekmantel, Patterns of Vibration. The great actor of stage and screen, Harris Yulin ("Scarface", "Ozark"), returns to the podcast. He was in the 1987 film "Candy Mountain" which was recently re-released. New York City, 1980s. A struggling, deadbeat musician named Julius has fallen on hard times. With no guitar, band or paying gigs, he cooks up a get-rich-quick scheme – to find the legendary, yet elusive guitar-maker Elmore Silk. Considered one of the greatest luthiers in the business, Silk's disappearance from the scene has only made his work more coveted by musicians and executives looking to make a buck off his name. Julius agrees to track the man down and sets out on the road. Meant to be a simple journey upstate, Julius stumbles down a long, winding road full of dead-ends and wrong turns towards an eventual revelatory conclusion in the Canadian wilderness. One of the great cult classics of the 1980s and starring character actors Kevin J O'Conner and Harris Yulin, the supporting cast features real-life music legends Tom Waits, Leon Redbone, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Johansen and more. “A wry, laid-back Heart of Darkness" (Chicago Reader), Candy Mountain combines the keen eye of legendary photographer Robert Frank with novelist/screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer's mythic American prose to produce the quintessential road movie. "Candy Mountain" is currently available on various streaming platforms.

Pop Screen doesn't cover much metal, and a cynical listener might counter that we're not about to start now, as we look at the 2019 Netflix film The Dirt. A biopic of Motley Crue, it offers a visceral look at sex, drugs and rock and roll, but maybe not enough into why hair metal (the stuff Americans heretically call "glam rock") remains so divisive. To address this and so many other questions, Graham is joined by Kat from The Hollywood News to talk about their mutual soft spot for the much-maligned rock biopic genre, our feelings on the Crue and the grunge scene that essentially ended their career, and how well the film handles its many darker strands. We are gentler on Machine Gun Kelly than you might think, though there's a good Eminem diss if that's your thing. If you want to give us a slice of your pie, you can donate to our Patreon where all sorts of things are going on - Graham is winding down his Doctor Who reviews and starting on The X-Files, Rob is championing Asian films that don't have UK distribution, our TV and film miscellany podcast Last Night... goes from strength to strength... oh yeah, and there's an exclusive episode of this show coming out tomorrow, about Rudy Wurlitzer and Robert Frank's rock road trip movie Candy Mountain. Jake decided that Hinds needed to try something completely new in his life after he learned something he thought was weird about Hinds. Jake loves watching #TikTok and #YouTube videos, especially the #funny ones that don't go #viral, and Jake wanted to know what videos Hinds liked to watch. Much to the #surprise of Jake, Hinds has never really watched TikTok, YouTube or any viral videos. Hinds barely knows how to operate YouTube and Hinds has never used TikTok before so it's all relatively new to him. Jake makes a list of 10 (or is it 11) videos for Hinds to watch and give his reaction to during the #WhatWeMeantToSay podcast (see video links below). From funny things kids say to crazy video animation stories, Jake has it all covered in the videos he makes Hinds watch. Also, Hinds throws in a video he wants Jake to watch at the end. Also, in this What We Meant to Say podcast, Hinds reveals his newly found enjoyment of “Can't Park Pages” on #Facebook. And, Jake admits to eating #pizza cooked in the microwave. Ch. 5-6 are good and bad. Bad because of the Human Circus, the Short Bastard Man, and the Whitest Woman to Ever White. Good because of the Dark One's Candy Mountain and Mat's OT4. Are themes just for eighth graders and wimps? You be the judge.

Dr. Jeanette welcomes Dr. Gerry Haller, author of Will's Adventure to the Candy Mountain, a New Age children's book that teaches compassion and kindness. A New Age Children's book is a story that uses timely topics, up to date story concepts, and creates an integration of the child and the reader to go on a journey together. The story takes us on an adventure that lightens our senses with the words and beautiful art work. A story that creates a new experience with magic, dreams and wonderment. To learn compassion from a child's point of view, also allows the parent, grandparent or reader to also explore how they too can become more compassionate. What a wonderful engagement of souls! Assiety of Sassassins It's time for "John Wick 3: Parabellum" or Wick in a Box or whatever it's called, and before Aidan and Graham adjudicate the ultra-violence like a glove-carrying Asia Kate Dillon, we've got a Question of the Week where we ask for your favourite threequels. On the other side of that, Off the Shelf sees Graham in war correspondent mode with Eureka's "The Night of the Generals", before Aidan digs up Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer's "Candy Mountain" as part of Deep Cuts. Rounding things off, Mick has the BFI's new Blu-Ray of "Room at the Top". If you're thinking of ordering any of the books mentioned on this show, be careful, OK? Ken would recommend you watch The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and love it. Kendra would recommend you not bother and just listen to this podcast instead. We tell the general plot of the short stories and Kendra really gives away a major spoiler at minute 16:20. We also discuss the gender dynamics regarding critiques of the Coen brothers and ask why they aren’t called the Coen siblings. Unrelated to the Coen brothers we talk about Chris Pine’s visible pine in the Outlaw King. . And our connection to Peri Gilpin... Tom Waits was in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs which we really took our time talking about. He was also in Candy Mountain (1987) [which Kendra incorrectly said was related to the song Big Rock Candy Mountain] with Laurie Metcalf. Laurie Metcalf was in a Frasier episode in 2004 with Peri Gilpin called Caught in the Act. A couple of fun facts about the show. Wherein Dom is a part-Asian movie star, Matt is a poor man's Hugh Hefner, and we start many conversations but don't quite end them... in an even worse fashion than usual. We discuss (partly, and in only the first ten minutes) martial arts, UFC, being both in slash on Bali, +GMT, the name of a Playboy model from Dom's childhood, "in the culture" (is that what we're doing these days?), Amy's birthday (this isn't April, this isn't Phuket), Matt does a passable Louis Armstrong (it's not racist!), bad karaoke sound systems, leave Sarah Jessica Parker alone, Father Ted, horse songs, Candy Mountain. Also; dangling participles (it's the heat), Run Don't Walk, (Matt begins to look it up, but forgets halfway what he was doing), Dom apologises, RAMI MALEK, Dom completes his Erica Aleniak (doo dah, doo dah) story, Matt thinks the PM should know how much things cost (Dom disagrees), Boys Aloud. And: Dom gently 'Sustainable Creatives' Matt, Oriental rules, Dom's off to get four (Slow) hands, we discuss metallurgists (our dads both were); similarly to when Matt went to his Tassie home town, his old house has gone; Matt gives his mum props, the word is "keramunting". Plus: Matt was punched by a possum, Dom tells a horror story, the pyjama game, Matt's a cold body, Dom's a hot one, Matt's a shirt on/pants off kinda guy, room #1527, Matt's terrible sense of direction and Dom's concern, Dom went surfing, read about Matt's trip on FB, and buy tickets to our Live Show and Original Gig next Tuesday October 23 at Longplay. This is a very special episode, where host Laura von Holt interviews Hasan Hai, president of the Newfoundland & Labrador Beard and Mustache Club- and he’s also a MerB'y - that’s a group of Canadian mermen who are raising money for charity with a “dudeoir” merman calendar. We know, it’s a lot to take in, and it’s all amazing. Over the past few weeks, videos and articles about the MerB'ys have gone viral, and we have been positively squealing at our computer each time we saw these burly mermen who look like they are having the most fun ever. Luckily, Hassan just happened to be in NYC, and so we invited him over so we could wear our mermaid tails and talk mermen, philanthropy, masculinity, body positivity living your best life and doing good, whether it’s with a mermaid tail, a moustache, or whatever quite literally floats your boat. Plus, Hasan answered some listener questions! This interview was super fun, and we have a video version of it on YouTube and at mermaid podcast.com, so you’ll definitely want to go there so you can see it, and buy the MerBy 2018 calendar. Of course. Buy the MerB’ys 2018 calendar at http://www.nlbeardandmoustacheclub.com/ Cinderly’s Mermaid Podcast is now accepting sponsors or partners! (English) Steffi does not do things by halves, and this unwavering commitment to growing and challenging herself as a producer, DJ and label head has kept her at the forefront of contemporary dance music since the mid 90s. Born in the Netherlands, a move to Berlin led to an enduring residency at the city’s emblematic Berghain/Panoramabar, an experience that has translated effortlessly to the international clubs and festivals – big and small – at which she has long been a staple. As a producer, Steffi has an extensive discography that takes in albums, singles and remixes – solo and in collaboration – released by respected labels including Ostgut Ton, 3024, Dark Entries, Ed Banger and Because Music. Steffi’s long-running labels Klakson and Dolly continue to release a distinct blend of electro, breaks, Chicago and Detroit house and techno to this day. In recent years, Steffi’s tireless search for new ground has been made tangible in a permanent move to Portugal where, with Virginia, she founded the label, studio space and creative hub Candy Mountain. Interview : ーDJ MIXはどこで録音したのですか? Candy Mountain(Steffi/Virginiaが運営するレーベル・スタジオ・クリエイティブハブ)で収録しました。 Interview(English): ーWhere did you record the DJ MIX? At the Candy Mountain Headquarters ーPlease let us know about the concept of DJ MIX? I always do something not dance floor related when I make a dj mix so I can put in tracks that dont get to see the daylight during dj sets. this time I decided to do a uptempo techno-ish mix as I havent done one of those in ages and I felt like it for a change so I took a selection of some new amazing stuff and a few older ones that I love. ーPlease let us know about the future activities (gigs and works etc) At the moment I am touring my new live show to promote my new album The Red Hunter that came out last Monday. I will take a little break in January and then come back fully rested for new projects. we have just set up a new project called Candy Mountain. Candy Mountain is a label, studio space and creative hub. The studio sits in the middle of nature. artists can live and work under the same roof with zero distractions in a tranquil environment. The perfect space to work and also connect with the local scene in here in Portugal. So we are finetuning everything so we can kick off receiving more people in 2023 and get the creative vibe going.
