Do school leaders need coaching? (with Dan Kelley)

A lot of professional development is still delivered in the lecture or workshop format, even though there's evidence that this model doesn't have a significant impact on student outcomes. So what do people working in K-12 education need to support students and have fulfilling careers? I started asking myself that question when I was working in the schools, and I stumbled upon the coaching industry. This led me to discover design-thinking, a process for solving problems and innovating; something I'd never heard of in my preservice training. Nowadays, people are more skeptical than ever about the scientific community. Many feel that the heavy focus on evidence-based practice ignores the human component that school professionals bring to the table. I see design-thinking as a way we can be evidence-based, innovative, and empathetic at the same time. That's why I invited Dan Kelley from DPK Solutions to episode 114 to share how he uses design-thinking to coach school leaders.Daniel P. Kelley is the veteran principal of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, RI. He is an educator, instructional leader, and innovator. Dan served as president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) during the 2017-2018 school year and was a member of the NASSP Board of Directors for five years. He has served as a high school assistant principal; a high school and middle school special education teacher; and a middle school math and science teacher. He was named the Rhode Island Secondary Principal of the Year in 2012.As a leader in education, Dan believes in challenging current instructional practices to provide creative and effective opportunities for students to learn, grow, and succeed. He is passionate about educational leadership that builds strong relationships with faculty and the community, utilizing social media to foster connections between educators, and establishing Personal Learning Networks for collaboration and professional development. In this episode Dan shares:✅Why your boss isn't always the best person to coach you, and where you can go to get the support you need.  ✅How to use design-thinking to keep students engaged and provide real-life, project-based experiences that prepare them for adulthood.✅What school staff need in a coach (and why it's different depending on your role and your career goals). You can connect with Dan on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dpk933/ on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/danielpkelley and on his website here: https://twitter.com/danielpkelleyIn this episode, I mentioned my free online training for K-12 therapists who want to offer social and academic support that's evidence-based and neurodiversity-affirming. Formal education will only take us so far. We need to create a system to help us learn across our lifetime. A personal learning network (PLN) and environment does exactly that. With a PLN, you are setting up systems to help you collect information, make sense of it, and share it with others. Naturally, a key component of this system is collaborating with others. A good PLN will help you achieve this and more. In this episode, I am going to discuss personal learning networks and environments. I found some inspiration last week - it really sparked a desire to look differently at my daily interactions and experiences and to let loose and just enjoy! And as a result, this episode is a little different. It's my first solo episode. It's been really hot the last couple of days, but what a difference a day makes. Yesterday, when I recorded this episode it was super warm in my house, we don't have central air (don't really need it for the few days a year it's scorching) but believe me, I've waited for this warm weather so I am NOT complaining. But it's too hot for a warm beverage, so I'm enjoying a homemade lemonade. What's in your cup today? My First Solo Episode This episode is about finding inspiration and rediscovering your creativity. I think we've all been there - a place when we felt we were lacking in creativity and maybe we put off a project because we just couldn't imagine a way to complete it. I know I've been there once or twice. But what did you do about it? How did you get inspired to create something amazing? I took a few days off last week and my husband and I rode our motorcycles 1600 KM from our home in Ontario to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to meet up with my best friend Jenn and her hubby. While we were there we did a bunch of touristy things, historic sites, the liberty bell, Independence Hall, the Rocky stairs (because you just have to). We visited City Hall and right near it is a super game piece filled terrace- with Monopoly pieces, Sorry pieces, chess, dominoes, bingo - it was really cool. We had a great time walking around and getting the US perspective on the US declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. We had only our Canadian history books, so hearing the American telling was interesting.   The Franklin Institute One of my favourite things was the museum mostly geared towards science and education for children - the Franklin Institute.  There was a special Game Masters exhibit that we went to and learned about some of the great game designers and  developers from all over the world. It was neat to see and play some of the early video games again and being game enthusiasts, we really enjoyed the experience and seeing the evolution of arcade games and gaming systems. We also experienced some really cool hands on play. I gave myself permission to be a kid again, to get my hands wet in the sand, to climb through a heart, to build a building that could withstand an earthquake (of the four of us, mine was the only one left intact!). It was super fun.  Playing these games and some of the engaging interactive screen scenarios really helped me find some new inspiration and creative thinking on techniques and examples I could include in something for adults. Arnold Schwarzenegger says forcing California's students to rely on printed textbooks is so yesterday. The governor recently launched an initiative to see if the state's 6 million public school students could use more online learning materials, including open courseware--perhaps saving millions of dollars a year in textbook purchases. The governor is starting with math and sciences and has asked providers to submit their online postings to state officials by next week. The materials that survive state review will be made available to school districts by Aug. 10. "We expect the first science and math books to be digital by this fall," Schwarzenegger said. "If we expand this to more textbooks, schools could save hundreds of millions of dollars a year, and that's hundreds of millions of dollars that could be used to hire more teachers and to reduce class sizes." http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/top-news/index.cfm?i=59180 Events & Happenings: 2.
