In Italia il riscaldamento delle abitazioni ha un alto valore inquinante, con 17,5 milioni di case riscaldate con gas metano: il settore residenziale, da solo, è responsabile del 64% della quantità di polveri sottili Pm2,5, del 53% di Pm10 e del 60% di monossido di carbonio (CO) emessi nel 2018, contribuendo così al peggioramento della qualità dell'aria, specie nelle grandi città del Centro-Nord. In Italia il riscaldamento degli edifici residenziali, commerciali e pubblici pesa, dunque, sulle emissioni di CO2 per oltre il 17,7%, secondo i dati forniti dall' Ispra, l'istituto Superiore per la protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale.È quanto emerge dal nuovo studio "Una strategia per la decarbonizzazione dei sistemi di riscaldamento degli edifici in Italia", realizzato da Elemens per conto di Legambiente e Kyoto Club, secondo il quale, nel 2021, "il riscaldamento domestico contribuisce ancora, in maniera significativa, a inquinare le nostre città e a surriscaldare il Pianeta". Lo studio esplora la situazione dei sistemi di riscaldamento nel nostro Paese e le relative emissioni di gas, nonché le priorità d'intervento, segnalando le proposte elaborate dalle due organizzazioni ambientaliste, che puntano all'eliminazione immediata del superbonus per le caldaie a gas ed al divieto, entro il 2025, di installare nuovi impianti alimentati da fossili.Legambiente e Kyoto Club sottolineano che il riscaldamento domestico è "incentivato da una serie di sussidi ambientalmente dannosi e da misure che, come ultimo l'ecobonus, anziché spingere unicamente gli impianti a fonti rinnovabili, favoriscono anche quelli a combustibili fossili”. Eppure, le alternative ai sistemi centralizzati alimentati a gas e gasolio, che in Italia caratterizzano soprattutto i grandi agglomerati urbani, esistono già e sono altamente competitive con tecnologie a emissioni zero e fonti rinnovabili.La Giornata della Terra che verrà celebrata il 22 aprile ed in vista della quale Facebook si è impegnata a ridurre il proprio impatto ambientale, arrivando a supportare tutte le proprie attività con energie al 100% rinnovabili, per raggiungere il traguardo "emissioni zero" . Negli ultimi tre anni, il Social di Mark Zuckerberg ha, infatti, ridotto del 93% le sue emissioni di gas serra. Per l'occasione del 22 aprile, Facebook ha condotto un sondaggio tra i suoi utenti, dal quale emerge che per l'84% di quelli italiani il cambiamento climatico deve essere una priorità per il governo. In Europa, le percentuali hanno raggiunto l'86% in Spagna e l'81% in Francia. Nel Regno Unito e in Australia più di 7 persone su 10 ritengono che il proprio governo dovrebbe impegnarsi maggiormente per risolvere questo problema, mentre in Arabia Saudita e in Egitto solo 4 persone su 10 pensano che il governo stia facendo abbastanza.Gli obiettivi 'green' di Facebook - spiega una nota del Gruppo - erano stati fissati nel 2018 e oggi la società "è tra i principali acquirenti aziendali di energie rinnovabili, avendo sottoscritto contratti per oltre 6 gigawatt di energia eolica e solare in 18 stati ed avendo investito 8 miliardi di dollari in 63 progetti fotovoltaici ed eolici in tutto il mondo, che hanno, tra l'altro, creato decine di migliaia di posti di lavoro".In occasione della Giornata mondiale della Terra, il social annuncia anche nuove iniziative sul tema. EcoScience Lab, de León, México, un proyecto que apoya diseño y fabricación de un biorreactor que permita la captura y transformación de los principales contaminantes (CO2, SOx, NOx, PM2.5 y PM10) de los gases industriales, utilizando microorganismos fotosintéticos. Permite a las industrias reducir sus emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, al mismo tiempo que reduce su impacto en el medio ambiente: mediante la captura de contaminantes se genera oxígeno y biomasa, que se transforman en biomasa con la que se producen los biofertilizantes, además de generar oxígeno limpio. Además, con su algoritmo especializado para controlar las ondas de luz, captura el 85% de los principales contaminantes del aire. #TPLT

En todo el mundo se muestra la necesidad de vivir y sentir más la ciudad. El carro no permite vivir la ciudad, al contrario, sataniza las condiciones de sentir, compartir y socializar la calle. Perder horas en un trancón, ocasiona la racionalización y la reflexión de muchos. A esto se le suma los altos niveles de contaminación que cada día demuestran la ciudad de Bogotá. De acuerdo a los datos expuestos por la Secretaría de Medio Ambiente del distrito, demuestran la deficientes condiciones en la calidad del aire en la ciudad, que cada vez se evidencia la clara y seria influencia que se tiene para la salud y la calidad de vida en la población infantil y de la tercera edad, particularmente en la localidades de Ciudad Bolívar, Usme, Puente Aranda y Fontibón. Situación que fue evidente en la pasada temporada de verano donde la administración pública tomó la decisión desesperada de restringir la movilidad de vehículos, gracias a los registros de la red el contaminante que por sus altas concentraciones se presentó como más crítico para la calidad del aire de la ciudad es el material particulado respirable (PM10), en últimos 20 años. La ciudad se embellece. Los desplazamientos son más ágiles. La ausencia del ruido baja el estrés y limpia el aire. Mejora la calidad de la salud de sus usuarios. Pero algo mejor. Se respira mejor, se vive más y con más ánimo. Se siente más la ciudad y nos relacionamos con los demás. No nos engañemos. In particolare, la fortissima riduzione del traffico veicolare sulle strade non poteva non incidere sulla concentrazioni d’inquinanti, come accaduto peraltro a Wuhan, in Cina.

Gasoline and diesel cars have tailpipe emissions. They emit nitrogen oxides and particulate matter which are both harmful for human health. Nitrogen oxides contribute to the formation of ozone, smog, and acid rain. Particulate matter, which is basically dust, with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller are called fine particles and can get deep into our lungs and cause serious trouble. Electric cars don’t have tailpipe emissions. But: there are non-tailpipe emissions due to brake wear and resuspension, which depends on the size and the weight of the vehicle, and not on the type of motor. Yet there is an undisputable potential for air quality enhancement through switching to electric vehicles as main mean of transportation, especially in terms of nitrogen oxide emission. This was confirmed by both a hypothetical calculation and a real life assessment. MOTORES A GASOLINA ALERONES Y PISTONES ANDRES FELIPE RODRIGUEZ CORONADO En este capitulo de Alerones y Pistones vamos a hablar de como funcionan los motores a gasolina, su evolución, y sus sistemas de alta eficiencia. En principio los motores a gasolina introducidos en los autos son 4 tiempos que son: ADMISION, COMPRESION, EXPLOSION y ESCAPE, pero estos motores son muy eficientes y contaminan mucho menos que un Diesel ya que el motor diesel utiliza en ACPM la combustión de este genera partículas PM2,5 y PM10 que son altamente cancerígenas y también las emisiones de NoX y Co2 son muy altas en motores diesel , pero con la llegada de el EURO 5 Y EURO 6 estas han sido reducidas drásticamente pero siguen sin ser como las de un motor gasolina, los motores en los años 40s por ejemplo de 1.000cm3 generaba 30 caballos y hoy en día un 1.000cm3 aspirado genera 80 caballos incluso si es turbo alimentado unos 130-110 caballos de potencia, los motores gasolina gastan un poco mas de combustible que los Diesel, pero contaminan menos, generan menos ruido, y vibraciones, también los motores gasolina han tenido la introducción al rededor de los 80s de los catalizadores que son especies de purificadores de los gases de escape para que los mismos no sean expulsados con todas estas partículas. Una ventaja de los motores turbo son: la potencia mayor con motores con menor cilindrada, el bajo consumo en condiciones normales, y la menor perdida de potencia respecto la altitud. Dopo 15 anni di rilevazioni in merito, il 2018 è stato il primo anno in cui la città di Bra, a differenza di molte altre città piemontesi, è riuscita a rispettare i limiti di legge per le emissioni di polveri sottili: i giorni in cui si sono superati i 50 mg/mc sono stati infatti solo 31, e la media annuale si è attestata al di sotto dei 40mg.L'assessora all'ambiente della città, Sara Cravero, ci spiega come si è arrivati a questo risultato.

Residents living near a Christchurch quarry are off to the Environment Court to stop it moving closer to their homes. The Regional Council granted Road Metals consent to enlarge at a hearing last week.A submission, from an independent air quality controller, maintains there would be little impact from dust from the quarry.But local Annell McDonagh says, while the dust isn't visible, monitors on her property show levels of PM10, which can contribute to heart and lung disease, often exceed recommended amounts. "When it's really high, I can walk around that monitor and not see any dust at all because this stuff is invisible. It gets into our houses, especially at the moment when using heat pumps, it gets in there."

We assessed whether long-term exposure to air pollution is associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality during a period of declining particulate matter concentrations. Approximately 4800 women aged 55 years from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, were followed for up to 18 years. Exposure to air pollution was assessed in two ways: (1) using the distance between the residential address and the nearest major road, as calculated from Geographic Information System data and (2) calculating 1-year average particulate matter concentrations below 10 mu m (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels using data from the nearest air-monitoring station data to the subjects' residences. Ninety-two per cent of all subjects lived in the same community during the entire follow-up period. Associations between mortality and exposure were assessed using Cox's proportional hazards models, including confounder adjustment. Sixteen per cent of women passed away during the follow-up period. An increase of 7 mu g/m(3) PM10 (IQR) was associated with an increased HR for all-cause (HR 1.15, 95% CI (1.04 to 1.27)), cardiopulmonary (HR 1.39, 95% CI (1.17 to 1.64)), and lung cancer mortality (HR 1.84, 95% CI (1.23 to 2.74)). An increase of 16 mu g/m(3) (IQR) NO2 exposure was associated with all-cause (HR 1.18, 95% CI (1.07 to 1.30)) and cardiopulmonary mortality (HR 1.55, 95% CI (1.30 to 1.84)). The association between cardiopulmonary mortality and PM10 was reduced for the extended follow-up period, during which PM10 concentrations (but not NO2 concentrations) were lower. Living close to a major road was associated with an increased relative risk for all-cause, cardiopulmonary and respiratory mortality. These associations were temporally stable. Long-term exposure to ambient PM10 and NO2 was associated with increased mortality rates.

Background: C-reactive protein (CRP), a sensitive marker of the acute phase response, has been associated with future cardiovascular endpoints independent of other risk factors such as body mass index (BMI), age and cholesterol levels. Risk assessment in populations at risk of cardiovascular disease is usually based on one or two measurements. Variation of CRP among certain subgroups of the population, however, has not been examined in detail. The purpose of this thesis is to study associations between time-invariant patient characteristics and mean high sensitivity (hs)-CRP concentrations and parameters that influence the variation of hs-CRP in a joint analysis. Additionally, associations between parameters that might impact hs-CRP in the 24 hours before the blood draw, such as environmental tobacco smoke exposure, alcohol consumption or extreme stress or anger, were examined. Moreover, the short-term impact of ambient air pollution on hs-CRP was studied. Methods: This thesis is based on AIRGENE, a multi centre study conducted in six European cities. Hs-CRP was measured repeatedly up to eight times every four to six weeks in 1,003 myocardial infarction (MI) survivors. At the first visit data on health status, medication intake and smoking history were collected by questionnaire. Blood pressure and BMI were measured and a blood serum sample was drawn. An additional blood sample was drawn at each visit for the determination of hs-CRP and data on life-style in the 24 hours before the visit were collected. In each city, hourly data on particle number concentrations, mass concentrations of particulate matter (PM)
Objectives: To investigate the effect of ambient particulate matter on variation in childhood prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema. Methods: Prevalences of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema obtained in Phase One of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) were matched with city-level estimates of residential PM10 obtained from a World Bank model. Associations were investigated using binomial regression adjusting for GNP per capita and for clustering within country. For countries with more than one centre, a two stage meta-analysis was carried out. The results were compared with a meta-analysis of published multi-centre studies. Results: Annual concentrations of PM₁₀ at city level were obtained for 105 ISAAC centres in 51 countries. After controlling for GNP per capita, there was a weak negative association between PM₁₀ and various outcomes. For severe wheeze in 13-14-year-olds, the OR for a 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₁₀ was 0.92 (95 CI 0.84 to 1.00). In 24 countries with more than one centre, most summary estimates for within-country associations were weakly positive. For severe wheeze in 13-14-year-olds, the summary OR for a 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₁₀ was 1.01 (0.92 to 1.10). This result was close to a summary OR of 0.99 (0.91 to 1.06) obtained from published multi-centre studies. Conclusions: Modelled estimates of particulate matter at city level are imprecise and incomplete estimates of personal exposure to ambient air pollutants. Nevertheless, our results together with those of previous multi-centre studies, suggest that urban background PM₁₀ has little or no association with the prevalence of childhood asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis or eczema either within or between countries.

E adesso in piena estate, con tutta la pioggia che cade dal cielo, il PM10 sta ancora oltre i limiti... Basta! Amo Verona, ma ho la gola infiammata da gennaio! Appena esco da Verona mi passa, e appena vi rientro mi ricomincia. Background: Lung function and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been associated with short-term exposure to air pollution. However, the effect of long-term exposure to particulate matter from industry and traffic on COPD as defined by lung function has not been evaluated so far. Our study was designed to investigate the influence of long-term exposure to air pollution on respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function in 55-year-old women. We especially focused on COPD as defined by GOLD criteria and additionally compared the effects of air pollution on respiratory symptoms by questionnaire data and by lung function measurements. Methods: In consecutive cross sectional studies conducted between 1985-1994, we investigated 4757 women living in the Rhine-Ruhr Basin of Germany. NO2 and PM10 exposure was assessed by measurements done in an 8 km grid, and traffic exposure by distance from the residential address to the nearest major road using Geographic Information System data. Lung function was determined and COPD was defined by using the GOLD criteria. Chronic respiratory symptoms and possible confounders were defined by questionnaire data. Linear and logistic regressions, including random effects were used to account for confounding and clustering on city level. Results: The prevalence of COPD (GOLD stages 1-4) was 4.5%. COPD and pulmonary function were strongest affected by PM10 and traffic related exposure. A 7 mu g/m(3) increase in five year means of PM10 (interquartile range) was associated with a 5.1% (95% CI 2.5%-7.7%) decrease in FEV1, a 3.7% (95% CI 1.8%-5.5%) decrease in FVC and an odds ratio (OR) of 1.33 (95% CI 1.03-1.72) for COPD. Women living less than 100 m from a busy road also had a significantly decreased lung function and COPD was 1.79 times more likely (95% CI 1.06-3.02) than for those living farther away. Chronic symptoms as based on questionnaire information showed effects in the same direction, but less pronounced. Conclusion: Chronic exposure to PM10, NO2 and living near a major road might increase the risk of developing COPD and can have a detrimental effect on lung function.
