Driving Kia’s Carnival people-mover – the high-grade 2.2-litre turbo diesel 8-speed automatic GT-Line at $73,060 plus on-road costs. A spacious three-row 8-seater, and as a large family carrier nothing comes close. Kia Australia hastweaked the suspension on the latest series, with modified front springs, upgraded shock absorbers and recalibrated power steering, and it makes theCarnival shrink around you, behind the wheel feeling much smaller than it reallyis aided by an excellent 360-degree camera and front, side and rear sensors.148kW of power, 440Nm of torque gives it gutsy low down pulling power althoughas a front driver it can get some torque steer pull through the steering wheelunder heavy acceleration. And it’s a shame in some ways it doesn’t have all-wheel drive. Economy, Kia claims 6.5L/100km which I got close too and with a 72-litre fuel tank the range it offers is impressive. Whether full laden or just with adriver the suspension tune is compliant with great ride on any surface. With threeavailable drive modes a really pleasant vehicle behind the wheel apart from theoverzealous lane keep assist, driver attention monitor and speed sign recognitionwhich is simply over-reactive. Warranty 7-years unlimited km. Servicing $1,519over three years. I’m David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Driving Kia's EV6 GT-line at $87,590, the third-tier model in the four-model rangewhich is now topped by the high-performance EV6 GT flagship at $99,590. Thedual motor GT-line however will satisfy most drivers looking for a performanceEV with a 0 to 100km/hour time of 5.2 seconds. Not bad when you consider it tipsthe scales at 2105 kilos. Yes, its premium priced which has no doubt slowedsales but it's as good as it gets in a family sized electric SUV – offering less rangeat 484km compared to rear drive EV6 models at 528kms but I found the statedrange to be fairly accurate despite a mix of urban and country driving in hotconditions with the air-conditioning on. I've also driven the top spec high-performance EV6 GT – too hard-nosed for me - the GT seats hard andunaccommodating while its non-compliant suspension tune provides a too hardride for comfortable day to day use. However, as i said, the drive experience ofthe Kia EV6 GT-line will impress most new drivers – smooth, quiet with assuredhandling and a very comfortable ride and for me the one to own. Delivering a driving range of484km which I found most accurate with a mix of urban and country driving.Energy consumption varied and ran from around 15kWh/100km to18.5kWh/100km. Charging, on a standard 7kW home charger around 71/2 hours,on a 350kW fast charger if you can find one not in use around 20 minutes. The KiaEV6 styling a standout, sharp edge styling that gives it a premium feel and in myeyes it's the best-looking EV on the market. Large well shod 20-inch alloy wheelsare tucked right into the body's corners provide a very roomy interior with greatseats. Despite an impressive dash and instrumentation, the interior is somewhatbland in terms of finishes. The Kia EV9 is an important step in the effort to move electric vehicles from the status symbols of the rich to everyday vehicles for mainstream Americans. And what could be more mainstream American than a three-row SUV? That's the market the Kia EV9 is trying to crack as the first non-luxury battery-electric dedicated three-row SUV to hit the American marketplace. It brings plenty of positives to its effort — expressive exterior design, roomy cabin, advanced driver assistance features, and several configurations. As guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo discovered, the Kia EV9 is also rewarding to drive. The GT-Line version of the EV9 has 379 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. Its 0-to-60 mph acceleration time is under five seconds. For those who like road trips as we do, the EV9 offers up to 300 miles on a charge in the long-range version of the Light trim. Kia says that with the use of ultrafast recharging on high-speed DC chargers, the EV9 can go from 10 to 80 percent state of charge in under 25 minutes. We'll have more information on the 2024 Kia EV9 in the road test segment. Host Jack Nerad details the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid Nightshade Edition in his portion of this week's road tests. The Camry Hybrid Nightshade isn't a sports car or even a sports sedan, but, as Nerad found out, it has a lot of fun-to-drive attributes, including good initial acceleration. Add its driving dynamics to a comfortable cabin and 50+ mpg fuel economy, and you have a real bargain. Speaking of real bargains, the Hyundai Kona has made a name for itself as a strong SUV value. Now, there's an all-new version of the vehicle, and this week's special guest will tell us all about it. Ricky Lao is the director of product planning for Hyundai Motor America, and we'll get his behind-the-scenes insight into the 2024 Kona. In the news this week, the United States is heavily divided over many issues, and to that list, we can now add electric cars. Some states are moving forward quickly with the new EV technology, while others are taking the opposite stance. Details on where your state stands on EVs coming up. A world-famous sports car manufacturer is gearing up to become a mainstream brand. We'll tell you which brand that is and how they plan to gain your attention coming up. And an executive for a major global automaker says batteries will have to change drastically before we see widespread electric car adoption. We'll tell you how he thinks they must change in this segment, along with our comments. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Andrew tried out the KIA EV6 GT Line, for a week when the weather was much nicer than now. You can listen to his thoughts on the car, KIA's approach to electric cars in this instance and if the praise is deserved, in his opinion, that the car has received.

Auto - Rund ums Auto.

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 22, 2021 33:29

Auto - Rund ums Auto.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   KIA EV6 BOASTS 577 HP, 20 MINUTE CHARGING "The EV6 isn't Kia's first electric car, but it is the first to be built on the Hyundai Group's Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), alongside the new Ioniq 5. The EV6 will be offered with either rear- or all-wheel drive and with the choice of two battery capacities." asys Roadshow: "At the top of the lineup is the performance-oriented EV6 GT, which comes standard with the larger 77.4-kilowatt-hour Long Range battery and dual-motor electric all-wheel drive. Combined thrust is estimated at 577 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. Mat the accelerator and the EV6 GT will sprint to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and onward to a top speed of 162 mph. Exclusive to the EV6 GT is an electronic limited-slip differential that improves traction and handling. Keep the battery above a 35% state of charge and the EV6 should also be able to tow up to 3,527 pounds. The entry-level EV6 and GT-Line come standard with a 58-kWh Standard Range battery, stepping two-wheel-drive power down to 168 hp and AWD to 232 hp. Kia estimates that, at best, a single-motor EV6 with the Long Range battery should cruise for up to 317 miles per charge "   "Kia claims that all models, regardless of which battery is optioned, will be capable of charging from 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes when using the 800V ultra-fast charger. And, if the EV6 is specified with the 77.4 kWh battery pack and 2WD, owners will be able to add 100 kilometres of range to the EV in less than four and a half minutes, which Kia says is around the same amount of time it takes to refuel a conventional ICE-powered vehicle." according to WhichCar: "The charging system of the EV6 is also said to move the game on, utilising an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that is capable of discharging the car batteries’ power to external devices through a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.  This V2L function can supply up to 3.6 kW to devices such as a TV or air-conditioning unit, effectively acting as a generator. Kia claims that thanks to the EV6’s long wheelbase, which measures 2,900mm, and the flat-floor design that the EV’s architecture allows for, the result is an interior size similar to a medium to large size SUV. Dual 12-inch curved digital displays blend into one seamless strip across the car’s interior fascia, with one taking the place of a conventional dashboard and the other acting as a touchscreen interface for the infotainment system. On Tuesday, the Japanese marque revealed the LF-Z Electrified concept car, which is all about charting the company’s course into an electric future." says The Verge: "The company said Tuesday it will introduce 20 new vehicles by 2025 and that just 10 of those will be all-electric, hybrid, or run on hydrogen.  The company has played a very conservative hand here at the beginning of what is, by its own admission, a massive transformation in the industry. And while there are certain advantages to that strategy — like not spending dozens of billions of dollars — the LZ-F is a good reminder of some of the disadvantages, too."   https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/30/22357789/lexus-lf-z-electrified-concept-car-ev-toyota-electric   TESLA AND TOYOTA TO REVISIT OLD PARTNERSHIP "A recent report from an esteemed South Korean publication has suggested that Tesla and Toyota are poised to revisit an old partnership to develop an all-new electric vehicle. The partnership has reportedly been under review since last year." according to Teslarati: " the upcoming partnership between Tesla and Toyota would likely result in the development of a small electric SUV. Toyota is reportedly providing the vehicle platform in the partnership, while Tesla will supply some of the EV’s electronic control platform and software."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-toyota-ev-partnership-report/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQS ACHIEVES 4 MI/KWH WITH 0.20 DRAG COEFFICIENT "That’s comparable to the 4.5 mi/kWh Lucid promises the Air will achieve. Did you know Subaru built a flat-12 engine for its forgotten Formula 1 racing program in the early 90s? More on that at the end of the episode, because first Benjamin has to shake out his ambivalence at the 2021 Kia K5 GT-Line AWD and its ho-hum drivetrain, and Sami needs to wax ecstatic about the (finally) redesigned 2022 Nissan Frontier mid-size pickup. In between. there's an argument about the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor and just how useful off-road driver assistance features really are.

Let’s get a few things straight, OK? A Kia Stonic is a Kia Rio - only with added roof rails, infinitesimally more luggage space, and 43 millimetres of additional ground clearance. And different hair and makeup. This will cost you $5500 extra, roughly. Save thousands on any new car (Australia-only): https://autoexpert.com.au/contact AutoExpert discount roadside assistance package: https://247roadservices.com.au/autoexpert/ Did you like this report? You can help support the channel, securely via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DSL9A3MWEMNBW&source=url We’ve seen this kind of cloning before, with crossovers and cars: Stonic is Rio just like Subaru XV is Impreza hatch. Of course, some manufacturers do this without changing the name - like Toyota with Yaris and Yaris Cross. Either way, beancounters inside carmakers jump at this kind of thing, because the fundamental R&D is already in the can - amortised and paid for - you just jack the car up a bit, you give it marginally different styling, bit of botox if you’re lucky, slap on a new badge - and there’s a brand new SUV, at a fraction of the cost of developing a bespoke one. Like, don’t get me wrong here: Stonic is an awesome styling exercise. It looks great - the proportions are spot on, and the front end in particular came together really well. Especially on GT-Line, which you’re predominately looking at in this review. With cars being the fashion statement they often are in the minds of many, there’s all too frequently a line in the sand with the letters ‘SUV’ on one side. The ‘must have’ side. It’s kinda non-negotiable. So there will be people out there for whom only an SUV will do. This ultimatum will be delivered to you in some way - probably not in the manner of the butler handing you a gilt-edged envelope. For these people (who I would argue can’t see the forest here, for the trees) Stonic will be a contender in the way Rio won’t. Stonic is priced - and equipped - competitively against its peers, such as Mazda’s CX-3 and Big Sister’s Venue. You’ll pay roughly $10,000 more for a fully-loaded CX-3. However, the Mazda’s not a rip-off. CX-3 delivers roughly 50 per cent more power from its 2.0-litre four, and it has AWD and adaptive cruise, for example - both of which the Stonic lacks. If you go dollar-for-dollar with CX-3, you’re looking at a front-drive CX-3 Maxx Sport - and then you’re back to manual seats, non-adaptive cruise control and smaller 16-inch alloys. Stonic GT-Line starts looking pretty sharp against a Maxx Sport CX-3. Hyundai Venue is close to a direct Stonic competitor on price and spec. Like Stonic, Venue is front-drive only, but even here, Venue will give you about 25 per cent better power to weight. So, there’s your boxed set of three diminutive SUVs, if you want to duck out and test drive today, comparatively. CX-3 for polish and performance; Stonic as the price-leader; Venue in the middle. Just make sure you drive variants at the same price-point, otherwise this will skew your perception.

The study is to form the basis for which limits are to be deduced for the new Euro 7 standard. Apparently, the authors of the study came to the conclusion that significantly stricter exhaust emission regulations than those in the currently valid Euro 6 standard were necessary to achieve climate targets."   Hildegard Müller, President of the VDA: “With the introduction of the planned EU-7 standard, the EU Commission will de facto ban cars with combustion engines from 2025. According to the press release, deliveries also "are expected to begin in September 2021. Lordstown Motors said that so far it has received approximately 50,000 non-binding production reservations from commercial fleets. The Beta series is envisioned for early 2021 (40-50 units), which will be used for crash, engineering and validation testing. 2021 Kia Sorento and the 'missing' 500kg tow capacity: What went wrong?

Save thousands on any new car (Australia-only): https://autoexpert.com.au/contact AutoExpert discount roadside assistance package: https://247roadservices.com.au/autoexpert/ Did you like this report? You can help support the channel, securely via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DSL9A3MWEMNBW&source=url I mentioned this in my full Sorento buyer’s guide and review, Monday. Kia quietly touted a 2500-kilo tow capacity for this vehicle, as early as January, and a lot of people waited a lot of months specifically for that. Unfortunately, the WonderBra effect here proved something of a let-down, and the vehicle lost a complete cup-size, lobbing with a 2000-kilo tow limit, not the anticipated 2500. I hate it when that happens. And many of you - presumably those among you who were waiting for the metaphoric double-Ds to be unleashed - have since reached out to me, somewhat deflated. I am reading some comments that the tow capacity is in fact going to be only 2t. Even the spec sheet on the Kia au website lists tow capacity as 2000kg. Can you confirm what the truth is? It would be a deal breaker for me as I tow a horse float that is just over 2t fully loaded. Thanks. - ptvfr80 Adding fuel to the fire of tow capacity confusion/conspiracy was this, which was mentioned a lot in comments and e-mails: I was interested to see that in Australia the braked towing limit is 2000kg whereas in NZ and the UK the 2.2 diesel is rated at 2500kg. I rang Kia and they couldn't explain it. Maybe it does relate to different tow ball designs in the various countries as the weights otherwise seem to be the same. Shame though. I took the GT-Line for a short test drive and was very impressed. It looks great too. - Mike Langran This of course is quite true - the Sheep-Shaggistani Kia website does list the Kiwi tow capacity at 2.5 tonnes, both in the online specs and the downloadable PDF brochure. I’m no self-appointed Kia apologist. It’s a proper egg-on-face event for them. That disappearing 500 kilos. I’m sure they had meetings about it. I’m further sure they wished they had just shut up about this, at the outset. Because with no pre-emptive commentary, there’s no vector for public disappointment. So I just want to lay out how this happened, and what gives - literally. And then we’ll crunch the numbers on what you can tow with a new Sorento, and how much payload you can carry when it’s at its maximum tow capacity. Up front though, this vehicle still represents a substantial tow capacity upgrade in real terms. And it’s currently up there with equal class leaders in this category. So, it’s hardly a disgrace in those terms. Sorento is not trying to be a Pajero Sport in terms of heavy lifting. The two tonnes carries over, but the towball download on new Sorento has increased from 100 kilos in the old model to 200 kilos on this one. And in practise this makes achieving two tonnes easier, because it can be quite difficult to limit the towball to just five per cent of aggregate trailer mass on some Aussie-spec trailers. (Typically they’re designed for 10 per cent.) Also worth acknowledging: Mazda CX-8 and CX-9 offer 2000 kilos with 150 on the ball - but both of them have a space-saver spare, which is a comprehensive pain for towing. Kluger has a full-sized spare and 2000-kilo max tow capacity, but Toyota doesn’t list towball download in its specs. And Santa Fe has 2000 kilos maximum, full-sized spare, so that’s good, but (out of the box) just 100 kilos on the towball. You can upgrade that to 150 if you fit the Genuine Load Assist Kit (which is a replacement set of rear springs, basically). I did that on my Santa Fe and did a 2000-kilo tow test with it. That worked fine. It towed brilliantly, but again, you need to work hard to tweak the towball download down to achieve not more than 7.5 per cent of ATM.

After driving the 2021 Kia Sorento for a week now, I have a question for you: How do the premium German brands differentiate themselves, into the next decade? Not perfect, but really good. Certainly far better than the notion you might have in your head when someone says ‘flagship Kia’. If you last looked at Kia in about 2010 (or even earlier) it’s time for you to re-calibrate. In this report I’m going to lay out exactly what I like about the new Sorento - and there is a lot to like about this vehicle. But there are imperfections too, and some things it does poorly - right at the end of this report I’ll address those shortcomings. This review is independent. Everything I say here is my honest personal opinion about the vehicle, and the company selling it. This is the fourth generation Sorento - and all-new platform, updated diesel, all new transmission for the diesel, new interior and exterior, new infotainment OS, etc. The diesel is a 2.2-litre turbo - an evolution of the predecessor. It’s got an aluminium block now, which shaves almost 20 kilos off the bathroom scales, and delivers hybrid-like fuel economy - 6.1 litres per 100km on the official combined cycle test, and 5.3 on the highway. You really should consider the diesel, but if you’re a ‘petrol-only’ kind of dude or dudette, there’s a V6 petrol in the range as well. If you’re an average sort of driver looking for a versatile SUV with five seats and a large cargo bay, or seven seats and modest cargo capacity, then Sorento V6 is a definite starter. The diesel is definitely better - it’s smoother and more composed thanks in part to the all-wheel-drive powertrain, and also because the diesel just makes more mid- and low-rpm power. It’s also a lot more fuel efficient, but more expensive. Sorento diesel AWD is compatible with dirt roads and easy fire trails and driving of that nature - but if you throw properly difficult terrain its way, you’ll probably break something. It’s just not designed for that. All-wheel drive is a real plus for family camping. Like, if it rains overnight and the dirt road you drove in on turns to mush, you stand a far better chance of fronting up for work Monday morning, with AWD. If that’s you, buy the diesel. There are four specification grades. Starting at the bottom is the ‘S’, then the ‘Sport’, ‘Sport+’ and (topping out the range) the GT-Line. And there’s an $18,000 gap between the V6 front drive ‘S’ poverty pack at about $47k drive-away, and the range topping diesel AWD GT-Line at about $65k. So, how do you make sense of that? I’d suggest it’s like this: Bottom of the range is there to appeal to beancounters - specifically the kind of beancounters who buy vehicles by the dozen for corporate fleets. They strip out almost everything they can to get the price low. If you’re buying for yourself, on a tight budget, take one step up because Sport is a lot better than S - and it’s only $3000 more. Sport+ is the smart choice on value - it’s a $4500 step up. You get a proximity key with pushbutton start, power tailgate for juggling the groceries, leather, remote start, heated seats and USBs in the back. GT-Line is the works burger - also diesel only - and it’s going to cost you about $6500 more than Sport+. It’s got everything - premium instrument cluster, blind view monitor, you can park it remotely, you get a 360 camera, and premium sound. This stuff is all nice, but can you live without it in Sport+? Yeah. Absolutely.

Show #759   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 25th April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   TESLA ROLLS OUT AUTOPILOT NAVIGATION FOR TRAFFIC LIGHTS AND STOP SIGNS "Tesla has been developing Autopilot navigation for traffic lights and stop signs for quite some time, and now the feature is finally ready for the public. According to Electrek, the automaker has released a Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control feature for its Autopilot technology as part of the 2020.12.6 software update." says Yahoo News: "The update’s release note says the feature, which is still in beta, will give Tesla vehicles the power to recognize traffic lights even when they’re off and to automatically slow down at intersections. Drivers will get notification when the car intends to slow down, and the vehicle will stop at the red line shown on the onscreen driving visual. They’ll then have to push down the gear selector or press the accelerator to confirm that it’s safe to proceed."   https://news.yahoo.com/tesla-traffic-light-stop-sign-autopilot-183724262.html   TESLA PATENTS A NEW NCA ELECTRODE FOR ITS EV BATTERIES "Tesla has patented a new type of electrode to be used inside of the battery cells that builds in house. The goal of the new battery electrodes is to be longer-lasting and cheaper to produce. The new NCA electrode in the patent is expected to be used in those battery cells." according to TweakTown.com: "Tesla previously patented an electrode using a new generation "single-crystal" NMC 532 cathode and a new advanced electrolyte. The team was able to show over 4000 cycles in battery cells made using the novel cathode. Tesla believes that the battery cells could last for over a million miles when used in electric vehicles."   https://www.tweaktown.com/news/72046/tesla-patents-new-nca-electrode-for-its-ev-batteries/index.html   TESLA MODEL 3 CONFIGURATION IN CHINA EXPANDS WITH MORE INTERIOR OPTIONS "Tesla China has released the white seating option for its Model 3. Previously, the electric sedan was only available with black seats for Chinese buyers." reports Teslartati: "Tesla officially made its white seating option available on April 23. The upgrade costs ¥8,000, or USD 1,132. The price of the upgrade is roughly the same as what’s priced in the U.S. at $1,000. The interior option is available for all three of the MIC Model 3 configurations: the Rear-Wheel Drive Standard Range+, the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, and the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive Performance."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-made-in-china-model-3-white-interior-option/   EUROPE BEATS CHINA IN EV SALES, STUDY SHOWS "Europe's five largest automotive markets edged past China in electric vehicle registrations in the first quarter of 2020, as China battled the outbreak of the coronavirus and imposed shutdowns countrywide, according to a study by PwC and its strategy consulting subsidiary Strategy&." according to Automotive News Europe: "Germany, France, the UK Italy and Spain collectively registered 79,300 full-electric vehicles between January and March, narrowly edging past the 77,256 in China, the study found. Unit sales more than doubled in Europe in that period, compared with the first quarter of 2019. In China, sales fell by more than half in the quarter because of the lockdown. Across Europe, Renault's Zoe is by far the best-selling battery-powered vehicle, ahead of the Peugeot 208 EV and Volkswagen eGolf, while Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV was the best-selling plug-in hybrid"   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/europe-beats-china-ev-sales-study-shows   AUDI QUIETLY ADDS E-TRON SPORTBACK TO AUSTRALIA WEBSITE "Audi Australia has quietly added the e-tron Sportback to its website, confirming not only its planned released for the Australian market but also numerous specifications. The addition of the e-tron Sportback to the Audi Australia website confirms the low profile electric vehicle will be (as with the e-tron SUV) offered in two variants, the 50 quattro and 55 quattro." says The Driven: "The 50 quattro will offer a smaller 71kWh battery than its larger 55 quattro stablemate’s 95kWh pack. The 64kWh usable capacity from this pack will give it a driving range of more than 300km according to Audi Australia’s website. The 55 quattro sportback will be offered in two drivetrain options, with up to 446km driving range from its 86kWh usable capacity. "   https://thedriven.io/2020/04/24/audi-quietly-adds-e-tron-sportback-to-australia-website/   ELECTRIC SUPERMINI SHOOT-OUT "Battery-powered superminis make sense for daily urban use, and soon we’ll be spoiled for choice. We pit the Mini against the Peugeot e-208 and Renault Zoe" says Autocar: "The Renault’s range is truly impressive, plus it offers decent practicality. Yet it can’t match the other two for quality, refinement or driver appeal. And it feels less expensively engineered than its pair of rivals, which would be fine if it didn’t cost more than them to buy. Less expensive versions of the Zoe make more sense than this GT Line. The Cooper S feels like nothing less than a premium product, and for driving fun it’s head and shoulders above the rest, plus at £24,900 for the entry-level model it’s fractionally the most affordable. Yet it’s hamstrung by that range"   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/electric-supermini-shoot-out-mini-electric-vs-two-rivals   CASE 580 EV IS A NEW ALL-ELECTRIC BACKHOE LOADER CASE Construction Equipment introduces “Project Zeus” — the 580 EV (Electric Vehicle), the construction industry’s first fully electric backhoe loader. The power and performance of the 580 EV is equivalent to other diesel-powered backhoes in the CASE product line and provides considerably lower daily operating costs while also producing zero emissions — a motivating factor for utility and government contractors incentivized to work with equipment that leverages alternative fuels and lowers emissions. The 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged by any 220-volt/three-phase connection. While applications will vary, each charge will support most common eight-hour workdays. The battery separately powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors, resulting in hydraulic breakout forces equal to diesel-powered machines and improved performance during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation.   https://www.casece.com/northamerica/en-us/resources/articles/media-case-unveils-project-zeus-580ev-first-fully-electric-backhoe-loader     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   Do you prefer to buy new or used EV? Auto - Rund ums Auto.

Show #644   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 17th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   12 REASONS THE MUSTANG WILL BE SUCCESSFUL The Name Advertised by Ford Dealers Sold by dealers close to you The car isn't ugly It's not slow Models with 300 miles Fast charging on a 150kW charger FordPass Charging Network The car is affordable Interior is modern It's NOT a Tesla Ford will make a lot of them   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/16/12-reasons-why-the-ford-mustang-mach-e-will-be-a-huge-hit/   UK RESERVATIONS OPEN FOR ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-2008 SUV Buyers will be able to reserve the all-new e-2008 SUV in GT Line trim, costing from £32,000 including Government’s £3,500 Plug-in Car Grant. The e-2008 SUV will also be available later in Active, Allure and GT trim levels. GT Line and GT trims feature full LED headlights with smartbeam assist, LED rear lights with PEUGEOT’s ‘three-claw’ signature graphic, as well as an interior with Adamite green colour stitching, mood lighting, dynamic seats and aluminum pedals. Fleet and company car drivers benefit from low company car tax rates. The zero-emission, all-new e-2008 SUV will be exempt from paying Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax from April 2020 onwards. The PEUGEOT e-2008 SUV is powered by a 100kW (136bhp) electric motor with a 50kWh battery. Under WLTP testing, the 100% electric, zero exhaust emissions, SUV provides 193 miles of range.   DRIIVZ AND ENNET TO BRING SMART EV CHARGING SERVICES TO JAPAN Currently, EVs only account for 0.5% of all new cars sold in Japan. However, several Japanese automakers are preparing to launch electric models in the next couple of years which is expected to increase the adoption of EVs in the country. By integrating elements of Driivz’s EV charging management platform into its smart charging service, Ennet will be able to analyse the power usage patterns of its customers, identify when energy grids receive the least demand for charging and make sure fleets are sufficiently charged for use the following day. Functionality to remotely start and stop charging will also be enabled.   LYFT IS INTRODUCING A FLEET OF 200 ELECTRIC KIAS IN COLORADO "Coloradans will be able to catch a ride in a sleek, new $40,000 electric Kia Niro as soon as December even though the vehicles aren’t available for sale in the state." says Colorado Sun: "That’s because Lyft is making a fleet of 200 of the long-range electric crossovers available for lease to its Colorado drivers.    The ride-sharing company on Thursday rolled out the plan — its first attempt in the U.S. to make an electric-vehicle fleet available to its drivers — thanks to a law change earlier this year.Legislators opened up Colorado’s electric-vehicle tax credit program to rental companies and businesses with fleets in an attempt to attract a company like Lyft to put a mass of EVs on the roads. Lyft, which lobbied for the change, hopes laws will change in other states, too. "   https://coloradosun.com/2019/11/14/kia-niro-lyft-colorado-fleet/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   Damon Ireland Our key reason for owning an EV is not being beholden to the fuel companies to run our car. Here in New Zealand we are paying $2.20 for a litre of 91 octane petrol which which tends to jump up quickly whenever any overseas events affects the value of crude oil or our dollar. In contrast our electricity price has not changed in over 3 years   Doug Vowles, Canada Hey Martyn – First off – last week my wife and I ordered our first electric car, the Tesla Model 3 SR+.  Hoping to get it before the end of the year. Thank you for being part of the process in getting to that decision! QOW answer: ZERO EMISSIONS.  I currently would not look at any car that wasn’t zero emissions.  There are other requirements beyond that (like range) but much of it (0 – 60…) is just gravy.   Don Miller I never run late for an appointment because I had to stop and get gas. (We charge each night so we leave home with 200 miles of range)   Phil Kemp I'd vote instant torque as the biggest advantage. It's not only convenient but can be a life saver in a tight situation.   James Penfold from EV Launchpad Martin, answer to question of the week: stomping on the “gas” pedal never gets old when you are running on guilt free, inexpensive renewable energy! Thanks for the awesome podcast. James Penfold Boston USA.   Dafydd Cheung Genuinely, I’m more interested in EVs, because on the whole, they are less destructive to the only planet we have. May the sun shine on your panels.   Adam DeVries I bought my car because it was electric. I hated going to gas stations. someone just asked me if I liked my car because it was electric or because it had autopilot. I can't decide if I would rather drive a car that was electric or one that had autopilot.  I think I prefer the convenience of the electric vehicle getting to charge at home and work always having a full tank but it is a hard decision.   ARON MCINNES  Being able to plug in my garage and go every morning without worrying about filling up. 2020 Kia Seltos review & buyer's guide

If you’re thinking about buying a Kia Seltos - here’s everything you need to know. You can help support the podcast, securely via PayPal: As usual, Kia conscripted its on-call dynamics wizard to do his mad, Jedi voodoo and turn the conventional vomit-spec South Korean suspension into what is actually an outstanding platform to drive on our preposterously crap ‘Strayan roads. The drive program on the launch was on mainly these B and C roads around Noosa, and I’d have to say the body control and steering feedback is excellent. So, big tick there. There was probably 90 minutes of freeway driving as well - it’s quiet and composes at 110. Interestingly enough - this vehicle has a next-generation motor driven power steering assistance system. That means an electrical servo motor provides the steering assistance. It detects input from you, and a computer tells it how much to help. That’s when you’re turning in. But when you’re on the way out of a bend, MDPS typically defaults to ‘off’ and the self-centring steering effect you feel (If any) is just mechanical control feedback. But in this system, the motor also provides self-centring feedback assistance. It’s really excellent. Here’s the range. You get S, Sport, Sport+ and GT-Line in order of increasing appeal and price. 2.0-litre CVT only on S and Sport. 1.6 Turbo only on GT-Line. But you can have either engine in Sport+. So the fuel economy powertrain is available in the first three variants. The performance powertrain on the top two. They overlap at Sport+. Here’s how you tell the four variants apart like an automotive ninja. (This is gunna help at the dealership when they jam one under your snout for a test drive - if you know this, you cannot be bullshat to about which one you’re driving. And before you say it in the comments: ‘bullshat’ is the past participle of the verb ‘to bullshit’.) The poverty S model rolls on steel wheels. That’s dead easy to spot. If you’re looking at a Seltos with alloy wheels and a folding key, it’s a Sport. If it’s got 17-inch alloys and a pushbutton start it’s Sport+ and if it’s got 18-inch alloys (with a bright red highlight around the hub) and a head-up display, it’s a GT-Line. There’s more safety gear on Sport+ and GT-Line, but you can get that on S and Sport for $1000 as an option. So, I’m not going to bore you with the spec sheet - but the salient observations arising from the spec sheet are: S is a real poverty pack. Anything that can be removed to cut costs basically has been, and this is done primarily to appease the great cheapskates of the automotive universe: Fleet managers. It’s a big step - $3500 - to go from S to Sport, but it’s well worth it for a private owner. You get alloys, a full-sized spare, the big centre infotainment screen, SUNA live traffic and 10 years of free mapcare updates (and, I’m assured, there are no strings attached to that - you just get the updates when they’re available). Sport+ is the pick of the range - because you get adaptive cruise and the better safety gear standard. Plus front parking sensors, nicer interior, proximity key. And it’s $5500 cheaper than GT-Line, which is loaded with all the nice toys, certainly, but do you really need all that stuff? Probably not. I’d strongly suggest you buy the 1.6 turbo if sporty engaging driving matters to you. The CVT that goes with the 2.0-litre is a little bit frustrating for enthusiastic driving. It displays this noticeable re-engagement lag, getting on the gas when you clip an apex and want to start feeding the power on smoothly.

Called the ADAC e-Rally Cup, the series replaces the ADAC Opel Rallye Cup collaboration that helped introduce fresh talent to rallying." reports evo.co.uk: "The Corsa-e Rally car itself shares an identical powertrain to that of the road-going hatchback, featuring a 136bhp synchronous electric motor mounted where the traditional internal combustion engine would normally sit under the front bonnet. The 50kWh battery pack is also carried over, which should help the e-Corsa complete more than a couple of special stages without needing a top-up."   https://www.evo.co.uk/vauxhall/corsa/201649/new-vauxhall-corsa-e-to-race-in-e-rally-cup     FIRST LEXUS EV COULD BE A HATCH, CONCEPT BOUND FOR 2019 TOKYO MOTOR SHOW Toyota is committed to launching at least 10 battery-electric cars by 2025, with the first expected to arrive in 2020. Some of these will come from Toyota's upmarket brand, Lexus, which may give us a preview of what's to come during October's Tokyo Motor Show. Citing comments made by Koji Sato, Lexus' chief engineer, Autocar reported Thursday that Lexus will present an EV concept at its home show that may just preview an upcoming production model." reports Motor Authority: "It's possible the concept will be an evolution of 2015's LF-SA minicar concept, a vehicle that fits the description above. And though the LF-SA concept hasn't been confirmed for production, Lexus is rumored to be looking at adding a model smaller than the UX subcompact SUV."   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1124681_first-lexus-ev-could-be-a-hatch-concept-bound-for-2019-tokyo-motor-show   2020 CHEVROLET BOLT EV GETS MORE RANGE "The 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV is now rated with a 259 miles (417 km) EPA range and surpasses its most direct alternatives. The alternative that almost matches its range is the 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric with 258 miles range, which is just 1 mile less." says Pedro for PushEVs: "The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV and previous model years had an EPA range of 238 miles (367 km), so this latest upgrade in battery capacity represents a 9 percent range increase.the Chevrolet Bolt EV still doesn’t have ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). This electric car and the new Renault ZOE are probably the only mass production electric cars with decent range that still don’t have this important safety feature for less stressful driving."   https://pushevs.com/2019/08/22/2020-chevrolet-bolt-ev-gets-more-range/   SINGAPORE FORGOES TESLA'S ELECTRIC 'LIFESTYLE' FOR BUSES "Singapore is in no rush to adopt a certain brand of electric car. In an interview with Bloomberg published today, a government minister offered a rebuttal to Tesla founder Elon Musk's criticism that the city-state is "unwelcome" to electric cars. Investing in mass transit -- rather than Tesla Superchargers -- is how the nation of slightly less than 6 million inhabitants wants to tackle climate change" writes Engadget today. Singapore has embraced electric public buses and is working on developing a system of self-driving, electric taxis. It certainly hasn't ruled out electric cars completely. Last October, British company Dyson Ltd announced that Singapore would be the manufacturing base for its first electric car."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/08/22/singapore-forgoes-teslas-electric-lifestyle-for-buses/   STUDY LINKS SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE TO PM POLLUTION TO RISK OF PREMATURE DEATH "A major new international study shows independent associations between short-term exposure to PM10 and PM2.5 and daily all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality in more than 600 cities across the globe." says Green Car Congress: "The study, led by Dr. Haidong Kan from Fudan University in China, analyzed data on air pollution and mortality in 652 cities across 24 countries and regions, and found increases in total deaths are linked to exposure to inhalable particles (PM10) and fine particles (PM2.5)"   An article from the Telegraph in 2015 talked about the history of PM being in the news: "Particulates – tiny sooty particles in the air – were the first of the pollutants to be identified as toxic, 22 years ago, in a big Harvard study. The seminal 1993 research, dubbed “the six cities study” compared mortality rates in half a dozen representative US urban areas, following the fates of 8,111 adults for at least 14 years."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/08/20190822-nejm.html   https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/car-manufacturers/volkswagen/11899676/The-statistics-about-diesel-are-crystal-clear.-Its-deadly.html   AUDI E-TRON NAVIGATION SYSTEM PROVIDES DETAILED PETROL INFORMATION "The e-tron’s navigation system was recently observed to have a very interesting, and notably humorous feature: it gives drivers useful information about nearby petrol stations and current gas prices." says Simon at Teslarati: "As noted by drivers who shared images of the e-tron’s navigation in action, the all-electric SUV’s infotainment screen displays information about petrol stations on a selected route. The information is quite detailed too, as it includes the current price of petrol in selected locations."   https://www.teslarati.com/audi-e-tron-navigation-gas-stations-diesel-prices/     COMMUNITY The MYEV.com Question Of The Week.
