Mastering the 5 Goals of Child-Centered Play Therapy Sessions: From Theory to Practice

In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I continue our summer school series by diving into "A Practical Handbook for Building the Play Therapy Relationship" by Giordano, Landreth, and Jones. I explore the five key goals of play therapy sessions and discuss how child-centered play therapy techniques help achieve these goals.   I break down each goal, explaining how reflective responding, conveying be-with attitudes, limit setting, choice giving, and esteem building contribute to children's growth and healing. I emphasize the importance of self-directed play and how it leads to self-actualization in children.   Additionally, I delve into the significance of the therapist's attitude and non-verbal communication in creating a genuine, trusting, and empathic relationship with the child. I remind my fellow play therapists that while understanding the rationale and wording of therapeutic responses is crucial, it's the relationship that truly empowers and heals. I encourage therapists to prioritize both skill development and relationship-building in their practice.   Episode Reference: Giordano, M., Landreth, G., & Jones, L. (2005). Please join Troutman Pepper Partners Chris Willis and Lori Sommerfield, along with American Association of Bank Directors (AABD) President David Baris, for a special announcement about the recently published second edition of the Practical Handbook on Fair Lending for Bank Directors and Executive Officers (AABD Handbook). The updated AABD Handbook addresses the dramatic shift in the regulatory landscape for enforcement of the federal fair lending laws over the past decade, with aggressive enforcement of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Fair Housing Act by federal agencies (including the CFPB, U.S. Department of Justice, and federal banking agencies) under various presidential administrations. The AABD Handbook is designed to raise awareness and provide education to bank directors and executive officers about federal fair lending laws and related laws, as well as offer guidance to directors and executive management on their roles in providing meaningful oversight for fair lending risk management. The AABD Handbook also describes best practices to enhance banks' fair lending compliance programs to meet regulatory expectations. For this reason, the AABD Handbook serves as a helpful resource for others, including chief risk officers, chief compliance officers, and fair lending officers. The AABD Handbook is available for purchase through Amazon in paperback and e-book formats.David Baris serves as the president of the American Association of Bank Directors (AABD). He has led AABD since its founding in 1989 to provide bank directors the resources with which to serve their institutions effectively and in a manner that minimizes the risk of personal liability consistent with safe and sound banking practices. AABD supports bank directors through its advocacy, information, and training initiatives.David was a banking law partner with several law firms for many years, including Kennedy & Baris, which he co-founded, and later the Buckley law firm in Washington, D.C. Earlier in his career, he served as counsel to an oversight subcommittee of the House Government Operations Committee and legislative counsel to a member of Congress. Mr. Baris has authored seven books and numerous articles on bank director issues.

I first came across Ed Luttwak when I edited him at The New Republic in its glory days. He is a military strategist, historian, and consultant in the “grand strategy” school of geopolitics who has advised many world leaders — and is basically sui generis. He’s the author of almost two dozen books, including "Coup d'État: A Practical Handbook" and, most recently, "The Rise of China vs. the Logic of Strategy." He’s a trip — and his personality and brilliance come through in this chat. We discussed Russia’s reassertion after the Cold War, the rise of China as a superpower, and the impact of Brexit. You always learn something from Luttwak, and from this conversation, I learned a lot about Xi Jinping, a dictator unlike anyone in China since Mao, and internationally far stronger. Did you know Xi is obsessed with Goethe? We recorded the convo a few weeks ago, so the situation in Ukraine has changed dramatically since then, and Luttwak thought Putin was bluffing about invading Ukraine. The reason he gave is simply Putin’s lack of sufficient manpower to hold down a country as vast as Ukraine. We’ll see if that is borne out in due course. In this eighteenth episode of Learned Hands, the Official Podcast of the Westerosi Bar Association, Maester Merry & Clint from Laws of Ice and Fire ask: What role did Westeros’ legal system play in enabling the Greens' coup? What lessons can we learn from it?Our analysis this week includes:Learned Hands returns to the Dance of the Dragons as we cover the aftermath of the Great Council of 101AC and the weirdly flaccid reign of Viserys I.We detail all of the various institutional, historical, and legal factors that facilitated the Greens' power grab.Lots of comparisons to real-life coups, including the failed attempt we all just lived through. Your hosts give you their fair and balanced opinions on Daemon Targaryen (who sucks).Clint giddily rants about Varys' Riddle AND Federalist 10 AND gets to make a tortured Seven Kingdoms/Federalism analogy for like three hours.Merry instructs you, the listener, on how to pull off a 100% successful coup!(lol jk)We ask the question of whether Westeros is actually fit for unified government. My god so much swearing. Supplemental reading: Tayyab Mahmud, Jurisprudence of Successful Treason: Coup d'Etat & Common Law, 27 CORNELL INT'L L. When recording recent episodes with former library building specialist Patience Jackson, she called our attention to a speech from 1915 that exists in our files. The writer and speaker was Alice Chandler, who made advisory visits to libraries across the Commonwealth, critiquing everything from their buildings to their cataloging systems. In her speech, which our colleague Liz Babbitt reads in its entirety at the end of this episode, Ms. Chandler relays the numerous faults of recently constructed library buildings throughout Massachusetts. As library building specialists, we were taken aback by how relevant and true her statements remain. Therefore, we decided to discuss the similarities between our common comments today and those made 105 years ago by Ms. Chandler. We don't cover every aspect of planning, design, and construction, but we hope you find some useful information for your own project. The tome to which Lauren alludes, The Practical Handbook of Library Architecture by Fred Schlipf and John A. Moorman, can be found in the ALA store. If you have questions, comments, or suggestions for future episodes, please email me at andrea.bunker@state.ma.us.
