Daralyse is joined by gerontologists, activists, and researchers for an in-depth examination of the implications that ageism has on both our personal lives and how we operate within society at large. None of us are immune to ageism, especially older and younger individuals. While the previous episode focused on the abuses caused by ageism, this episode offers tangible suggestions for overcoming ageism in ourselves and in others. In this episode, you will learn about: How markers such as a person's age can be reframed through inclusive language. The importance of recognizing and understanding someone's entire lived experience, and appreciating the myriad ways our accumulated experiences shape each of us as individuals. The societal forces that are needed in order to make our society more age-inclusive. The direct links between how a person perceives their own age, and its impact on their overall health and well-being. Ageism's role in furthering capitalism and whiteness, and how if unchecked, it can promote other -isms as well. Our guests in this episode include: Ryan Backer - Ryan is the co-creator of OldSchool, an anti-ageism clearinghouse. He is an age activist striving to undo ageism within an intersectional framework. They aim to eradicate ageism, along with white supremacy, gender bias, ableism, body shaming, homophobia, classism and all other forms of oppression. The COVID pandemic brought to light many things, including how society views older adults. Louise Aronson wrote a piece in the NY Times titled “‘Covid-19 Kills Only Old People.' Only? Why are we OK with old people dying?”.  The ageist viewpoint she was rallying against was also brought to light in a study of ageism in social media.  When looking at those tweets that were related to older adults and covid, more than 1 in 10 tweets implied that either the life of older adults was less valuable or that it downplayed the pandemic because it mostly harms older adults.  So on today's podcast we are going to talk about the initiative to “Reframe Aging” with Patricia D'Antonio.  Patricia is a geriatric pharmacist, and the Vice President of Professional Affairs at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).   The Reframing Aging initiative is a national effort, led by GSA and supported by Archstone Foundation, uses an evidence-based approach to communicating more effectively about older adults.  There are a variety of resources available, including research reports,  an online toolkit, and free instructional videos, to help us talk about our work in geriatrics and aging. For information about the Reframing Aging Initiative, please check out their webpage www.reframingaging.org.  In particular, check out these two helpful resources on their website:  Finding the Frame: An Empirical Approach to Reframing Aging and Ageism (2017): This report explains the process and research behind the development of the evidence-based reframing aging narratives shown to improve attitudes toward aging and to boost understanding of the structural and systemic changes needed to capture the longevity dividend.  Reframing Aging: Effect of a Short-Term Framing Intervention on Implicit Measures of Age Bias (2019) This article appearing in The Journals of Gerontology: Series B describes the effect of a reframing aging intervention on implicit age bias.

It's time to get ready for life post-pandemic. Seriously, it's going to end. Someday. And, it's time to start preparing ourselves, both physically and emotionally, for life on the other side. Dr. John Whyte, the chief medical officer for WebMD, says transitioning to a maskless world where you can actually hug your friends may not be as easy as you think. He, and other medical professionals, worry about the mental beating our brains have taken over the last year. And he says we all need to prepare ourselves and our families for some PTSD upon re-entry to "normal." Whyte has three-step plan of things we can do now to be ready to truly enjoy the freedom of life post-pandemic. In the last 20 years, Whyte has gained a reputation for being as good a medical storyteller as he is a doctor. He spent 10 years at the Discovery Channel as the chief medical expert and traveled the world seeing how diseases affected people in different countries. He's also worked in government as the director of Professional Affairs for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Now he's at WebMD because he thinks there's nothing wrong with diagnosing yourself as long as you get a second opinion from someone who went to medical school. On this Dying to Ask: Three things to do right now to be ready to live happier and healthier post-pandemic The WebMD search that we're looking at seven times more than we used to before social distancing became a thing The question he asks patients knowing they've been googling their symptoms And who hooked Whyte up with his first TV gig

Mastering Intensive Care
Episode 22: Felicity Hawker - A true female pioneer of Intensive Care

This week’s Mastering Intensive Care podcast features Dr Felicity Hawker who is one of the true female pioneers of Intensive Care in Australia and New Zealand. I had the privilege of working with Felicity for over a decade from when I began as a brand new intensive care consultant over 20 years ago and I came to admire her greatly. Mainly because I witnessed first hand someone who was a master clinician – astute, careful, diligent, systematic, thoughtful, compassionate and knowledgeable. Felicity always handed over the patients in a considered and packaged patient-focused manner. She was a pleasure to work with and I learnt so much from such a high quality role model. Felicity grew up and went to medical school in the Australian state of Tasmania, before completing specialist training in Melbourne, Glasgow and Sydney. She became the Co-director of the ICU at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1985 before moving to Melbourne to be the Director of the Cabrini Hospital ICU from 1995 until 2008, during which time she also worked as a part time intensive care specialist at the Alfred Hospital. She continues to work at Cabrini as the Chair of the Deteriorating Patient Committee. None of this spells out well enough that in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Felicity was doing her specialist training, intensive care was an almost totally male-dominated specialty (certainly in Australia and New Zealand). Many more women have joined her and us over the years but surely the path she forged can’t have been easy. Nevertheless, Felicity has published extensively, written a book on the liver in critical illness, spoken at many scientific meetings and been highly respected in our community. Felicity’s other major contribution has been her committee work at every level of education and training in the various Australian and New Zealand intensive care training institutions since the early 1990s. With other colleagues she was instrumental in bringing together the anaesthetic and the physician training programs through several iterations to ultimately become what is now a stand-alone College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), and where she is now the Director of Professional Affairs. Felicity was the inaugural Dean of the then Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (JFICM) from 2000-2002 and was awarded the JFICM medal in 2009. Since 2005 she has been honoured with the annual presentation of the prestigious Felicity Hawker Medal to the best research presentation by a trainee at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the CICM. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to talk with Felicity, as in my eyes she has been a brilliant clinician at the bedside, a female pioneer in our specialty and a person who has strived to ensure proficient, knowledgeable and professional intensive care specialists are developed over the course of specialty training in Australia and New Zealand. In the episode we talk about many things, including: The early course of her career and what attracted her to intensive care The enjoyable relationships she has made with intensive care trainees The importance of diagnosis and the need to remain curious and sceptical Her time spent training in Glasgow as a Shock Team registrar The influence of a dynamic female consultant during her own training How attitudes and outcomes have changed since when she was one of 2 consultants at what is now one of the biggest ICUs in Sydney The characteristics she thinks good intensivists require Communicating with colleagues and patient’s families Her highly valuable published survey of the issues female intensivists face How research has changed since her early career Her views on winding down an active intensive care career Her earlier successful horse riding career Her current role as a doctor at professional horse racing meetings How she has dealt with the stress of an intensive care career Her observation that many intensivists want to be educationalists Her enjoyment of family, cryptic crosswords, reading and travel And some valuable advice to 35 year old intensive care doctors This podcast is my quest to improve patient care, in ICUs all round the world, by inspiring all of us to bring our best selves to work to more masterfully interact with our patients, their families, our fellow healthcare professionals and indeed ourselves so that we can achieve the most satisfactory outcomes for all. In 2002, the American Physical Therapy Association House of Delegates adopted a resolution that stated, “Physical therapists participate in and make a unique contribution as individuals or members of the primary care team.” In recent years, there's been a growing interest in the role of physical therapist and primary care. The notion of physical therapy and primary care is not new though. In fact, the United States Army has utilized physical therapists as primary care providers since 1971. As well, Kaiser Permanente of Northern California has similarly utilized physical therapists in a primary care role and the interest continues to grow as we move forward and treat people with pain. Here to discuss the role of physical therapy and primary care is Dr. Bill Boissonnault, who is the Executive Vice President of Professional Affairs for the American Physical Therapy Association. Recently, he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In his career, he has earned both a Doctorate of Health Science degree, as well as a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. He's published numerous articles related to patient direct access and has consulted with more than 70 hospitals and clinics regarding the implementation of direct access into physical therapy practice. The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) has launched a program that will allow consumers to return their unwanted medications to their local pharmacist vs. flushing them down the toilet or putting them in the trash. According to the NCPA website, “a vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans.” This is the result of improper disposal of these medications, but now there is a solution. Tune in as Dr. Lisa Faast, owner of her own local pharmacy, describes how the program works in her store. Brad Arthur owns two pharmacies, and sits on the Executive Committee of the NCPA – he will discuss the costs and details of the take back program. Finally, Dr. Carolyn Ha, the Association Director of Professional Affairs for NCPA, will discuss the legal aspects of the take back program. You can learn more at www.disposemymeds.org.
