I am so excited to share my conversation with Maggie Gavigan, the founder of the jewelry brand Mignonne Gavigan. My favorite part about Maggie is her kindness and humility – two traits which I believe have made Maggie so successful. Over the past 9 years, her jewelry has been showcased in 250 stores and she has been featured in several different well-known publications including Harper's Bazaar, InStyle, Oprah Magazine, Forbes, Elle & The Knot to name a few. But just like every entrepreneurial story, it took an incredible amount of grit and perseverance to get to where Maggie is today. In our conversation, we start at the very beginning – Maggie tells us about her childhood growing up in North Carolina with her parents and 3 brothers and how she early on was introduced to her creative side. Maggie then went onto UNC-Chapel Hill, Parsons in Paris and finished up at Parsons in NYC. For her first 10 years out of school, Maggie worked at several fashion companies including Rachel Roy and Loeffler Randall to name a few. In 2007, by happenstance, she was experimenting with a beaded couture vintage gown and an embellished piece of fabric fell to the floor. She picked it up and fastened it around her neck as a cool scarf. On her walk home from work, she was stopped by several people inquiring her about the scarf. Slowly but surely she experienced a demand for her scarf necklaces. While working fulltime at her day job, she started to make and sell scarf necklaces on the side. Finally, in 2014, she decided to launch her own jewelry brand Mignonne Gavigan (MG). Over the past 9 years, Maggie has worked tremendously hard to make MG what it is today. We talk about the setbacks, milestones and everything in-between. Please enjoy!

The ongoing pandemic has given us all the opportunity to examine what really matters most to us and what brings us true contentment. Each week through candid conversations with friends, thought leaders, creators, and entrepreneurs, Bobbi and Anjali are looking for ...www.iheart.comBOBBI BROWN BIOEven as a young girl, Bobbi Brown was enthralled by makeup. "I remember watching my mother apply her white eye shadow and black liner in her blue gilded bathroom--she was glamorous, but fresh-looking." And as soon as she was able to work, Bobbi raced to the small cosmetics store in town, where she got her first taste of formal training.Bobbi's education continued at Boston's Emerson College, where she earned a B.F.A. in theatrical makeup. Upon graduation, she moved to New York City to make it as a professional makeup artist. She showed her ever-growing portfolio to anyone who would look at it, slowly built up contacts and experienced the challenges typical of most freelance makeup artists trying to make it in Manhattan. But despite the ups and downs, her talent and drive earned her coveted gigs with top magazines, photographers and models. Bobbi began her collaboration with photographers Bruce Weber and Arthur Elgort for American Vogue, as well as with the late Francesco Scavullo for Cosmopolitan and Self. A seven-page spread of full-face beauty shots of supermodel Tatiana Patitz--shot by Wayne Maser--also put Bobbi's work front and center.Bobbi's big breakthrough was her first American Vogue cover. The image was shot by famed photographer Patrick Demarchelier and featured the soon-to-be-supermodel Naomi Campbell, made up by Bobbi Brown. Seven years after arriving to New York City knowing no one, Bobbi was part of the club. The industry took notice. As a successful makeup artist with access to everything in the market, Bobbi found nearly all products looked too artificial, making it impossible to create a gorgeous, no-makeup look.Ten years into her freelance career, a chance meeting with a chemist at a magazine photo shoot changed everything. "I had the idea to create a lipstick that didn't smell, wasn't dry or greasy and looked like lips, only better--and I told the chemist about it," she says. The chemist made the lipstick following Bobbi's unprecedented specifications and the result was Brown Lip Color, a pinky-brown shade. Nine other brown-based lipstick shades followed soon after, and Bobbi's set of lipsticks was complete. In 1991, her 10 lipsticks debuted at the Bergdorf Goodman under the name of Bobbi Brown essentials. Bobbi was expecting to sell 100 in a month. She sold 100 within the first day.The message was clear: women wanted makeup that was simple, flattering and wearable. Word spread quickly. Bobbi's unique approach to cosmetics was a long-awaited gift for women who wanted a more natural look. The magazine industry's most prominent beauty editors got behind Bobbi, and her small, insider brand garnered big time buzz. The range expanded beyond lipstick. Bobbi's foundations were yellow-based, not pink, revolutionizing face makeup as it's known today. And, before long, she showed that she was as adept at neutrals as she was at bright and bold colors. This sea change in the beauty market caught the attention of cosmetics empire Estee Lauder, who bought Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 1995, just four years after the company's inception. Today, Bobbi Brown retains creative control of the brand. In addition to running her company, Bobbi continues to pursue her craft by creating the runway looks for New York Fashion Week. A permanent fixture backstage, she works with the industry's best designers including Rachel Roy, J. Mendel, Erin Fetherston, Tory Burch and Cynthia Rowley.Bobbi often does how-to segments on The Today Show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and her advice can be found in syndicated columns and advice features for magazines and websites around the globe.Of course, you can always find Bobbi where she began--on the set. Bobbi is still the world's most celebrated makeup artists for personalities and fashion magazines.A New York Times best-selling author, Bobbi has written several instructional and engaging beauty and lifestyle books, including: Bobbi Brown Beauty, Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty, Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution, Bobbi Brown Living Beauty and Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual. For Bobbi, making other people's lives better simply makes sense. "I love helping others because it feels good," she says. On a year-round basis, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics donates generous financial and in-kind support to organizations including Dress for Success and the Jane Addams Vocational High School. So for this conversation, instead of doing a Step-by-Step Breakdown of the Lemonade Between Beyoncé, Rachel Roy, and JAY-Z, we decided to go deeper. Even though we us @JAY-Z name in the title, this conversation is more about the culture. In April 2016, the world was forever changed when Lemonade, the visual album by Beyoncé, roared through HBO. There was plenty of buzz surrounding the mysterious event, and we're not just talking about the rumblings in the Beyhive. As the special aired, not only did viewers try to derive the meaning of the album's name, but the greater, more personal implications were also hard to ignore. We all couldn't help but wonder: did Jay Z cheat on Beyoncé? It wasn't long before fans latched onto a scapegoat, citing past drama and a cryptic Instagram caption as damning evidence. It seemed clear that fashion designer Rachel Roy had done the deed. But how much did we actually know about the situation? How sure are we that Rachel was Jay's other woman? We're breaking down everything, so read on, learn your facts, and arrive at your own conclusion. Walk with us, join us, comment, like, and share....make sure you take part in this conversation. Driven by her passion to give back, Farai went on to promote opportunities for her fellow African creatives. She has three ventures: her eponymous label - Farai, The Narativ, TNT Concept Store, and Bloom. Farai's dedication to her cause and her craft is awe-inspiring, but you have yet to see her bubbly wit and humor. Don't miss this rare glimpse into this amazing artist's thoughts and obsessions in this fun quick-fire segment - hint: lasagna and Oprah. IN THIS EPISODE: - What are the 3 words that best describe Farai - The first person she thinks of when she hears the word 'successful' - Her favourite book - Her favourite gift to give - The two people Farai wants to have dinner with and why - Farai's favourite time of day and meal - What's something that she can't go a day without - What's her life's theme song - A question that she wished more people asked her and each other - What Farai's 'I AM' statement is... - And so much more!
"Doubting yourself – you've already killed your dream before you've even begun" Farai Simoyi is an award-winning designer, who has worked with big name brands like Beyonce's 'House of Dereon', RocaWear, Nicki Minaj and Rachel Roy. She now has her own eponymous label - Farai. Farai started making clothes for fun as a little girl from scraps of fabrics from her aunt's store in Zimbabwe. At that time she didn't really think about becoming a designer as a career. In fact, when she went to university, she signed up to study psychology. But in her sophomore year, she had an 'aha moment', which led to her changing her major to design. She was hired by Beyonce's 'House of Dereon' soon after graduating, and then went on to work with various big name brands. But she always had a burning desire to have her own line. In 2011 she launched 'Farai' with a show at the prestigious New York Fashion Week. In recent years Farai has really been driven by her desire to give back. She knows all too well that young designers aren't often given the opportunities they deserve. In 2017, she started 'The Narativ' as a place to nurture and support African brands looking to break into the international market. She recently opened 'TNT Concept Store in New York so she can provide designers with a physical location to showcase their brands. Farai is also deeply committed to supporting female entrepreneurs, and especially African creatives. And so she recently partnered to launch 'Bloom', which is a platform that supports African female creative entrepreneurs. Rachel Roy's eponymous founder and Dia&Co CEO Nadia Boujarwah talk with Recode's Edmund Lee and Racked's Tiffany Yannetta about designing and selling clothes for plus-sized women, an addressable market of 100 million. To reach modern consumers, they match their companies' clothes with social media tastemakers who have big followings and a unique point of view. Plus-size consumers were among the first to make the jump to the internet, Roy and Boujarwah say, because they weren't served well by most brick-and-mortar stores. Learn more about your ad choices.
