Renee Reina worked on her PhD in psychology for ten years. Then the pandemic happened and she started making TikToks and podcasts about mom life with her eighteen month old. When that started making money she decided to pursue content creation as a career path instead of what she refers to as a "real job." Why don't we consider what women do online a "real job?" That's just one of the things we are diving into today.Renee talks about ambition and guilt and shame and mental load and I would argue she is still using her PhD every day to help women and mothers. She simply isn't using it the way white men have used PhDs for the past 200 years. Today With Renee Reina: Today on The Inner Edit I am with Renee Reina, who joined me in Episode 14 of Sass Says, where we discussed self-reflection and authenticity in motherhood and beyond. You might know Renee from the internet, where she is the mom friend you always wanted. In March of 2020, just days before the Covid lockdowns, Renee finished her PhD in Psychology. Like many of us, she went online, only she was really good at it. Since then, she has gained a huge following on both TikTok and Instagram, and launched the Mom Room podcast, where she hopes to change how people see themselves and motherhood, in her own hilarious way. While Renee is not a clinician, her PhD, training and research all impact the content she creates. Today, Renee and I are digging into what content creation means to her, whether or not being true to a niche is important, the crazy amount of work that actually comes with these mediums, how she handles negative comments, and why it's important to actually enjoy the content you are creating. Spoiler alert: it's super important. Keep listening, because this is a good one. Pick It Apart [4:09] Renee talks about her struggle with niching down. [12:20] Christie asks Renee about being part of a podcast network and what that means for her. [17:00] Renee shares her experience with hiring out different tasks. [22:09] Christie and Renee discuss publically responding to negative comments. [32:45] Renee shares how her work online impacts her real-life relationships. [39:00] Christie talks about the gray area that comes with working online and the difference between online community and in-person community. [52:52] Renee reflects on why she can't put out content just to be performative and why. Christie Rocha's and Renee Reina's Ah-Ha Moments “I know what performs on social media when it comes to mom content. But that doesn't feel good to me as a creator to only do that—that doesn't fulfill me. So I had to decide recently to not worry about being niche and just post what I want to post.” – Renee Reina “I do notice I don't feel the best when I'm not doing things for myself, like going to yoga and making time for friends and making time for my husband.” – Renee Reina “Not only is [content creation] a real job, but there's no rulebook, there's no one way to do it. And because your business is your face, there is a lot of pressure, I think, to say and do the right things.” – Christie Rocha “You have to enjoy the content that you're creating. Otherwise, it's not going to last.” – Renee Reina More About Renee Reina Renee finished her PhD in psychology days before quarantine started. While in quarantine with her toddler she gained a large following on TikTok with her honest mom-related content and started The Mom Room Podcast. The Mom Room presents a no bullshit, real-life image of motherhood that moms can actually relate to and take comfort in. Renee wants moms around the world to feel a sense of empowerment in being a mom. She wants to help moms acknowledge and validate their feelings and inspire moms to start conversations with their partners that they otherwise wouldn't have. She wants to help ease the dreaded mom guilt and put an end to the mom vs. mom shaming. Ultimately, Renee's goal for The Mom Room brand is to normalize the ups and downs of motherhood and change the narrative of what it means to be a mom. Today we are talking about toddlers - specifically toddler aggression, and even more specific to toddler hitting. We work with many families with toddlers and pre-schoolers to manage sleep challenges at those ages. Which also means we are dealing with families who are in the thick of toddler sleep regressions and behaviors that are new to both the child and parents - and hitting is often at the center of this. We heard Dr. Cara Goodwin on an episode of The Mom Room podcast with host Renee Reina - which brought up so many additional questions about toddler behaviour regressions and hitting, as so many of my clients are managing these difficult situations. So I am beyond thrilled to have Dr. Cara Goodwin, on today's episode - she is a mother of 3, licensed child psychologist, PhD and author - listen in to hear her expert opinion on this topic! Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive
I don't know about you, but I spent a LOT of time thinking about my birth plan before Carys was born. I mean, that thing went through multiple iterations as I read new books about the birth process and thought about what I wanted mine to be like. And I got lucky; we didn't stray too far from the plan (except that that whole ‘urge to push' thing? Well I never felt that. It seemed like she was quite happy where she was. Perhaps that explains why she enjoys being wrapped in fluffy blankets so much?) So I put all this effort into what the Big Day would be like, and practically zero into what life would be like afterward. I mean, we got the nursery ready without realizing that she wasn't going to spend any time in it at all for the first three months. And the whole visitors thing - well that didn't even cross my mind. I guess I just assumed that people would come and visit, because that's what people do after you have a baby. But most of the time I didn't want visitors! I spent a good chunk of the first 10 days in tears. (In fact my husband and I had a mini-celebration at bedtime on the 10th day because it was the first time I hadn't cried since she was born.) Sometimes I was able to get dressed and greet people…other times I was curled up in bed crying while my husband did the entertaining. The idea of saying “no visitors yet please” simply didn't cross my mind. That's what we discuss in today's episode with Renee Reina of The Mom Room. She was lucky enough to have her Mom living close by when she had her baby, who became her gatekeeper - friends and family would check in with Renee's Mom before coming over. Renee was able to create the calm, peaceful environment at home that she wanted to bring baby into - and re-engage with the world on her own terms, when she was ready. In this episode we talk about how to make those early days of motherhood work for you and your family - no matter what social conventions say are the right things to do. Those first weeks at home may be the hardest you'll ever experience If you're expecting a baby or have one under the age of one, the Right From The Start course is here to help. I run it with the amazing Hannah and Kelty of Upbringing, who bring a whole lot of expertise and training on respectful parenting, along with expertise on raising siblings and ‘spirited' children, in addition to the scientific research on these topics that you expect from me. In the course we'll give you concrete strategies to: Get the essential sleep you (all) need Create a secure attachment & navigate big feelings Support gross motor development & independent play (freeing up time for you!) Prepare for and thrive with siblings And so much more! Parents who have taken the course tell us that there's nothing else like it available: this is the only course that helps you support baby's development, while holding your needs as equally important, and helping you to meet these as well. Did you know that 1 in 4 couples sleep in separate beds?1 Despite this common experience, many people continue to feel a lot of stigma around speaking out about their need for a restful night's sleep - which may mean sleeping in a different room from your lover. People tend to learn that there must be something wrong with a relationship if a couple is sleeping in separate beds. There is a term for sleeping in separate beds that contributes to this learned stigma: "Sleep divorce." This term implies that sleeping apart is a sign of a relationship lacking in love and sex. But what if you continue to sleep in the same bed with restless night's sleep? Does your relationship improve or deteriorate? Are you more snappy and short with your partner the next day because their snoring kept you awake? Or maybe you feel a missing desire for your partner because you're the one waking with the baby all the time. I invited Renee Reina, Ph.D. in Psychology and host of the top-ranking parenting podcast "The Mom Room" to break through the stigma and talk about prioritizing sleep and continuing to nurture our relationships. In this episode, we discuss: Renee's community's surprising response to her disclosure of sleeping in separate roomsEarly messaging around parents not sharing bedsThe relationship progression she experienced in terms of bed sharing and sleeping with her partnerWhen sleeping in separate beds works - and when it doesn'tPrioritizing and making choices to nurture her relationship Links: Listen to Renee's progression of their relationship and sleep, tune into Episode 44Tune into our episode together on Mom Room about resentment and relationships Join me in my online community, Be Connected, to learn how to improve your communication and connection.

Do you find yourself wrestling with whether to have more children? Many moms I work with struggle with this decision for a number of reasons such as finances, the ideal family they had envisioned, their past birth or postpartum experience, and the readiness of their partner. While other parents may have come to the conclusion that they only want one child but feel pushed towards having more by the opinions and expectations of others. The choice to be one and done can come with a lot of guilt, shame, and pressure from others—but what matters is what YOU actually want for your family. Renee Reina, PhD is going to help us unpack how to know when you're one and done and then feel confident in that decision. Show Notes: https://bit.ly/3pgeu0j

Renee Reina is the mom friend you've always wanted. She is extremely relatable and finds the humour in everything about being a mom - the good, the bad, and the ugly. She isn't a parenting expert -- she's just a girl with a PhD who had a baby and decided it was time to stir sh*t up in the mom community. Today we sat down and discussed mom stuff, postpartum, sitting with our choices, expectations vs reality, academia vs influencing and what exactly IS a modern day village? Oh, and somehow - we talk about buttholes. After gaining a huge following on TikTok @ReneeReina_, she now shares on her podcast @TheMomRoomPodcast as well as Instagram @ReneeReina_with her hilarious mom content. With a goal of hoping that nobody ever feels alone in this wild thing called motherhood, ever again. Renee Reina had a full ride scholarship to a university in Florida to play volleyball. After her first semester, she realized that she missed playing volleyball for fun, and a move back home was in order. With the decision to switch schools and direction came the challenges of navigating her identity without volleyball, something she'd played for so many years of her life. Years later, Renee holds a Masters and a Ph. D in Psychology, has started a family, and is growing her social media platforms and podcast quickly and with intention. She's the Mom friend you've always wanted, with her relatability and her ability to find humour in all things Mom-life. With psychology training in defense mechanisms, attachment, and reflective functioning, this conversation is right up my alley!! We speak about the socialization of young girls, being quiet, and how crucial it is to share stories and questions and experiences regarding motherhood.
