"I am in a dress, I have gel in my hair, I haven't slept all night, I'm starved, and I'm armed! Don't *mess* with me!" We had author and comedian Elizabeth Teets over to discuss the Sandra Bullock classic Miss Congeniality, and HEY I'M GLIDING HERE!  We love a movie in which an otherwise stunner like Sandy Bullock is slapped with some glasses, frizzed out hair and a penchant for tripping over things and suddently we are to believe she's some kind of crone no straight man would give a second look to. We are suspending our disbelief for the sake of comedy and beleive me - Sandy is selling it! FBI Special Agent Gracie Hart doesn't wear makeup, can't walk in heels and in lesser hands this trope might not have worked, but there are some comedic chops throughout this cast. Heavy hitters like Michael Caine, Candice Bergen and yes even William Shatner are doing some great work here. We're not forgetting Benjamin Bratt and his chiseled face - did he go on to play nearly the same character in "Catwoman"? Maybe, but it's all good, he's charming and has some great chemistry with Sandy. Maybe you didn't start this episode thinking you'd get a deep dive into Candy Bergen's backstory (Yes she's the heiress to a ventriloquist fortune!) but hey it's here and now you have some Hollywood trivia you didn't know you needed. Don't worry, we address Ernie Hudson and how he hasn't aged a single day from this movie... he's been added to the list of celebs who took the potion. Oh and we have seen the sequel "Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous" but the original will always be the superior entry. Also, isn't it time that One In a Million gets its Murder on the Dancefloor renaissance?  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay X (Twitter): @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: X (Twitter) @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: X (Twitter)/Instagram @peterlasagna Elizabeth Teets Instagram: @elteets

It's a little late, but it's Sandy New Year! For the fourth year, Old Millennials Remember Movies celebrates January with a Sandra Bullock movie. To celebrate 2022, we watched one of the worst Sandy Bullock movies around - 1999's atrocious "romantic comedy," "Forces of Nature." Because the start of 2022 deserves this piece of turd. The year 1999 is often regarded as one of the great movie years, and "Forces of Nature" probably doesn't crack the Top 150 of movies released that year. It stars Ben Affleck, hot off "Armageddon," as a book cover blurb writer (laugh out loud at that job) who is traveling from New York to Savannah, Ga. to marry Tea Leo....err... we mean Maura Tierney. Well, a pre-Sully, Sully situation happens on the plane and boom, Ben needs to take trains, automobiles (and buses) in order to make it to his wedding. But ooooh, complication! Sandy Bullock plays the alluring free spirit who becomes his traveling buddy, and sparks fly! Just kidding! There's no chemistry whatsoever between the two stars. Somebody call a J. Lo. or a J. Gar. Stat! In all fairness, Sandy Bullock acquits herself well here, playing a character who is appealing, flawed and mostly believable. So why isn't she more of the focus of this movie? Why do we have to listen to Affleck do baby talk on an airplane phone to a barely seen Maura Tierney? How do you cast Steve Zahn as the funny sidekick character and give him almost nothing to do?! And do you even know what kind of a master you have here in Richard Schiff, the great character actor who would go on to crush it on "The West Wing." Why is he doing almost nothing as this tour guide character? Why is he wearing that awful hat?! Let's be honest: "Forces of Nature" is terrible, but Old Millennials hosts Tyler and Angela find plenty of fascinating things to talk about anyway, including a rather spirited, Tierney-centric game of "Angela Explains It All." Tyler tries to defend his boy Affleck, with his strategy mostly focusing on the good work he's done 20+ years after "Forces of Nature." Watch "The Way Back" and "The Last Duel"! Happy Sandy New Year! Cheers to a better 2022... but if it continues being lousy out there, we're going to subject everyone to "Speed 2: Cruise Control" to open 2023. Also discussed on this episode of Old Millennials Remember Movies The Last Duel (2021) The Tender Bar (2021) The Lost Daughter (2021) The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) The Protege (2021) Monster Hunter (2020) Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania (2022) Check out OMRM's previous Sandy New Year episodes: The Net - 1995 - episode 28 While You Were Sleeping - 1995 - episode 64 Miss Congeniality - 2000 - episode 96

It's Sandy New Year! We continue a January tradition of viewing an Old Millennials-era Sandra Bullock movie. For 2021, we're putting on our best pageant gowns for "Miss Congeniality," the comedy where a dorky FBI agent must go undercover at a Miss America-style beauty pageant in order to stop a terrorist attack. Terrorists blowing up young women... apparently hilarious! Sandy Bullock is a good agent (or is she?), but because she wears her hair up and snorts when she laughs, none of the bros at the FBI respect her. The chief douchebag is played by Benjamin Bratt, who CAN'T. STOP. CHEWING. ON. FOOD. for the entire movie. Good grief, man, eat on your own time. We're watching a charming Sandy Bullock movie here! Michael Caine co-stars as a pageant guru, William Shatner and Candice Bergen play the pageant's head honchos, and a few other dummies run around the movie ogling the women. Look... Sandy Bullock looks hot all of a sudden! What a shocking turn of events! While both Old Millennnials hosts admire Sandy's charming lead performance, there's some debate about how "Miss Congeniality" goes about sidestepping all its ingrained and rampant misogyny. And HOW is Bratt set up to be the romantic lead here? Between all the sexist comments, dopey mugging and excessive, open-mouthed chewing, there's no way this guy deserves to date ANY GIRL at the end. At least Sandy beats the crap out of him as part of her self-defense presentation during the pageant's talent segment. The Old Millennials also talk pageants in general ("What's your idea of a perfect date?"), the episode of "Seinfeld" where Jerry dates a pageant contender and how Sandra Bullock just might be one of the best pratfall comedians ever. She trips and falls better than Steve Urkel! At the end of this episode, you'll want to HUUGGG US. You'll want to KIIIIIIISSSS US. You'll think we're GORRRRRGEOUS. The rest of the podcast is a bit of an homage to Sandra Bullock with discussions on the The Lakehouse (I still don’t understand it) and late 90’s megahit While You Were Sleeping where time, luck and circumstance thrusts Bullock into the loving arms of the Callaghan family and the dueling hearts of a comatose Peter Gallagher (and his eyebrows) and his down to earth furniture-making brother played by Bill Pullman. You can almost time it. When a hometown kid arrives, the “we knew her when” pieces aren’t far behind. Shortly after The Help made Octavia Spencer famous, The Birmingham News interviewed Jefferson Davis High School guidance counselor Mrs. Evelyn Moore. “Whatever she did, she did it well and she was never shy. You knew she just had it…there was something about Octavia that stood out and everyone knew she would be something.” Evelyn Moore knew it. The Help writer/director Tate Taylor knew it. What took the rest of us so long? Octavia Spencer graduated ol’ Jefferson Davis in 1988. She was one of seven kids raised by her mom Dellsena Spencer, who worked as a maid and died when Spencer was a teenager. She went on to Auburn University, where you might be surprised to learn she did not study to become an RN, considering it’s a job she’s done between 30 and 40 times on screen, along with an almost equal number of largely nameless cashiers and security guards. Spencer actually majored in English with a double minor in journalism and theater, and the role she originally planned for herself was behind the camera. She worked in casting on a number of local Alabama productions and finally asked to audition for the role of a political agitator in Joel Schumacher’s A Time to Kill. “Joel said, ‘No honey, your face is too sweet. You can be Sandy [Bullock]’s nurse,’” Spencer recalls. Well, there you have it. Her friend and fellow Southerner Tate Taylor encouraged her to move to L.A. in 1997 to pursue acting, and she quickly dotted scores of movies and TV shows, most often in the aforementioned capacities. As briefly or namelessly as she might have appeared, she grabbed us every time. Her face is sweet, but we learned it could morph in a moment to comic wide-eyed disbelief, steely don’t-screw-with-me resolve, wry skepticism, or genuine warmth – making her one of the best reactors in the business. Her roles in Big Momma's House, Miss Congeniality 2, Beauty Shop, Moesha, Chicago Hope, and Ugly Betty, (to name 6 out of nearly 100), were often cited as one of their bright spots, and Entertainment Weekly named her one of Hollywood’s 25 funniest women. Yet after 15 years, most of us still knew her as, “Oh yeah, that funny, sassy black lady.” Then came her appearance as the funny, sassy maid Minny Jackson in The Help, a role that was hers before the screenplay was ever written. When the author of the novel it was based on was having difficulty finding the character’s voice, she called her friend Octavia for help. When Spencer finally embodied Minny on the screen, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “Spencer’s scrappy Minny Jackson provides not only comic relief but a feistiness that shows that some maids found the gumption and means to get back at overbearing employers. Hers is a great character, the antithesis of Gone With the Wind’s Mammy, and she nearly upends this movie with her righteous sass.” You know the story from there. More raves, wide recognition and an Oscar ensued, and voilà! – no more nurse roles. No, now she was being offered maids. And the offers were substantial, but Spencer knew she had to start saying no to stereotypes to continue growing as an artist, and that she’d need to step outside the studios to show what she could do. She appeared in “Smashed,” James Ponsoldt’s 2012 rumination on alcoholism, and NPR called out her bitingly emotional performance as the mother of Oscar Grant, the young black man shot by a white Oakland transit officer in Fruitvale Station. Then came the dystopian sci-fi Snowpiercer and 2015’s Black or White, in which Spencer starred opposite Kevin Costner, playing Rowna Jeffers, the protective grandmother of a biracial girl. “Ms. Spencer turns the strict, truth-telling Rowena into a mighty force,” said The New York Times. “Her wide-eyed stare gives her the gravity of an all-seeing sage who doesn’t miss a trick and is not afraid to speak her mind. Rowena may be a clichéd Earth Mother, but Ms. Spencer imbues her with a fierce severity.” She stepped back into studio films in a big, Oscar-nominated way with Hidden Figures, playing mathematician Dorothy Vaughan. Despite her reluctance to do period films (no “period” to date having been particularly uplifting to the African- American experience), her anger made her unable to resist. She thought a story about black women working for NASA in the ’60s had to be fiction. No – it was just one of many real stories that never get told. Despite the range of roles she’s being offered now, Spencer’s joked that she’s yet to play anyone remotely like herself, a single, rom-com lovin’ kinda lady. But she sees one that very much fits the bill. At this year’s Makers conference she told Gloria Steinem “The role I'm destined to play is to be one of the greatest producers in Hollywood. It's a huge undertaking, but I want to be a conduit for storytellers." She’s already put her money where her mouth is. She became a producer on Fruitvale Station to help with its financing, and continues to support minority directors and young actors. She’s currently producing a biopic series of Madame C.J. Walker, the first self-made African American female millionaire. Where she is not putting her money is homogeneity. “If I look down a list of characters on a film, and it doesn’t have gay, African-American or Latino characters, I’m probably not going to spend my money on the ticket,” she told Deadline. “When we stop supporting things with our dollars that don’t represent all of us, then you’ll see an explosion of diversity. Art is about reaching people that you wouldn’t normally reach. It’s about bringing us together.” Spencer determined long ago that BMWs and five-closet wardrobes weren’t going to determine when she arrived. It would be when she was steering the ship. But maybe the best measure of success is what you do with your ship when it comes in. “After Hidden Figures, I don’t have a problem saying to a room of male executives: ‘I need a female writer or a female director,’ or ‘I need a black voice or a Latin voice. I don’t feel bad about that.” To some, that might sound like sass. To us, it sounds like a boss.

Starring Keanu Reeves and Sandy Bullock, we have a need, a need for "Speed." Faced with such questions as what happened to the deadman trigger? and was that the nicest dressed homeless woman in LA,? Twitty and Bran ultimately decide to just let go and get fully pumped for this one.  Following that up is a quick dive into a movie that is somehow both dystopian and fashion forward. We ask "The Warriors" to come out and play, and settle in for a breakdown of this New York's quirky and ineffectual gangs. Can You Dig It?

Today we don our phoenix tattoos, we get honest with ourselves, we blaze our very own comeback trail talking Ben Affleck! With his drama The Way Back in theaters, we discuss four past B-Sides you may have missed: 1999's Sandy Bullock-meets-Ben rom-com Forces of Nature, 2000's Gwyneth-meets-Ben high-concept romance Bounce, 2002's Sam Jackson-meets-Ben thriller Changing Lanes and, last-but-least, 2006's Ben-Plays-Superman noir Hollywoodland. In between these B-sides exists the movie star's career nadir, including Gigli, Paycheck and Surviving Christmas (which we already discussed in our holiday episode). Conor and Dan are joined by Marie Bardi (@mariebardi), New York-based producer and avowed Ben Affleck fan. We talk about the phrase “strip dancing” and if anybody actually says it, we debate the trajectory of Ben's likeability and acknowledge how many of the roles he's taken over the years reflect the real-life hurdles in his life.
