In this episode, CJ "Fiery" Obasi, the visionary filmmaker behind MAMI WATA, discusses his creative journey, the cultural narratives that shape his work and the commercial and creative path of a storyteller. CJ reflects on his early influences, including a passion for Hammer Horror films and Stephen King novels, and how these elements have informed his unique storytelling approach. He discusses the challenges and triumphs of bringing MAMI WATA to life, a film that intertwines African folklore with contemporary themes, and shares insights into the significance of genre filmmaking within the African cinema landscape. The conversation also explores the business of being a storyteller and entrepreneur, the future of African screen storytelling, and the evolving role of technology and AI in filmmaking. About C.J. Obasi C.J. Obasi also known as “Fiery” or “The Fiery One” wrote and directed the feature films OJUJU & O-TOWN, both of which has screened in many festivals, including the Gothenburg Film Festival and Fantasia Film Festival, garnering acclaim from the likes of Screen Anarchy, IndieWire, & The Hollywood Reporter. WELCOME, one and all, to the long-awaited premiere of season 4! Today, your good ol' host, Shift Orion, is joined by Nick Roth and Lindsey Haun. Shift and Nick met while wandering around in the howling abyss of social media. Nick was looking for podcasts to talk about his new movie, Hanky Panky, and Shift was looking for inspiration to reboot this show. So Nick hailed Lindsey to join Shift for a chat about this fantastic, whacky, elevated, innovative film made with love under crazy conditions. And they also talk about other things like Nick and Lindsey's kids, Nick's upcoming haunted dreidel film, Lindsey's dark and vague works in progress, and Shift's upcoming sci-fi about an average white American man who gets knocked up by an alien parasite just after landing his dream job and has flashbacks to that one time he tried to convince his teenage girlfriend to not have an abortion.  We hope you enjoy this episode and then go watch Hanky Panky on Tubi! Special thanks to Gina Mangiaracinage for hooking it up with the functioning Internet that carried this episode to your ear holes while my Internet was not working. Nick & Lindsey, Co-Directors:  Hanky Panky marks the feature debut of frequent collaborators and future Hollywood power couple Nick and Lindsey. Lindsey is a gold-record winning singer/songwriter, an actor and horror icon (Village of the Damned, Trueblood, Shrooms, Color of Friendship), and a director of several award-winning short films and music videos. She is repped by Bohemia Group. Nick is a former middle-school substitute Latin teacher, current pun factory, and film and television writer who most recently wrote on ABC sitcom American Housewife. He is repped by Zero Gravity.   About HANKY PANKY  Logline: A man and his talking handkerchief save the world from an evil top-hat, and also learn to love. Genre: Puppets and Blood. Runtime: 86 minutes, 4 of which is a fight scene between a napkin and a hat. Full Synopsis: When sweet and quirky ayahuasca marriage counselor Diane mistakenly invites the wrong “Sam” to a retreat she's co-hosting with friends and family at an isolated snowy mountain cabin, instead of her best friend's sister Samantha showing up, she gets Sam, a socially anxious oddball who has brought his best friend, Woody, a foul-mouthed talking handkerchief Sam believes only he can hear, and who is sexually aroused by cleaning up messes. Diane is Sam's opposite, but it's love at first sight. The only thing that stands between them is that right away everyone in the cabin starts being mysteriously murdered, and the whole vacation quickly descends into a zany pandemonium of cults, psychedelics, aliens, and, as Woody himself puts it, delicious chaos. Short Synopsis: A socially anxious oddball and his best friend, a foul-mouthed talking handkerchief who is sexually aroused by cleaning up messes, must confront an inter-dimensional evil in order to save the world and find true love. We shot Hanky Panky in Lindsey's dad's cabin in the mountains above Heber, Utah, where the entire cast and crew crammed together, at 8,000ft of elevation, during the most intense blizzard ever recorded there. It was a true anarcho-communist-guerilla production: literally no budget, nobody got paid, everyone chipped in for food and drugs, and we all cooperatively own the film now. We shot it on a camera our team won with a short film at Slamdance in 2015. A friend who shoots porn let us borrow his lights. By far our biggest expense was that Lindsey backed her car into Nick's in the blizzard and knocked out a headlight, so that did cost us like $900 to fix. It was crazy. Everyone went a little bit crazy. Some of us went a lot a bit crazy. It's our hope that a bunch of that fun, contagious craziness has ended up on the screen. Without Your Head's Diablo Joe reviews "Seire" out June 16th on VOD and digital. @FilmMovement  "In Korean folk traditions, "seire" is the twenty-one days after a baby is born in which they're uniquely vulnerable to bad luck, curses - even evil spirits. Many superstitions surround these first three weeks in a baby's life, and new mother Hae-mi carefully follows every one of them. Father Woo-jin is reluctantly willing to play along, but when he attends an ex-girlfriend's funeral, he unwittingly opens the door to to dark supernatural dangers. Plagued by terrible nightmares, the skeptical Woo-jin gradually begins to understand the seire custom, as he is forced to unravel the mystery of what is haunting him and his family. Heralding the arrival of a fresh new voice in Korean genre cinema, Park Kang's "chilling indie horror debut" (Screen Anarchy), an Official Selection in the Fantasia New Flesh Competition, was nominated for Best Film and captured the New Currents FIPRESCI Prize at the Busan International Film Festival, and also received a nomination for a Golden Eye Best International Feature at the 2022 Zurich Film Festival." A story about a corrupt prison system, eyeball damage, crowd-provided exposition, and magically appearing items.Listen in as me and returning guest, Joe, dust off our whistle-leafs and stretch our muscles in preparation for this knock-down, head-smasher of a film.Directed by X (FILM, FILM) and written by X (FILM, FILM), Screen Anarchy said "this may be the greatest film ever made," while Cinemagazine called it "a movie with a lot of flaws." Well... Sounds like someone didn't understand just how brilliant this splatter-fu movie is!It tells the story of Riki-Oh (Siu-Wong Fan), a young man with superhuman strength and a soft spot for the weak, the lame, and the bullied. In a world where prisons have become privatized, prisoner abuse runs rampant with no system of order apart from the corrupt warden and his staff as well as a small band of gang bosses. Well, Ricky ain't gonna stand for that. Once he sees an old man beaten up, he starts to show just how dangerous he is and it isn't long before the assistant warden, Cyclops Dan (played by Siu-Wong's father, Mei Cheng Fan), initiates a plan to take Ricky out of the equation. Dismemberment, disemboweling, and cranial fractures follow. The film is currently available on Amazon Prime Video, Tubi, DVD, and Blu-ray.

A story about animals dying, people dying, meditations on dying, and really weird music choices. Listen in as me and my guest Devon discuss the film whose legend is nearly without equal. Written and directed by John Alan Schwartz (Faces of Death 1-6), Screen Anarchy called the film "a curious bit of film history, but nothing more," while Mondo Bizarro said "this movie sucks." Well, seems like folks aren't as bowled over by this film as they were when it blew up in the 80s via the VHS market. It tells the story... Okay, well, it's not really a story. It's a documentary about death. That's pretty much it. We are introduced to a "pathologist" named Dr. Gross (played by Michael Carr) who tells us he decided to study death and the film is the summation of his findings. Albeit, the lore around this film shines brighter and rings louder than the work itself, one cannot deny its infamy. To truly appreciate what was done here you need to think about the world in which it was made, then you will see that this really was rather subversive. The film is currently available on Blu-Ray and DVD.

A story about young love, magical days, addictions, and no more books. Listen in as me and resident specialist in Breenism, Richard, as we plumb the depths of this strange and abstruse masterpiece. Written, directed, produced, and edited by master indie auteur Neil Breen (Double Down, I Am Here.... Now, Fateful Findings, Pass Thru, Twisted Pair), Screen Anarchy called the film "compelling in its pervasive oddness," and Indie Film Cafe said "never in history has $25.95 plus shipping and handling been more wisely spent!" With acclaim like that do you really need more reasons to see this? If so, did you know that Breen was also the accountant, craft service, special make-up effects, location manager, production designer, sound editor, lighting design, wardrobe, and set decorator for the film? This man's talent knows no bounds! It tells the story of Dylan (the head honcho, Breen), an author of one book and hacker of many government and corporate secrets, as he suffers a car accident that sets him on a collision course with his childhood love, Leah. Along the way magical things happen, he hacks more secrets, sees psychiatrists, people get murdered, hotdogs get knocked over, and lots of looooong pauses in dialogue are taken. Look, I cannot possibly do this film justice trying to explain it. See it in all it's glory for yourself. The film is currently available for rent or purchase Amazon Prime or Apple TV, and on DVD at https://www.fatefulfindings.biz/.

As teenagers, kung fu disciples Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. Fast forward 25 years, and each has grown into a washed-up middle-aged man seemingly one kick away from pulling a hamstring—and not at all preoccupied with thoughts of martial arts or childhood best friends. But when their old master is murdered, the trio reunites, soon learning that avenging their sifu will require conquering old grudges (and a dangerous hitman still armed with ample knee cartilage) if they are to honorably defend his legacy. Tran Quoc Bao | Writer/Director/Editor Mentored early on by master action director Corey Yuen, Bao was instilled with an approach to action that doesn’t rely solely on spectacle, but also draws on story and character. Mentored early on by master action director Corey Yuen, Bao was instilled with an approach to action that doesn't rely solely on spectacle, but also draws on story and character. Screen Anarchy praised his written-and-directed short Bookie for its “flawlessly realized world populated by entirely fleshed out and believable characters, driven by a compelling narrative and brought to sumptuous life.” He has since traveled back to his homeland of Vietnam to work as a feature film editor. His editing credits include Cho Lon, one of Southeast Asia's highest-budgeted action blockbusters, and Jackpot, a heartfelt comedy selected as Vietnam's official entry to the 2016 Oscars for Best Foreign Film. Ain't It Cool News enthusiastically declared Bao as “a director I expect to see big things from.”   How to not be complacent in your life and career How to go for your dreams and passions The importance of mentorship Using the dreams of your childhood to guide you in the decisions you make in adulthood The film industry of Vietnam and struggles of censorship The evolution of film editing throughout the years How to support Asian American filmmakers What “It's a Wonderful Life” and “The Terminator” have in common   The Paper Tigers Movie Kickstarter   POV Films website   theasianamericanvoice.com/podcast/39 "Like" our Facebook page for updates on future shows and other resources: https://www.facebook.com/TheAsianAmericanVoice/
