First, your combination of technical and business/financial background is fascinating. How did you go from coding at NASA to Head of Product at Zynga to CEO/CFO for a finance platform startup? Give everyone a quick introduction.Topic 2 - One thing I've noticed as a trend in your background is the core concept of building. What has been your philosophy in building products? How do you build products that customers demand?Topic 3 -  Let's talk about AI and AGI for a moment. We hear all the time how disruptive this will be. What are your thoughts here, and how do we develop both adaptability and resiliency to new technologies?Topic 4 - Let's talk FP&A (financial planning & analysis). Our core listeners out there tend to skew more towards the tech and infrastructure side, but a core theme of this show is always to be learning as much of the business as possible to apply those concepts. As someone with a background in both worlds, plus now running an FP&A startup, what do you wish folks on the technical side of the house knew more about to make their jobs easier?Topic 5 - We posted a link in the show notes for a video you did on the “overnight success” of Runway. It was a good representation and origin story of how something can go viral with the right mindset and product-market fit. Tell everyone about that as Runway approaches 5 years now. Topic 6 - What is your biggest challenge in the FP&A space today? Is it AI? We've seen a lot of AI disruption in coding, legal, and other areas requiring deep data pool insights. Runway CEO and co-founder Siqi Chen shares how his team used a waitlist not just to build hype, but to engineer smarter growth. In this episode of Fund/Build/Scale, Siqi breaks down how Runway strategically kept customers in a holding pattern to gather feedback, qualify demand, and refine product-market fit. We also talk about: How to build trust with early users through transparency Using scarcity and access control as GTM levers Why financial planning should be accessible to everyone on the team What most founders get wrong about burn rate and cash flow Whether you're in the early stages or prepping for launch, this episode offers a masterclass in thoughtful, tactical go-to-market execution. RUNTIME 39:46 EPISODE BREAKDOWN (2:49) “ What if somebody worked on a Figma for finance?” (5:48) “ You have to understand what are the different levers of the machine, and how the machine works.” (8:50) Why Runway represents a cultural shift in corporate transparency. (11:51) How much financial literacy should founders try to foster across their organizations?  (14:48) How much runway should a startup aim for? Marshall was on the show last year for his documentary short "A Night at the Garden" that was nominated for an Oscar and it was great to have him back on the show. While this is Siqi Song's first Oscar nomination, she was also part of the art department for the Oscar nominated animated film "Missing Link".  It was great to talk with Marshall about the new venture into Live Action Shorts instead of the Documentaries that he's best known for, and hear about how his film "The Neighbors Window" came together. Siqi's film "Sister" was her final student film project that tells such a unique story of the One Child Law in China. She used an incredible form of stop motion animation using yarn to build all of her characters.  I had such a great time talking to both of these Oscar nominees and can't want to see what happens this Sunday during the 92nd Academy Awards. Make sure to visit ShortsTV on the site below to be able to watch all of the Oscar Nominated Shorts or find them in a theater near you.  Thanks, Marshall and Siqi! Enjoy the episode.

A man thinks back to his childhood memories of growing up with an annoying little sister in China in the 1990s. What would his life have been like if things had gone differently? Directors Statement - The genesis of SISTER came from a question I get asked a lot throughout my childhood: What is it like to grow up with a sibling? As a “Little Sister” myself, I was born as the second child in my family at the height of China’s One Child Policy. At that time, it’s really hard to have a second child in one family. Luckily, my parents put in a lot of effort to keep me and raise me. Otherwise, I would not have existed and lived a life. Although many other “Second Child” in my generation never had a chance to get born. Therefore most of my friends don’t have siblings. Growing up with my brother has been a privilege and a bittersweet experience for me. Throughout my childhood, the question that had been asked a lot by friends is that, what is it like to grow up with a sibling? So, I have been telling stories about me and my brother since I was a kid. And I have heard stories of my friends and cousins could not have little sisters and brothers because of the one-child policy. The narrator of this film, for example, told me that he lost a younger sister when he was four years old. He always imagines how his life would be if his sister was ever born. So, I want to make a film to tell my friends what it is like to grow up with a sibling. More importantly, I also want to tell the stories of my friends, who would’ve had a different life if their siblings were born. This film is dedicated to this group memory. - Siqi Song Director’s Biography - Siqi Song is a Chinese writer, director and animator, currently based in Los Angeles. This week, our featured topic is Chinese students overseas. There are about 800,000 of them, and according to China’s Ministry of Education, nearly 80 percent choose to return to China soon after finishing their education. This group is referred to as “sea turtles” (海龟; a pun on 海归 hǎiguī, meaning “to return from overseas”) for their ambitious swim to and from faraway shores. Historically, overseas Chinese students were almost exclusively from the wealthiest and best-educated families in Chinese society, but nowadays, the group is dramatically more diverse. The new students abroad, however, face many of the same identity issues that the previous generations faced. Chinese students who are studying at American universities are, as Eric Fish put it in an article on SupChina recently, caught in a cross fire. Many of these 300,000-plus students find themselves grappling with their Chinese — or, as most Americans simply see it, “Asian” — identity for the first time, and are taken aback by the biased views that many Americans have about China. They feel forced to choose: to either defend their country against ignorant attacks, or take very Americanized worldviews to prove that they are not “brainwashed.” But if they go too far and adopt too liberal of a viewpoint, they may get accused back home of being a “white-left” (白左 báizuǒ; a derogatory term for white Western liberals). To discuss the ideology and identity issues at play, as well as more routine aspects of the Chinese student experience in America, we welcome Eric Fish — the author of China’s Millennials, who is now working on a second book about university students from China in the U.S. — and Siqi Tu — a graduate student in sociology at the City University of New York looking at Chinese high school students in America. The podcast was recorded live in New York at the China Institute on March 14. Recommendations: Jeremy: For anyone who (like him) is having trouble with the American bureaucracy regulating septic tanks as they try to build a house in a holler (what people in Tennessee call a hollow, or a small valley between two hills), Jeremy recommends the Sun-Mar Compact Composting Toilet and the EcoJohn Waterless Incinerating Toilet. No septic permit necessary! Siqi: Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It’s written by a Nigerian immigrant to America about her experience figuring out racial identity in the country, finding love, and then undergoing reverse culture shock upon returning to Nigeria.   Eric: Fortunate Sons: The 120 Chinese Boys Who Came to America, Went to School, and Revolutionized an Ancient Civilization, by Liel Leibovitz and Matthew Miller. It’s about the experience of what is considered the first group of Chinese students to come over to the U.S., way back in 1872. Kaiser: America Right or Wrong: An Anatomy of American Nationalism, by Anatol Lieven, an incredibly prescient book written six years ago.

Today, our Siqi got the chance to land at a beautiful place called Brown Bluff. There they not only saw the lovely penguins, what's more exciting is that they were very lucky to have a glacier hiking on a beautiful day. Reporter: Landing ashore is always the most exciting part of traveling to Antarctica. There you can get the chance to watch different species of penguins and seals closely and enjoy the wonderful view of the whole island. And today we landed at Brown Bluff, a towering rust-coloured and ice capped, flat topped mountain. Our tour guide Juan Carlos gave us a brief introduction about this beautiful place. (Sb1, Juan) It's a continental landing. And Brown Bluff is also home to A**** and G**** Penguins. (penguins) Do you hear the sound? (am) Yes! They are from the lovely penguins. Now I can say penguins are definitely the cutest animal I've ever seen. At Brown Bluff, there are two kinds of penguins: A**** and G**** Penguins. It's very easy to tell. Will Wagstaff is the penguin expert in the expedition team. (SB2, Will) After observing these penguins for half an hour, I found something interesting. Compared to G**** penguins, A**** penguins seem noisier and they never stop. They always keep walking, jumping or swimming. And they always stay together with their friends or families. So you'll usually see a group of them. And today besides watching the lovely penguins, we were so lucky to get the chance to have glacier hiking, which means a guided walk up a glacier. Walking conditions here were over sections of ice and snow and could be very slippery and difficult in areas. It's much harder than normal hiking. (am Hana) During the walk, many people gave up. But fortunately, I climbed to the top. The view was fantastic above. So not being on the top, you'll never know what a wonderful view you can get. But only if conditions allow can you have the opportunity to go glacier hiking. The tour guide Juan Carlos told us there are many conditions, such as it has to to be accessible, the surface can't be too steep. (Sb3, Juan) So we are really lucky today. But we're not always so lucky. The weather in Antarctica is always changeable, you'll never know what will happen in next minute. For example, yesterday, we landed at a placed called penguin island, but right after a few minutes, we were called back to the ship because strong wind is coming. On our way back, the wind became stronger and stronger, all my clothes, bags and gloves got wet by the sea wave even though they are all water-proof. And the tour guide told us once they encountered exactly the same weather when they landed at penguin island. And they were forced to stay there for over 20 hours waiting to be rescued. So now I truly understand the saying that in Antarctica it's not the clocks or calendars, but the weather to determine you itinerary and timetable. Just like what our expedition leader said, this is Antarctica, you'll never exciting parts of this white continent.
