STEVE LUKATHER DENIES RUMORS OF PLAYING GUITAR ON NEW VAN HALEN ALBUM TOTO's Steve Lukather has dismissed recent reports suggesting he will play guitar on a new VAN HALEN album. Earlier this week, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that Alex Van Halen was working on a collection of previously unreleased VAN HALEN recordings, with Lukather assisting in completing them. In a paywalled Guitar World article, Alex was quoted as saying: “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and often worked together. There's no one better suited to help me through this process.” Lukather, seemingly surprised by the comment, responded in the same article: “Did Alex say that? Oh, in that case, the news is true. Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It's true that we worked on this together.” However, on Saturday (March 15), Lukather took to Instagram to clarify his involvement, writing: “For the record: Ever since Alex Van Halen mentioned we were going to work together, there's been a huge misunderstanding. I will NEVER play a single note on a VAN HALEN song—ever! Al asked me to help sort through a ton of unfinished recordings of him and Ed writing and recording together—music that never saw the light of day. That's all I know at this point. The idea that I would play guitar on this is ridiculous. I have too much love and respect for Ed and his music. Plus, I don't play anything like him. My role is more of a co-producer, if anything. I'm honored Al would ask me. Let's see…” Alex has previously stated there's enough material in the VAN HALEN vault for “three or four albums.” On Chris Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast, he shared: “I've talked about it loosely, and I'm a bit superstitious, but I can say this: We're going through the vault, digging into the ideas Ed left behind. There's some great stuff in there. When you're in the thick of it, sometimes you miss the real gems. It's only when you revisit them later that you realize, ‘Wow, I forgot about this. This kicks ass.' But it takes time. I want to do it right.” LUKATHER & VAN HALEN'S HISTORY Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather had a long history of collaboration. Lukather played the main riff on Michael Jackson's Beat It, while Eddie provided the iconic solo. Eddie also played bass on Lukather's debut solo album and made a guest appearance on Steve's 2003 Christmas album, Santamental. Following Eddie's passing in 2020, Lukather reflected on their friendship in an interview with Metal Master Kingdom: “It's still hard for me—the wound is deep. I was honored to be Ed's real friend, not just a guitar buddy. Our friendship lasted over 40 years. I love all the guys in VAN HALEN. I'm Switzerland when it comes to their relationships. I was just on Sammy's [Hagar] show, and he was great to me. Mike [Anthony] is always kind. But I've always stayed especially close with Al. Losing Ed left a hole in my heart that won't go away. We didn't just talk about guitars—we talked about our kids, our lives. Toward the end, we mostly just bragged about our sons. That's what mattered.” While Lukather's role in the VAN HALEN project remains undefined, one thing is clear—his deep respect for Eddie ensures the music's legacy will be handled with care. In an unexpected turn of events, reports from the Netherlands suggest that Alex Van Halen is working on a brand-new Van Halen album, and he's enlisted Steve Lukather to help complete the project! For years, speculation surrounded the Van Halen name—whether it was the abandoned tribute tour featuring Jason Newsted and Joe Satriani or Sammy Hagar's Best of All Worlds Tour keeping the music alive. But now, it looks like a 13th Van Halen studio album is actually happening! Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he's working with Lukather, stating, “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can.” Lukather responded, “Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It is true that we worked on it together.” Lukather's connection to the Van Halen brothers runs deep—from jamming together to Eddie playing bass on Lukather's solo album and even collaborating on Michael Jackson's Beat It! But the big question remains:

Guest host Richard Syrett (Twitter) was joined by researcher Stephen Sakellarios to discuss reincarnation, his past life experience, and a conspiracy theory regarding 19th-century author Charles Dickens. According to Sakellarios, Dickens did not originate "A Christmas Carol" but instead adapted it from the works of Mathew Franklin Whittier and his wife, Abby. He argued that elements of mysticism and spiritualism in "A Christmas Carol" are inconsistent with Dickens' other works. Sakellarios highlighted evidence such as Mathew's affiliation with spiritualist organizations and Abby's mystic poetry, arguing that Dickens, a materialist and skeptic, could not have authentically incorporated such themes.Sakellarios referenced instances in Dickens' career that suggest a pattern of appropriation, such as his involvement with illustrator Robert Seymour, whose work on The Pickwick Papers he believes Dickens manipulated and claimed credit for, driving Seymour to despair. Similarly, he cited a letter Dickens wrote with a Freudian slip that implies he "fastened on" rather than created "A Christmas Carol." The Whittiers likely sought to inspire social change through the story, but after Abby's death, Mathew entrusted the manuscript to Dickens, who reworked it under financial pressure, he suggested.Sakellarios described an intriguing connection to what he believes is a past life as Mathew Franklin Whittier, centering on an architectural detail in a house believed to be tied to Mathew and Abby. The story begins with a vision of Abby leading Mathew up the stairs of a house and into a small, hidden room resembling a linen closet. This unique feature—a door seemingly cut into the wall, leading to a nine-by-nine room midway between floors—turned out to exist in two houses linked to Abby's family property. The architectural detail, which Sakellarios had never encountered before, matched his vision and was corroborated during research. This and other details solidify Sakellarios's belief that he is the reincarnation of Whittier.TOTO, The Beatles, & Yacht RockIn the first hour, musician Steve Lukather reflected on his extraordinary career with a mix of humility and gratitude, emphasizing the milestones that have defined his journey. As a founding member of TOTO, he experienced global success, including Grammy-winning albums and hit singles like "Africa" and "Rosanna". Lukather talked about his work as a session guitarist on numerous iconic projects, including Michael Jackson's Thriller, where he contributed to tracks "The Girl Is Mine" and "Beat It". He described working with legends Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr as surreal, particularly given his lifelong admiration for The Beatles, who inspired his love for music after he saw them perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. Lukather also discussed his participation in the recent Yacht Rock documentary.

Steve Lukather is one of the most documented guitarists in the hit-making biz. He grew up as an L.A. teen with a crew of fellow musicians who would go on to make their livings at the top of the session scene. By the time Lukather and his pals formed Toto, they were already experienced chart-toppers. The band went on to success with hits including the rockin' “Hold the Line,” breezy, bouncing “Rosanna,” and the timeless “Africa.”As a session player, Lukather's reign in the '70s and ‘80s extended from Olivia Newton-John to Herbie Hancock to Michael Jackson. And alongside Michael McDonald—whose “I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)” included Lukather's distinctive rhythm riffage—Daryl Hall and John Oates, Kenny Loggins, Peter Cetera, and Christopher Cross (among many others) he may have earned the title of yacht rock's number one guitar player. On this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast, we're talking about our favorite Lukather tracks, from his best rhythm parts to his most rippin' solos. Toto's Joseph Williams Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Hold the line! What a way to reenter this arena - with arena rockstar Joseph Williams of Toto! I had the best time - can't stop smiling. Joseph could not have been more accessible, personable, humble, willing, thoughtful, informative… entertaining, and warm––like a fuzzy blanket on a cool summer night. Just loved every minute. I watched quite a few interviews with Joseph to get to know him a bit before sitting down with him. All that I saw were centered around the music of Toto and Joseph's solo work––the songs, the musicians, the concerts. Fascinating! I wanted to know about the kid, the son, the man, the artist, the vocalist, the composer, who thrived, who struggled, who acted out, who cleaned up, and that's exactly what generous Joseph gave us, no holds barred, no lines held, as it were. From his earliest days with his dad, John Williams, making genius in the other room, his actress-singer mother, Barbara Ruick, turning life into songs, he and his siblings performing on cue for their parents' esteemed party guests, and forming their first band, together, picking up his first drink, finding mischief, getting busted, breaking bones, boarding school leading to his first gig… jingles, Vegas, Star Search - one story better than the last - to auditioning for Toto - how he got it, what it meant - how he lost it - what he did to ensure that it would never happen again - composing, scoring- working with a guy named Snuffy, guesting with Toto and Bobby Kimball, rejoining the band in 2010, now he and Lukather the two remaining old guard… full circle - still touring - and miraculously still a Novid! I easily could have chatted with Joseph for hours more. Can't wait till September to see Toto at The Hollywood Bowl and to celebrate Joseph's 64th birthday. He's sober, a grandpa, a good son, making great music, and living his dream. He's honored his legacy. Bravo! Standing O! Lukather. The name has been synonymous with incredible musicianship for nearly five decades, and the legacy continues with Trev Lukather. Similar to his father, the guitarist, producer, songwriter, and band leader has been carving a path through the music industry, but doing so in his own, unique way. Trev's current focus is The Effect, a band project that recently formed and includes another legacy musician, drummer Nic Collins, the son of legendary Genesis band member, Phil Collins. Steve Maggiora, who also tours with Toto, provides keyboards and backing vocals, with incredible lead vocals from Emmett Stang. So far, The Effect has only released two songs from their forthcoming album, but if “Unwanted” and “Something Wrong” are an indication of what we'll hear on the rest of the album, there's no question that we're about to experience a fantastic rock album. Here to discuss The Effect is Trev Lukather.

I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design and in this episode of the podcast, you are going to hear from designer, Elisa Baran. Baran and her eponymous bi-coastal firm are responsible for some interesting new looks. She has a very unique perspective on materiality, and the meaning of perfection in her work. Part of this includes application of wabi-sabi and brutalism in her otherwise softer and muted work for what is truly a unique new look, one that I believe will gain traction as Elisa garners more attention. Before we get to my chat with Baran, it's time for another BOOKLOOK segment of the show featuring; Homes By Byrd, The Art and Architecture of Robert Byrd and His Son Gary, a new offering by Chris Lukather showcasing the work of Robert Byrd and his son Gary, as the title suggests. This book is an amazingly fun trot down memory lane for people like me who grew up in SoCal and love architecture. Byrd rose to prominence at a time when one could perform the work of an architect without actually being a licensed architect. For those of you who listened to the tragic story of 1001 North Roxbury. In that situation, not Byrd, but Carlton L. Burgess designed a world-class home despite not being a licensed architect.  I wonder if he had been licensed, if that might have dampened his creative approach to residential design? First Robert Byrd and then later, work by his son, Gary represent some of the most identifiable architecture of the San Fernando Valley. The whimsical approach to residential design with flagstone patios, leaded glass windows, fun and fanciful brickwork, shingles and forever views of pools, canyons, yards and open spaces. Low slung walls with rooflines that seemingly extend off cliffs. Turret-like chimneys, all lend to the feeling of the San Fernando Valley from the perspective of a young-Angeleno with a passion for architecture and design. I grew up in a home similar to this and if you are not from LA, though Byrd and his son, Gary did work in other states, this is a SoCal design story. But, the great part is, you don't need to be from LA to appreciate the Byrds' work. And it's right her in this book from Lukather, to view, peruse, learn about and enjoy. The book is called, Homes By Byrd: The Art & Architecture of Robert Byrd and His Son Gary. Check the show notes for a link to buy. As we explore Elisa Baran's work, follow along here. Thank you, Elisa. I am so happy that we finally met and had the opportunity to talk. Thank you for taking the time to share your story and thank you for the work you're doing. Thank you to my partners and sponsors ThermaSol, Moya Living and Design Hardware for your partnership and support. And, thank you for taking the time out of your day to listen to the show. I hope this allows you to think about things in new ways.  As we put a bow on 2023, there are a few things you should know. I have some really fun, productive and exciting new programming for you in 2024. It includes The Design Messengers, a brand new Monday episode that will cover issues, news, developments and ideas for you to grow your design business. I stopped covering the business of design a few years ago as there was a flood of new podcasts that were covering the business of home and design. That's not what The Design Messengers is, instead of business tips, this is going to be a synopsized, high level view of new concepts, economic developments, technological advancements and other ideas that I think will help you launch into your week. These episodes will drop on select Mondays. Sometimes, every Monday, sometimes not. But, as long as you are subscribing to the podcast, you will receive them automatically in your feed.  I will also be publishing a new series called WestEdge Wednesday. These will feature the conversations that took place live from the WestEdge Design Fair in Santa Monica, California. World-renowned drummer, Joe, who left sticks and skins around, brother Jeff, who picked them up and banged them to new heights, Mike who segued to bass, and Steve who found his passion and his niche with keyboards, programming, and sythns. Separately, and together they made musical history. Sessions and side work for all of them, Bette Midler, Chaka, Earth, Wind & Fire, Quincy Jones, which led to Micheal Jackson and Human Nature on Thriller, thrilling! There was James Newton Howard, playing and scoring for film and TV… Justified. Leaving Toto, rejoining Toto with new appreciation. Drugs, alcohol, and loss took their toll, solo work, Someday/Somehow, collaborations, Allee Willis, writing with his daughters, The Covid Kid, doing what he loves, where he loves. Composer, producer, songwriter, keyboardist, CJ Vanston––great bit on his name to start, had me laughing to tears story upon story. Oh boy, I needed the eggs. From his musical beginnings, locked in and listening to his dad's cool jazz band through the floorboards, burning an oven full of their pot at age 4, the tales kept coming, one topping the next… convincing a young Richard Marx to keep and record what would become his biggest hit, when all he wanted was to sell the thing… working with Prince, sorta, blowing away Barbra… Streisand, that is… and Dolly Pardon, seemingly not impressing Don Henley, CJ making a choice that cost him but ultimately made him, and Don coming back around through Katey Segal… how Russ Kunkel introduced him to Christopher Guest, changing everything, leading to touring with Spinal Tap and scoring his films, touring and recording with Joe Cocker, a story about Ringo worth the price of admission (let's pretend there is one), and absolute gem, likewise the opening for Jeff Beck and saving his ass, literally. We close with a fab story about Jeff Porcaro, and his storied history with Lukather and Toto, too. The time flew. I sit here hours later, still smiling. What a joyful journey. Let’s kick off the weekend with this fly-on-the-wall “Pop Up Podcast” featuring a private filmed, streaming, virtual “ZOOM IN” press conference with Elizabeth Freund, Ringo, Modern Drummer, and a few select friends. Thank you, Beautiful Media and Ringo, for allowing us to post! Today March 19, 2021, Ringo releases his EP titled Zoom In, which features five songs, all of which were recorded at Starr’s home studio between April-October 2020. Starr collaborated with songwriters and producers, and an ever-widening group of musicians playing on the songs, some socially distanced and joining him safely in his studio, always exercising an abundance of caution, and others working on their parts remotely. “It just unfolds,” Ringo said of the recording process, “when I start making a record here in LA at home.” Joining Starr were musicians Nathan East (bass), Steve Lukather (guitar), Bruce Sugar (synth guitar), Benmont Tench (piano), and Jim Cox (string arrangements and synth) Dave Grohl, Ben Harper and Jenny Lewis also joined Starr among others, and all contributed to the first single, Here’s To The Nights. As Ringo recalled, “Diane Warren sent me the song and I loved the sentiment of it. She sent it in a chord I like to call F demented, it was very high, so Benmont Tench transposed it into a key human beings can actually sing - that's how we started with that song. We wanted to add a lot of voices singing on the chorus and so she asked her friends and I asked mine, and not only did we get a lot of people singing on the record, we had a lot of fun, which is how I think it should be, and I got to know a few new friends.” The title track, “Zoom In, Zoom Out,” was penned by Jeff Silbar and features the Doors Robbie Krieger on guitar. “I wanted to call this ‘Zoom In,’ which I think is great for this day and age. For this record, I wanted to get people I hadn't worked with before, so for this track we invited Robby Krieger.” Sam Hollander wrote and produced “Teach Me To Tango,” sending Ringo a nearly completed track onto which Ringo added vocals and, one drum fill. “I called Sam because I had so much fun with him on my last CD. What was great was when I was doing my vocals (Sam lives in New York so I did my part in my home studio here in LA), was there was one part of it and I felt there has got to be a drum fill there! So the credits now read ‘Ringo vocals and 1 drum fill’” (Blair Sinta lays down the drum track) Image Ringo co-wrote “Waiting For The Tide to Turn” with his engineer Bruce Sugar, adding Tony Chen and his extensive reggae roots; “This was something my engineer Bruce Sugar started, but it didn't have a lot of words, so we wrote it together. I did my version of reggae and what was great was we had Tony Chen, who played with Bob Marley and lives here in LA, come over and play on it. He said, ‘hey Mon, that you on drums mon?’ and I said yes, and he said ‘great drums mon, very reggae!’ and my heart swelled! It was so great coming from him!” With four tracks completed, Ringo thought the EP was done. That is until Steve Lukather came over, with his friend and Toto band mate Joseph Williams, as Ringo tells the story: “We had 4 tracks - and then Lukather came over and brought this semi produced track, ‘Not Enough Love In the World’. The sentiment of it - not enough peace in the world, not enough love - I could not not do it - I had to do this track. So I put the vocals on, the drums on, Steve played a bit more guitar, Joe added some harmonies, and it all came together. In addition to making new music during the pandemic, Ringo also completed and released a new limited-edition retrospective hardcover book titled “RINGO ROCKS: 30 YEARS OF THE ALL STARRS 1989-2019.”Proceeds will benefit The Lotus Foundation. Ringo also revealed news about his next All Starr tour with dates in 2022. “They’ll be no touring this year, “as Ringo told fans...

This 'Fry Day' Morning Bull, you read that right, we FRIED people in our own virtual vat of oil to help cool you off for the weekend! The submissions were terrific as always and then we continued the fun with a magic trick! Michael Carbanaro, illusionist from the 'Carbanaro Effect' on TruTV joined us and we asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up! Josh Allen, cigars and blunts all came up in our opening segment—for some reason.  Robs Did You Know took place, as did the TrendZone featuring some great sound from around the world! As we are doing every Friday during Lent, today was 'FRY DAY' on Morning Bull and 97 Rock and we had some incredible submissions to get us kicked off. Bull even got thrown in by a listener, thats how crazy we got today! We picked a winner and you heard from her, first hand about her “crappy” story! Steve Lukather is the guitarist from legendary classic rock band Toto! He called the show the other day and we talked forever. In the conversation, he mentioned that he looked up to George Harrison at the ripe age of 9 and knew right then and there that he wanted to be a guitarist, if not Harrison himself! He also mentions some really cool back stage tales and name drops that we were blown away by! Off of Lukather's call, we got onto the topic of: what we/you wanted to be when we grew up? This was a great text in topic and we had plenty of solicitations of great people and careers we all wanted to be when we were little. Some of the submissions included famous athletes, celebrities, musicians and more. Chris and Rob had really funny ones and Bull...well just listen to the sadness—and the fun! Illusionist/magician Michael Carbanaro from his own show on TruTV gave us a ring and told us some cool behind the scenes stories of being a magician and having his own show dedicated to it. He also obliged Rob and commiserated about being in the world of illusion and magic. Hes a great guy and has a cool virtual show happening tonight and tomorrow! Many of us know that Rob dabbled in magic and illusion throughout his early life and career, along with being a comedian. Today, he displayed a ZOOM trick for us and you to experience with a small deck of cards and two subjects. Check out the video and see if you can figure out how he did it! Today I introduce you to the vocal legend Joseph Williams, who was and is again the main frontman of one of the biggest US rock bands of the last 40 years: We're talking about TOTO. We know hits like “Stop Loving You” or “Pamela” or of course “I'll Be Over You” out of his mouth - and since the reunion in 2010 he has also enchanted lots of other band classics with his buttery soft voice. After an intense last world tour, TOTO was planned to call it finally quits. The Classic Lineup had been reduced further and further due to health restrictions and tragedies. But his bandmate Steve Lukather, whom we will hear in the next episode, and Joseph just wanted to add another round, and they both have set up a new, completely renewed TOTO band that wants to march off right after the end of this pandemic. In the meantime, Williams and guitarist Lukather have both worked on solo records and have also contributed to each other's album. Two records that pick up the essence of the TOTO sound, but couldn't be more different. While Luke's album was recorded live and roughly with musician friends including Ringo Starr, Joe takes us on a perfect sound journey full of warm vocal harmonies and opens our ears to a great widescreen sound in Cinemascope. The apple didn't fall far from the tree here, as he is the son of the legendary film music composer John Williams, to whom we owe the music of Star Wars and Harry Potter as well as the soundtracks of Steven Spielberg's greatest films, among other things. I'm sure you got these melodies right away. On the other hand, Joseph also included his two grown daughters on this album called “Denizen Tenant”. Die album is available also here: https://amzn.to/2NCwPG8I caught Joseph Williams at his workplace in the home studio and wish you a entertaining time while listening to our conversation.THE BLOG OF ROCK is your hard rock & heavy metal podcast music magazine. Steve Lukather aka “Luke” and Joseph Williams will release individual solo albums on February 26, 2021 via The Players Club / Mascot Label Group. Both artists have made significant contributions to the other's album. Earlier this year, the label presented “Run To Me” from Luke's forthcoming release I Found The Sun Again, which can be screened here: https://youtu.be/mvbHYmh7VYY. Today, the first reveal from Williams' album titled Denizen Tenant has hit streaming platforms globally. To hear the song, and view the video produced by the artist himself for “Never Saw You Coming” click here: https://youtu.be/FTJ5KHcnWiM Williams shares, “'Never Saw You Coming' is my first opportunity in ages to show my true sound.  Although my album is an eclectic collection of songs, this one tells you what you need to know to get a real sense of the whole. You can see where I'm going vocally for sure. It all starts with ‘Never Saw You Coming,' plus I thought it was time we had a cool sexy song about death! Enjoy…” Steve Lukather's solo album titled I Found The Sun Again was co-produced by Ken Freeman, who also both engineered and mixed the new collection of repertoire. The players feature many dignitaries that have been in Luke's life for decades. Amongst those are drummer Greg Bissonette, keyboardist Jeff Babko, and bassists Jorgen Carlsson and John Pierce. Life-long friend and Toto band-mate David Paich performs piano and organ across the album, while Joseph Williams sang on multiple tracks alongside writing string and horn arrangements and tracking keys on the aforementioned “Run To Me.” Both Paich and Williams co-wrote that specific composition, while friend and band leader of the All-Starrs, Ringo Starr makes a special appearance on the recording and in the video. Other co-writers include Stan Lynch, Jeff Babko, and of course Joseph Williams. Luke shares, “Never had so much fun recording in my life. Painless, fun and easy - and it just flowed.” The repertoire features five new original compositions, and three covers personally selected by Luke. Those are Traffic's “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys,” Joe Walsh's “Welcome To The Club,” and Robin Trower's “Bridge of Sighs.” Lukather offers in the liner notes, “ALL these tracks were cut LIVE - no clix - no fix - No rehearsal - one run thru - and record and the whole record was take 2. I did double a few guitar parts and ‘produced up' a few tunes that are obvious but in the same time frame. I recorded the lead vocal right after we got the take same day. One song a day. Joe took it home and did some BG vocals but that's it. I wanted to make as honest a record as I could in 2020 with 1970's inspiration, and recording values, and techniques with a modern sound. Ken did that!” A portion of the proceeds from this album will be directed to The Ed Asner Family Center for Autism. For more information please visit https://www.edasnerfamilycenter.org/.

Met teksten als ‘It lost us a fortune man, the bitch won’t stop!’ en ‘She just wants me dead, it’s very clear’ blijft niets onbesproken.

We discuss Toto's legacy and chat with founder Steve Lukather On The Music Universe's inaugural podcast episode, hosts Matt Bailey and Buddy Iahn discuss the legacy of iconic rock band Toto. Plus, Matt chats with founding member Steve Lukather. Lukather is the only member of Toto to have toured consistently with the group since its inception. What started out as an interview for a promotional article for the final leg of Toto's 40 Tours Around the Sun, turned into a freewheeling conversation perfect for a podcast. In this conversation, Luke -- as they call him -- is candid about his time with the band, his shoulder injury, and even the trials of becoming Toto's manager. While the band still has a team, Luke says, everything is done in-house. When a band has been around for over four decades like Toto, they certainly have earned that kind of creative control. Luke also discusses going from wild party animal to the quiet life of gratitude he lives now. Speaking candidly, Luke reveals that a lawsuit has forced the group to restrategize, and that you may not see them on the road for some time after this tour wraps. While he does not go into detail about the lawsuit, he is open about the toll it took on the band, and how they are coping with a verdict not exactly in their favor. Meanwhile, Matt and Buddy tackle Toto's legacy. Once the red-headed stepchild to Punk's emergence in the 70's and 80's. But Matt and Buddy think history will be kind to Toto's skillful musicianship and their sweeping production numbers. “Africa” alone has surpassed its initial reception to become one of the best-loved classic rock ballads of all time. We have more details surrounding the final leg of Toto's 40 Tours Around the Sun. There are dates in the Midwest and East Coast through October 20th. If a show in your area is not sold out, get tickets before there are not any left. This may well be your last chance to see Toto as it exists in its current form. Check out our other Podcasts. In it we examine his note choice, techniques and approach to the guitar. This lesson is being released as one whole lesson as we felt that it fitted together better this way. It begins with Dan's improvisation over the YouTube backing track, which we found to use as the basis for this lesson (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1xhSg-_oa8). The lesson then starts proper with a background discussion of Lukather's playing and session work. Next Dan breaks down some of the techniques and ideas which he employed in his imrovisation. Finally, it ends with a jam in which we both take it in turns to improvise over the backing track.

Edward DeGenaro is a fusion guitarist whose “Nude Guitars” sound—a unique mix of bebop and metal stylings mixed with a whole lot of the DeGenaro personality—has been compared to the works of Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, and Steve Vai. DeGenaro's journey in music began in Germany, where he was born and raised. He studied cello at an early age, but quickly picked up the guitar as his instrument of choice for venting his artistic expression. After receiving a degree in Performance and Teaching from the German National Conservatory of Music in Nuremberg, he worked as a session player throughout Europe before relocating to Los Angeles, and, finally to Seattle, where he currently resides.DeGenaro performs at various venues, such as the NYC Fretless Guitar Festival and the NAMM show, and has worked (as a musician and/or recording engineer) with Elliott Sharp, Steve Kimock, Henry Kaiser, David Byron Band, Accept, Hammerhead, Alcatraz, David Rosenthal, and Roy Thomas Baker. He has also contributed to various feature films and television commercials, and recently finished recording all the audio samples for Jack Zucker's Sheets Of Sound, Vol. II. He is also working on his soon-to-be-released CD, Dog House.

Joe Cefalu was born in quiet suburbia on Long Island, New York. When he was 11, however, his family moved to the mean streets of Brooklyn, and into an apartment above a nightclub owned and operated by the mob. Cefalu witnessed many strange and interesting sights from his second story bedroom window—such as bar fights that spilled onto the sidewalk, brazen gun play, and random beatings. One night, his older sister and mother were accidentally dragged into a street brawl while returning home, and Cefalu awoke to find his father hanging out the front window with a 12-gauge shotgun threatening to “send them all to hell,” if the punks didn't lay off his wife and daughter. Needless to say, the terrified pre-teen became a shut-in, passing endless days locked in his bedroom listening to music, reading science fiction, and, eventually, teaching himself to play guitar. His guitar heroes were David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Jimmy Page, Neal Schon, and Alex Lifeson.Cefalu spent his formative years practicing, playing gigs, and hanging around New York City recording studios. After recording a few tunes while in his early 20s, Cefalu was featured in Guitar Player's Spotlight Column. He has also appeared in Guitar FTPM and Guitar Shop, and was included on a Guitar World compilation CD.As a guitar instructor, Cefalu averages about 40 students per week, and has been tapped by various guitar publications to evaluate and review music gear, write guitar transcriptions, do interviews, and pen instructional columns. Cefalu currently lives in the beautiful city of Boise, Idaho, with his wife and two young sons. He feels extremely grateful to be able to earn his living with a guitar in his hands.

In 1998, Karickhoff picked up his first guitar, and immediately had the desire to tear it up with monster shredding, amazing solos, and unheard-of techniques. He asked the names of the best guitarists in the world, and began to study players such as Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteem, and Jeff Beck.In 1999, at just eight years old, he began taking lessons. It didn't go well. After one month, the instructor stated that Karickhoff didn't have what it took to be a guitarist. Undaunted, he started lessons again a few months later with Preston Lindey. Although Lindey taught children, he was reluctant about working with Karickhoff because he never had a student that young. However, he agreed to give Karickhoff a shot if he saw potential. Seven years later, Karickhoff and Lindey are still working together. In 2004, Karickhoff won the store championships of the Guitar Center Guitarmageddon contest, beating out 30 competitors. The day before the GH06 competition, Karickhoff and his band were opening for Bad Company in Buffalo, New York. And tonight, he is playing in front of a major influence—Joe Satriani. This will most definitely be the highlight of his young career.

Sergei Roudzinski was born in Leningrad, USSR, in January 1964. He first picked up guitar at the age of four, but really got interested when he was 16—practicing for up to 20 hours a day on his timing and picking technique. There were no method books or teachers to learn from—just a handful of enthusiasts who “discovered” certain things and shared their knowledge with friends. In 1992, Roudzinski played with one of Russia's national acts—Vladimir Rekshan's St. Petersburg—and recorded a CD with the group. Later, he started his successful band Amok, which opened for Russian national acts such as Time Machine, opened for Brian May's solo band, and won first place at the Nevskoe Rondo Music Festival in 1993. In 1995, Roudzinski became one of the five finalists in a St. Petersburg guitar competition, and his “Spanish Theme” instrumental received radio play on several local stations.Roudzinski's influences include Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Vai, John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, and Paco de Lucia. He has been writing music for more than 20 years, and completed his first solo album, Transformations, earlier this year.

Nathan Hahn began playing guitar at age 13, trying to sound like the rock bands he heard on the radio. His parents bought him his first electric guitar for his 14th birthday, and he spent a good deal of the next few years learning various alternative rock songs by ear. A teacher at a local music store introduced him to lead-guitar playing, and although he stopped taking lessons after a few months, he had already gleaned the valuable basics of scales and improvisation. Hahn noodled around for a few years while developing some basic technique, and he played lead guitar in a band with some friends in high school. After graduation, Hahn's guitar playing was taken to the next level when he joined Guitar War—a music competition Web site (now called Musician War). There, Hahn had the chance to compete and converse with dozens of skilled guitarists who exposed him to many new techniques, artists, and styles. The interaction motivated Hahn to practice more to improve his rather limited skills, and he soon found himself playing up to three hours a day. After participating at Guitar War for less than a year, his efforts culminated in a “Pro War” championship—the most prestigious honor on the site. Hahn's favorite guitarist is Andy Timmons—a fellow Texan whom he admires for his expressiveness, attitude, and incredible skill. Though he still composes occasionally, Hahn has less and less time to play guitar as he progresses through the chemical engineering program at the University of Houston.
