Take a look, there is no book. Because this isn't the Reading Rainbow. This is Popcorn Pulse and we do movies. So how about a movie that was written by the same guy who did LA Confidential? You might remember it as the movie which got a lot of buzz back in the nineties. Going so far as to get Oscar noms. You can imagine a writer might try to get lightning to strike twice after that. Because everybody wants both Hollywood money and acclaim. We bring you Street Kings[2008]. It stars Keanu as a cop who drinks and is depressed. He had a falling out with his partner, played … Continue reading "Popcorn Pulse 230: 44 Kings"

Shane brings us another Whitaker watchable, this time from Mr. Suicide Squad himself: David Ayer. Keanu plays a character we haven't seen much from him in the past, as does Forest. This is the weirdest kind of copaganda. Keanu gets S.W.A.Y.Z.E. Methoded. Shane fixes The Lake House. This movie is probably more enjoyable than we wanted to give it credit for.

It was about a 45 minute drive for us, being from Fort Worth, but it was a nice day for a Car Show. This by know means was just any Car Show. Yes, you would be right it was the Famous Tacos n Tires put on Richard Rawlings at Gas Monkey Garage. We showed up I would say about 9:30 or a little after. The Cars were already parked out front and set up, it was starting to get really crowded out there. I had the Podcast Mic rolling as I walked around incase I got to do any interviews. We did, ran into a few friends out there, we got to catch up with Dwayne  Phibbs who works for Richard now, if you remember in the early days Gas Monkey Garage they started out in a little shop right on Reeder Rd. That shop were they filmed the early episodes from was owned by Dwayne and his Father. There is also another shop on that street famous,  the Monkeys would get all their interior work done on the cars they built for the show, Sue Martin of ASM Upholstery was seen on the show as well. How can I forget my friend Steve Mabry from The Rusty Buffalo Company this guy is so amazing with the designing as well as his craftsmanship and his attention to detail on his products that he creates. We also saw and spoke with Tony Taylor from Gas Monkey Garage.

Have you ever spotted those paperback novels, with photos of a really attractive man with chiseled abs, or a stunning woman with beautiful, lush flowing hair and eyes to kill. If you ever took a peek inside, you would know that those romance novels offer way more than just romance. They are seductive, alluring, mysterious and thrilling.In this episode, you will hear from USA Today bestselling author Sienna Snow.  Author of romance novels, Snow published her first book after 40.  That her background is South Asian and that she includes South Asian characters in a racy genre of novels where we are supremely underrepresented is just one of the many fascinating things about her.Sienna's latest series - Street Kings - saw it's first release just last month, Dangerous Kings. Available where books are sold, this book will make for the perfect vacation read. Johnny (Attack of the B Movies Podcast), Robb (The Cinema Drunkie) and I elaborate on various cult and heavily flawed Horror franchises that should’ve turned out WAY better than what they unfortunately became. We discuss everything from Wrong Turn, Hatchet and Wishmaster to Alien, Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th. Did you know that Candyman Vs. Wishmaster was an actual thing discussed? What original Aliens sequels would’ve been far superior before the Predator and Ridley Scott started invading its “space”?? Did you know that David Ayer (Training Day, Street Kings) wanted to do a creepy Star Wars movie revolving around the creatures on Hoth??? What about that damn Soultaker reboot no one asked for that is curiously tempting to recreate???? Despite some occasional SciFi and comic book crossovers invading the conversation, we get into some serious cult and underrated franchise picks here for the most part while staying away from the arguably trashy and campy ones.  #JackedUpReviewShow #Podcast #Alien #Aliens #Alien3 #HorrorFranchises #WhatIf #Wishmaster #WesCraven #Djinn #Warlock #NightmareOnElmStreet #FridayThe13th #EvilDead #Ash #BruceCampbell #ManiacCop #WrongTurn #Freddy #Jason #JasonX #Fantasy #SciFi #StarWars #AVP #AlienVsPredator #Predator #Predators #Predator2 #ThePredator #Terror #Cult #Awesome #Underground #Fun #Stellar #Movies #TVShows #FinalDestination #NewLineCinema #Lionsgate #Vestron #ChildsPlay #Warlock #Candyman #JulianSands #TonyTodd #RobertKnepper #KaneHodder #AndrewDivoff #Corona #COVID19 #Virus #Fox #Universal #WarnerBros #Sequels #Prequels #BodyBags #BadMovies #SoBadTheyreGood #TheHitcher #Hellraiser #DougBradley #Halloween #MichaelMyers #TexasChainsawMassacre #Cannibal #Gore #Campy #Outrageous #LateNightMovies #BingeWatch #Series #Ongoing #ChildrenOfTheCorn #Franchises #CultFilms #StephenKing #Epic #Meh #Bad #DaniellaAlonso #TiffanyShepis #TalesFromTheHood #JamieBernadette #ScreamQueens #Explosions #Hysterical #Hammy #Dumb #Stupid #HenryRollins #HillsHaveEyes #Chucky #Waxwork #TimberFalls #WrongTurn3 #RestStop #EdenLake #BloodCreek #JoelSchumacher #CultFilmmakers #AlienResurrection #DavidFincher #Holocaust #Demons #Possession #Poltergeist #Djinn #Egyptian #StopMotion #TheThing #NeillBlomkamp #District9 #Elysium #Chappie #VFX #VisualEffects #PrisonPlanet #SFX #SpecialEffects #Gothic #PeterAtkins #RogerChristian #GeorgeLucas #Cyberpunk #SciFi #Fantasy #AliensColonialMarines #AliensIsolation #Terminator #BladeRunner #Prometheus #AlienCovenant #Babylon5 #StarTrek #OldSchool #Grindhouse #Slashers #Maniac1980 #WilliamLustig #Unrated #Uncut #Rrated #Movies #TVShows #HardcoreViolence #Gore #Saw #TorturePorn #FridayThe13 #Slaughter #ManiacCop #VictorCrowley #RobertEnglund #ObiWan #JeffreyCombs #TomSavini #Swordfight #Highlander #QuakeVideogame #Cube #Folklore #TheMonkeysPaw #TheSimpsons #Vs #FunMovies #CarefulWhatYouWishFor #CoronaVirus #SyFyChannel #SciFiChannel #Gruesome #GoryViolence #Leprechaun #Sharknado #VersusMovies #BuddyPictures #HorrorFest #Circus #Freaks #WesCraven #MagnetReleasing #Fighting #Shudder #Action #DarkFantasy #SamRaimi #HorrorSciFi #HorrorFantasy #DragMeToHell #MovieCareers #AshVsEvilDead #Marvel #DCComics #Disney #TheMandalorian #Heroine #VincentPrice #TwistEnding #TheCryingGame #LGBTQ #UnprofessionalFilmmakers #Leatherface #Sequels #Remakes #Reboots #Teens #VOD #VideoOnDemand #DimensionFilms #AMCNetworks #TalesFromTheCrypt #JoeEstevez #Soultaker #CharlieSheen #Scandals #DemonicCult #MartinSheen #GoodIdeas #BadIdeas #Egos #Scandals #MST3k #Werewolf #MysteryScienceTheater3000 #Boring #Dull #VHS #ShotOnVideo #TimAndEric #AdultSwim #AttackOfTheBMovies #CinemaDrunkie #HouseThatScreamsPodcast #Skype #ZoomMeetings

Optimize Yourself

No matter the rung of the ladder you happen to be on in the entertainment industry, making it in Hollywood is no easy feat. And with how our world is evolving post-pandemic, you might think it will be nearly impossible to maintain any sort of work-life balance for our foreseeable future, especially if you’re fortunate enough to reach the top rung of the ladder like today’s guest. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to not only survive but thrive while working on giant tent pole films like The Avengers series, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3, or a multitude of other blockbusters, then this conversation is going to give you the inside look you’ve been waiting for. Award-winning editor Jeffrey Ford, ACE has made his career working with big name directors like Michael Mann, Joss Whedon, Anthony & Joe Russo, and Joe Johnston, and he does not sugar coat the reality that editing these films is an all-consuming endeavor. In today’s interview with Jeffrey (which was originally recorded a few years ago back in the ‘Fitness In Post’ days), he does share with us his secrets and routines for maintaining his health and family life without succumbing to bad habits and burnout. We dive deep into the methods he uses to stay energetic and creative despite the long hours, specifically maintaining consistent movement throughout his workday. He also talks about the immense importance of keeping his team rested and refreshed so they too can be productive and creative while still meeting the demanding and intense work schedules on huge tentpole films. While the conversation might not be brand new, the topics we discuss are as relevant as ever. If setting boundaries and maintaining some semblance of sanity in our post-pandemic world is a priority for you, after listening I highly recommend following up this episode with my interview with producer Janace Tashjian where we discuss the importance of setting boundaries, advocating for yourself, and asking for help. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: The story of how Jeff began his film career after graduating from USC film school and getting his first job as an apprentice editor with director James Gray and editor Dorian Harris What film school taught him about teamwork and making connections with people in the industry. The struggles he endured through years of unemployment, only working 5 days a month while making films on his own to hone his craft. His humility still leaves him surprised and enthused that people continue to let him cut their films. The extreme focus necessary to edit the film, Public Enemies with Michael Mann, and the demanding schedule and hours he endured. Jeff believes that the longer you sit in front of your screen without moving, the more it inhibits your objectivity and relationship with your audience. Why he makes time for 3 to 4 movement breaks throughout the day. The reason his standing desk has been an enormous benefit to his creativity and mental fortitude. The scheduling fix they use on the Marvel movies to avoid burnout and ensure everyone stays healthy and happy. The importance of having a work environment that provides daylight, space, and amenities to maintain health and well being. Self-assertion and setting boundaries must be built into your routine due to the competitive and intense nature of the business. On Jeff’s team, taking care of yourself is looked upon as a strength rather than a weakness. KEY TAKE AWAY #1: Keep perspective about the job by understanding that your family is your most important support system to keep you going. KEY TAKE AWAY #2: Staying in shape physically is directly connected to your mental well being which is connected to your success. KEY TAKE AWAY #3: Divide the workload between more people working shorter hours to stay creative and productive. Marcus Irving (@marcusirving317) stops by our all Keanu podcast once again to join Sam (@samshotfirst) for a discussion on Street Kings, the very not good police action-thriller that fails on pretty much every level despite best efforts from Reeves, Forest Whitaker and others in the stellar cast.

Bright is a movie that is full of ideas and potential but ends up falling very short due to horrible writing. The movie tries to be everything and can't seem to focus on what it wants to be. Taking all the cues from films like Street Kings, 48 Hours, Alien Nation, Appleseed, Training Day, etc...You name it and this movie tries to be like it. Ultimately Will Smith's charm couldn't save this movie. 3BG rating: 2 out of 5

Sunny Giovanni -In southern Dallas, Texas, Sunny Giovanni-- or "Gio" as she likes to be called--Born to a mother who was a teacher and a graduate from Texas A&M University you couldn't so much as watch a Disney movie if you hadn't read the book beforehand. Gio has had a very strong history with literature, diversifying from poetry (winning placements in oratorical contests), to thriller short stories as a way to vent her frustrations. The pen was handed down to her from an older sibling as a means to focus her negative energy and anger into something different but was used as a way to alter her own situations. As a preteen Gio witnessed how much her writing could touch someone when she left one of her prized spirals in a classroom without knowing. Two weeks after it went missing someone brought it back to her asking for more, letting the young author know that almost everyone she knew read the story, but without knowing it was her in the story she had written. Sunny Giovanni is an advocate for gay and transgender rights, and says: "You can't help who you are and you damn sure can't help who you love. You should be true to who are rather than to conform and live the ultimate lie and live miserably until the day you die." Credited from the poem she penned "Titanium", modeled after her novel. Gio is a mother of three children, the founder of Lucid Legends Publishing/ Photography, Kno Joke Entertainment, the host of "We Talk TOO Much Radio" on BlogTalk Radio and blogs on Tumblr under the name "KnoJokeGio".  At the age of twenty-four someone made the decision for Gio to "stop playing around and start publishing" her own works. The father of her children promised that he would handle everything else if only she would pick up the pen after many down moments and discouragement from major companies who sighted the young author.

Calf (Soft Skull Press)                  Mighty, Mighty (Soft Skull Press)Join us tonight for a fantastic evening from one of our favorite publishers Soft Skull Press! The year was 1981. The US was entering a deep recession, Russia was our enemy, and John Hinckley, Jr.'s assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan shocked the nation. It was also the year author Andrea Kleine learned her close childhood friend had been violently murdered by her socialite mother, Leslie DeVeau. Both events took place in Washington, DC. Hinckley and Deveau were both sent to St. Elizabeth's hospital, guilty by reason of insanity. It was there that they met, and later became lovers. These two real-life, and ultimately converging events inspired Klein's jaw-dropping, spine-tingling novel, CALF. Made up of dual narratives and told over the course of one year, Kleine's account follows a fictionalized John Hinkley in the lead-up to the assassination attempt, and Tammy, older sister to Steffi, the best friend of DeVeau's daughter, Kirin. Part Are You There God, It's Me Margaret and part Taxi Driver, this creepy, unsettling, and absolutely addictive novel shines a light on two terrible events, providing an unflinching depiction of violence, both intimate and sensational.Praise for Calf"In 1981, John Hinckley, Jr.'s attempt to assassinate Ronald Reagan rocked the nation. And Andrea Kleine's gripping novel,Calf will rock readers. This is a wonderfully unsettling book about love, loss, and unlikely connections." -- Elliott Holt, author of You Are One of ThemWally Rudolph's Mighty, Mighty is a modern day fable set in a crumbling metropolis riddled with urban poverty and violence.Dirty apartments, tattoo parlors, food kitchens - these are the markers of home for the struggling young adults around Chicago. Stefy is an artist at Ghost Town, the local tattoo shop, trying to provide for her younger sister Amanda and their ailing grandfather. Amanda is hoping for something better, seeking to escape a past riddled with addiction and an abusive relationship with Georgie. When he confronts her one drunken night at a dive bar, the situation turns violent: Amanda barely escapes with her life but Georgie lies dead on the bathroom floor. This one mistake puts the two sisters in the crosshairs of Georgie's father, a twisted, corrupt ex-cop now out for revenge over the murder of his son. His quest for vengeance will make the neighborhoods of Chicago tremble, leaving no one untouched. Mighty, Mighty is a harsh and realistic look at the struggle of two families desperately trying to get out from under the heavy boot of violence and poverty. Like the works of Richard Price and Dennis Lehane, the novel is a startling and accurate portrait of contemporary urban life.Andrea Kleine is a writer and performance artist whose work has spanned dance, theater, film, literature, and interdisciplinary projects. She has received five MacDowell Colony fellowships and the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship award. Her writing has been published in The Los Angeles Review of Books, Everyday Genius, NYFA Current, and on her blog, The Dancers Will Win. Calf is her first novel.Wally Rudolph is the author of the novels Mighty, Mighty (2015) and Four Corners (2014). His fiction has been published in Milk Money, Lines+Stars, The Brooklyner, and others. A graduate of The Second City Conservatory in Chicago, he now resides with his family in Los Angeles. Four Corners (Soft Skull Press) Writing under the pen name of Wally Rudolph, writer/actor Walter Wong (best known for his role as Chris 'V-Lin' Von Lin on Sons of Anarchy) drops readers into the bare-knuckled world of Frank Bruce, a 37-year-old meth addict tangled up crime, drugs, and his far-too-young fiancé, Maddie. Struggling to be a decent man and leave his toxic life behind, Frank's attempt to save his best friend's son from the child's violent grandfather turns into nightmare of drugs, kidnapping, and corruption. Set in the striking southwestern landscape of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona, Wally creates a cast of unfortunate, marginalized characters and tells their story with dignity, compassion, and in their own unflinching words.   PRAISE FOR FOUR CORNERS "Wally Rudolph's meth-and-cocaine-addled protagonists reel through a nonstop catastrophe of violence, flight, and revenge, too self-destructive to have anything more than a prayer--but they are real. They suffer and love and worship, however crazily. The action is urgent and compelling, the details are as crisp as the light that falls on Santa Fe. Wally knows the territory. And the territory is the human heart." --Jack Butler, Pulitzer Prize Nominee for Living in Little Rock with Miss Little Rock "Four Corners is a book that will stay with me for a long time, an outstanding first novel by a writer unafraid to scrape the crud off the floor of the human psyche. The best kind of crime fiction." --Scott Phillips, author of The Ice Harvest and Hop Alley Born in Canada to Jamaican immigrant parents, Wally Rudolph smoked marijuana for the first time at the age of fourteen, beginning a fifteen-year affair with illicit drugs that had him drop out of college and took him back and fourth across the American Midwest. His fiction has been published in Milk Money, Lines+Stars, The Brooklyner, and others. A graduate of The Second City Conservatory in Chicago, he now resides with his family  in Los Angeles. As an actor, he has appeared in numerous films and TV shows including "Street Kings," "Bang Bang," and "Sons of Anarchy."

Naomie Harris (Jane), as well as working on big budget Hollywood Movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, continues to choose challenging and exciting roles in smaller and more diverse films such as THE FIRST GRADER. She and I had a great interview last week when her tour brought her to the San Francisco Bay Area for a preview screeening of her latest film at Landmark Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. London-born Naomie graduated with honours from Cambridge University in 1998 with a degree in social and political science. She went on to train at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and had her first major acting breakthrough in 2002 with Danny Boyle's zombie horror film 28 Days Later. She went on to receive further international recognition and critical acclaim in her role as Tia Dalma in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. Other major feature film credits include Michael Mann's Miami Vice, Michael Winterbottom's A Cock and Bull Story, and Street Kings with Keanu Reeves and Forrest Whittaker. Most recent feature film projects include: Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll with Andy Serkis; Ninja Assassin directed by James McTeigue; Julian Kemp's My Last Five Girlfriends: and, THE FIRST GRADER, written by Ann Peacock and directed by Justin Chadwick. Major television drama credits have included: Julian Jarrold's White Teeth, based on Zadie Smith's best-selling novel; Peter Kosminsky's The Project; Poppy Shakespeare, Blood and Oil and Small Island for the BBC.We close with the complete interview with Alrick Brown, director of the wonderful film Kinyarwanda, which had a successful screening at the 54th edition of the SFIFF.The film tells a seldom heard story of the Muslim community in Rwanda during the horrific100 days. They made the mosques sacred safe havens for those persecuted.

Rock N' Reel

Play Episode Listen Later May 29, 2008

Ah yes, time for yet another episode of Rock and Reel. Despite some heavy-ish themes this week in the films and album we discuss, I'd call this our funniest episode yet. And this isn't by any means a stand-up comedy podcast. My guess is that Kevin and I were particularly punchy (i.e. drunk) when we recorded this, and as such there's a certain candidness that crosses a line or two throughout this episode. Here's what we cover:"Street Kings" may not be in very many first-run theatres currently, but it was when we recorded this a few weeks back, and with any luck you'll be able to find it in second-run theatres or on DVD in the next few months. If you're one of the people who has yet to see it, make sure you check out our review of the film as a means of attempting to discover if this film might be for you. Also, if you HAVE seen the movie, maybe give a listen and find out if you agree with our extra-long assessment of the film, which stars Keanu Reeves and Forrest Whittaker, among others. Our Album of the Week is from the band Foals and their debut record "Antidotes." It has some danceable qualities to it, along with a little bit of math rock stylings. If you don't know what "math rock" is, fear not for we attempt to define it during our review. Also, the song "Balloons" is contained in this segment, and at the very least I suggest you give that a listen and see if it's your cup of tea.We close things out with a new segment, simply titled "Pre-View Review," where we do the impossible and judge a book by its cover, or rather a film by its trailer. With the summer blockbuster season already in full gear, we tackle the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan film "The Happening" starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel. Did we like this entire film based upon the 2 minutes of carefully edited footage the studio put together for us? The fun part is that after the film gets released we'll follow up and give a legitimate review just to see how accurate we were in the end. The segment is a lot of fun, and I guarantee there will be more "Pre-View Reviews" in upcoming shows.Next episode is our comedy-themed show, with our reviews of the Judd Apatow-produced laugh-fest known as "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and the album by New Zealand's 4th most popular folk parody duo Flight of the Conchords. We'll also debut yet another new segment, appropriately titled "Please Kill Me Now," where we watch a really bad movie and then describe ways in which we'd rather be killed than watch it again.
