Le pays s'apprête à adopter la monnaie européenne, mais il est miné par l'instabilité politique et une corruption endémique aux multiples formes. Parmi les pratiques qui se répandent, l'appropriation d'entreprises est en plein essor. Exemple à Sunny Beach, au cœur du tourisme balnéaire bulgare.  L'hôtel Paradise Beach est le symbole d'une autre époque : des centaines de chambres sur plusieurs étages, plusieurs restaurants, bars et boîtes de nuit, sans oublier la tour sur la plage. Il fait partie du parc immobilier de Venelin Tachev, qui est propriétaire de cinq hôtels pour une capacité totale de 3 000 lits. C'est après avoir revendu un terrain à son voisin que les ennuis commencent. Après avoir déposé une demande auprès de la mairie pour mieux délimiter sa propriété, Venelin Tashev et ses clients sont harcelés. « Ils ont commencé à mettre de la musique à fond entre minuit et six heures du matin. Et de la musique horrible. Avec mes clients, on a dû appeler les autorités des milliers de fois. Sans aucune conséquence pour ce voisin. Les institutions ne font rien, ni la police, ni le parquet », relate le propriétaire de l'hôtel.   Ce voisin n'est pas n'importe qui, c'est un mafieux suspecté de trafic de drogue. Le terrain racheté a été transformé en villa luxueuse avec un restaurant qui accueille des invités d'honneur. « Je n'ai jamais voulu de conflit avec cette personne, parce que je vois bien qui lui rend visite, poursuit Venelin Tashev. Des personnes très haut placées dans le pays, des personnalités connues, des politiques... Je ne veux pas donner de nom. Tout ça pour qu'on s'approprie mon business, pour mettre la main sur l'hôtel. C'est un des meilleurs hôtels de Sunny Beach. C'est un hôtel cinq étoiles, sur la plage. » « Je m'inquiète [...] des proportions que la corruption va atteindre si on ne fait rien » Le mercredi 10 décembre, à Sofia, 150 000 personnes étaient mobilisées pour protester contre la corruption. Le récit de Venelin Tachev est loin d'être un cas isolé. C'est même devenu chose courante, en Bulgarie. C'est également une des raisons pour lesquelles Yoanna, la vingtaine, est venue protester : « Je m'inquiète surtout de l'avenir et des proportions que la corruption va atteindre si on ne fait rien. Combien de fois des proches de mes parents m'ont raconté comment des responsables politiques faisaient pression sur eux. C'est vraiment démotivant. »  Le budget 2026 a remis de l'huile sur le feu d'un paysage politique déjà tendu. Dimitar, la quarantaine, travaille dans la finance. Pour lui, une chose est évidente : quelqu'un veut se remplir les poches sur le dos du contribuable.  « La raison pour laquelle je suis ici, c'est la corruption et le budget. Il est évident qu'il a été conçu pour que Boïko Borissov, Delyan Peevski et leur clique continuent à s'approprier des millions, voire des milliards. Le fait qu'ils contrôlent tout le système judiciaire en appliquant le principe de la carotte et du bâton, c'est inacceptable. Et c'est pour cela qu'on veut leur démission », assène-t-il.  Finalement, les manifestants ont obtenu gain de cause : le gouvernement de Rossen Jéliazkov, en fait contrôlé par Borissov et Peevski, a démissionné. Combien de fois des proches de mes parents m'ont raconté comment des responsables politiques faisaient pression sur eux. C'est vraiment démotivant. »  Le budget 2026 a remis de l'huile sur le feu d'un paysage politique déjà tendu. Dimitar, la quarantaine, travaille dans la finance. Pour lui, une chose est évidente : quelqu'un veut se remplir les poches sur le dos du contribuable.  « La raison pour laquelle je suis ici, c'est la corruption et le budget. Il est évident qu'il a été conçu pour que Boïko Borissov, Delyan Peevski et leur clique continuent à s'approprier des millions, voire des milliards. Le fait qu'ils contrôlent tout le système judiciaire en appliquant le principe de la carotte et du bâton, c'est inacceptable. Et c'est pour cela qu'on veut leur démission », assène-t-il.  Finalement, les manifestants ont obtenu gain de cause : le gouvernement de Rossen Jéliazkov, en fait contrôlé par Borissov et Peevski, a démissionné.
