Welcome to the show, Tim. Thank you, Steve. I appreciate you having me. It's awesome to have you. So let's start with your journey. How did you get here? I mean, you ran a fitness franchise licensing business, or you still are running it. And now you have also Acote consulting. So tell me about your journey of entrepreneurship. It started very early for me, from my earliest memories, even going back to kind of middle school age. I was always the kid who found problems that he wanted solved and figured out ways to solve them. And I think, as we think about kind of what is entrepreneurism really at its core, a lot of folks would say it's folks with ideas and things like that. I believe an entrepreneur is someone who is able to align having a good idea with the ability to execute or take action on that idea, and the combination of those two meet the timing that is relevant to allow the idea to thrive. You know, so often I think we think of, you know, these grand ideas and really the reality is, I think it's when those three things come together. And just throughout my life, started early, started two companies while I was in college and I learned the lessons of it's have an idea, run it through a screen and then it's what we call speed to money. How quickly can we move from idea to testing? Because that is really what the idea, in my opinion, of what being an entrepreneur really is. Yeah, I love this idea of aligning the idea with the execution. A lot of people think that it's all about ideas. You have a good idea, then you can make a million dollars or a billion dollars, but it's absolutely not so. A lot of times the inventors don't make much money at all, and it's someone who is aligning the idea and get the timing right, aligning it to the execution and get the timing right, that's a very good summation of entrepreneurship. So tell me about, you know, your fitness franchise and then how did you evolve it to consulting, you're now investing in sub-3 million revenue companies. So how did the fitness, this licensing company that you are running, how did that create the opportunity? And also, I think you have a connection with Alex Hormozi as well. So maybe share a little bit about that connection and how that helped you evolve. Sure. So I think when we, a lot of times when I talk to folks and I say, you know, what's your professional journey look like? It's these kind of incremental steps along a similar path. I started washing dishes, then I became a cashier, and then I was a manager, and then I became an owner in a restaurant chain, for example, a very linear path. Mine was a little different. I was always entrepreneurial, always tinkered with things, but I started finance, started in the investment management business and raised a lot of capital and invested a lot of publicly traded companies. So I learned the basics of how to bridge the gap between raising capital and deploying capital. So evaluating companies and valuation and things like that. And I didn't know it at the time, but at that time I was investing in like in US stocks and things like that. But I knew I also liked to be an operator. So I went from investing in publicly traded equities into putting my money where my mouth was, which is building a fitness brand.

When it comes to growing your business, simplicity is key. To make more money, you don't necessarily need to add more products–you just need to make better use of what you already have. Tim Calise is an entrepreneur, investor, consultant, and podcast host who helps service business owners uncover the profits hidden inside their existing businesses. By the age of 25, Tim raised over $325 million for his investment company before moving on to building a 7-figure tech-enabled fitness business with his wife.  Tim was one of the four executive team members at GymLaunch alongside Alex and Leila Hormozi, where he oversaw the development and launch of ALAN, a machine learning SaaS company. Currently, Tim helps make founders' dreams come true by implementing his Product to Profit™ Framework. Transferring Skills from Other Industries Tim is a big believer in what he calls talent stacking–taking his previous experiences and applying them to a new industry or problem. Launching a side business in college helped him develop his pricing and pitching skills. Working in hedge funds gave him the business and finance expertise he needed to open his first gym alongside his wife.  From there, it was an easy jump to working with GymLaunch, where Tim's experience nurturing leads put him in the ideal position to launch the ALAN software. After exiting from ALAN, Tim moved on to a new problem he could solve: helping service businesses create recurring revenue. The Product to Profit™ Framework The goal behind GymLaunch was to help gym owners make more money. One of the main problems that Tim kept running was poor profit margins–or what he called the “pay and pray strategy”. Most gym owners were spending $50+ to acquire a new customer, but the industry standard of free trials meant it took a long time to make that money back. Tim came up with a new model where business owners use paid products and offers to get back their acquisition dollars at the time of purchase. For example, if your customer acquisition cost is $50 then your entry-level offer should be at least $100. The key is to use existing offers (like turning an onboarding program into a paid course) rather than reinventing the wheel. Today Tim uses the same framework to help service-based businesses across dozens of industries generate more revenue and increase their profitability.  Enjoy this episode with entrepreneur Tim Calise… Quotes “The core principle was we were our customer. We saw a problem, we solved it, and within 24 hours we had that business launched.” “So many of us get into business from a delivery perspective. Take fitness, for example–so many personal trainers become gym owners. They're really good at the service, but most of them have no idea how to run a business…I would say ‘What are your gross margins?' to a gym owner and their eyes would glaze over.” “I found peace in being a mentor and a coach, which was unexpected.” “I've moved from me doing the execution to building a community of people who identify with the way I think and my perspective on the world, which is ‘How do we get to where we want to go without selling our souls in the process?'” “When you have concentrations of revenue–either around a single product or customer–that is a risk to an investor.” “We take the best stuff and bring it on the front end, and then we demonstrate or document behind-the-scenes, case studies, things like that, to show you what it's like to be a customer before you pay us a dollar.” “People resonate with confidence, clarity, and insight, and that's what I've spent the last 20 years building and now it's a matter of packaging and putting it in the right place.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit Tim's Website: https://timcalise.com/  Connect with Tim on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tcalise/

As a strategy and execution partner to multiple 8-figure CEOs, and advisor to over 15 privately held businesses with annual revenues from 250,000 to 10 million plus, Tim has made a name for himself in being risk aware and adept at successfully navigating companies and teams through challenging business issues centered around a core value proposition. His well-earned playbook is now a valuable resource to company Owners and Founders.Tim helps companies avoid making six to eight-figure mistakes, solving unpleasant problems with exciting solutions. He focuses on helping companies on the lower end, either those who are just getting started, or who have stalled or feel like something's missing, to grow in their own journey. He explains that mistakes come in two forms. They are the ones that we make knowingly and the ones that we make, unknowingly. He believes these things are kind of acting as brakes to progress and provide clarity, especially in a team. If all of them aren't moving in the same direction, it's going to be really hard to grow. Pull back and retreat to a position of strength, and then build with clarity and continuity.A number of business owners and entrepreneurs start with a kind of belief, to be the singular product that they want to bring to market. In reality, every time we bring something to market, we're actually solving a problem for the buyer. Most of the companies that Tim works with are in the services industry, where he will take a business that is somewhat of a commodity in the market, and get very specific about who they are targeting, talking to, and their value proposition. Looking at other consumables that people may need over time, other opportunities to deliver upon as a full suite of services. It's a misconception if you are providing a service that you have to be the one to actually produce each piece of the product. You can be exceptional in one piece, and then go find partners that will look for joint ventures or partnerships in other areas. The sum of the parts is solving a problem in its totality. It provides operational breathing room, clarity, and focus. There are five core functions of a business, lead generation, lead nurturing, conversion, sales process fulfillment, and then upsell and retention, and they have helped people in all five of those. His company grew quickly from about $400,000 in revenue in 2017 to over 50 million in revenue in just a few short years. That growth came from a mutually beneficial dynamic that was created. The six weeks challenge was priced on average, somewhere in the neighborhood of $600, and the importance of that was because, for the gym owner, it allowed for more efficient lead generation, it improved the short-term cash flow of the business, and therefore allowed the gym owner to reinvest in that relationship to provide a better level of service for the members. Although the price was higher than typical, what it did was, for the first time in the mass market, it hit the three key areas that someone needed to go through a transformation. It was very much success based rather than action based. There was a movement component, there was a nutrition component, and there was an accountability component. That $600 ticket was high, but it was high because it worked and the quality of the experience was very good. The level of success was astronomical, aligning all the pieces.Focus on opportunities to deliver upon a full-service suite and solve a specific problem, this framework is your message and your margin, and there are four key components to it. Number one is your positioning. Number two is your product. Number three is the packaging. And number four is your pricing. How you define these...
