Mind the Gap: Why You're Failing to Lead Across Generations

Tim Stating the Obvious

We are all entitled to great leadership—at home, at work, and in our communities. That's not just a lofty idea—it's a standard. But here's the reality: the leadership models we've inherited were built for a different time. In today's rapidly evolving world, especially with millennials and Gen Z making up most of the future workforce, it's time we adapt. That's where intergenerational leadership steps in. Leadership expert Mai Moore breaks it down simply: intergenerational leadership is about connecting different age groups to foster understanding and increase impact. It's about bridging gaps, not widening them. If we're going to attract, retain, and grow top talent, our leadership must evolve. And that means listening to what each generation brings to the table. Understanding Generational Differences at Work Here's the deal: up to six generations are in today's workforce, and each comes with different values, expectations, and communication styles. There's a major gap between how seasoned executives operate and how Gen Z thinks. But no generation has all the answers. That's why collaboration is key. This doesn't mean leaders have to abandon their experience. It means using that experience to guide, while staying open to the ideas and innovations younger workers bring. Great leaders know how to coach—not control—and how to mentor without micromanaging. Shared Values Across the Generational Divide Despite our differences, we all want the same core things: a better world, meaningful work, good health, happiness, and purpose. It's not always about money. It's about value—value in our roles, our relationships, and our contributions. Leaders must focus on what matters to the whole team. That includes creating clarity in expectations, showing employees how their work connects to a bigger mission, and encouraging them to take initiative without dampening their enthusiasm. Communication: The Real Leadership Superpower If we're going to close the generational gap, we need to improve how we talk—and listen—to one another. Each generation has its own way of communicating. Some prefer face-to-face, others thrive on digital. Effective leadership means being flexible and understanding both. Mai Moore offers a powerful tool used in military leadership: repeat back what you heard. It may seem simple, but it builds trust, ensures clarity, and reduces conflict. Communication should always be a two-way street. Mentorship should be too. Mutual respect opens the door for shared learning—seasoned professionals can pass on wisdom, and younger team members can introduce fresh, modern perspectives. Self-Awareness: Leadership Starts Within Before you can lead others, you have to face yourself. That means knowing your strengths, acknowledging your blind spots, and recognizing how your actions affect those around you. Self-awareness isn't about being perfect—it's about being present. It's understanding how your past experiences shape your leadership and being willing to evolve. Leaders who do the inner work build stronger, more resilient teams. Mai Moore shares this truth: the answers aren't out there—they're already within you. It's time to start asking better questions and leading with purpose. The Anxious Generation: What Every Leader Needs to Know

In this episode of Tim Stating the Obvious, we tackle one of the most urgent leadership issues of our time: the growing mental health crisis among today's youth and young professionals. Based on Jonathan Haidt's provocative book, The Anxious Generation, we break down how smartphones and social media rewired childhood, stunted emotional resilience, and left a generation more anxious, less connected, and struggling in the workplace. But here's the catch—this isn't just a parenting problem. It's a leadership challenge. As Gen Z enters the workforce, their struggles with screen addiction, face-to-face discomfort, and emotional fragility show up in team dynamics, productivity, and culture. If you want to lead effectively in the modern age, you've got to understand what's happening beneath the surface. We'll unpack Haidt's core recommendations—like limiting screen time, encouraging unstructured outdoor play, and promoting real-world challenges—and translate them into actionable leadership strategies. From building grit in your team to designing environments that foster emotional maturity and deep work, this episode shows you how to lead with empathy, awareness, and intention. Whether you're a CEO, educator, coach, or parent-turned-manager, this episode will challenge you to rethink how you support growth and resilience in the people you lead. Key Topics: 1. Why Gen Z is struggling—and how that affects your workplace 2. Haidt's “rewiring” theory of adolescence and tech 3. How to develop grit without micromanaging 4. The case for real-world collaboration and deep work 5. In this insightful episode, we dive deep into the differences between your brain and your mind. The brain, much like computer hardware, is the physical organ responsible for transmitting and receiving thought frequencies. Meanwhile, your mind acts as the operating system—an intangible force made up of conscious and subconscious components, directing your brain's actions. Your subconscious mind operates quietly beneath your conscious awareness, shaping your thoughts, emotions, habits, and behaviors. Through intentional practices like repetition, auto-suggestion, and visualization, you can program your subconscious mind to attract the opportunities and resources needed to fulfill your dreams. Speaking positively and cultivating supportive environments are essential, as your subconscious internalizes your words and surroundings. Think of your brain as a radio—constantly tuning into frequencies that align with your thoughts. Positive thinking will draw positive outcomes, while negative thoughts inevitably lead to negative experiences. Training your mind to view situations positively, regardless of immediate circumstances, shapes your personal beliefs and the reality you experience. Thanks to neuroplasticity, your brain is always capable of forming new connections based on repeated thoughts and actions. Visualization—mentally rehearsing desired outcomes—strengthens these neural pathways and boosts performance. Amplifying visualization with powerful emotions further anchors your core values and goals. Creating vision boards is another practical way to keep your dreams front and center.   Learn Practical Application Tips and how to Avoid Pitfalls… Connect with Tim: Website: timstatingtheobvious.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/timstatingtheobvious Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHfDcITKUdniO8R3RP0lvdw  Instagram: @TimStating Tiktok: @timstatingtheobvious #subconsciousmind #brainpower #visualization #mindset #neuroplasticity #personalgrowth #successmindset #selfimprovement #leadership

This episode features a conversation with Eric Charran, author of “Have You Ever Had a Boss That...,” discussing workplace dysfunction and strategies for thriving in challenging environments. The discussion centers around identifying common causes of dysfunction, understanding different manager archetypes, and turning negative experiences into opportunities for personal and professional growth. Eric and I begin by exploring the root causes of workplace dysfunction, which often stem from a lack of leadership training and the inheritance of outdated management styles. Leaders may adopt unhelpful behaviors due to a lack of proper training or by mimicking ineffective approaches they've observed in the past. The key is to understand that leaders have different toolboxes, and they may not have the right tools or emotional intelligence for organizational leadership. Charran categorizes different managers into unique archetypes, each with distinct behaviors and impacts on their teams.  To manage these archetypes, Eric advocates for “managing upwards” by empathizing with the manager's motivations and challenges. Tim offers practical tips on starting the legacy planning process, emphasizing the importance of leaving behind not only financial assets but also values and intentions. Listen in as we unravel the complexities of estate planning, where interpersonal dynamics often prove more challenging than logistics. Instead of starting with an attorney, Tim suggests finding a "quarterback" to coordinate various professionals, ensuring that your personal goals are met. With engaging sports analogies, we make these concepts relatable and address common pitfalls, such as misconceptions about storing estate documents. Estate planning is presented as a living, adaptable process that benefits from early action and incremental adjustments over time.   About Tim: Licensed Real Estate Broker | Investor | Author Over a decade of expertise in multifamily investments and strategic wealth-building. As the founding principal of Sweeney Architecture, Tim Sweeney is driven by a passion for reversing climate change by revolutionizing the way we build homes, businesses, and structures by aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Tim sheds light on the staggering fact that buildings in the US are responsible for 39% of all emissions. His solution aims to significantly reduce this impact by addressing construction and material production processes. One thing we love about Tim's story is that even after a long and satisfying career, he is willing to go all in on building a company with a product he believes in, proving there is no age limit on being a disruptive CEO. Here are highlights of our conversation: -Innovative Solution: Tim introduces a groundbreaking patent-pending building system that combines the energy-efficient passive house design with panels made of magnesium oxide. This fusion creates an unprecedented level of sustainability. -Career Evolution:Tim's journey highlights the diverse experiences of his career that have led to the creation of his unique and sustainable architectural solutions. -Patent Process: Tim shares insights into the patenting process, emphasizing the simplicity of securing a provisional patent and the ongoing efforts to improve and finalize the patent. He hints at future developments that could make their approach carbon-negative. -Versatile Applications: The patented system is adaptable to various construction needs, from single-family homes to multi-family buildings and commercial structures. Tim envisions a broad impact across different scales and types of construction. -Strategic Growth: Sweeney Architecture's growth strategy involves a multi-faceted approach. Tim discusses the importance of strategic partnerships, finding responsible and reliable collaborators, securing project-based funding, and potentially franchising the technology to share its benefits globally. Tim is both a Certified Passive House Designer and tradesperson, as well as is highly experienced in designing, detailing, and building panelized solutions that offer numerous benefits over conventional design and construction. How can military personnel leverage real estate investing to build wealth through owning rentals?   On this episode, host Angel Williams interviews Tim Little, a real estate investor and founder of Zana Investments, about strategies for military members to utilize real estate to build wealth. They discuss house hacking, owning rentals across duty stations, property management challenges, making the switch to commercial multifamily investing, and more.   Tim Little is the founder and CEO of ZANA Investments, a Tampa-based real estate investment firm named after his two daughters, Zara and Lana. His first intentional investment was a duplex purchased for $85k in Richmond, VA that netted $100/door in monthly profit.   [00:03 - 00:06] The Power of House Hacking Tim wishes he had the house hacked earlier by owner-occupying a small multifamily property and renting out the other unit(s). This is an excellent strategy for the military using VA loans.   [00:06 - 00:10] Military Markets & Bases When evaluating military towns, consider factors like base stability, potential base restructuring, and diversity of local employers beyond the base to avoid market risk.   [00:10 - 00:15] Challenges of Long-Distance Landlording Transitioning concentrated portfolios of small rentals across the country into commercial multifamily investments can benefit military landlords wanting to reduce management responsibilities. Unlike many bases on cheap land, MacDill AFB occupies sought-after waterfront property in downtown Tampa.   Quote: A lot of people don't think about that, like how big of a role [government contractors] play. And so if you lose that tenant base too, you know, then again, it's that knock-on effect of, it's one thing if the military move out, but if they move, then the government contractors are going to move." - Tim Little   Connect with Tim: Website: https://www.zanainvestments.com/   Visit sponsorcloud.io/contact today and unlock $2,000 of free services exclusively for REI Rocks community members! Welcome back to the Real Life Leadership Podcast! Today, we're releasing a special episode from the Grow & Scale Now summit with Tim Francis. He is an award-winning entrepreneur from Canada, and the founder of ProfitFactory.com and GreatAssistant.com.  He's a graduate of the University of Alberta, and a Certified Scrum Product Owner.   In 2010-2011 Tim was blindsided by a rare illness called Erythema Nodosum, leaving him unable to walk for 3 months.  Tim nearly went bankrupt and was forced to re-start.  He promised himself he'd “never be a burn-out entrepreneur again,” a driving motivation which led to the creation of Profit Factory.   Entrepreneurs chronically stuck working IN their business turn to Tim to achieve the Freedom and Control they've long sought.  Tim helps entrepreneurs transition from Business Operator to Business Owner, helping them successfully arrange, then delegate to a Production team around them.  Entrepreneurs appreciate their newfound freedom to work ON the business, take time off, travel, or start other ventures.  Employees appreciate how organized and clear the business is once Tim has intervened.   Tim's been a guest lecturer at NYU in New York City, at the University of Alberta in Canada, and has been a Masterclass teacher on Mixergy.  Sam Carpenter of Work the System says “One of the best, if not the best, is Tim Francis.  I support his work and coaching”, and past-client Ryan Levesque says: “Tim's help systemizing what we do across our company has set us up to go from seven to eight figures and beyond.”   Enjoy!   -   Connect with Tim:  Website: https://profitfactory.com/360delegation/      Order Chantel's Book, One Meal And A Tasting: https://chantelrayway.com/onemeal/    Join CanZell HERE: https://joincanzell.com/    Check out the CanZell Cloud HERE: https://canzellcloud.com/    Claim Your Free Ticket For The Grow And Scale Now Summit! https://growandscalenow.com/    Chantel: https://www.instagram.com/thechantelray/     For more resources, visit http://www.reallifeleaders.com/podcast    Have a leadership question you want answered?
