Entrepreneurs are always looking for the next big idea, something that doesn't exist yet. The next Facebook. The next Uber. The next Netflix. But the reality is that the next million dollar idea is a company that simply solves a problem that exists in the world. Rainway CEO Andrew Sampson doesn't have a conventional path. He's been underestimated throughout his life, has experienced overt racism, been told no more times than he can count, and his doubters continue to believe that he can't. And yet, he's been through Techstars, grown his team to 15+, successfully achieved funding, and built Rainway to revenues over $10M. You won't want to miss his story.GIVEAWAY: A few episodes back, Robbie Hardy shared the unbelievable story about how she used a magic 8-ball to help her decide whether or not to sell her company. Intellectual property is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human mind. There are many types of IP such as copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. The modern concept of intellectual property developed in Europe a few centuries ago, but in the late 20th century the concept became commonplace in the majority of the world's legal systems. The main purpose of intellectual property law is to encourage and protect the creation of a large and healthy mass of intellectual goods. To achieve this, the law gives people and businesses property rights to the information and intellectual products they create. But given the intangibility of ideas and the ability to use common elements to create similar outcomes, Intellectual property especially to the lay person is becoming more and more confusing. Adding to this confusion is the digital revolution in which publications, articles, pictures, and even business ideas can be available at the touch of a button. Furthermore, social media has elevated us all to mini content producers punching out our blogs, Insta memes, and Facebook posts at an ever-increasing pace. Surely if you are a founder or a budding entrepreneur, it behooves you to protect your own and be wary of other's intellectual property. But what about you and me? The average, everyday Joe and Jane, clicking away in our ever favorite social media app? Trevor Schmidt is a lawyer for Hutchinson Law who has extensive experience in matters associated with intellectual property prosecution, licensing, enforcement and strategic counseling. He effectively works with companies to monetize and protect their intellectual property through licensing, development, reseller agreements and associated contracts. Aleksander Levental jokes that the first Board Meeting he ever led was the first Board Meeting he ever went to. Before co-founding Feathr, Aleks was a researcher in the physics department, a delivery driver, and a waiter. So fresh out of college, he had to quickly learn how to grow a company and navigate relationships with employees (Feathr now has about 100) and investors (who have put in over $11M). Find out how he did it and lessons he's learned along the way on the latest episode of Founder Shares.GIVEAWAY: A few episodes back, Robbie Hardy shared the unbelievable story about how she used a magic 8-ball to help her decide whether or not to sell her company. Our guest today chose the career of his dreams back when he was in fourth grade - tune in to see how he followed through! Episode Introduction: From getting his undergraduate degree in physics to his varied experiences at law school, Trevor Schmidt walks us through his journey of becoming a trademark expert who helps you establish your brand’s identity. Episode Summary: Trevor Schmidt delivers this value-packed episode where he talks all about the importance of protecting your intellectual property. He shares the vivid experiences that he’s experienced as an attorney and how he ended up practicing corporate law. This conversation is filled with valuable tricks of the trade and actionable tips that you could put into use for your business right away. Main Takeaways: When getting your contracts done, ask your attorney to draft them from thinking of how these contracts will hold up in court. Makes your business operational and transactional through a contract. A business is more likely to need legal assistance in the beginning phase than it is years later. How Trevor educates his clients about the importance of legal protection: Explain to them the risks involved on a practical level. It saves you a huge cost in the longer run. Tell them about the resources available to them. How to know if you need to invest in a trademark: Ask yourself if you have enough protection through the common law or do you need added protection from the federal law? Consider your geographical area, do you plan on functioning locally or do you plan to expand nationwide? Understand whether you need a trademark or a standard character mark based on your business’ needs. If your business is based online, it’s best to get a trademark registration once you’re firm that you aim to continue growing your brand in its current form. Legally protecting your company with the help of trademarks, copyrights and contracts make your business a prime opportunity for investors. Analyze the risks of a company based on the severity as well as its likeliness to occur. When you’re saying “No” to something, always be prepared with alternative choices for it. Trevor Schmidt joins the 'Tales of the LGBTQ+' podcast to discuss his brilliant theatre career as an actor, playwright, director and producer. He also is very transparent when it comes to his life outside the theatre and how he seems himself as part of the larger Rainbow community. At the time this podcast is released, he will be releasing filmed versions of two fantastic plays which are part of the Northern Light Theatre season. You can watch 'Something Unspoken' and 'The Ugly Duchess' from the comfort of your own home. These plays are discussed in the podcast.Trevor and I worked hard to get this conversation to you. Two previous long length interviews are out there lost in the cloud somewhere, and we (jokingly) reference that in the interview you are listening to today. By the time this third recording was had, we knew each other well. He has a major bearhug coming from me when we meet properly in person for the first time. Today we're sharing another podcast that we produce, Founder Shares from Hutchison PLLC in Raleigh North Carolina. Hutchison works with startup entrepreneurs, and the host Trevor Schmidt is a partner who wanted to share their stories. Not just the triumphs and big exits, but the real story as well – the struggles, the grind, the failures. On the episode that we're sharing today, Trevor talks to both Fred Hutchison, the founder of Hutchison PLLC, and Robbie Hardy, founder of xElle Ventures, an angel investor network that invests in female entrepreneurs. Robbie and Fred were involved in a startup together back in the mid-90s, and the story of the exit there – well, your jaw will be on the floor like mine was the first time I heard it.Founder Shares on Spotify -> https://open.spotify.com/show/7y8e1Jwg3Eq9sJ1rz0I5RtFounder Shares on Apple Podcasts -> https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/founder-shares/id1526357098Founder Shares (and the Earfluence Podcast) are productions of Earfluence.
