According to Webster Dictionary, Stockholm Syndrome is the psychological tendency of a hostage to bond with, identify with, or sympathize with his or her captor. Paul wasn't a prisoner. After his encounter on the road to Damascus, Saul the hunter of the those who follow Jesus, began a road of servitude to Christ. He would form a bond, to identify with, and sympathized with his former prey. He wasn't forced to be there, nobody held him down, not until he was arrested later anyways. One of many, even to this day and beyond who once was against Christ, who now are for Him. Almost like Reverse Stockholm Syndrome. Welcome to the MAKES SENSE podcast, where we apply the science, art and philosophy of sense making to the things that make you go Hmmm? Those most pressing thoughts and discussions going on in our minds today. The Makes Sense Podcast is an expense free service with the intention of helping you execute on the concept of changing the way you look at things, so that the things you look at begin to change. Today we'll MAKE SENSE of ADVERSITY Handling Adversity with grace and how to become that version of yourself that is impeccable to your word and follows through with your commitments. No matter what. CONNECT WITH Dr. JC Doornick - https://zez.am/makessense SHOW RESOURCES and REFERENCES: Joe Rogan Podcast with David Sinclair - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUwd-D94pzE A Man's Search For Meaning Book Victor Frankl - https://amzn.to/3SzrE7s SHOW NOTES: My intention of this episode is to arm and equip you with a shift in perspective about your relationship with adversity. When I say adversity I am referring to your adversity not necessarily mine. This is a healthy place to begin this discussion as it uncovers the first step towards handling adversity. To recognize that adversity is both defined and in existence due to your own observation of it. Think that one through. Would adversity exist in the absence of you taking note of it? I mean, an event is just an event until you label it as adversity, yes? Why is this important? Well what if your sense making machine is faulty or glitched? And there is a high chance it is, due to your programming right? Remember that virtual reality suit, and your sense making machine is what you're using to label these events. Its responsibility is perceiving and processing everything? Is it safe to acknowledge that adversity only exists due to our perception and labeling of it? See, handling adversity is not just learning how to cope with it and move through or past it..Those can be valuable skills to adopt yet until you understand where adversity comes from and what it represents FOR YOU rather than TO YOU, you will always be fighting an endless war. Lets learn what adversity is, where it comes from and how it both harms and helps you. First, I want to share an interesting distinction that might help.I was listening to an episode of the Joe Rogan podcast with guest David Sinclair, a 53 year-old Harvard Biologist who claims to possess a biological age that is a decade younger as a result of practicing a plant based intermittent fasting regiment. Although I am fascinated with the concept of fasting, I heard him make mention of an observation that motivated me to create this episode on Making Sense of adversity. When Rogan asked him how he justifies eating a 2,000 calorie meal once a day for dinner then fasting for 24 hours after as being more beneficial than spreading that 2,000 calories out over small 50 calorie meals, Sinclair had this response “Because going back 6 million years, our bodies were designed or evolved to respond to adversity. And we've removed that from our lives because it feels good. But we need adversity to be resilient and fight disease.” Isn't that fascinating? To embrace adversity as something we were not only designed to handle but something we actually require to thrive and be our best? Does that help? Yes, this means that without adversity, we are at a disadvantage. I believe the challenge we face with adversity is in how we have been programmed to look at and define it. So if you are struggling with adversity, it's not your fault and there is hope. The Webster Dictionary defines adversity as a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune showing courage in the face of adversity. This is where the struggle with adversity begins. Its very definition paints it as a difficulty or misfortune. In our society, we take our kids and lock them in a box called the classroom, handing their education over to institutions, teachers and textbooks generated by who? We just assume that this is the right thing for them. Why do we accept this? Because we, as parents, have our own lives and responsibilities to provide for the family. A roof over their heads, beds to sleep in, have a little fun here and there and then pay for those schools. At varying degrees of acceptance with this system, we are forced to trust this system and hope that it sets them up for success and does little harm to our kids. Meanwhile, their vulnerable and susceptible brains continue to develop and begin to hardwire all these lessons about science, mathematics, history, language and how to perceive and survive in life. When it comes to adversity, they learn to avoid it and if they have a teacher that goes the extra mile, learn how to persevere and grow through it. We refrain from doing too much investigation into all this as we haven't got the time nor energy with all we have on our plates. So we trust the system, pull our cars up, drop them off for the day, then pick them up hoping it all went well. Can you see why so many are turning to homeschooling these days? Call it a healthy decision or not. It is the only way you can maintain control of what your children are consuming and what they are exposed to so it makes sense to me why so many move to that model. My personal strategy at this time is to have my children attend school and make a point to sit and discuss what they learned and encourage them to challenge everything before they allow it to wire into their operating system and sense making machine. Yes parents, this means at the end of your long day, we can't just pick them up, help them with homework and feed them. We must ask them questions and teach them to do the same. Why is this stuff important to recognize? We're talking about the idea of handling adversity with grace here. How can we begin to do that without understanding what we've been taught and hard wired to know about it? What we are talking about is program awareness perception. Simply becoming aware of our programming. How it was formed and how it impacts our sense making system. In this case, how it impacts our perception and response to adversity. It reminds me of the vaccine controversy. When I was younger on break from Chiropractic school, I thought it would be cool to show up at a popular bulk food and household supply chain one day when they were offering free flu shots. Leaving my opinion out of this particular topic of discussion, my intention was to study the behavior of those in line and expose how powerful their programming was in prompting them to make decisions. I presented myself as a student doing his thesis on the topic of human behavior, with a specific interest in how we make decisions for our families during times of adversity. I presented this scenario to create space for those I would interview to want to share their opinions. I had an audio recording device and simply asked random people “what they were online for?” They said free flu shots. I then asked why THey said it's flu season. I asked when does that start and begin? THey said they weren't sure? Then I asked who was giving the flu shots. They said they weren't sure but assumed it was some sort of health professional? Then I asked, what is in a flu shot? They said they weren't sure. Disclaimer. On this podcast we make a concerted effort not to share our opinions on topics like our school systems, politics, religion and vaccinations. When we interview guests or interact with listeners, we feel that everyone believes what they believe and we respect and honor that. My opinion is not relevant here. My intention is to simply help you become more conscious human beings and recognize where you got these ideas and why you came up with your opinions. They were for the most part taught to you. Where do we go in this discussion from here? Your perception of adversity is merely that. A perception. And your perception making machine has been programmed by your MFTPSE. If your desire is to learn how to handle adversity with grace? Your first step is that program awareness perception. To understand that your current perception of it is your best guess based on what you've learned about it. In my four step Interface Response System, we learn to take note of our knee jerk programmed thoughts and feelings about what we see, then insert a spacer or pause on them knowing that they may be flawed and can produce an inefficient perception and response to the stimulus. Placing us in what I call the eye of the storm. A space in between the stimulus and our response to it, where we have the opportunity to look at it with a more conscious, rational and logical mind. Thus triggering a more effective and goal supportive response that helps us stay on track and follow through with our original plans to move forward. I have created an online course for the interface response system that can be found in our Makes Sense Academy, as well as dove deeper into it in my book, Makes Sense, solving the mystery of why shit happens. A big moment of clarity and distinction came from a fantastic book and story i read. In his book, A Man's Search for Meaning, Author Viktor Frankl shares a miraculous story of both resilience and perseverance through the trials and tribulations of being a prisoner in the Nazi Death Camps under the reign of Hitler. It's a must read yet its highlight that's relevant to this discussion is how he came to not only survive the traumatic event but find his way to forgive those that did him harm. His secret? He speaks about the “space between” the stimulus or adverse event and your response as being the secret to handling adversity with grace. So in summary, handling adversity is only difficult due to your relationship and perception of it. If you find yourself struggling with adverse and hard times, there is a good chance it is due to your current operating system and sense making machine's interpretation of it. Not necessarily it itself. By learning to implement the tools in my interface response system and embracing things like David Sinclairs insights on how adversity is not only necessary but the catalyst for evoking the best version of you, we can learn to stop surviving during times of adversity and start thriving. Happy hunting my friends. I hope you are blessed with tons of adversity today so you can be your best and kick some ass. Remember, if you learned something today, please, give it away. That is how its gonna stay. Consider sharing this podcast or our makes sense academy community and join the uprising of the sleepwalking masses. Hope to see you in our community soon.
Candice is joined by a licensed psychoanalyst and author, Dr. Robin Stern, to break down the concept of gaslighting. At this point, we've all heard the word thrown out one way or the other - it was Webster Dictionary's Word of the Year in 2022 after all. But do we actually understand what it means and where the word even comes from? Dr. Robin Stern not only has been researching this manipulation tactic for decades but has unfortunately even lived it herself, making her a real expert in the matter. In this discussion, Candice and Dr. Stern explore the ways in which we can refind our loss of self-trust and detect the warning signs that we may be being gaslit before we're in far too deep. Ep #235 - Nurture. Embracing Our Lives with Loving Care - A Solo Show with Susan Burrell What does it mean to nurture oneself? Can the nurturing you show to others in your life also be embraced by your inner-self? In this solo episode I talk about the theme I have chosen for the month of July – Nurture. You all know I like to look up the word and get the written definition rolling around in my head. So of course, I looked up “Nurture” in the Webster Dictionary – here's the definition: “To Supply with nourishment. To educate. To further the development of or foster.” When I hear the word “Nurture” I often think of mothers caring for their children or their elderly parents. I think this is true for many of us. In today's chat I explore all that and more. Including where in our lives we can foster love and make connection with others. And not just those in our lives but also with the environment we are surrounded by. To learn more about how I show up in the world please visit my website: SusanBurrell.com
Welcome my friends to season 3 of the Determined to Dance podcast. My prayer is that you'll be encouraged to persevere daily in our chaotic world. Today's episode, Let's Dare to Dance with God, starts a thirty-episode season where we dig deep into what it takes to excel during the dance… Show notes: Let's Dare to Dance With God Stay determined to dance. On the podcast, season one, we learned what exactly it is to dance with God and how to persevere where we are, no matter what the circumstances. Season two was spent discussing prayer, since learning to talk and listen is essential when it comes to being in step with the Father. Season three will be a study in the book that started my road to God's great dance floor: Daring to Dance with God by Jeff Walling. While re-reading this book about stepping into God's embrace, I decided to take twenty-eight interesting points that Walling makes and bring them in for discussion. Only twenty-eight, you might ask? I thought you said a thirty-episode season. I did, my friend. Two episodes will be reserved for a special interview with the author himself. Jeff Walling has graciously consented to talk about his work in greater detail. You won't want to miss these two episodes, I know. Our first episode quote from Walling? “Don't you want to dance? I do. I want to be swept away on a cloud of music and laughter. I want to experience the sheer bliss of waltzing and gliding across the room to the sound of an orchestra in full swing. And not just with anyone. No, I want to dance with the one who invented dancing. I want to dance with God. And guess what? He wants to dance with me. And he wants to dance with you too.” As we dare to dance with the Father in greater ways than ever before, I'd like to share an example that stood out to me one day at church. During the worship music segment of the service, my eyes were drawn to a young mother and her three-year-old child. They were a delight to watch. The child jumped up and down, twirled in her dress, and waved her hands in the air. She clearly enjoyed dancing with God in her own special way. Her mother stood singing, eyes raised to the sky and hands lifted, palm up, at the waist. She worshiped in a different fashion. Do you think God accepted only one or the other? I believe God is equally pleased with our worship if it is from the heart. The Word says in Matthew 15:8: “These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.” NKJV God clearly states that He looks for a heart that is drawing close to Him. It's not the outer appearance that counts. I Samuel 16:7 says: “But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” NKJV So, let's begin this season with a glimpse at our hearts. Not the blood-pumping organ in our body. The 1828 Webster Dictionary has several thoughts on the heart besides the physical: The seat of the affections and passions, as of love, joy, grief, enmity, courage, pleasure, etc. The seat of the understanding. The seat of the will; hence, secret purposes, intentions, or designs. The seat. When we look at that word, it says: The place where a thing is settled or established. When our hearts draw close to God, we seek Him with our affections, passions, understanding, and will. We don't do this once a month or once a year. We want our drawing close to be a settled, established part of our lives. Now, Father God is not looking for robots. Routine and order aren't bad as long as we are drawing near out of love, and affection, to be safe in Abba's arms. If I dare to venture out onto the dance floor of life, especially during difficult times, I need to know the outstretched hand of God is strong. Mighty. Safe. In John 10:28-30,
The Webster Dictionary definition of sober - not drinking or using mind altering substances - is more of a definition of being dry. Mike and Glenn discuss how sober is more than not drinking, it's the byproduct of working a quality recovery program. So what does sober really mean? Sober is characterized by reason, sanity, or self-control; showing mental and emotional balance. Are you emotionally balanced?Physically balanced? Spiritually balanced? Glenn and Mike lay it out at the coffee shop like this: “We're on the sober path. We're not at the sober ski lodge, we haven't arrived. Courage... the definition, according to the Webster Dictionary is : mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, Fear or difficulty. Sounds simple, and yet, is probably the hardest thing to do. A quote from JRR Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series says, "Courage is found in unlikely places". I like that. It makes me feel like courage is not just for Super Heros. That maybe, just maybe, any one can be courageous, and in so being, do amazing things in this world. Just like those Hobbits did in all those wonderful books and movies, just like so many ordinary people do, every single day. Today we continue with conference 4, or chapter 4, of I Believe in Love on Abandonment in Jesus. Webster Dictionary defines abandonment as “an unrestraint, or being uninhibited.” This is precisely how Jesus desires that we come to him; with a radical, unrestrained, and uninhibited reckless trust and love. But practically speaking what does this look like?Father Jean says “Practically speaking, it consists of seeing the will of God in all that creatures and events present to you” and as St. Francis de Sales says it is to ‘ask nothing and refuse nothing'Discussion Questions:1. “If he destroys my little plans, I kiss His adorable hand. It is because He wants to realize His own, which are more beautiful anyway than those which I could have made myself.” Have you ever thought of God‘s plan for you as “beautiful”?2. God refused the prayer of St. Monica for her son St. Augustine, in order to answer her greater prayer (see pages 101-102). Have you seen similar circumstances in your life (failures or victories)? Has this increased your trust and abandonment in God?3. “It is said that the Devil makes the gravity of the sin appear to be less during the temptation and greater after the fall.” How do you think knowing this truth can help you avoid sin?
So what is polyamory? The Webster Dictionary defines polyamory as the state or practice of having more than one open romantic relationship at a time. “Poly” comes from the Greek word meaning many, and “-amory” from the Latin for “amor” which means love. How is a polyamorous relationship different from polygamy or swinging? Why does the LGBTQ community have more polyamorous relationships? Studies have shown that 1 in 6 U.S. adults want to be polyamorous, and 1 in 9 have been polyamorous at some point in their lives! In this episode I talk to my friend Roger who lives in South Florida and is in a committed polyamorous relationship with two other men. They share a home and many happy times. Arrival of HopeGood News • November 28, 2021Teacher: Dave Brown--Luke 2:10 NIVBut the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."Advent means arrivalIsaiah 7:14 NIV"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV"For to us a child is born, To us a child is given, And the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, Establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever."Webster Dictionary: "to cherish a desire with anticipation""to desire with expectation of obtainment or fulfillment"Timothy Keller"You and I are unavoidably and irreducibly hope based creatures. How we live now is controlled by what we think will happen later by our understanding of our future state."Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 NIVI said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good." But that also proved to be meaningless. "Laughter," I said, "is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?" I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives.I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem as well—the delights of a man's heart. I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.C.S. Lewis"Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water...If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy [my desire], that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. If that is so, I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or to be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage."Because of Jesus' birth, there is hope for a ruined humanity, a hope of forgiveness, a hope of peace with God, and a hope of future glory. There's purpose in our past because God intends to use our past for his glory!Acts 1:11 NIV"This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

Got my mind going so much. So of course, in miracles, chapter 31, the final vision, section seven, the Savior's vision, it's actually on page 662 on the book that I have. And, uh, A Course In Miracles, combined volume. So I have never been a church guy in, um, through my life when I was a kid, I went to church a couple of times that. I, I I'm telling you the story because of the contempt or the judgment or the, yeah. The contempt that comes up when I hear certain words. And, uh, because the ego is strong in me. And, um, when I talk about this stuff, this is not to knock anybody who loves church and, you know, loves whatever. How God is being, uh, you know, however God's manifesting through their church. Awesome. I tend to go to recovery meetings to find connection to source and stuff like that.Mischa Z: 01:39 And I know a lot of people in recovery also go to church and stuff like that. So anyway, I probably didn't even need to talk about all of that, but just know that I've never been a church guy too much contempt. The dogma freaks me out. And, um, I'm sure the dogma of the recovery groups that I go to freaks other people out as well. So we're all leaning into our own dogma, but like the word savior, for example, historically, that would, you know, uh, would, uh, shut my mind down. I'd be like, savior heck with that, save your, shave your savior. But now the fact that I can say it on this podcast and that I can read content that has that word in it that's growth for me, perhaps the next time, I won't need to say this disclaimer, which would be ultimate growth.Mischa Z: 02:52 This section talks about salvation and judgment, a bunch and salvation as, so it's such an interesting concept. When I hear that salvation, it susses out that contempt in me, um, it shines that light of contempt on me. And honestly, I don't even really know where it came from or manifested from. Like I didn't really ever have a bad experience in church growing up. I, my parents definitely were not church goers. As in my youth. I went to church a couple of times with various friends. And I never really gripped me enough that I wanted to go back, but I did like the, the fellowship and, and such so anyhow salvation. So I was like, let's look up the word salvation as according to, to Webster. And the point of this is like, do I want salvation or don't I would, I rather hold the word salvation in contempt, therefore I don't want salvation or is salvation something to be wanted.Mischa Z: 04:16 So I went ahead and looked up salvation and Webster and definition two as what I'm going to start with because that's, I think you'll see that heck yes, I want salvation. I do. When I read number two. Liberation from ignorance or illusion. At this point in my life, I do want liberation from ignorance or illusion and/or illusion. Back in the day I did , I liked the illusions that I embraced and they served me. I liked the ignorance. Ignorance has definitely been bliss, blessed in my life over the years. However, when the veil of ignorance can be cracked, then you're kind of hosed. So yes, indeed. I do want ignorant. Uh, I do want, uh, salvation, according to definition, Webster two: liberation from ignorance or illusion. Number three, definition, three, a preservation from destruction or failure preservation from destruction or failure. Well, of course I might want some salvation there, deliverance from danger or difficulty deliverance from danger or difficulty. Let's go with 1) a. This is where it starts to get a little wonky for me. Deliverance from the power and the effects of sin. Now, historically, that definitely would have been a, uh, my mind would've started to shut down a little bit close off to these ideas. But today I love this idea deliverance from the power and effects of sin.Mischa Z: 06:24 And yeah, I would like that. I like the idea that there is no saying that that is an illusion and, and some of the things that come with that. One B the agent, or means that affect salvation, or it could be effects the agent, or means that affect salvation. C 1) c., I kind of like this one, Christian science: the realization of the supremacy of capital. I infinite capital M mind over all bringing with it, the destruction of the illusion of sin sickness and death. The realization of the supremacy of infinite mind over all bringing with it, the destruction of the illusion of sin sickness and death.Mischa Z: 07:26 And if we believe we are our bodies, I am my body. The body is the be all end, all of my existence, which may or may not be true. But if I hold strong to that, then I am going to believe in sickness because sickness ultimately, and death ends the body. And I, I, this is what comes to mind when I think of Christian science and it, and that this definition gives me a new appreciation of Christian Scientists. And that's that I, but if I, and I'm talking a bit out of ignorance here, but from what I understand, a Christian Scientists, they are not big into traditional Western medicine. Like if they get sick cancer or some such thing, from what I understand, a Christian Scientist would pray or do these things and, and would avoid say getting treatment for cancer. Now, when I hear people talk about that, somebody who's not a Christian Scientist, and they hear somebody say that they say a Christian scientist naive really believes that if they get cancer, they turn to God. They pray to God. And they believe that God will heal their sickness like the physical sickness, the cancer itself. And I would challenge that line of thinking that a Christian scientist says, Hey, I'm not my body. And that I'm much more in that. I'm part of this. What is it, uh, this, um, infinite mind.Mischa Z: 09:22 And so there's no need to heal from the sickness because this blip of time that we're represented by a body is an illusion. So there's no need to, like, I don't care if I die in other words, or I'll trust in God that if the cancer is meant to go away, it'll go away. If the cancer is meant to, end the usefulness of my body on this planet. So be it. And I love that thought. I love the thought of being so convicted that there's more going on than just our bodies that you're like, yeah, it's all good. Like there's no need to stress about the sickness or the short-term illusory pain that I'm going to feel.Mischa Z: 10:13 Cause I'm more than my body. I'm part of the infinite mind. So sin sickness and death are an illusion. I'm not going to be die. I'm just going to be perhaps liberated from this current way that I relate to the planet. I believe that, um, I'm not going to get a talk about judgment. I'll have to save that for the next episode, because I think that I hit a good, um, at least eight to 10 minutes, love to all. And, uh, I'm down for salvation. What I'm trying to tell you is today I choose. Yes. Salvation sounds good. Why not? And I ask you, are you willing to embrace the concept of salvation? Peace out, have a good day.

This Sunday evening sermon was originally delivered on March 4, 2001, and released on Two Journeys on July 4, 2021. sermon transcript Open your Bibles and turn to 1 Corinthians 1. We're beginning a series tonight in the Book of Proverbs, and we're starting therefore in 1 Corinthians 1. Does that make sense? Now, you may wonder, "What in the world does 1 Corinthians 1 have to do with Proverbs?" But it has everything to do with Proverbs. The common theme is wisdom. We're gonna be talking tonight about wisdom, and I wanna start at the center of our wisdom, and that is Jesus Christ, Himself. The Apostle Paul made a statement in 1 Corinthians 1:22, and he said there, "Jews demand miraculous signs, and Greeks look for wisdom." Wisdom. I think we're very Greek people. I really think that we are in love with what the human mind can achieve and accomplish. We're in love with our own technology, with our achievements, with our ability to reason things out and think things through. We have think tanks and experts, and for any problem, any time that there's a dispute or a difficulty, there's never a shortage of experts to come in and give us some insight from all their study and some wisdom. And so, we are, I think, in this sense, very much like the Greeks of old, when Paul said that Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom. The Greeks were full of famous philosophers. Can you think of some Greek philosophers that were... Socrates, Aristotle. That's right. Plato, perhaps the most famous. Many others, Pythagoras. I bet you didn't realize that he was a philosopher, but he really was, in addition to the Pythagorean theorem. I'm sure you all remember what the Pythagorean theorem was. That's right. A squared plus B squared equals C squared. Yes, and that's exciting, but Mr. Pythagoras did other things besides that, and he was a Greek philosopher. Democritus, Parmenides and others. There are famous Greek philosophers, and there were schools of Greek philosophy throughout the history of Athens and Greece. Atomism, for example, the idea that all of matter is made up of little particles called atoms. That sound familiar? Now, the Greeks were the first ones that thought that up. And Epicureanism, Platonism, realism, stoicism, hedonism. That's a big favor today. Life is about pleasure. Let's eat and drink and be merry for tomorrow we die. That's Greek philosophy. But it's interesting, a statement that Paul makes here in 1 Corinthians, and look at it in verse 21. 1 Corinthians 1:21. Let's begin at verse 20. It says, "Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe." Now, that's an amazing statement he makes there. The Greeks were looking for wisdom, they were looking for God as well. Plato had statements about God and they were trying to find him through their intellectual achievements, but the amazing thing about the statement is that it was the wisdom of God that they could never find him that way. You can't find God that way. By thinking deeply and meditating about the world and about yourself, and working through axioms of truth. You're never gonna find God that way. And it's wisdom from God that you can't find God that way. In the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know him. But a simple slave, or a common man or woman who hears and believes the gospel of Jesus Christ, they have the wisdom of God. Isn't that amazing? He says later, "We have the mind of Christ." We have the mind of Christ. We have the true wisdom. Paul says in Romans 11, one of my favorite passages, he says, "Oh, the depth of the riches, the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments and his paths beyond tracing out. Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?" Think about that. Who's gonna be chief counsel or giver to God? His right hand man, to give him some advice when he needs it. He calls him in, 'I'm having a little trouble with creation, I'm trying to work through this DNA thing, and I've kind of lost my way a little bit. Help me out here.' Who's gonna be God's counselor? Who's gonna give him some advice and some wisdom? Does he need one? No, his wisdom is infinite, it's unsearchable. It's unsearchable. I always think about the unsearchable wisdom of God in terms of plumbing the depths of the ocean, and thinking about the amount of string you have in your pocket and tying it up to a rock and just keep going and going and keep adding other pieces of string and it goes deeper and deeper, and you ask your buddies or some other people for some string and it just keeps going. You'll never plumb the depths. That's the wisdom of God, it's unsearchable, it's deep, the wisdom of God. And the Greeks weren't gonna find it simply by thinking a lot and by talking to one another. In verse 25 of 1 Corinthians 1, he says, "There's no true wisdom apart from God." It says, "The foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength." Isn't that wonderful? God's foolish moments is wiser than our best moment. Does God have any foolish moments? No. What is Paul doing here? He's really speaking tongue-in-cheek, and you know why? Because he went and preached the gospel to the philosophers, and they said it was foolishness. Utter foolishness. The idea of a Jewish carpenter, dead on the cross, put into a tomb and risen from the dead on the third day, what is that? That's utter foolishness. And so he says, "Okay, foolishness. But the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom." Wiser than man's wisdom. Christ is our wisdom, isn't He? Look at verse 30, 1 Corinthians 1:30. "It is because of him... " Actually, I can't do this unless I read the whole section. Verse 26, "Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you are wise by human standards, not many were influential, not many were of noble birth, but God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world, and the despised things, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus." You could meditate on that for years. Just that one sentence. "It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus." Think about that. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us, what? Wisdom from God. Our wisdom is Jesus Christ. He is our wisdom. He has become for us wisdom from God, that is our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written, Let him who boasts boast in the Lord. And so God is our wisdom. Jesus Christ is our wisdom, and we're going to be skating across perhaps the surface of Proverbs, there's no way we're gonna go verse by verse through 31 chapters of Proverbs. But Proverbs lends itself very well to a topical study, doesn't it? You really don't know why Proverbs 22:17 follows Proverbs 22:16. And so what we can do is go topically or thematically through and draw them out, and try to understand some wisdom from God. But I wanted to start here so that you would know the ultimate wisdom of God is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. It's the cross of Jesus Christ and the empty tomb. That is the wisdom of God, and we have the pleasure of having that wisdom if we've simply believed the gospel of Jesus Christ. You're as wise as you need to be. Isn't that wonderful? So stop studying! What else is there to learn? You know everything! Is that true? Well, no, there's some practical wisdom that we need, isn't it? And that is because sin has deep roots in our lives, it affects everything we do, and we need some expulsive wisdom, don't we? To get in there and start adjusting the way we think about some things. Yes, we've been saved. We acknowledge that we're sinners, we acknowledge that we needed a savior, we acknowledge that we needed Jesus Christ, but we still have some problems, don't we? Are you all done being saved? Well, you're done being justified. The moment you trusted in Jesus Christ, you were justified, right? If you're a believer, that's finished once for all, but are you done being saved? No, according to Paul, he says, "Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed." So our salvation is still being worked out, and it's yet to come, on judgment day we'll be saved. There's a whole salvation package, and part of that is a daily practical wisdom from God, isn't it? And I don't think you're gonna find it any better than in the Book of Proverbs. Proverbs deals with some issues, doesn't it? How do we deal with our money? Or, how do we raise our children? Or, how can we have a good marriage? How can we be a good employee? How can we look at life rightly? That's the wisdom of Proverbs, and I think we need it. But I think before we go on, I wanna remind you of a verse I spoke about this morning. Where does wisdom come from? If you lack wisdom, what should you do? You should ask God. How is it that we keep coming again and again to a simple theme that we need to be spiritual beggars? Again and again and again, "Blessed are the poor in spirit," spiritual beggars, "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." If you want anything, simply ask God. James 1:5, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God. And He gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given." And do you know what he might do? He might direct you to the Scripture. "Read it," He might say. "Read the instruction book, and there's some wisdom in there for you." Now, who wrote the Book of Proverbs? Other than God, of course, we know that it's inspired by God, but humanly speaking, who wrote Proverbs? That's right, Solomon. Turn to Proverbs 1:1, and He tells us right off who wrote it. Proverbs 1:1, and it says there, "The Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel." So that solves it. Now, we know that in the Book of Proverbs, there are some sayings from other wise men, and we'll get to that later on. But in general, most of the Proverbs in the 31 chapters were written by Solomon, are inspired by Solomon. Now, where did Solomon get his wisdom? Well, he got it from God. And you remember the story, Solomon was young and inexperienced, and he was having a dream, and in that dream, God came to him and said, "Ask for anything you want and it'll be given to you." What would you ask for? I've talked to others before about that. If you had that carte blanche, that blank check with God's signature at the bottom, what would you ask for? Seriously, what would you ask for? Godly heart, that's a good one. Other thoughts? What would you ask for? If you were in Solomon's place, what would you ask for? To know God. Now, this is eternal life that they may know you, the only true God. So you want eternal life, Bob, it sounds like. Alright, something else? What would you ask for? Okay, all your loved ones that they might be saved. Paul says, "My heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved." Yearning and a hunger for that, alright. That you might be active and available to God the rest of your life in spreading the gospel, that would be a wonderful thing to ask for. How about, I'd like to be in heaven now? [chuckle] Okay, yeah. I remember when I was a child and reading those Aladdin lamp stories, and it's like, if you get three wishes, what would you wish for? Wish for infinite wishes, that kind of thing. Well, you can't trick him with that. I think that might be wonderful to say, "God, I like the wisdom to answer the question. I don't know what I should ask for. Doesn't the Scripture say that? We don't know what to pray for." That's right. Be careful what you wish for, you may get it. Frankly, all of these answers that I'm getting have been instructed by the Scriptures, haven't they? We've been told to ask or yearn for a godly heart or eternal life, or that your friends may be saved, etcetera. These are coming right up out of the wisdom of God, the Scriptures themselves. I'm glad to hear that none of you said, "Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?" Ah, that's encouraging. And there are these moments that have gladdened the heart of a pastor, and that was big, and I appreciate that. But Solomon asked for wisdom, and I think he felt it acutely, didn't he? Why would Solomon be yearning for wisdom at that particular moment in his life? Yeah, it's a big job to be king. And he's a young man, he's inexperienced, he's got the humility to be a beggar there, doesn't he? To say, "I don't know what to do, I don't know how to be a king." And I'll tell you something, I have thought about it many times as a pastor in the last couple of years, as a matter of fact. I don't know how to be a pastor, I don't know how to be your pastor. There's no shame in that. I'll tell you, I'm young and inexperienced, I've come to God numerous times on my knees and say, "What do you want me to do? I don't know how to go. Give me wisdom." Why would God forsake that kind of prayer? That's James 1:5, He said, he'll give it generously to anyone who asks, and there's a certain confidence in knowing you can go to God any time with an open heart, as long as you're willing to do anything He says, to hear anything he might say, He's gonna give you that wisdom. But that's what King Solomon did, and God gave him incredible wisdom. You see, this is the way God is. He doesn't give a little, okay? He's gonna lavish wisdom on Solomon more than anyone that had ever lived before or has ever lived since, save one, Jesus Christ, we'll get to that. But Solomon was lavished with the gift of wisdom. Incredible wisdom. Now, what is wisdom? A little while ago, we bought an 1828 Webster Dictionary. Now, why is the 1828 version important? Well, Noah Webster was a Christian, and almost all of his definitions of words have some Bible quote in them, it's an incredible thing. So you're reading through, and that's a great book to look up the definition of wisdom, and he did a great job. Noah Webster in 1828, wisdom in terms of an act, or effect, or practice, listen to this, is the right use and exercise of knowledge, the choice of laudable ends, that means good ends or praisable ends, and the best means to accomplish them. In other words, to know where is a good place to go and then to know what's the best way to get there, that's wisdom. To know where it is you wanna drive to, and then what's the shortest route to get there are the best route. Well, that's the definition, that's an act, effect, or practice. Also is a faculty of the mind, Noah Webster tells us, wisdom is the faculty of discerning or judging what is most just, proper, and useful. There's a real moral side to these definitions. Have you noticed? What is righteous, what is just, and what is best and useful, that's the ability of the mind to discern those things. Also as an acquirement, something you can gain, wisdom is the knowledge and use of what is best, most just, most proper, most conducive to prosperity and happiness. You can become a wise man or a wise woman by immersing yourself in Scripture under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. You can discern what is best, discern what is just and right, and not only that, but how to bring it about, what's the best way to perceive. That is God's gift. Practical wisdom is discretion. Now, prudence, for example, is a form of wisdom according to Noah Webster. Prudence is the exercise of sound judgment in avoiding evils. I like that. The exercise of sound judgment and avoiding pitfalls and trouble, avoiding evils. He says it's a subset of wisdom. Wisdom is the exercise of sound judgement in either avoiding evils or attempting good. Both. So that's wisdom. Thank you, Noah Webster. But I think in best, we see wisdom lived out in daily life, don't we? If you know a wise man or woman, you just watch how they live. How do they organize their affairs? What do they do with their checkbook? How do they organize their time? How do they administer their office? Let's say. How do they train their children? How do they organize their affairs? It's best seen in everyday life, and thus I believe in the Christian church, mentoring is crucial, don't you think? To have a wise man, if you're a man or a woman, if you're a woman, who can just show you how to live in everyday life. Practical wisdom comes from experience, walking with Jesus through things. That's why Paul says in 1 Corinthians 11:1, "Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ." As we go through the Book of Proverbs, we're gonna have two very helpful tutors or mentors. One of them is the wise man, and what's his counterpart? He's very much instructive as well. The fool. That's right, we're gonna learn a lot from both, aren't we? The wise man is gonna teach us some things and the fool is gonna teach us some things, and we're gonna learn from both. Sometimes they appear, both of them, in one proverb. Wise man does this, the fool does that. And so, we're gonna learn by contrast and by comparison. What is a wise life in practical situations. We're gonna see the wise and the fool in various settings. For example, Proverbs 12:15, "The way of the fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice." Alright, what is that teaching about a fool? "I don't need to hear anything from anybody, I've got this thing scoped, got it figured out. I don't need anything from anybody." What does a wise man say? "Do you have any words of wisdom for me? I could use some advice here." You see what I'm saying? So we learn right away from our tutors: The wise man and the fool on the issue of taking advice. Proverbs 12:16, the very next one, "A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult." Well, what does the wise man teaching a prudent man? Overlooking insult. Don't take it to heart. Alright, but what does the fool teaches? As soon as somebody irritates you, say something about it, show in a flash of anger, demonstration of power. We live in a foolish age, don't we? We live in a very angry age. As soon as somebody insults or crosses you, we're gonna show it. Well, Book of Proverbs has dealt with that thousands of years ago. 'A wise man overlooks an insult, but a fool shows annoyance at once." Or Proverbs 12:23, "A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly." So a wise person tends to be kinda quiet, they don't say as much, kinda keep their wisdom to themselves until it's needed. But a fool blurts out his folly as soon as he thinks of something to say. Or this one? Proverbs 15:19, "The way of the sluggard," we're gonna be meeting the sluggard. What's another word for sluggard? Yeah, a lazy person. That's right. A lazy person. "The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway." In other words, a lazy person who doesn't do his business and get his things done has a difficult life, a hard life, there's always trouble, there's always difficulties. But a wise man is like a paved road, when you get your things done on time, etcetera. So it's a case study of everyday life. What is wisdom like? And what is it not like? Now, Solomon's greatest exports in his kingdom was wisdom. Do you know that? That's what they exported. People came from around the world to listen to Solomon. The Queen of the South, for example, came and she brought her whole retinue and they brought all kinds of stuff, gold and silver and rare woods and spices and all that, and they traded it all for what? Some words of wisdom. Just some advice, just to be able to sit and listen to Solomon. And Solomon was amazing, it said in 1 Kings 4, "God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon's wisdom was greater than all the wisdom of the East, the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than any other man, and his fame spread to the surrounding nations. He spoke... " Get this, "3000 proverbs." We have just a sampling of his wisdom here, 3000 proverbs and songs numbered a thousand and five. So he was a composer. He described plant life from the cedar that grows in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the walls. He also taught about animals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon's wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world who had heard of his wisdom. So people from all around came to listen to Solomon, and we get to sit at his feet and listen to him too, don't we? We get to listen to his wisdom, as written in the Book of Proverbs. The Queen of the South, Queen of Sheba, came to listen to Solomon's wisdom. This is what she said, "The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true, but I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told to me. In wisdom and wealth, you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your men must be, how happy your officials who continually stand before you to hear your wisdom." So that's amazing. God, as I said, gave lavishly to Solomon. But later on, another one would come, a descendant of Solomon, through his father, Joseph. And it was Jesus Christ. And you remember what Jesus said about Solomon? He said, "The Queen of the South," this is Matthew 12:42, "came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now One greater than Solomon is here." One greater than Solomon is here. Jesus Christ's wisdom far exceeds that of Solomon. Solomon described plant life, cedars and hyssop, Jesus designed them. Think about that. Solomon observed the mating rituals of certain kinds of fish perhaps, or animals, categorized them into categories, Jesus created them and sustained them. That is the wisdom of Jesus Christ. And by the way, you have Jesus Christ living within you. You have the mind of Christ. Isn't that amazing? Stop and think that someday your wisdom and your knowledge of God will far exceed the head of Solomon, when you've seen Jesus face to face, and you know as fully as you are fully known. Now, let's look for the first seven verses of Proverbs, and we're gonna just work our way through these, and that'll set us up for our future study. Proverbs 1:1, we've already read. "The proverbs of Solomon son of David, King of Israel: For attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, for doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young, let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance, for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. But fools despise wisdom and discipline." Now, as you look through these seven verses, he tells you at the beginning why he's written these down, what are the Proverbs for. And listen to what he says, "Therefore, attaining wisdom and discipline." What is discipline? In a moment, he's gonna talk about attaining or acquiring a wise and disciplined life. What does that mean? Discipline. Okay, using your time well, resources well. Go. Self-control. Okay, other thoughts on discipline? Teaching, okay. I think it's really related to the word disciple. There's a close relationship between discipleship and discipline. Self-control is a big theme. How many of you feel that... Say again. Okay, obedience and submission to God's leading in your life, okay. That would be good. I think what Max said in terms of stewardship, there's a sense in which God has given us these resources and we're supposed to be wise and disciplined stewards of them. We're supposed to know what they are and how to use them best. And so, how many of you feel that you would like to grow in self-discipline? Okay, one or two of you. And for the rest, it speaks of you because it says, Let the wise hear and increase in their learning. So all of those of you who have reached that level of self-discipline that you would like, you can continue and increase your learning. The thing is that the Book of Proverbs is written, no matter what your level of discipleship. Look what it says, it says, "For acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair. Giving prudence to the simple." What does that mean? Simple. He is simple. What is a simple person? Right, not proud. Calmer, say again. Naive, right? Or could we say a beginner in the journey of wisdom? Naive, just starting. Okay, you're just a beginner when it comes to wisdom. Well, this book's for you. It's for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young. So there's a parallel there, between simple and young, but then also in verse 5, "Let the wise listen and add to their learning." We're never finished, are we? Some of you have been alive for many, many more years than I have, and your gray hair testifies to the years you've been alive, and you've experienced things that younger people have not experienced, but are you done learning? Are you finished? Not at all. And so there's a practical wisdom still waiting for you in this book. "Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance." That's a beautiful word, isn't it? I like to think in my life of the way of wisdom. There's a way, a path in front of us, isn't there? And sometimes it's hard to see, it's hard to know what direction to go. We need wisdom, we need guidance, and we must learn to turn to Scripture, and the Book of Proverbs, gives us some very practical wisdom and guidance for that journey, the way of wisdom. And then he says, "for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise," so you're gonna understand some things that you wouldn't have understood without studying. And then comes the motto for the entire book, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge." The fear of the Lord. What do you think of when you think of the fear of the Lord? What does that mean? The fear of the Lord. Respect, okay. A common word would be awe. People think of awe. Is there any terror involved? Well, in one translation, 2 Corinthians 5, it says, "Since then we know the terror of the Lord, we persuade men." So there's some terror of the Lord. Every time you look in the Book of Judges or some of the other places where the Spirit of the Lord comes, or there's an appearance of the Lord, terror comes over those who come close to God. And yet there's an attraction, isn't there? There's a yearning to be in the presence of God, a sense of His presence and the awe and the power of God, and yet a sense of fear as well. Now, Romans chapter 8 says that we're not made a slave again to fear. It's not a slaverish-type fear, it's just who he is and who we are. That's all. And so, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. You wanna start on the journey, you start by fearing the Lord. And the contrast is just as clear, the fool despises the whole thing, they despise the journey, they're not going to listen, even if you tell them a thousand times, they're not going to listen, because they don't fear the Lord. So this book will profit you and benefit you as you fear the Lord, but if you don't fear the Lord, you're not even on the journey, not even walking along the way. So the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Come into this book, fearing the Lord, and he's got wisdom for you. Now, what we're going to do in our study beginning next week, is we're gonna begin looking at some topics. We're gonna go through and find some things out, very practical things on what Proverbs has to say about daily life, talk about character traits. We're gonna talk about good business practices. Perhaps, we're gonna talk about eating and drinking habits. Book of Proverbs speaks to these things. Sexual purity, how to watch out for the adulterous or the sexual tempter that will come in your life. The Book of Proverbs has a great deal to say about this. Work ethic, being a disciplined, hard-working person. Speech patterns, what to say and what not to say, when to speak and when to be silent. Handling money and wealth, controlling your emotions, raising your children, avoiding trouble spots, common trouble spots in people's lives, secrets to a blessed marriage. So all of that next week and then the following, we're gonna look at... No, no. We'll take one top. Alright, we're gonna zero in and we're gonna go through and find the Proverbs that speak to those. We're gonna try to plumb the depths of the wisdom of God so that we can acquire a disciplined and prudent life. So please come next week, come with an open heart, come with the fear of the Lord and let's be instructed by God. Let's close in prayer. Is there anything else, Bill? Alright. I'm gonna close in prayer. Heavenly Father, we do thank you for the time we've had to look at your word tonight. Thank you for the Book of Proverbs and the things we're gonna learn. But Father, tonight, we just wanted to remind ourselves who wisdom is, not so much what wisdom is but who wisdom is, and the wisdom is Jesus Christ. And we thank you that by faith in Christ, we have received wisdom from God, our righteousness, Jesus. And we have been given the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom, the beginning of knowledge. Father, I pray for my brothers and sisters here and for myself, that we might hear what you have to say, not be like the fool that despises knowledge, but rather one who is teachable, one who can learn and grow in wisdom. Father, we pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen. Good night.
All Black Lives Matter came on my radar last week after it was painted down the center of Hollywood Blvd here in Los Angeles. The issue on the table is that black queer people in this country have been hit twice. Being black and queer in America can be seen as a double threat and not necessarily in a good way. Many black members of the LGBTQ+ community feel like a people without a country. They experience racism within the LGTBTQ+ community and they experience prejudice and homophobia from straight, cisgender members of the black community. And now that the George Floyd protests and Pride month are erupting at the same time, where do our Queer black people stand? How do you know which identifier to fight for first? Black or Queer? This week, the IRSPNSBL Crew will uncover a few truths. First truth is under the most extreme of circumstances would our guy, Great Value Diddy, let a Cabana Boy save him or drown?! You have to listen to the scenario though. Second truth is "dating" really is not the same for everyone regardless what the Webster Dictionary states. And boy was Mavriq shocked. We also learned that some MAGA HATTERS just do NOT get IT and regardless of their heart, and a very heated conversation with the IRSPNSBL Crew, they probably never will. And the excuses....just listen to the conversation with a friend of the show, you can even hear the blood pressure of Tina rise. And the last truth is that sex embarrassments happen and that some of us have more than other.

Today I inadvertently create some neologisms; new words. I consider myself a tidy person and at times a bit nit-picky, nitpickiness is not an official word in the Webster Dictionary but it certainly should be!

A town in New Jersey defunded their police back in 2012 and their crime has dropped by 42% since then, a student contacted Webster Dictionary saying their definition of racism isn't enough to which they agreed, and some fast facts!
What does it mean to be resilient? The Webster Dictionary says this: The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. They both sound important to us. Especially now. This week we hear thoughts from one of our 12 in 12 women who is devising a verbatim theatre project. Verbatim theatre is a form of documented theatre in which plays are constructed from the precise words spoken by people interviewed about a particular event or topic. Actor Lauri Landry’s topic is resilience. It’s a kind of arts-based research. And for Lauri, it’s a journey of self-discovery. Listen as Lauri Landry describes her creative process and discusses the benefits of our group. Click here to learn more about Twisting the Plot

The definition of love, according to Webster Dictionary, is strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. This is a basic and generic definition. It doesn't cover what love looks like from our own eyes.

But is that the same denotation and definition the bible version rides on? This episode explores the nature and kind of mercy we are being called into as believers and what it will take to attain the necessary levels of sensitivity and empathy that will results in us loving mercy.

Katrina Ruth: I'm fine not working inside of my own house. What's happening? What's happening? Why am I so dark? So good. So good. I'm drinking my super foods blend. My chocolate, my body blend, super foods blend, which by the way, is currently being shipped to our first customers. It is chocolatey as fuck. There always needs to be a chocolate element, whether it's a chocolate bread layer, or a chocolate super food drink, or a chocolate heart. Somebody send me a chocolate heart. Send me a chocolate heart shower. I need something. Do I look dark on this screen? Or am I imagining it? Katrina Ruth: Those are just regular hearts, guys. Chocolate hearts. That's what I desire. Did you share that? Jess Lewis: I'm just trying to, the wifi's [inaudible 00:01:08]. Katrina Ruth: The wifi's being a motherfucker. I'm paraphrasing. It's exactly what she said. Katrina Ruth: Hello. Hello world. Now I was tossing up between do I have a nap at 1:22 p.m., double twos, it's a very auspicious time. Okay, you gonna start a live stream as well. Thank you for making me aware. Tell me when you've shared that. Not you guys. There's a ninja in the other room, I'm just shouting directions out from here from my batman chair. From my bat chair. I have a purple sequin-y cape that I've covered the chair with to bling it up. Then I have my other cape on my lap like a blanket. You're gonna see me first. Well it's how it should be. Gabriel says he's gonna do his own live stream but he's gonna see me first. Everybody should see me first before they do anything at all. Why are you coming up as Facebook User? Okay. I don't look too dark, I look a little bit dark. Is it shared yet, or should I share it? Jess Lewis: It's shared. Katrina Ruth: Okay. Well, I would prefer to be in more brightness is what I would like, but it's a constant dilemma when I'm live streaming with the beach behind me. The question is, do I let you see me and my glowing highlighted face, it's just natural highlighter. I was born like this. Or, do I let you see the beach? If I press on me, do I become brighter? Whoops. Pressed on somebody else. See? Now I'm all brighted up and now the background's gone. Now we want the background don't we. Let's just ... Oh no. Hang on, I might have ruined the whole situation for everybody. Okay, I've got it back. It's fixed, it's glorious. It's gonna be one of these ones today guys, it could go anywhere, it could go everywhere, it could go nowhere at all. Katrina Ruth: Wait, who's doing the call to action? Me or you? Jess Lewis: Me I suppose. Katrina Ruth: You, don't tell them anything at all. We're not gonna tell you guys but shortly when I feel like it I'll tell them. Put an emoji in for them as a tease. Put a little emoji in as a tease. Do you know the one I mean? Jess Lewis: No. Katrina Ruth: She doesn't know at all. Jess Lewis: The eggplant? Katrina Ruth: Not an eggplant. What's happening, this is not a sex live stream. Everyone knows eggplants means sex. What else could they possibly mean? Why does she think I wanted to put an eggplant live streaming? They're all weird. They're even weirder than me. Katrina Ruth: How do you have the logo to the right side of the screen? The answer is that I asked for it to be on the right side 'cause it used to be in the middle above my head and then it would cut off part of my head. So I said, move it to the right, and there it is. So yeah, so I had to toss up between do I do a live stream, or do I have a nap. Because I had a bit of an adventure last night. I'll tell you some elements and not all of them. And as a result of the adventure, I had two hours sleep and I feel fucked up. But in a great way. Because when I finally went to bed at whatever ungodly time it was, I knew that I was gonna get up pretty much a minute and a half afterwards. Katrina Ruth: I said to myself, "I will wake up feeling fully rested and high vibe and I'll have an amazing day." Well, I actually feel wiped but I feel high vibe and I can have an amazing day anyway. Tiredness is just a, it's a fantasy okay. It's probably not most people's fantasy, it's an illusion, is probably the word I was going for. But I had a great adventure. I said to myself the other day I'm gonna have more adventures and it was an intention I suppose. And then last night I thought that I was going out for a quick drink. What am I talking about, you can hear what I'm talking about. This is what I'm talking about right now. Here I am talking. I thought that I was gonna go out for a quick drink and yes, that did happen. Somehow it turned into some shenanigans in a restaurant and then there was many things involved. There was many things involved. There was a tour of some of the coastal towns, there was some Jumanji. There was some artistic endeavours. It was quite the adventure. Katrina Ruth: Anyway. So I was gonna have a nap. But I didn't. Because on with the show, that's the whole story, right? Now as you might know or you might not know, but now I'll remind you and tell you, the Katrina Ruth Show is me. I am the show and if you desire to have a personal run where people follow you for your message and for who you are and maybe they even buy things from you and you get to share your art into the world, and if that is you, please shower me with emojis stickers or love hearts, you can choose. If that's your desire, then you might wanna think about releasing the idea that people are following you because of what you teach. Because they don't care. They don't give a fuck. People think that they wanna learn from me about what I teach, maybe you do, maybe you think that you do, maybe you're really like, "Excuse me, all I'm here for is the dot points," but really let's just be honest about it. You're here because you can't look away. Because the show is fascinating and magnetic, okay. I guess I better [inaudible 00:06:37] into it now. Katrina Ruth: So I am the show, this is the show. It's happening right here. Yes, exactly Gabriel, exactly. And so therefore if I went and had a nap at 1:00 p.m., then the show wouldn't be going. So I dillyed and I dallied as you do. I made myself a chocolate green smoothie. I got a triple shot long black send up for me, brought up for me by a ninja, Kat ninja. And I thought, why would I go and have a nap at 1:28 p.m. in the middle of the day, or 1:22 p.m.? Well you could if you really desired to. Nothing wrong with that actually, I have naps all the time. But it was also that thing of, am I gonna feel better in an hour from now about I had a nap, or that I created amazing fucking content? Katrina Ruth: Firstly I wanted ... Firstly, firstly, secondly, thirdly I was just still so impressed with myself at manifesting such an amazing adventure last night so quickly that I wanted to let I guess that superflow or feeling of high vibrancy seep into my content today. Well that can't very well happen if I'm not making any content 'cause I'm off there snoozing. But also, and I blogged about this this morning a little bit, it was a reminder of napping, and eating, and sleeping, and resting, and all these very surface based human activities are really not required at all. And they're not actually desired I feel when we're in the superflow lane. And when you say yes to your soul, life says yes to you. We know this, it's a fact, it's in Wikipedia. Well it's not because I made it up, it's my quote. When you say yes to your soul, life ... When I say yes to my soul, life says yes to me. Katrina Ruth: And what that means is, you become, I believe, you become more superhuman. You actually become what you're meant to be in the first place anyway. Which means you don't need to sleep as much, you don't need to eat as much, you can think quicker, move quicker, you're more creative, you're more high vibe, you're having more fun. Everything just kind of like, go, go, go, go, go, and it all just works together. You 're kinda creating the world inside of you. And that's the kind of heightened energy state I was in last night. And then this morning as well a little bit. And then I started to crash down and I was like, "Oh well, I could go have a [inaudible 00:08:52] sleep and then after that I know for sure if I had a little nap I'll be kind of in zombie mode, or I could get on and do content and choose to continue to activate the superflow. And if I would have had a sleep, I probably would have eaten lunch then had a sleep. Instead, I'm like fuck food, I'm gonna have a smoothie, I'm gonna have a coffee and I'm gonna do a live stream. Katrina Ruth: Now where I'm gonna be super contradictory though, is I'm in no way saying ... Of course I have my own emojis. Philippa, how are you possibly not aware of that? If anyone doesn't know that I have my own emojis, who do you think you're talking to? Really. I feel that that's obvious. But how you use them is you got to be on your mobile phone and you go on with other emojis are the normal people emojis. And then there's a little sticker on the inside of your comment box, blue love heart, thank you Steve. I've never seen a blue love heart before, is that your own emoji? Did you make that up? You found them, okay, there's a little sticker on the inside of your comment box. You press the sticker, you send me some ... I feel like they're possessed, sorry. They're possessed little Katrinas. You can send me a little devil Katrina, or you can send me flies across the screen. Or you can send me a 1% sign. Katrina Ruth: What was I up to? I've no idea. I don't know where I'm going with this 'cause I'm really fucking tired 'cause I was out so late like I said. But I feel that it's going somewhere important. Okay, okay I got it. We haven't got to superflow yet, which is annoying me. I haven't felt that switch flick. I don't like that. I want the switch to flick. One must flick the switch at all times. It's not gonna flick itself. Did you guys see when my team made me a meme that said flick the fucking switch baby, it's not gonna flick itself. And it was me with like a sports bra on and just looking somewhat bad ass I suppose. But to me when I saw that meme I was like, "Well, it kinda sounds like not what it's actually meant to sound like." Katrina Ruth: Anyway, back to the point, let's be very focused and very professional. Of course you could eat some fucking lunch and have a nap if that's what you wanna do. I'm not trying to suggest to you that you should never sleep or have naps. But I am suggesting to you that you think about who you really ... Okay, my mind's just got blown with those rainbow love hearts. Philippa. Now I feel triggered that Philippa just said, "Flick the clit" on my live stream and that I didn't say that. Now I feel triggered that I wasn't being as bold as what Philippa was being, or is being, or did just be. This is my live stream and I'm suppose to be the most irreverent one. You should be here now and you can be on the live stream. Maybe I should add Philippa onto the live stream if she's just gonna go around saying shit like that. Katrina Ruth: You've completely broken my train of focus. Remember who you fucking are. Remember who you are. Remember who you are. Philippa clearly knows who she fucking is, obviously. Remember who you are. Are you the sort of person when in July ... Okay, I'm super erratic today. You guys are gonna have to deal with it, 'cause I won't be here, I'll be in America til July 14 and then I'll be back here. I'll be back. Katrina Ruth: I've forgotten completely ... I'm totally done, I'm totally done, I've totally forgotten what I was saying. This is gonna be the most embarrassing live stream in the history of time. But the whole point is on with the show, this is it. If this is the show then you're gonna have to deal with it. This is how the show's turning up today. The show didn't have much sleep, she's kinda all over the place, she had an epic awesome night and she can't think about anything. Her brain is fried. That's what's happening with the show. Talk amongst yourselves. Katrina Ruth: Jess, I need some content inspiration. I'm dying, I'm bombing out on my own live stream. Okay, I'll be here from the 19th to the 23rd. Somebody's gonna need to save me. Give me a talking point. Over. As you were. I'll think of something. The superflow will click in anyway. I'm giving you a perfect live demonstration right now of how you can create content even when the content is about abso-fucking-lutely nothing. And yet miraculously somehow people are still watching. I don't understand. They love me. They love me, they really love me. I don't think I just got Jim Carrey superflow activated into my mind. Jess Lewis: How to push through- Katrina Ruth: Can we watch The Mask? Jess Lewis: ... tide? Katrina Ruth: How to push through? You just push. You just get your hands and you back it up like it's hard. I don't know what that means. You just put your hands on it's ass and you just push it. What else have you got? I answered that question already. Philippa is inviting herself to stay here with me. Of course she is. I like it when people ... I'm gonna say something that's weird and it's not sexual about Philippa just so that we're all clear. But you reminding me of, like I put a post up the other week like I really love it when a man who knows that he can, tells you what's gonna happen. Or he tells you that he's the boss or in charge. I had to be careful about how I worded that post 'cause I wasn't gonna write I just like it when a man tells me what to do. That's not in a general sense. Jess Lewis: In bed, yes. Katrina Ruth: No, that's not what I meant in bed. But sure in bed, of course. I didn't even mean it though. I meant like being like, I'm the man or I'm the dominant one in a general manly sense with an eau de man. Jess Lewis: Eau de man. Katrina Ruth: I like the smell of their skin. Jess Lewis: So it is a sweaty man. Katrina Ruth: Well, if it's a man that you are attracted to, then the sweat usually smells really good. I'm not even talking to anybody. There's no one over there. I'm just making it all up. I'm just imagining a character. So yes, Philippa's reminding me of when a man who knows that he can, just tells me what's gonna happen. And then I'm like, "Oh, okay." I know didn't even mean sexually. But of course sexually. But I didn't even mean that. I just meant in a general sense, take charge of me. It's similar to the meme that I put up. What's happening with your comments today, Steve? Are you drinking during the day? What's going on there? You're suddenly going next level engaged, I feel like somebody's hacked your Facebook or you're drinking. Is Matt on your Facebook right now? Is that's what's happening? And he's just sending a million comments. The pheromones, everybody loves a good pheromone. There's nothing better than a good pheromone. I can imagine it right now. The essence. So yeah, Philippa is the same as the men who tell me that they're in charge. I didn't mean as a whole bevvy of them. It came out the wrong way. Katrina Ruth: Philippa just tells me what's happening, and I like it when people do that. But you have to know who you are. You have to know who you are if you're gonna tell me what's happening, you're gonna tell me what's happening? Who's gonna tell this bitch what's happening? Not many people. But some people who know who they are can get away with that. Philippa can maybe get away with that. Nobody's there at all. Philippa can get away with it, she's already proven that she can get away with it. Doesn't mean all y'all, I'm made in America now. Doesn't mean all the rest of you all can get away with it. You know if you can or if you can't. You have to vote for yourself. Do you back yourself and believe yourself enough to imagine that you can get away with telling me what to do? Katrina Ruth: That's a dangerous little line to walk down isn't it? I'd like to see who's willing to back themselves with that. Put a comment in, let's see who you are. I'll tell you yes or no. Or maybe I won't at all, maybe I'll just observe who's brave enough to answer this question. Because no, not the whole internet can just tell me that they're gonna come and stay at my house that's not actually a thing. But certain people can. And it's the same as the man thing. No, not any man can walk around and just tell me what's up and what's happening. But if they know that they can, then they should. And I'll like it a lot. Katrina Ruth: What were we up to? Back on topic. I had a little wardrobe dilemma today. I guess I could tell you about that. I feel like since I have situations here, two of them. Two situations that people might need to see or know about, that I should be displaying the situations at all time and now I'm wearing like a really regular baggy top but it's a cool top. And so that was a bit of a dilemma. It's not that interesting. I don't have anything to say. Okay, Thea says she's not there yet, Camilla says yes. What's on my shirt? Says religion. I dunno. It's from Religion in Bali, which is amazing. Angela can sit on the one couch as long as she has a tripod, a bottle of wine and not no ... You can have emails on the phone, you can have no notifications on the phone. No notifications on the phone. Katrina Ruth: What else? Here's a cool thing, right? You can literally just sit and chill. Like I'm just chilling. Instead of having a nap, I'm just chilling with you guys. I'm talking about abso-fucking-lutely nothing. I feel like we should make Jess get on the live stream 'cause I'm being super boring. But yet people are still staying here and watching. I'm proving so many points right now about content. People who don't like me would be saying I'm proving the point that I have nothing to say about anything. I need another talking point. You guys are gonna have to give me one. In the end, it just comes down to are you willing to be the person who gets on with it. Katrina Ruth: Okay, Philippa are you writing these things down in advance? Not only did she say flick the clit on my live stream, she now says she needs to touch the boobs. Hence, she needs to come there. Well, most of the women who I know have touched the boobs already. Linda just went straight in there. She's like, "Let's see them," so I took them out and she was just like, "Oh yeah." She started grabbing them literally. It was quite amusing. Beautiful view, yes it is. I'm sorry I'm being so boring. The point that I'm trying to make is you can be a show even when you're a boring show. That's the reality. You can talk about what you love. Right now what I'm loving is my coffee, I'm loving this cape that's on my lap, I'm loving the high vibery of my life. I'm loving the adventure that I had last night. I can't tell you all the details to that. You have to imagine them to yourself. Katrina Ruth: Oh, thank you Lakisha, I'm loving that I'm doing comedy skits now. Filmed that a while ago. I was too embarrassed to post it. You know, the one about likes versus love. I didn't wanna post it. 'Cause then I was all like [inaudible 00:19:23] people were gonna think that's about them and it is. So then I hesitated to post it for a while. And then I did it anyway 'cause I don't let my own bullshit be given my message. When someone else is doing something similar to what you're selling, how do you not compare yourself. Katrina Ruth: Oh that's an amazing question and by the way on a side note, thank you Lee, I appreciate it. Okay, okay I feel like we just kicked the switch. It wasn't the clit switch, just keep calm about that over there in New Zealand or wherever you are at. It was the superflow switch. Angela just flicked the superflow switch, not gonna flick itself. How you flick the superflow switch is you show the fuck up anyway when you're being boring as fuck. Drop the Empress details now because I'm gonna forget about otherwise. If you want ... By the way, by the way, by the way, enough with this coaching bullshit. We all know that if you resonate with me and you see an element in yourself in me, possibly the weirder parts mainly, then it's not about how do I make money as a coach online. And probably you've done that thing of going I'm never gonna coach again, I'm done with coaching. Who's done that? Katrina Ruth: Every time a client says that to me I'm like, yeah, we'll see about that. You're not done with coaching, you just haven't given yourself permission to do it the way you wanna do it. Coaching, mentoring, it's one teeny tiny pocket. But, who we are is you can't even put it into words. But if you did you would say magnetic as fuck and brilliant in all its glory, and you are the fucking show and the coaching element is just one part of it. And what it's about in order for you to get your message out there, and in order to gain the following, the fame, the fortune that you desire is claiming your rightful place from an energetic point of view in terms of when are people gonna follow you if you're exactly the reason that Lee just said, the energy. 'Cause of not what you sell, not what you teach and the comparison thing I'll get to in a moment 'cause this is relevant to this as well. I'm totally talking like I've no clue what I'm on about by the way. I'm listening to my own words right now and I'm like, I sound like I'm drunk and I'm not. Katrina Ruth: But I'm gonna persevere and keep going. I do not feel superflow, I just lost the superflow again. But I'm still demonstrating that you can show up and do the content anyhow. In Empress, which is my four week one-on-one. It begins in T-minus 10 days. I don't know what's the T for anyway. It begins in Monday the 25th of June, minus 10 days. So no, it begins in 10 days. That would be today. It begins on Monday, the 25th of June. Four weeks one-on-one with me. What we're doing is unleashing all the madness and the mayhem and the energy. I don't feel like I'm flying but I'm pushing through. I'm wading through the quicksand right now. I'm staying focused, I'm not at all focused. My head is as scattered as anything. I kinda wanna go upstairs and have a sleep. But I'm here because something inside of me told me to be here. So when I say yes to could, life says yes to me. So I'm just gonna do it. I'm just gonna push through and do it. Katrina Ruth: And it is part of what I teach, and it is part of what Empress is about, and it is part of what building a following online and a personal brand is about. Who's correcting people's grammar in there? Is somebody correcting people's grammar in the comments? Is that's what's happening? You can't correct my grammar 'cause I'm talking aloud. I mean you can't correct my Y-O-U-'R-E versus your. So what I wanna do, what I'm gonna do, what I am doing is working with 20 badasses, 20 new amazing bad ass one-on-one clients who know that they were born to impact their energy. And it's about the Empress energy. It's about their revolutionary fucking leader energy. It's about the queen energy but it's even more than that, which is why it's Empress. Katrina Ruth: Put 25 empress emojis in now please. Did you catch that? Jess Lewis: We're up to 25. Katrina Ruth: 25. Jess Lewis: Crowns. Katrina Ruth: Put 25 empress emojis in. The actual empress emoji. Jess Lewis: Diamond. Katrina Ruth: Empress. No, the one that looks like a little empress. There's an actual empress emoji. Do you know it? Jess Lewis: I do know it. Katrina Ruth: Why is there a bunny rabbit here? An empress emoji. Jess Lewis: [inaudible 00:23:51] Katrina Ruth: It's got a blond head like me and it looks like an empress because it's me. You're gonna put 25 of them in now. The 25 represents one of them is Chandra who's already signed up, several other ... Oh hang on. Do you know the one I mean? It's not always it, it's an empress. Jess Lewis: Is that an elf? Katrina Ruth: It's not an elf, it's an empress. I just put one of them in. Put 25 of them in now. Lakisha's put 25 in. Is that 25? Somebody count. Let's make sure this is being done properly. Mine looks evil. Anyway, the empress emojis represent the empresses who are coming in plus I dunno, maybe the ninjas are the other five. Me and four ninjas can be the other five. 'Cause 20 amazing empresses are gonna be working with me one-on-one starting July, not July, June 25. It is probably the most bizarre as fuck amazing transformative one-on-one programme I've ever created that's not about online marketing, right? It's completely a whole different thing. Katrina Ruth: It is about impacting with your energy, selling with your energy, calling in the people with your energy, having the creative downloads and the flow and the soul shifts coming through from your energy. Details are in the pinned comment. That is for those who know that they're not just here to be a coach. That is for those who know that they are the fucking show. That they're suppose to be showing up, turning up, being up, lit up as fuck, and people follow you because you are the show. Read that comment and message me if you want details. Message me on my personal page. Katrina Ruth: Okay now, Angela had asked a question ... I am so fucking certain that your Facebook has been hacked right now, Steve. "Cause I've never seen you with this many comments. What's happening? You're gonna need to send me a voicemail to prove that it's you. And why are these empress emojis brown haired, what's happening there? We need blond head ones. I require a voice message 'cause otherwise I feel like somebody in China has taken over your Facebook, or its mail. Okay. Angela had asked a question about comparison. Well, here's the reality, right? And I feel like this is obvious and everybody knows the answer already. There we go, blond emoji, blond empress emoji. Oh man, I just figured out how to get my face in the live stream and the beach. I'm a technological genius. I'm like an engineer, I'm like a high IQ engineer. I'm exactly like a high IQ engineer 'cause my father is a high IQ engineer and I'm quite similar to him. He's a pilot now, but he's an engineer as well. So I actually am a high IQ engineer, it's official. It's in the blood. Katrina Ruth: There's no comparison, who said something about comparison? Why was there a question about comparison? What did it say? Now what I say about that is, you gotta go into your boldness. You gotta go into you're audacity. You gotta go into your audacity about the comparison odysseys thingy. Ask another question, someone 'cause I could answer some questions. So Angela would say when someone else is doing something similar to what you are selling, or something like that, then how engineer ... I say in the official properly Webster Dictionary audio-performed by [inaudible 00:27:16]. You gotta go into your audacity. You gotta go into it. You gotta go deep into the audacity. Things should always be deep, very fucking deep. Philippa knows all about it. I'm just gonna go serve some of them back at you since you took over my live stream a little bit. They should always be deep. Extraordinarily deep. And if you're gonna go into audacity, it should be like so deep that it comes out the other side. It doesn't sound ideal, I take it back, I retract, retract, retract. Have some chocolate smoothie. It's a greens powder. Super greens. Katrina Ruth: Which means, nobody can fucking compare because no matter how hard somebody tries, no matter how hard somebody tries to be me, please. Good fucking luck. There is no way, I'm sorry, you can try to like ... I know some of you dyed your hair red, that was a nice effort, it was quite fun for me to giggle about when I then changed it to blond with the best colorist in the world. And it changed from full on red to blond in one session. Okay, I think it was a nine hour session, but still. And then all the red-headed people had just changed to red were screwed. Well, I guess they could have changed again. But just when people think that they're trying to catch up with me and they're like, "Oh okay, see what she's doing, let me take some notes, let me get some Cliff Notes about that. Let me make it into a PDF document so that I don't forget." Just when you think you've figured out what I'm doing, I'm already 25 fucking steps ahead of you. Katrina Ruth: Oh, you think I'm over here, I'm already there. You try to catch up there, I'm back here again. You try to get me over here, I'm just sitting back here having a nap and a coffee. And you just run around all over the place looking like a headless chick, crazy. So no matter how hard you try, I won. I already won. I am the winner of being the Katrina Ruth Show. It is what it is, and that's all it is. And that's how I feel about the comparison question. You can try as hard as you like, you're never gonna be ... You could even get yourself a fabulous cape like this one, this is an amazing cape. Look at it. It's a great blankety cape. You can wear it either way. You've seen the cape. I wear the cape on the empress banner that's on my Facebook. It looks amazing. Which way do you like it better? I'm gonna put it on now. Katrina Ruth: The only problem is that when I wear the cape on the live stream, it overheats me a little bit. And then I get sweaty. I don't like it that way. It looks like an evil fish scale. Turn it the other way. So we just be in flow and do our souls calling and we just know the money is coming. The money is a decision. What a great comment slash half question, comment, question by Jacqueline. The money is a decision. I live streamed about this yesterday actually. I did a two hour live stream of [inaudible 00:30:03] it always manages to go for two hours. I think it was only an hour 55. We cut it short with a short snack sized version. One hour, 55 minutes. And somebody asked that same question and we spoke about that. So you could watch that. It's only a couple more hours out of your day. But the short answer is, you decide. The money is a decision. Like I decided, and I gonna make myself some lunch and then have a nap, or I'm gonna make super food green smoothie and do a live stream. Katrina Ruth: There's no emotion around it, it's not like is this smoothie available to me? Am I good enough, am I worthy for this smoothie? Did I do what it takes, do I have what it takes? Can I receive this? Can I maintain it if I keep it? Its just a motherfucking decision. So you make the damn smoothie and you have the smoothie, or you order one, you get a ninja to bring you one. You get them to bring you a coffee. That's money. That's the whole money story explained to you. Katrina Ruth: Why is people messaging me right now? Don't message me when I'm on a live stream. I see them messaging over there in the Facebook inbox. That's the money situation sorted. Do I look like little Purple Riding Hood? Yes, you decide to allow yourself to be rich. That's exactly right. You know I made a quote image that says exactly that. It's one of my quote memes that we're gonna put on Instagram. Look at me, I look so snuggly, anybody would wanna give me a cuddle right now. You decide to be rich. You decide that you're gonna make money. And then you just ... Right, I'm stuck. Then you just ... oh my goodness, the person who's messaging me just wrote, oops, sorry. Are they listening to me? I was just being a smart ass. You're allowed to message me while I'm on the live stream. But if you just said sorry about that, then it's fine. Katrina Ruth: So you do just decide. But you can't walk around and decide on ... Well you could, depends on your level of faith and belief. But lets say you're like, "Okay, cool Kat. Let me test out your little theory there. I'm gonna decide that I now make a million dollars per month," for example. Only Money Honey is one of the best programmes I've ever done. And the title of that programme came from because I had a massive wake up call around realising that I'd been getting so emotionally attached to money and to make it into a big deal like, "Oh my god, it's so hard to combine, am I good enough and am I worthy," all the stuff I just said about the smoothie. And then I just had like this breakthrough realisation, which was the product of freaking years of doing the inner work and figuring shit out and continually aligning myself day-by-day to where I would receive more. And the breakthrough was, holy shit, it's only money. It's like oxygen, it's everywhere. Breathe it in don't breathe it in, whatever. But why would you not breathe it in or you might die. Okay, we might not die without money. But you get what I mean, right? Katrina Ruth: It is such an amazing programme. It's from 2014 I believe but I'm so proud of it. It stands the test of time as they all do. But that one it would be ... If I had to identify like my top five programmes, surely that one would have to be in the top five I would say. And that was the realisation for me. But if you then were like, Okay, I'm gonna just decide that now I make a million dollars a month and that's just how it is, Jess, you can definitely get some good screen shots of me now because I'm wrapped snuggly in my cape. Snuggly. I don't know, what would I use this screenshots for though. Maybe not. Has she left? Did you leave? Jess Lewis: No. Katrina Ruth: Okay. So then you can't just be ... Well you can, depends on your faith. But don't try and test me out by saying, "Oh now I just decide that I make a million bucks a month," or a year, or whatever else. I'm not freezing at all, I've got a cape wrapped around me. Not at all freezing. You can't just say that and expect it to fucking work if you don't have that level of belief. So what you would do is, you would ask well, to what level am I capable of believing right now? How can I stretch just a little bit beyond what I feel is available or possible for me. And then you begin to align yourself to that. You align yourself piece by piece by piece by piece by piece in that direction. What does that mean? It means that you continue to look daily at, well if it was that simple, and I just now received that money because I just fucking decided it and it's like ordering something from a restaurant, of course I get it. Katrina Ruth: If it was that simple, then what would my thoughts be, what would my feelings be, what would my emotions be? Am I freezing for other people as well, tell me. And what would my aligned actions be? And then you do it. You just fucking do it. You do the best that you can for that day and you release the outcome. Why is it freezing, why? Nobody's answering me. It's very upsetting. You just do the best that you can for the day. You decide and choose it. Of course you're gonna get that result straight away this day, this month, this year, this now. And so you act accordingly and then you fucking release it. You release it. Freezing, not freezing, well, some of you must have your energy fields all fucked up and others don't. That's all I can say about that. So then like yesterday for example I was giving my daughter a little smack down on this exact topic. 'Cause she wasn't to do a aerial cartwheel, which is a cartwheel with no hands. She's nearly nailed it. She's very good at her gymnastics.she just got graduated to the next level and only two people in her whole class got graduated two days ago she's very happy about it. Katrina Ruth: So she's practising doing no hands cartwheels and then she was getting herself into a royal mess and sulked about it at the playground yesterday. And I'm not the most empathetic of mothers. I was like, "Listen, harden the fuck up." I didn't say fuck, I said, "Listen, you need to harden' up. Stop crying about it. That's not gonna help it at all. Here's what you do." And I told her how to believe in yourself. I tried to make her live stream with me about it and she refused. She's quite the diva. So I'll try and reenact it for you. So I was like, "This is how you do it. You go out there to do your cartwheel, your aerials and you decide you will do it today." She's like, she asked me, "Do you believe that I can do it today?" I'm like, "I do, I do believe that it's possible that you can do it today. You need to believe that you can do it today. So when you go out there now to do that," and I was sitting there having a picnic just chilling and eating while she was working out. I like to see my children working hard and sweating while I sit back. Or it can go the other way. Either way is fine. Katrina Ruth: So ib said to her, "You have to believe. You have to fully believe that you're doing this today. And ten at the same time though, you've gotta be totally okay with if you spend the next hour trying to do it or however long and then it doesn't happen, you gotta be totally okay with that and then tomorrow you've gotta get up again and believe again that this is the day I am doing it today, I will do it today, nothing is gonna stop me. Of course it's happening today and so I'm going in with that attitude and you do whatever you can as best as you can for the time that you have available for that day with full belief that of course it's gonna happen that day. And if it doesn't, you get up the next fucking day and you do it again." And then she's like, "but I can't do it tomorrow because," then she listed out her whole busy schedule for me which was happening today. Katrina Ruth: And I'm like, "Okay I didn't technically mean it has to be the ... Okay, then the next day after that." And then she was trying and then ... Well, she kept not quite getting it, right? I mean it's a cartwheel with no hands. She'd only been practising for like a week as well. She's very impatient. I have no idea where she got it from. So then she starts getting grumpy though. She was like not crying but kind of getting ... She was getting super frustrated and shitty about it. I was like, "Listen to me. Drop that attitude right now." Which this is how I was speaking to her as well. She wants to be the best. She wants to like practise all freaking day and get the results. You're gonna have to learn what it takes. It is what it is. Katrina Ruth: So I said, "Listen to me. You're gonna need to drop that attitude right now. As soon as you start to get frustrated and upset about it and you're getting grumpy, then you're immediately making it that you're not gonna be able to do it today. You're switching off," I didn't say abundance, but it's the same thing, right? So those of you who are out there, and you're hustling and you're showing up and you're like of course I'm gonna have million dollar business, of course I'll make this much money. And then you're like, I'm doing the inner work and I'm doing the actions and the beliefs and the emotions and yeah the practical side as well. And I believe, I believe. Are you or are you not getting shitty when you don't get a result? are you having a little sulk? are you being like a child just stamping their foot, "This is not working?" That's normal and you're gonna have to drop that attitude. Katrina Ruth: Because the second that you go into that attitude of this is shitty, this is not working, what's wrong with me, why can't I do this, other people are better than me, all that stuff, that immediately dials down abundance. You turn off the abundance switch, you flick the switch back off and not in a good way at all. So you've got to be in an expanded energy and in an everything is perfect and okay and I'm totally fine energy in order to receive. Who knows that you're not gonna receive when you're an energy of like, "Waa, why is this not working, and why is everyone better than me?" Katrina Ruth: So as I said, it's normal to have those responses, but hello, did we come here for normal? No we fucking did not come here for normal. So why would you be acting so normal? Very boring of you if you think about it. So it's a discipline is what I'm saying. It's a motherfucking discipline to be in abundance mindset and a manifestation mindset. It's a choice to drop the attitude. It's a choice to drop the drama. Yeah, you can still feel it, I don't mean I don't feel that shit if something doesn't work out the way that I want it to in any area of my life. I might have a little temper tantrum for a second in time, but I'm very conscious of this ship because I've been doing what I'm doing, teaching what I teach for so long now, I know how it works, I know how I'm receiving a manifestation works so I notice myself doing it and it's literally like, let it go. It is what it is and that's all it is. It's one of my favourite sayings. No matter what. When my kids are grumping about something or anybody is or something goes wrong or doesn't work, I always am like, it is what it is. Katrina Ruth: And then Alyssa my eight year old who will finish it off for me and she goes, "And that's all it is." I'm like, "Exactly. It is what it is and that's all it is. So what's the point of getting shitty about it? Go back in, believe that you're gonna do it today." And she's like, "Mommy, mommy, do you think that I'm really gonna do it today?" I'm like, "Yeah, I believe that you can. And if you don't, so what. You get up and you believe it again the next day." That's how it's done. And if it's too hard, it's too challenging, you need to have a cry about it, you need to get a blanky and a freaking hot chocolate with some marshmallows, then too bad, you don't get to be this life, you don't get to be this life. You don't get to live that life. You gotta fix your attitude if you wanna be successful. It is what it is and that's all it is. Katrina Ruth: Alright. What time are we up to? I feel like I said many things about many things and hopefully some of them hit home. I think that last bit was quite good. I think we could get some good screen shots of me waving around my cape here. I like to get some good screen shots for my live streams. I feel like my sectional belief was powerful. You should listen to it again. You should think about where you need to maybe drop the attitude and choose to believe. I think I need wings. Can you order me some wings? Jess Lewis: Yeah. Katrina Ruth: Yeah. She said yeah. Of course she did. I'm gonna get ... No I'm not gonna tell you, it's a secret. I definitely need some wings. Sometimes you just need some wings. But I can use this cape in the meantime. You need to have a look at ... We could all have a look at where we're acting like a grumpy child stamping its foot. It's okay, you're allowed to be human. But at some point if you wanna be freaking extraordinary in your outcomes I guess you're gonna have to start acting like that. You're gonna have to choose to be strong enough to put the drama aside to go within, within, all the way within and to release whatever needs to come out into the atmosphere. Which is a next level badass version of you. Katrina Ruth: Empress is here. Four weeks one-on-one with me. I'm gonna tell you about it a little bit. Claim your rightful place now. For women are unapologetically born for more. Begins June 25 details are in the pinned comment. You wanna message me about this if you're willing and ready to step up. You gotta be willing. You can't just say that you know you meant to, you've gotta also be willing. Empress claim your rightful place now. For those who are born for more, born for exceptional, born for extraordinary and not of this world. Read the rest. Read it in the pinned comment. Message me on my personal page. Tell me something amazing. Leave me a comment and I don't even know what else I'm gonna say. Okay. Any final thoughts? Jess Lewis: Who me? Katrina Ruth: Yes. Jess Lewis: Life is now, press play. Katrina Ruth: She said life is now, press play. Very uncreative. Think of something else. Jess Lewis: I can play any tune you like. Katrina Ruth: She said flick the clit switch. I'm paraphrasing. She said she needs to tune in. She said you need to tune into yourself. I changed it to flick the clit switch. How rude. Alright. Life is now, press the motherfucking play. Read the Empress comment here below. Read all about it. I'm sorry I was so all over the place. I'm not sorry at all. It is what it is, just deal with it. It is what it is and that's all it is. This is the Katrina Ruth Show, it's happening right here. I am the show. Wanna be your show? Wanna step into your Empress power, into your Empress energy, into your Empress environment, into all of it? Message me ... Really going through ... Katrina Ruth: I'm breaking down right now. 6,000 dollar bonus you might have just not had many sections of wifi broke down. So much on the bad assery. It is an incredible fucking life changing four weeks. I've run it one time before. The results and the power, and the shifts that come through from that honestly just blew me away. So I haven't done the best explanation of it today but I have a read of what's in there if you feel that might be time to step up and work with me one-on-one if that's in anyway intriguing you or speaking to your soul, then have a little read, send me a message and I'll send you a more detailed overview of what's actually going on. I'll probably audio it. We'll talk, we'll figure it out. We'll do all the things. We'll create all the things, you will be the empress who you'll want to be. Have an amazing epic rest of the day. On behalf of Jess Lewis, Kat ninja, flick the clit switch, and from me, life is now. Press fucking play.
Lance Scoular Show Notes Lance Scoular, AKA The Savvy Navigator, has been involved in International Trade and Transport for 50 years; In 2008, Lance started receiving invitations from students in his classes to connect with them on both Facebook and LinkedIn. Over the last nine years, he has developed and expanded his social media networks exponentially (especially LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and beBee) and those of a select group of clients in a variety of sectors, both locally and globally. The results have been significant. Lance is now in the process of doing a 180-degree business pivot, refocussing away from Social Media Consulting, back to what he does best, International Trade and Transport Training. He is soon to launch an online course “Import Export Made Easy” in video and audio as well as the “Import Export Made Easy” Podcast. Lance’s career I started my business back in the early 1970s as a shipping supervisor in what is now known as Baxter International, a fortune 500 company. In 1976, I completed my studies at TAFE, which is the Technical And Further Education College in Australia, and I passed the exams of the Australian customs services. I took two weeks holiday from the company I was working in to door-knock local businesses in my area to see if I could find people who were dealing with exporting and importing that are interested in my services. I gained a few clients and resigned from the company. Most of my marketing was door knocking, and I used direct mail, and telemarketing with the Australian Yellow Pages. Import-Export is a very big deal in Australia. Most passionate about Today, I’m pivoting. Back in 2009, I got very involved in social media. I was running an Import Export course, and I was getting invitations from my students to connect with them on Facebook and LinkedIn. In the beginning, I didn’t understand what they wanted from me, but once I Googled it, I got very interested in the business potential of these social networks. As we mentioned before, Australia was very isolated from the rest of the world, the Internet and social media, in particular, have changed that. In 2009, I decided to start helping people to use social media with no connection to import or export. (I still taught the import and export courses, but the number of courses dropped during those years.) And today, I’m pivoting since I just recently realized that I could help many businesses all over the world with my knowledge and expertise in Import and Export, so I’m about to launch my first online Import-Export course. The exciting thing is that I’m going to use my wide network of social media connections that I built over the last nine years to promote my course. Lance’s best advice about approaching customers The definition of a customer back in the 70s was someone who buys goods or services. I came across a marketing strategist, Sean D’Souza who wrote a book called, The Brain Audit, about why customers buy, and in that book, he talked about his concept of a client. He relates to Webster Dictionary which says, ‘If you are a service provider, the client is someone you should care for, someone who comes under your protection, and someone you should guide.’ I believe in the concept of care, protection, and guidance for your clients. Biggest failure with a customer Well, I’ve had failures… like most of the guests in your show. It’s a learning situation. Back in 2007 and 2008, I was running my own course, but I was also asked to be a guest presenter at the Sydney Community College, two courses for young entrepreneurs. One for young people that were thinking of becoming entrepreneurs and another one for those who are already entrepreneurs. On one night, I was asked by the course’s facilitator to share one of my business stories with the entrepreneurs. Some of the entrepreneurs were doing great things, and I didn’t want to...
In this episode of More Than Good Food, we explore the concept of Happiness. In said happiness is one of the pillars of health. She also said that happiness is a choice - a controversial statement for some. Webster Dictionary defines happiness as a state of being happy, which doesn't really say much of anything, in my opinion. However "happy" is defined as feeling or showing pleasure or contentment. What does that mean in terms of living a healthy life? In a society of social media, where we are expected to show ourselves at our best, what does happiness really mean? Is it a fleeting sensation of pleasure, and where does contentment fit into it? These are the questions that came to mind, and that I posed to Caitlin McCarthy. Get the full show notes at

Podcast from Fr. Luke Mary Fletcher, CFR. According to Webster Dictionary "surreal" was the word of 2016. It is used in the sense of responding to something bad that seems like a nightmare. 2017 needs to be a year of encountering the "real" - encountering God and others. Listen to learn more!

Dealing with deadlines, what type of designer are you? Before I get into dealing with deadlines let me first define what a deadline is. According to Webster Dictionary a deadline is a date or time when something must be finished : the last day, hour, or minute that something will be accepted. I know I didn’t really need to give you the definition of a deadline. You’re a graphic designer, you know all too well what a deadline is. But what I really wanted to touch on is not what a deadline is, but instead, how a deadline comes to be. What I’m getting at is, who decided that the project you are working on needs to be done at a specific time? Did your client tell you? Or, did you tell the client? One of the biggest problems I’ve encountered, especially amongst newer or inexperienced graphic designers is their mistaking a client’s enthusiasm as a desire to have the job done quickly and then self impose a deadline. When I worked in the design department at a commercial printer our Production Coordinator did this all the time. I would be discussing a new project with a client, getting all the specs and details, and at the end of the conversation the client would ask something like “how soon before I see a proof?”. My Production Coordinator automatically interpreted this as “the client needs this in a rush” and would tell him a proof would be ready within a day or two, forcing the design department to rush on the project. What was maddening is oftentimes the client would respond to this by saying something like “wow, I wasn’t expecting it that fast. I thought it would take at least two weeks but 2 days is great!” As I said maddening. What’s even more maddening is that I’ve seen this happen over and over again. Just because a client asks when, or how soon they can see a proof doesn’t mean they are in a rush to get it. Let the client dictate the actual deadline if there is one instead of assigning one yourself. Setting interim deadlines. Once you have a true deadline assigned to the project. You’ll need to do some backtracking to figure out what YOUR actual deadline is. Let’s say you’re designing a brochure that your client needs for a trade show at the end of the month. There are several factors to keep in mind; Where is the trade show? Will the client need time to ship the brochures? How long will it take to print? Contact the printer as soon as you get the job. They'll give you a deadline to submit your files by in order to print, trim, fold, bind and package the brochures on time. How long will revisions take after the client reviews the initial proof? How long will the client require after receiving the proof before sending those revisions? Finally, add in some padding for anything unforeseen that may delay the project. By calculating all of these things you’ll be able to determine your own deadline for submitting a proof to the client. Now what? Now that you have your deadline, how will you go about working on the project? Dealing with deadlines is all about balance. If you can't learn that balance you will forever struggle between doing the job well and getting it done on time. Imagine you're sitting down for a holiday feast surrounded by friends and family. A very large plate of delicious looking food is placed in front of you. Maybe there's turkey, and ham, mashed potatoes, some stuffing, steamed vegetables, cranberry sauce, pasta salad, coleslaw and maybe even some home made meatballs, the ones that only grandma can make. Everything looks so good and you can't wait to dig in. But there's so much on your plate and you're not sure you can eat all of it. So what do you do? Do you make your way around your plate sampling everything until you're full? Do you pick a little of this and a little of that, leaving your favourite part for last so you can eat it all and savour the taste? Or, do you immediately dive into your favourite just in case you run out of room? After all, you wouldn't want to leave that delicious morsel on the plate because you're too full. How you decide to eat your meal all depends on what type of person you are. The analogy may be a little slim, but dealing with deadlines isn't much different. When it comes to dealing with deadlines there are really only three kinds of graphic designers. The Racers: Designers who tackle the project right away and try to get it done as quick as possible with lots of time to spare, and then move on to the next one. The Coasters: Designers who work on the project slowly but diligently, in little chunks from the time it's assigned until the deadline arrives. The Slackers: Designers who wait until the deadline is almost upon them before finally starting. In this case, slacker doesn't mean lazy. More like someone who is often viewed as a procrastinator. Now, there are many arguments as to which method is best, but what it really comes down to is you, the designer, and how you handle the pressure of dealing with deadlines. Now I want to give you my own personal opinion on these three types of people. I know My opinion can be wrong, but this is the way I see it. The Racers, those who tackle the project as soon as they get it are doing themselves a disservice. First off, they are not spending enough time thinking about the project before starting their design. Because of this, I feel they are not putting out their best possible work. The design they come up with may be spectacular, but think of how much better they could have made it if they had spent more time on it. Now obviously with more time left before the deadline they could go back and revisit and expand on their design. But chances are they've already moved onto the next project and have put this one out mind. The Coasters, those who deals with deadlines by working on the design steadily but in chunks. These designers are also doing themselves a disservice. Sure this method allows them to work diligently on the project and not feel the pressure of the deadline looming over them. But by breaking up their time this way they are constantly disconnecting themselves from the project, splitting their focus between different design projects which could hurt their overall vision and design. By now I'm sure you've managed to guess what type of designer I am. I truely believe that The Slacker, the designer who waits until the deadline is almost upon them before starting is the one producing the best work. Let me tell you why... You're a creative person. Obviously, you wouldn't be in the graphic design profession if you weren't. That creativity means you are able to visualize things in your mind. Play with layouts, fonts, colours and everything else, all within the confines of your head long before putting those visions to paper or pixels. You know what I mean. Just think of those phone calls you get from clients describing a project to you. If you're like me, you start visualizing in your head how the project will look even before the client finishes describing it. It may not be what the final design turns out to be, but there's definitely something brewing in your head. By the time you hang up the phone you already have a good idea of where you're going to start. Of course all three types of designers start out this way which is to be expected. It's what they do afterwards that separates them. The Racer starts right away developing that idea and doesn't alway explore other possibilities. The Coaster starts developing their idea and then comes back to it later. They may have some revalations along the way, but they're mostly tackling the problem knowing they've already taken some steps along a certain path and their more inclined to remain upon it. Finally the Slacker, the one who hasn't put anything to paper or pixels yet. His ideas have been brewing in his mind since he first received the project. Changing, evolving, ideas come and are dismissed, others are picked apart and rearranged into something different, better. New directions are explored, some working out and others not so much. All of this is happening in his head as the deadline is approaching. When the time finally arrives to actually produce the design the Slacker has a very clear picture of what he wants to do and is able to spend a much smaller amount of time implementing it than the first two designer types spent on theirs. And chances are his design will be a much better thought out concept than theirs were. It was Abraham Lincoln who said; "Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe" That concept hold true in graphic design, especially when dealing with deadlines. The longer you spend thinking about your design before starting, the faster you'll be able to design it and the better the design will be. I know it's not always easy to do. I've found myself hanging up the phone with a client and being so exited about their project that I've dropped everything to get started on it. I also know those are the projects that I've wasted the most time changing and revising before being satisfied enough to show it to the client. If I would have taken the time to reflect on my ideas I probably could have saved myself a lot of time and come up with the same design or maybe even something better. So what I'm saying is give yourself time to think about your design before diving in. If you don't deal well with the pressure of deadlines then don't wait until the last minute. Give yourself enough time to get the job done but also give yourself enough time to know you're doing the job right, and to the best of your ability. Dealing with deadlines is all about balance. Learn to master that and you're on your way to becoming a better and more proficient graphic designer. What do you think? What do you do when you take some time off from your graphic design business? Fear was defined by the psychologist as False Expectation Appearing Real. Webster Dictionary defines Fear as dread, alarm, anxiety, unpleasant emotion caused by coming evil or danger. The Dictionary defines belief as confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof. Get ready to be encouraged. Super-encouraged, truth be known. I say this because THE THING that everybody wants (and I say “everybody” without any fear of contradiction, without any worry of exaggeration)… THE THING that everybody wants is readily available, and ours for the asking. It’s just that so many people have no idea what it is they really want. But trust me, we all want this… You could call it the “Search for the Holy Grail.” The Holy Grail: defined in two ways by our friends at the Webster Dictionary website: 1. In its formal usage: The cup/chalice from which Jesus supposedly drank in the Upper Room during the Last Supper, sought after (some would say) protected throughout the Middle Ages by the Knights Templar. Which is NOT the Holy Grail to which I refer. 2. Informal usage: Something that we all very much want, but that is very hard to receive or to achieve. Which is indeed the Holy Grail to which I do refer. However, I would dispute the part about “very hard” to receive or to achieve. As we are about to discover in this PODCAST, it’s not hard at all to find and to enjoy that Holy Grail -- that which we all so desperately want and need (even if we don’t realize what the “that” is for which we are so desperately searching).
