Jaksossa uppoudumme Sinkkiksen ultimaattisen romantikon Charlotten mielenmaisemaan.

In early 2021, a Wikipedia editor peered into the future and saw what looked like a funnel cloud on the horizon: the rise of GPT-3, a precursor to the new chatbots from OpenAI. When this editor — a prolific Wikipedian who goes by the handle Barkeep49 on the site — gave the new technology a try, he could see that it was untrustworthy. The bot would readily mix fictional elements (a false name, a false academic citation) into otherwise factual and coherent answers. But he had no doubts about its potential. “I think A.I.'s day of writing a high-quality encyclopedia is coming sooner rather than later,” he wrote in “Death of Wikipedia,” an essay that he posted under his handle on Wikipedia itself. He speculated that a computerized model could, in time, displace his beloved website and its human editors, just as Wikipedia had supplanted the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which in 2012 announced it was discontinuing its print publication.Recently, when I asked this editor if he still worried about his encyclopedia's fate, he told me that the newer versions made him more convinced that ChatGPT was a threat. “It wouldn't surprise me if things are fine for the next three years,” he said of Wikipedia, “and then, all of a sudden, in Year 4 or 5, things drop off a cliff.”This story was recorded by Audm. Education Headline RoundupIt's been a busy week in education news as students and educators in the U.S. head back to school following summer break. Here are the headlines in this week's edu news roundup:The Biden administration is once again attempting to follow through on campaign promises to alleviate student debt. Details of the SAVE program are discussed. The Boys & Girls Club of America has released a new study revealing troubling trends in levels of bullying and cyberbulling in American schools. The College Board is in hot water over revelations that it sends student SAT scores and GPAs to Facebook and TikTok through tracking pixels (advertising technology). The Columbia County Library in Dayton, Washington, is facing a possible dissolution vote on November 7th after a series of book challenges.Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts announced a new program that would make community college tuition-free for residents without a prior post-secondary degree.Wikipedia and the Quest for a Universal EncyclopediaWikipedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history. Maintained by a large cohort of volunteer editors, the free, online encyclopedia aims to make “the sum of all human knowledge” available to the world. The project of Wikipedia sparks a number of questions of interest to the modern educator, such as: What is expertise? What events, locations, objects, people, artworks, and inventions etc. are noteworthy? What exactly is a neutral point of view? How does living contemporaneously to events of historical significance impact our ability to evaluate them accurately? Is Wikipedia Trustworthy?Wikipedia is a living document, an undulating sea of interconnected articles, references, policies, and end users. Though neutrality is a guiding Wikipedian philosophy, vandalism does sometimes occur, and mistakes are sometimes made. (Studies have shown, however, that Wikipedia is nearly as accurate as traditional print reference resources, such as Encyclopedia Britannica.) We'll investigate the epistemological challenges inherent to a collaborative and ever-evolving repository of knowledge. We'll also uncover some startling demographic statistics about Wikipedia's editors, who aren't as representative of the average world citizen as you might think. The Impact of AI and Other Modern Internet Forces on WikipediaThe rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is having a major impact on Wikipedia. AI can be used to generate content, summarize articles, and identify vandalism. However, AI also poses a threat to the integrity of the content of Wikipedia, as it often introduces inaccuracies, fabrications, and “hallucinations,” some of which can be extremely difficult to detect. Other modern Internet forces, such as deepfakes and misinformation, are also disrupting Wikipedia's vast knowledge experiment.Join us as we investigate the history and impact of one of the world's top 10 websites.Sources & Resources:TED Talk - The Birth of WikipediaThe Independent - Nobody should trust Wikipedia, says man who invented Wikipedia by Mayank AggarwalYouTube - The White House: President Biden Announces the SAVE Plan for Student Loan BorrowersNPR - Borrowers can now apply for new, income-based student loan repayment by Sequoia Carrillo and Cory TurnerBoys & Girls Clubs of America - Youth Right NowAxios - Students face new school year with jump in bullying by April RubinGizmodo - The College Board Tells TikTok and Facebook GPAs and Details About SAT Scores by Thomas GermainWBUR - Community college is now free for Mass. residents 25 and older.

This episode was originally published on August 20, 2018 (2 years ago, whoa!) For countless historical and social reasons, most of the people editing Wikipedia are white men. This has led to broad bias across the world's de facto repository of online knowledge. But a loose affiliation of women are making up the ground by writing and editing the biographies of historically significant women and minorities who might otherwise be overlooked by academic or popular culture. We all use Wikipedia on a daily basis, but do you really know how humanity’s largest organized body of knowledge gets made? Beutler explains the dynamic and rigorous process that happens behind the scenes of controversial Wikipedia articles, how Wikipedians are handling information about COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter, the ever-present specter of bias, and how the entire Internet would be different if Wikipedia operated as a for-profit company. Thanks for joining us for West Seattle Daily, Episode #016, brought to you by Sea-Town Real Estate. I'm your host, Christian Harris. Normally we would reserve Thursday for our "throwbacks" but considering the date, we are changing it up... This Wednesday we are throwing it back to January 15th, 2001, when the first edit was made on Wikipedia by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger. Since then, wikipedia has dubbed it's birthday as “Wikipedia Day”. Love them or hate them, you have to admit they have made a large impact on how we view and think about information and knowledge... which I'll get more into in a couple minutes. Wikipedia was made from the concept of compiling the world’s knowledge in a single location allowing anyone and everyone freedom to edit and share this knowledge. This was really the beginning of the mainstream movement of what is today known as "crowd sourcing". Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has stated that the concept for Wikipedia, came to him when he was a graduate student at Indiana University where he was impressed with the successes of the open-source movement and found Richard Stallman's Emacs Manifesto promoting free software and a sharing economy to be quite interesting. Fun Facts about Wikipedia: ⁃ Anyone can edit Wikipedia and become a Wikipedian! ⁃ There are currently 38,027,802 Wikipedia accounts, of which 123,869 are actively editing. ⁃ As of December 2019, Wikipedia articles have been created in 307 languages To quote some ideas from one of my favorite & thought provocative books, "The Next Story-Life & Faith After the Digital Explosion" by Tim Challies: This is a shift from the traditional model of knowledge and authority though. Let's take a minute to talk about the down-side of such a movement of crowd sourcing information. Wikipedia is the democratization of information and on Wikipedia, the information is never final or complete and always changing. Anyone at anytime can make changes to a page, and I would argue that those who are motivated to spend their time adding or updating a wiki-page are more likely to have an agenda or bias. Wikipedia measure truth by consensus while Search Engines measure truth by relevance - both of them highlight issues relevant to discovering what is true in a digital world. Knowledge has typically come from above, from the chosen few, the experts. Professors, pastors, Book Authors and others told us what is true about the world we live in. But all of this is now shifting in the digital world. It is now the consensus of the masses (crowd sourced like Wikipedia, social media & the internet in general) that informs our understanding. In the place of few experts we have many amateurs. New digital technologies function as a great leveler, reducing the authority of the expert and elevating the authority of the amateur. The life long theologian has no more authority than the young child, the teacher has no more authority than the pupil, the parent has no more authority than the child. As we undermine the authority inherent in knowledge, how long will it be before we undermine authority in other areas of life? The more important the subject matter, the less you should rely on Wikipedia and other similar sites. Just some food for thought. Let me know what you think.

In 2018, a common thread across Community Signal conversations was knowing how to clearly communicate the success of community across an organization. It’s fitting that for our first show of 2019, we’re joined by Tammy Armstrong, someone who is passionate about using data to solve problems. Tammy and Patrick met on KarateForums.com and from her years as a community member and moderator, she learned a valuable lesson (care of Oprah): “When we know better, we do better.” This lesson carries throughout the entire episode. When we mature and become more empathetic, we become better community members. When we know more about our community goals and shortcomings, we can use the data at our disposal to do better. When we’re using the internet ourselves, we should be cognizant of the trade offs that we’re making with our data and whether or not it’s worth it. Tammy also shares several tips and tools [22:30] for those that are just starting to unravel the data behind their online communities, but her greatest (and cheapest?) bit of advice involves understanding the goals and vision for your community. From there, data is just another tool to help you reach your desired outcome [40:36]. Tammy and Patrick also discuss: The positive impact of teenagers within online communities Best practices for data visualization How to start unpacking the wealth of data behind online communities Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes On sharing data in an accessible format: “Honestly, basic charts are really powerful because they’re so well understood, they’re so well used, and it can be tempting to get into this, ‘I’ve created something nobody’s ever seen before, it’s so novel.’ … Generally, visualizations are for people other than just the person making them. Your audience is going to work that much harder to understand the message you’re trying to get across, so you’re creating some cognitive burden for them to just read it, let alone take away the point that you’re trying to get across.” –@tammylarmstrong There’s no such thing as a free (software) lunch: “When you are giving up data, or when you’re getting free software, software companies aren’t doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They’re getting something out of it, and most of the time it’s data. They’re monetizing that in some way, or maybe they’re latching on to your hard drive and leveraging your computing power for Bitcoin or something. There’s something that you’re giving up whether or not you know it, and we really need to be generally more savvy in terms of what that means.” –@tammylarmstrong On making your data work for you: “Think about your goals with your community. Your data is a tool and a valuable asset, so if you start with your goal in mind and think about what you want to get out of the community, where do you want to be in five years, and then turn that around and say, ‘Well, where am I right now?’ Having that guiding point is super helpful because otherwise you can just get lost in all of your data. So, start with the end in mind.” –@tammylarmstrong About Tammy Armstrong Tammy Armstrong is passionate about using data to solve problems and make the world a better place. As team leader of customer service analytics at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, she works to improve the customer experience and maximize efficiency. Previously, she worked in independent education fundraising as the director of analytics for Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, Oregon. Tammy also serves as the treasurer of Reboot Iowa, a nonprofit startup dedicated to educating adults in computer science. In their spare time, Tammy and her husband Mike record Bright Lights Big Data, a podcast exploring how local communities work through interviews and discussions on urban planning and analytics. Tammy has an MS in Analytics from North Carolina State University, and a BA in Economics from Gettysburg College. She enjoys baking, playing soccer with her husband, and chasing after their toddler daughter and two cats. For countless historical and social reasons, most of the people editing Wikipedia are white men. This has led to broad bias across the world's de facto repository of online knowledge. But a loose affiliation of women are making up the ground by writing and editing the biographies of historically significant women and minorities who might otherwise be overlooked by academic or popular culture. Emily Temple-Wood joined Wikipedia at 12, and became an administrator at 13. In 2016, she was honored by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales as Wikipedian of the Year. For nearly her entire time on the site, she has dealt with obscene, personal abuse. “People have been harassing me since the first vandal figured out I was a lady,” Emily told Wired earlier this year. “Which was within a month or so of my joining the site.” She has turned that abuse into motivation, increasing the quantity and quality of women’s biographies on Wikipedia, through efforts like WikiProject Women Scientists. On this episode, we talk about the abuse Emily has received, and how it has changed over the years, along with her methods of dealing with it. Plus: The incredible contribution of teenagers to online communities and collaborative platforms Why Wikipedia spoke to pre-teen Emily Is there more that Wikipedia should be doing? Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “It’s okay for you to feel upset and bothered when someone says vile, vile things to you. That’s a normal human response. It’s because you’re an empathetic normal human. It’s what you do with those feelings that counts. If you’re upset and you need to, I don’t know, throw a pillow and snuggle a cat and go for a walk or go for a run or cry or whatever, that’s all a very normal way of dealing with things. In the long run, when you find a way to do something productive with these really heady emotions, that’s how you survive it for the long haul.” –@keilanawiki “Not only do I get inspiration from these women, and I’m standing on the shoulders of giants, absolutely, in every way, I’m also getting to share these stories and get knowledge out there about women who have been kind of neglected and forgotten. That work will stand the test of time. [The abuse I receive] won’t. So, I’m playing the long game.” –@keilanawiki “I was on Wikipedia at age 12… for me at first, participating in this online community, where I was respected for my contributions, was really important to me because I felt like I was a valued member of a community – when I wasn’t that offline.” –@keilanawiki “I think a more productive way of approaching the [online abuse] conversation, at least right now, is not say, ‘How can we engineer our way out of this? How can we create technology to get us out of this?’ It’s encouraging communities to grow healthy patterns and healthy ways and encouraging resilience among more marginalized members of communities who are marginalized for discriminatory type reasons, not because they should be marginalized because they’re terrible.” –@keilanawiki About Emily Temple-Wood Emily Temple-Wood is an American Wikipedia editor who goes by the name of Keilana on the site. She is known for her efforts to counter the effects and causes of gender bias on Wikipedia, particularly through the creation of articles about women in science. Nancy Maron Interview On today’s show, we will hear from Nancy Maron, President and Founder of BlueSky to BluePrint, a strategic consulting firm helping publishers, librarians, and leaders of digital initiatives to develop sustainable business models. Website Comments from today’s co-host: You know, Bill Hannay is going to be a hard act to follow from the last episode, but I’m going to do my best. No singing though! I’m Leah Hinds, Assistant Director of the Charleston Conference, and the Director of Marketing and Promotions and Editor of the ATG NewsChannel website for Against the Grain. I’ve worked in various roles and projects with the Conference and ATG since 2005. I love the changing nature of event planning and organization for the conference – there are new challenges and new people to work with each year so it’s always a little different. But most of all, I really admire Katina’s philosophy behind the whole thing – bringing librarians, publishers, vendors, consultants, and others together on a level playing field, giving a platform for new voices, and inviting diverse viewpoints across the information and scholarly communication industry. That also holds true for Against the Grain, both in print and online, and this allows the conversations to continue throughout the year and not just for a week in Charleston. A little personal background, I live on a small farm in rural SC about 2 hours from Charleston. I started my day with twin baby goats fighting over who got to sit in my lap, which was just about the cutest thing ever. I’m a volunteer with our local 4-H club and I go to lots of shows and meetings with my kids and our various animals. Today, I’m chatting with Nancy L. Maron. Nancy is President and Founder of BlueSky to BluePrint, a strategic consulting firm helping publishers, librarians, and leaders of digital initiatives to develop sustainable business models. This grew out of a career spent working with and for publishers, libraries, and booksellers, and an ongoing fascination with all the ways that new technologies can influence the way we create, consume, and enjoy information. She is author of several studies concerning publishing, digital humanities, and business models including The Costs of Publishing Monographs (2016) and sustaining the Digital Humanities: Host Institution Support beyond the Start-up Phase (2014), and with co-author Kim Schmelzinger of the Monograph Costing Tool, released by AAUP in 2016. In 2012, she joined the Board of the Yonkers Public Library, a three-branch system serving a city of nearly 200,000 residents. As Board President since 2014, she has spearheaded several key initiatives, including a national search for Library Director, the 2015 Library Gala, and development of the YPL Strategic Plan, 2017-2021. Adam Chesler has been promoted to Director, Global Sales, AIP Publishing. Adam will lead the Global Sales and Sales Support teams with a keen focus on driving sales activity to academic, government, and corporate libraries around the world. Adam has been with AIP Publishing for a year and a half and has made some significant contributions to the organization as a Senior Sales Manager. In addition to his contributions, Adam is a conference director for the Charleston Conference. When he is not working Adam can be found eating ice cream, watching baseball and volunteering at his public library (and on rare occasions all three at once). Michael Duffy has been appointed Director of Library Sales, SAGE Publishing. He will oversee SAGE’s North American Library Sales Team. Michael joined SAGE Publishing as Library Sales Manager in 2011 and quickly moved from Senior Library Sales Manager to District Library Sales Manager to his current role as Director. Previously, he worked in sales at Thomson Reuters and in editorial capacities at Oxford University Press and Wolters Kluwer, among other organizations. Michael holds a Master of Science degree in Publishing from Pace University. Two librarians in the big news recently! Sengul-Jones will work with WebJunction to design and deliver an online training program that will introduce U.S. public librarians to the innerworkings of Wikipedia this fall. The training will enable librarians to edit Wikipedia, guide patrons in its use and lead local Wikipedia-based community engagement programs with confidence. In her role, Sengul-Jones will also foster connections between public librarians and Wikipedia's volunteer editor community. Read the press release.
Vuorossa on yksi hurjimmista: tamadabanisokeltapaunikko. Ihan kuin kuulisin entisen englanninopettajani Timo Tikan sanovan: “repeat after me” tamadabani_sokeltapa_unikko. Tamadaban_isokelta_paunikko. Painotuksella on väliä.

In this NMC On the Horizon event, our panel of experts explores potential applications of crowdsourcing to enhance teaching and learning. To register for future events, visit http://go.nmc.org/register. Crowdsourcing refers to a set of methods that can be used to motivate a community to contribute ideas, information, or content that would otherwise remain undiscovered. Its rapidly growing appeal stems from its effectiveness in filling gaps that cannot be bridged by other means, in addition to the spirit of inclusivity in involving communities in content creation and decision-making. One particularly compelling component of this topic is crowdfunding -- an effort to raise money through a network of people, typically through a combination of social networks and fundraising platforms on the Internet. Panel moderator: Samantha Adams Becker, Senior Director of Communications at the NMC Panelists: Emory Craig, Director of eLearning at the College of New Rochelle Heather Chirtea, founder and Executive Director at Digital Wish Lori Byrd Philips, Digital Marketing Content Coordinator and the former Wikipedian in Residence at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis Yohn Sutton, Zookeeper of Reptiles and Amphibians at the Virginia Zoological Park

Over the past few years, cultural institutions have formed partnerships with Wikipedia in order to increase their visibility on the web and connect with a vibrant community of online volunteers. As a purpose-driven, non-profit educational project, Wikipedia and its sister sites have shared values and interests with cultural institutions that are only now being fully realized. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has become an enthusiastic and vocal participant in this movement to build bridges with Wikipedia and its community. Using specific examples, Dominic McDevitt-Parks discusses how NARA views the partnership as a vehicle for increasing access to holdings, citizen engagement, and openness, while addressing practical concerns and challenges institutions will likely face if they choose to become involved. Speaker Biography: Dominic McDevitt-Parks was Wikipedian in residence at the National Archives and Records Administration from 2011-2012. He came to NARA from the Archives Management program at Simmons College and also holds a B.A. in history from Reed College. He has been a volunteer Wikipedia contributor since 2004. Speaker Biography: Kristin Anderson is a cataloging librarian in the History and Military Science section at the Library of Congress. She is an active volunteer in the Wikipedia community.
