Rich and Carola have accepted the fact that the EU will probably implement their whole Green Deal before the Dithering Team finishes reviewing it. But undaunted by the extensiveness of the deal, they soldier through two policy areas which should be so much more at the heart of any green economy than the Green Deal makes them out to be: Building & Renovation, and Sustainable Mobility. However, Carola and Rich are not impressed by these two expressions of policy-oriented interventions. If the EU Green Deal is supposed to shift behaviour of member states to chose more green solutions for mobility (and area that represents 70% of green house gases), or initiate that lauded “renovation wave”, as discussed in the EU policies, these policy areas and their targets are so humble that Carola wonders if the EU really means business or if it’s caught in that ever enduring tension between sovereignty and unity. It poses the question of whether ‘politically doable’ is just not enough to save the planet. On a recent flight from Seattle to Dallas, I had the honor of sitting next to Medal of Honor recipient Lt. Col. Bruce P. Crandell. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions as a pilot during the Battle of Ia Drang on November 14, 1965 in South Vietnam. During the battle, he flew 22 missions in an unarmed helicopter into enemy fire to evacuate more than 70 wounded and bring ammunition and supplies to US forces. This event was later documented in the movie "We Were Soldiers" with Mel Gibson in 2002. Crandell was portrayed by actor Greg Kinnear in the film. His poetry has garnered a number of awards and recognitions including the T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize. His newest collection of poetry, Self-Portrait as Wikipedia Entry, was recently published by Copper Canyon Press. A native of Western Oklahoma, he is now based in San Francisco where he is professor of English at the University of San Francisco.

Brett is a co-founder of Psymposia, an organization dedicated to building community and honest dialogue around drugs and society through live events. They are the creators of the Psymposia Conference, now in it's third year, and of the "Psychedelic Storytelling" events, which could be described as "The Moth Radio Hour... On Acid." Brett is also madly in love with the mother of 2 teenagers, and has been a part oftheir lives for twelve years. At the end of our conversation, Brett and I are joined by one of them. In this conversation, we talk about the work of founding and maintaining a psychedelic non-profit, about how psychedelics helped Brett heal his mental illness, and how he is sharing his knowledge and excitement about these substances with his family.
