We're at the start of award season, so it's a perfect time to continue exploring MASKulinity on TV. This week, Samantha and Remoy walk each other through popular shows they've watched and ask, How are men and masculinity represented in these shows? Are they challenging the norm of MASKulinity or reinforcing it?Samantha starts off with a nod to Golden Globe-nominated Nobody Wants This for its evolved masculinity moments. Adam Brody has been in his nurturing masculinity bag since the early 2000s and we're here for it! She then winds our TVs back to the late ‘90s for a look at a breakthrough TV show at the time: Sex and The City.Remoy questions focusing on men while talking about a show that centers women. At any other time, Samantha would agree, butcher contends that it is helpful to see how women can perpetuate patriarchy. What are men like in a TV show that entirely focuses on the dating and sex lives of attractive women? Samantha reflects back on the different love interests in the show and how their viability as a partner was measured.Carrie's main love interests, Mr. Big and Aidan, embodied two different sides of the coin that is traditional masculinity. Neither challenge patriarchal norms, still, it's worth asking: Why would an emotionally unavailable tycoon be a better suited partner than a nurturing provider? Short answer: patriarchal tropes. Long answer: Nice guys finish last in the patriarchy, and SATC is no different.Remoy acknowledges his own past as a Mr. Big type, proving that emotional unavailability doesn't have to be lifelong!Remoy didn't regret missing the show, but he couldn't help but wonder, Do these stereotypical dating situations on TV inform our real dating lives or is it the other way around? Patriarchy didn't just impact dating in SATC. Casual homophobia, racism, and transphobia were peppered throughout the show. The two call out that SATC touted itself as a feminist show, but only explored well-to-do, slim white women's dating and sex lives. Everyone else does feel othered including men, who are one-dimensional and just meant to be chosen.Samantha admits why she continued to watch the show despite all these tropes. She reflects on her younger self's patriarchal leanings. There were good things about SATC. While missing clear opportunities to be inclusive and well-rounded in their depictions of dating life in New York City, Where the characters in the MASK On, MASK Off game from our “TV Dads” episode grappled with masculinity, SATC sticks to traditional expectations of masculinity by condensing male characters into three types. [13:00] Do you agree? Let us know!Samantha ends her story with a quick note on the SATC reboot, And Just Like That.People have been vocal about how the show is forcibly inclusive.Samantha shares some examples and opines on how evolved the reboot is compared to the old show. What your verdict? Has this franchise evolved? Holler at us! @ maskulinitypodRemoy takes the mic and picks up where he left off with his new favorite show, Shrinking. In Shrinking, men, and characters in general, are imparted with nuance and humanity that was clearly missing from SATC's supporting characters.Remoy maintains his fave was snubbed at the Golden Globes and attempts to foster appreciation in Samantha for his new show.He shares a few clips from the show and lets Samantha ask clarifying questions about the show.Cue in intergenerational friendships, community problem-solving, open communication with teenage children, and healthy grey-area relationships between men and women.Shrinking does what And Just Like That attempted to do but in a realistic and relatable manner.Changing neighborhood dynamics leads folks to call out racist behavior, rather than yearning for the past. Remoy breaks down how characters deal with grief and changing dynamics in their lives.Samantha immediately takes to Derek and Remoy gives her the lowdown. In this ensemble cast, there are various folks support each other. The relationship between father and daughter is quite moving.Remoy gives praise to the writing of the show gracefully weaving themesReferenced on this episode:Our episode on TV DadsThe paper that informed Samantha's gamifying of TV dads? Evan Handler is beloved by millions for portraying Harry Goldenblatt, divorce-lawyer-turned-husband to Kristin Davis's Charlotte York, on HBO's groundbreaking series, and films, “Sex and the City,” it's current MAX follow-up, “And Just Like That,” as well as Charlie Runkle on Showtime's seven season “Californication.” In addition to authoring two highly acclaimed books, Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, and It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, Evan has played leading roles in ABC's “It's Like, You Know…,” and NBC's “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” STARZ' “Power,” and made numerous memorable guest appearances on “Lost,” “The West Wing,” “Six Feet Under,” “Necessary Roughness,” and “Friends.” In 2000, Evan played Larry Fine in ABC's TV movie “The Three Stooges,” followed by additional “real life” portrayals of Lloyd Blankfein in HBO's “Too Big to Fail,” Alan Dershowitz in FX's “People vs. OJ Simpson,” and Hal Prince in FX's “Fosse/Verdon,” each of which garnered numerous wide-ranging awards. On the big screen, Evan played a leading role in Ron Howard's “Ransom,” starring Mel Gibson, and featured and leading roles Oliver Stone's “Natural Born Killers,” “Taps,” “The Chosen,” and “Sweet Lorraine.” He's currently visible in David Duchovny's directorial effort, “Reverse the Curse.” Prior to his work in film and television, Evan earned acclaim in seven Broadway productions, all performed between his twenty-first and thirtieth birthdays, and all in spite of losing nearly five years of that span to his fight against a supposedly “incurable” leukemia. During this time Evan starred in Broadway productions of “Six Degrees of Separation,” “I Hate Hamlet,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “Broadway Bound” and “Master Harold...and the boys.” Evan also worked extensively in off-Broadway and regional theater at NY's Public Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Rep, and Steppenwolf, performing early plays by Donald Margulies, Robert Schenkkan, Jez Butterworth, and numerous others. Evan's first book, Time On Fire, details his unlikely recovery from the leukemia diagnosed in the mid-1980s. His second book, It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive, describes the twenty-year period post-illness, and Handler's surprisingly circuitous journey toward gratitude, using tales of serial dating, absurd relationships, unexpected depressions, and, ultimately, lasting love and a miracle conception. Sex and the City's Samantha Jones and Charlotte York were set up to be complete opposites: Samantha the free-loving, up for anything hottie and Charlotte the romantic, repressed Park Ave princess. But when we take a deeper look at their stories, we actually start to see that surprisingly… they're a lot alike. While they don't always see eye to eye on the ‘right' way to live one's life, they do share some important similarities in the ways they go about getting what they want (and in how they grow over the course of the show.) The pair actually provide some really interesting insight into how – regardless of the boxes that society might try to put us in – we're not actually that different from people we think are nothing like us, and how having those people in our lives can actually help us form a more accepting, multifaceted view of ourselves. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on May 29th 2022 One of the many series that PAUL CHANDLER, THE SHY YETI is an enthusiastic fan of is the HOME BOX OFFICE series SEX AND THE CITY, which ran for six seasons, which started in the last couple of years of the last century, and continued through into the first few years of the twenty first, and has since been revived for two feature films, and has now resurfaced in the spin-off series AND JUST LIKE THAT which, he assures me, does not involve any magic tricks or fez wearing that he's aware of. SEX AND THE CITY told the stories of the friendship between four smart and dynamic women living in New York City around the time of the millennium, who seem to have no secrets from each other, and share frank details of every matter in their personal lives, whilst living at the more successful, fashionable, and privileged end of life in the city that never sleeps. The series was based upon the newspaper column in THE NEW YORK OBSERVER and subsequent book written by CANDACE BUSHNELL, and consisted of ninety-four episodes broadcast over six seasons from June 1998 through to February 2004. It features SARAH JESSICA PARKER as CARRIE BRADSHAW, whose newspaper column gives the series its title and much of its subject matter. Her three friends, who have varying degrees of success in their personal lives, are CHARLOTTE YORK (played by KRISTIN DAVIS), who works in an Art Gallery, SAMANTHA JONES (played by KIM CATTRALL), an independent business woman who had a career in PR, and MIRANDA HOBBES (played by CYNTHIA NIXON), who is a very successful lawyer. SEX AND THE CITY is a series that is hugely popular with its fans all around the world, but, despite having a few vague memories of dipping in and having a peek at a couple of episodes when it first appeared on terrestrial television in the UK, it was never a series that I was particularly drawn towards, so PAUL is here to persuade me, as my guests often are these days, how wrong I was to ignore it, and to tell me why it's one of his favourites and why I ought to perhaps give it another try. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Discretion is advised for younger listening audiences. Today we start a 4 part series on relationship lessons we can learn from the characters from the famous TV show Sex and the City. We feel like there are many things from these characters we can learn from and apply to us. This episode is PART 2, where we focus on the character Charlotte York. Charlotte was a traditional woman with naive thoughts, not because she wasn't brilliant but because her privileged upbringing didn't allow for world experiences. In the beginning, she was judgmental of those who were untraditional in thought and action and had a prudish bright-eyed view of love and romance. Charlotte remained confident in her idealistic personal convictions and was honest with herself and those closest to her. She, too, was judged for her traditional expectations of relationships but always remembered for her unceasing desire to never forgo the hope of joy & love.   In this episode, we discuss a few of the changes, memorable Charlotte quotes, and the differences between her, the other characters, and the evolution of women. She was the voice of reason, practiced the power of positive thinking, and kept it classy even when she was telling it like is. No matter where you are on the spectrum of identifying with Charlotte, there is something to be learned from her personality, views, and life experiences. We would love to hear your insights as well! Sponsored by BLINKISThttp://www.blinkist.de/feuerundbrotCode: feuerundbrotDie 2000er sind wieder da! Unter Charakteren wie die Frauen in Sex and the City, Ally McBeal und Bridget Jones lag die Frage: Can (white cis hetero middle class) women have it all? (Subscribe to the podcast here!)Here's the essay:When it comes to dating, there are so many new ways to be cruel to one another. Ghosting, catfishing, breadcrumbing. And then there are all the fun variations. Haunting is when someone who ghosted you keeps lingering on your social media. (Delightful). Zombieing is when your ex suddenly pops up in your life. Fa--ntastic. I don’t know what it’s called when your ex just vanishes, though, and has no social media presence at all. My friends say that’s called a blessing. To me, it feels like a hallucination, like he never really existed. They say it should take about half the amount of time you were actually with the person to get over them. So if you were with someone for say, three months, you should be good to go in about 1.5 months. At least, that’s the lie that Charlotte from Sex in the City tells us so if you like getting your facts from a sanctimonious, overprivileged, fictional white woman, there you have it.According to that equation, I should’ve gotten over you around August of 2019, give or take, depending on what one considers the actual date of our breakup, which is debatable. (This is called the “slow fade”, according to Urban Dictionary, another highly reliable source).  So seeing as how it’s what, April 3, 2020 today?, clearly Charlotte York is a raving lunatic liar. Here’s another equation on the internet:  x/2 + j + l + k/2 + r = y. This alphabet soup equation factors in who broke up with whom; if you’re “soft” or have a heart of stone (alas, I’m marshmallow personified); if you were cheated on; if you are dating someone new or if the Whole Foods meat counter man said “I really want to do something else for you, I’m here till 6pm” and after you got over your furious blushing and went back a couple hours later, lipstick on and hair brushed to have him stare are you blankly and say “Oh yeah, I’m starting to remember, single organic chicken breast, right?”; and how often you check his Insta and how many times he likes your Facebook. With this calculus, I should shed this heartbreak somewhere around April 19. So...any day now! I find myself looking at George Clooney and his wife, the impeccable Amal Alamuddin who looks like an emaciated Jackie O. She’s a celebrated international lawyer and human rights champion. She’d make all the Miss Americas cry, basically. Clooney, of course, is the poster child for overrated male mediocrity and was the great white elephant for years, the elusive bachelor, and as I read the list of women who preceded the triumphant Mrs. Clooney - a list of starlets and bombshells, one more spectacular than the next - I couldn’t help but conclude:They weren’t enough. Likewise, I wasn’t enough. It’s way easier to blame oneself. It gives you a sense of control. I was:Too short Too tallToo fat Too thinToo needy Too aloofToo giving Too witholdingToo easy-going Too difficultToo loud Too quietToo slutty Too prudishToo low-maintanence Too high-maintanenceToo introverted Too socialToo funny Too dullToo intimidating Too timidToo independent Too co-dependentToo much. And also somehow...Not Enough. It’s easier than leaving open space for the truth which is:I don’t know why you left me. I don’t know why you did it the way you did, on the sidewalk, holding my hand as we crossed the street to your apartment, when you suddenly told me, standing in the rain, that you didn’t want me anymore. I don’t know why you broke up with me in a text. I don’t know why you suddenly stopped loving me when we’d made so many plans, dreaming of a life together full of adventures and a cozy home and a future that I’d just started to trust. Let’s just tell everyone we’re getting married, you’d once said. We fell in love during the polar vortex, in January 2019. The polar vortex is ever present, a sort of parachute covering the North Pole and every so often, parts of it break off, floating down the continents, pockets of frigid temperature that cause frostbite in less than five minutes.Ambiguous Loss is a loss that occurs without closure or clear understanding. The uncertainty complicates the grieving process because a person is left searching for answers. She’s left behind, time traveling in her mind with the irrational belief that, through the sheer force of her will, she may find a wormhole that will allow her to slip into an alternative universe where you remain, waiting for her. As the memories of us threaten to fade, I gather them up like ripe peaches from the ground, greedily dropping them into my apron, already heavy with rotting fruit, juices leaking and straining the thin fabric as I stagger under their weight.  “I thought you didn’t want to see me anymore,” I say. “I thought you didn’t want to see me anymore,” you say.We kissed for the first time curled up on your couch. I knelt on the cushions and I almost fell. “Are you okay?” you said, pulling me closer and “yes,” I said, not wanting to admit that my limbs had gone limp from swooning.

"Sex and the City"?
