Fresh off of the Lunar Eclipse in Libra, we must now come face-to-face with Chiron as it conjuncts the Solar Eclipse in Aries on April 8th. The nature of Chiron, the wounded healer, in Aries is an incurable pain point that is often associated with feeling unwanted and self-sufficient to a fault. This week, Christopher talks us through what can expect out of Chiron in the midst of this conjunction and how our own wounds will be tested.
It's that time of year— you've now entered the eclipse portal!
Sammy receives an unusual birthday gift, a smart device with a face, a set life span, and an unrelenting imperative to help. Genre: Science Fiction Excerpt: The figurine suddenly collapsed, then sprung up, wheeled her arms around, stretched them out, then up, then bopped up and down by bending at the knees. She gazed up at Sammy. “Hello there!” she said. “Are you the one who needs help?” Sammy said nothing. The figurine's movements were smooth and graceful and quiet. She made no jerking motions, emitted no mechanical sounds of motors or gears. She blinked, and she breathed. She moved as if she were a living creature. #theosophy #blavatsky #theosophicalsociety In this detailed exploration of the Theosophical Society and its founder, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, we delve into the intricate world of esoteric knowledge, spiritual practices, and the blending of Eastern and Western philosophies. The lecture provides a comprehensive overview of the Society's foundational principles, examining Blavatsky's pivotal role and her influential works, "The Secret Doctrine" and "Isis Unveiled." Key topics include the Society's meditation practices, characterised by an active engagement with esoteric truths aimed at achieving higher states of consciousness. The incorporation of Eastern philosophies, notably Hinduism and Buddhism, is highlighted as a revolutionary aspect of the Society's practices. The lecture further explores the Society's approach to the study and interpretation of sacred texts, emphasizing the synthesis of diverse spiritual teachings. The role of esoteric knowledge and psychic research within the Theosophical Society is also examined, with a focus on the pursuit of understanding the deeper truths of the universe and the human mind's potential. The episode distinguishes these endeavours from the era's more sensationalist spiritualist practices, positioning them within the context of spiritual evolution and ancient wisdom. References from both primary and secondary sources, including works by Marion Meade, William Kingsland, Peter Washington, and others, provide an academically grounded insight into the history and influence of the Theosophical Society. This lecture is ideal for those interested in religious studies, particularly in areas of magic, esotericism, Paganism, shamanism, and the occult. CONNECT & SUPPORT

In 2019, Colin Campbell's two teenage children, Ruby and Hart, were killed by a drunk driver. In the thick of this tragedy, Colin turned to the many books on grief that line shelves but ultimately realized they were unhelpful and failed to provide the insight he desperately sought. Channeling his grief, he wrote his new book (out March 14th) FINDING THE WORDS and a solo performance piece titled Grief: A One Man Shit-Show In LA (March 17-19) and NYC (March 29-April 16). You can find that info here. In FINDING THE WORDS (3/14/23; Hardcover; TarcherPerigee), Colin offers practical advice on how to survive in the aftermath of loss. By actively reaching out to their community, performing mourning rituals, and finding ways to express their grief, readers will learn how to live more fully while still holding their loved ones close. Campbell shines a light on a path forward through the darkness of grief. While processing his own grief, Colin realized that much of the common wisdom about coping with loss was unhelpful—that it is a private and mysteriousprocess and that the pain is so great that there “are no words.”While detailing his beautiful and personal account, Campbell also provides practical and actionable methods he and his wife took to navigate their profound grief. Inside, you can expect both a series of journaling prompts as well as concrete action plans to practice active grieving. Unlike in other books about grief, Campbell articulates certain truths such as the act of leaning into the pain, becoming an active protagonist in our journey through grief, and more. Joseph Emet joins us again to talk with Dr. Zohara about meditation in general, but specifically walking meditation. They also review his 2016 book Finding the Blue Sky: A Mindful Approach to Choosing Happiness Here and Now, TarcherPerigee, 2016. In this book Emet recounts his own journey toward wellbeing and happiness through mindfulness. These steps are outlined clearly in the book: Each chapter starts with a Zen story, and continues with a set of exercises for applying that teaching to real-life situations. Like Jon Kabat-Zinn, Joseph had his introduction to the mindfulness tradition through Zen. He trained with Roshi Robert Aitken in Hawaii, and then continued with Thich Nhat Hanh in Plum Village (France). At the end of his training, Thich Nhat Hanh appointed him a teacher in his tradition of Zen. Joseph Emet started the Mindfulness Meditation Centre in 1997. Since then, he has trained several thousand people in mindfulness practices in large and small groups, for organizations, and in private sessions. Emet holds a Doctorate in Music from Boston University. He has been certified in Reality Therapy Counselling with Dr. William Glasser, and has been a Fulbright scholar. He is also a long time T'ai Chi practitioner. This interview was recorded in 2022. http://mindfulnessmeditationcentre.org Hosted by Dr. Zohara Hieronimus. Sluyter says not to worry about thoughts during our meditation; they are inevitable. Often we must deal with such sounds as voices or traffic rolling by. He instructs that, “It's all a texture of the silence, which actually you are at your core. It's just resting in what you are in your own essence.” He also suggests that we find the meditation style that suits us. Dean Sluyter has taught natural methods of meditation and awakening throughout the United States and beyond since 1970. He's taught at colleges, yoga studios, corporate offices, and maximum-security prisons. He's known for his funny, down-to-earth style, and for making life-transforming teachings accessible and easy. Though we tend to think of "miraculous" healings as the domain of religious miracle workers, a number of UFO witnesses claim to have been spontaneously healed during or after their sightings. Farin Schlussel is the Assistant Director of Marketing for Avery Books and TarcherPerigee, two nonfiction publishing imprints at Penguin Publishing Group (a division of Penguin Random House, LLC). She loves helping readers find the new book that will change their lives and help them think differently. She shares her grief journey after her father, who she had not spoken to in over 10 years, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in 2016. We talk about how she felt this loss acutely even though she hadn't spoken to him in along time, but also worried about how others were going to view her and judge her grief. Her Jewish traditions she observed for 11 months, was one of the most powerful tools in her grief journey. Her dog Hershey was also a huge part of her support in her grief journey, he was her companion for 12 years and passed away in 2019. We talk about her grief process after he passed as well as when she found her new dog Penny, who came to her life and helped heal heart. Penny was part of this interview too, as she sat on Farin's lap throughout our conversation to comfort her. Farin also shares about her friends who were so understanding and supportive during her mourning period. They stepped up, and curved their lives to help her not be a alone during the 11 months while she was mourning and following the Jewish tradition of aveilut. She does not know what she would have done without them there. Her younger sister, who also lived nearby, was also a big part of her support system because they had a mostly shared experience. Those 11 months of aveilut helped her come to terms that she did not regret not having a relationship with her father and also that she had a right to grieve as well, because she had a loss, and she could grieve that loss no matter what people thought about her. Today, we have a riveting conversation with bestselling author and artist Meera Lee Patel. She’s got a new book out called Create Your Own Calm: A Journal for Quieting Anxiety. We have a powerful conversation about dealing with anxiety and why Meera thinks, “the more you run away from something, the more it follows you.” You’ll also enjoy Meera’s thoughts on self-acceptance, why journaling is a powerful conversation with yourself, and pay special attention to Meera’s ideas around “the only way out – is through.” Dealing With Anxiety Meera describes where she is at the moment. She is in an in-between/transition time where she is feeling overwhelmed. Further, she shares that she is struggling to be “at the moment.” She is at, exactly what Christopher describes as, the “cocoon period.” “I feel unable to act sometimes to take action and that's on several different levels. Personal, emotional professional, I feel like I can't take action or make the changes that I want to make. Some of them are true, some of the limitations that I faced that we're all facing — travel, leaving our homes, things like that. They're real. Some of them, especially the emotional and mental ones, like, in most cases, they're not real. They're self-implemented and I'm working on undoing them.” - Meera Lee Patel What You Resist, Persists Meera describes how we are all in a constant anxious state. She reminds us of the importance of understanding why things are happening to us and the need to address this head-on to be able to work through them. She believes that ignoring what causes your anxiety will run after you in a different setting. “I think that is far more healthy and productive and useful than simply ignoring or pushing aside, or forgetting about what's happening. So often when people say ‘to just suck it up,’ ‘you need to move on,’ ‘don't dwell on this.’ What they're doing is ignoring what's happening to them.” - Meera Lee Patel Different Worlds and Philosophies People are often surprised when they meet Meera as she has “different worlds and philosophies.” She has different sides that are not exactly visible on her Instagram account. “I think in my work, my artwork especially, which tends to be very vibrant, and ethereal, expresses a side of me that would be unseen. Otherwise, that is simply the form it takes. It comes out in my painting, this very upbeat, kind of beautiful, peaceful watercolor, those aspects of my personality and my being come out in my work.” - Meera Lee Patel Meera also talks about why journaling is a form of conversation with oneself and a whole lot more. To know more about Meera and how to create your own calm, download and listen to this episode. Bio: Meera Lee Patel is a self-taught artist and writer who believes that anything is possible. She is the author of My Friend Fear: Finding Magic in the Unknown (TarcherPerigee, an imprint of Penguin Random House) a beautiful meditation on fear and how it can help us become who we really are--if we let it. She is also the author of three journals with TarcherPerigee, an imprint of Penguin Random House: Create Your Own Calm, a journal for quieting anxiety which encourages self-acceptance for quelling anxiety and stress. Knowing how to handle sexual harassment when it happens increases efficiency!HOT TOPICS OF THE EPISODE[1:18] - Monique introduces her guests, Joanne Bagshaw & Adrienne Lawrence.[1:51] - Tell us about who you are, what you do and where you’re from?I'm Adrienne Lawrence, I'm from Los Angeles, California. I'm an attorney turned TV broadcaster and I wrote a book called staying in the game.I’m Joanne Bagshaw, I'm from Long Island, New York. I'm a professor of Psychology and Women's studies and a sexual relationship therapist and the author of the feminist handbook.[3:11] - What got you to the point of writing the book about feminism, making sure women understand it's not them but the patriarchy? The telling story from my childhood that resonates today with feminism and helps lead me down the path of being a feminist is that I'm an adoptee. After eight years of practicing law, I wanted more for myself, I wanted to challenge myself. [11:53] - What do you think is the impact of adoptions on kids? That really depends on the adoptive parents and the birth parents on what kind of arrangement they make.[16:06] - What do you think should be changed to be able to create better better systems? The first step is to get more women in politics. A patriarchy is a male dominated system, and we have mostly men making these decisions.[35:48] - So, this is for the both of you, what would be one thing that you wish women would change in themselves, in terms of interactions excluding women in order to improve the situation?I would like more women to speak up to call people out. I would like to specifically call on white women to speak up.[42:41] - Joanne talks about what feminism is all about.[45:42] - What are we going to do to those people who're telling us that we are making up everything in our mind?My thought is that your thoughts of me have nothing to do with me.So if you think I'm making things up in my mind, you tell yourself what you need to tell yourself to not address your behavior.[54:06] - What does efficiency mean to you?Not having to do everything myself.Efficiency should be maximizing your time to focus on the things that are aligned with your goals.[55:13] - Which of the three things would you keep doing over and over again to get back to success?I'm definitely still going to law school.I'm probably gonna still get all of the schooling that I got. I think for me, trusting my intuition.Moving off of Long Island earlier.Maintaining my educational background.AWESOME RESOURCES THAT WE TALKED ABOUT IN THIS EPISODEBook: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/609265/staying-in-the-game-by-adrienne-lawrence/Program: https://joannebagshaw.mykajabi.com/sales-page-b06fac61-e4cb-44c3-9943-03bcd68bd72cIMPACTFUL QUOTES OF THIS EPISODEIf you think I'm making things up in my mind, you tell yourself what you need to tell yourself to not address your behavior. - Adrienne LawrenceEfficiency means getting help. - Joanne BagshawFIND MORE ABOUT JOANNE & ADRIENNE HERE.Websites: https://www.joannebagshaw.com/ & https://www.adriennejlawrence.com/book-1Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joanne.bagshaw/Twitter: https://twitter.com/adriennelaw See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This means that a book is translated in another language and published in the local market of that language. In this episode however, Maylis and I discuss another type of subsidiary rights sales - and therefore a different potential income stream for authors - which is the licensing of audiovisual rights. We specifically cover movie and TV adaptations, as well as a relative newcomer in the book licensing world: podcast adaptations. Enjoy! PS: I'm excited to start including a "Show Notes" section below, which will mention the book recommendations from the guest of each specific episode. SHOW NOTES Maÿlis recommends the following three books: The Wall by Marlen Haushoffer (US paperback edition with Quartet Books; translated from the German: Die Wand, Claassen/Ullstein) Resilience: How Your Inner Strength Can Set You Free from Your Past by Boris Cyrulnik (US paperback edition with TarcherPerigee; translated from the French: Résilience, connaissances de bases, Odile Jacob) La coquille Saint Jacques, sentinelle de l'Océan by Laurent Chauvaud (Les Equateurs; no English translation available)

Of the millions of books that have been published, few are as renowned or as coveted today by collectors as the famous Bible printed in the 15th century by Johannes Gutenberg. In The Lost Gutenberg: The Astounding Story of One Book's Five-Hundred-Year Odyssey (TarcherPerigee, 2019), Margaret Leslie Davis traces the journey of one copy of this book – known as Number 45 – over the course of two centuries as it changed hands through a succession of owners. As Davis explains, at the start of the 19th-century Gutenberg Bibles were not as highly prized by the growing market of rare book collectors, which allowed Archibald Acheson, the third earl of Gosford, to acquire Number 45 for a relatively small sum in 1836. By the time it was sold nearly a half-century later, however, its status had skyrocketed and with it the price it commanded. After a succession of British owners, Davis describes the book’s acquisition in 1950 by the American heiress Estelle Doheny, which brought Number 45 across the Atlantic Ocean and into the hands of the only woman known to own a copy. Though the book was donated to a Catholic seminary upon her death along with the rest of her collection, its sale in 1987 to a Japanese publisher led to a second transoceanic journey that brought it to Japan. There Number 45 became the first Gutenberg accessible to millions as its pages were subsequently photographed and the images posted on the Internet for anyone online to see. First of all, how random that my colleague Erin Lowry, leading expert on Millennials and their money and author of the book Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together, and fellow money blogger, lives across the street from me in Astoria, Queens?! When we're not hanging out, I sometimes bump into her on the street as she's walking her dog, or going to dinner with her nice boyfriend. Also, totally random, this year both of us have books out with the same Penguin Random House imprint, TarcherPerigee. Also, less random (see what I did there??), we both supported Hillary, and are resistance activists, and co-hosted a post-card writing party in the hood. In this episode, Erin and I talk about what she knows best — How Millennials can thrive financially. This includes: Get out of debt Have an awesome career and financial future Navigate tricky social pickles, like talking about money with your boyfriend or girlfriend, splitting the bill (or not!) with your friends Unless you have a free ride or parents with deep pockets, don't finance a fancy college degree if it means years of debt. How to network like a mo-fo The critical reason everyone needs a "fuck off fund" (the reasons are more serious than you think) Full transcript of the episode here: https://www.wealthysinglemommy.com/broke-millennial-financial/

In this engaging title, Cat Callan (French Women Don’t Sleep Alone) observes how our society has lost regard for charm and the joy that it contributes to our daily lives. It seems that Tinder and “Netflix and Chill” have replaced the subtle and intoxicating process of getting to know someone new; a splurge on fresh flowers for our table is deemed wasteful; and conversation on a need-to-know basis has replaced the deliciously flirtatious volleying that comes with more relaxed encounters. Cat Callan is herself charming, and can expound on several talking points, including: · Why French women don’t date · How to bring charm into your home on a budget · Why the French are not goal-oriented in their relationships · How to go gray and stay alluring well after fifty · How French women sustain tension and passion in long-term relationships · 8 ways to slow down and bring charm into our lives About THE PARISIAN CHARM SCHOOL In an age where potential relationships are pursued with the swipe of a finger, conversations consist of emoji-filled texts, and dinner and a movie have been replaced by “Netflix and chill,” the notion of “charm” seems like a relic of a bygone era. Yet, if we reintroduce charm into our lives – in the way we consume, in the way we socialize, and in the way we approach relationships – we can become more mindful of an element of beauty and mystery that we were previously blind to and which, in turn, makes us more alluring ourselves. In PARISIAN CHARM SCHOOL: French Secrets for Cultivating Love, Joy, and That Certain je ne sais quoi (a TarcherPerigee Hardcover; on sale January 2, 2018, ISBN 978-0-143-130963), bestselling author Jamie Cat Callan reveals how her interactions with Parisian women, and their ability to incorporate charm into seemingly all aspects of their lives, showed her how this unassuming attribute was integral to their irresistible appeal. In this engaging guide to cultivating inner beauty, mystique and je ne sais quoi, Callan shows readers: · The allure of French self-reliance · Why French women prefer dinner parties to dating · The art of French flirtation · How French women sustain tension and passion in long-term relationships Filled with advice and insights from Parisian women, PARISIAN CHARM SCHOOL reveals how we can cultivate charm in all aspects of our lives so that we can embrace more love, passion, and joy in our relationships with others and with ourselves. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jamie Cat Callan is the author of the bestselling books French Women Don't Sleep Alone, Bonjour, Happiness! and Ooh La La! French Women's Secrets to Feeling Beautiful Every Day. Her books have been published in twenty-one countries and have been featured in major magazines, including The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Time. Jamie makes her home in New York's Hudson Valley at La Belle Farm, where she and her husband have created a little bit of France and grow lavender, sunflowers and produce their own brand of French sparkling apple cider.

THE FEMINIST’S GUIDE TO RAISING A LITTLE PRINCESS: How to Raise a Girl Who’s Authentic, Joyful, and Fearless – Even If She Refuses to Wear Anything but a Pink Tutu (a TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale November 11th, 2017) by Devorah Blachor. In this title inspired by her viral New York Times Motherlode piece “Turn Your Princess-Obsessed Toddler into a Feminist in Eight Easy Steps,” Blachor offers insight and humor to all those who cringe each morning when their daughters refuse to wear anything that isn’t pink. Using personal anecdotes and playful essays, Blachor explores how mothers can raise their daughters in a society that pressures girls and women to bury their own needs, conform to unrealistic beauty standards, and sacrifice their own passions. With amusing – yet reassuring! - interviews with the formerly princess-obsessed, THE FEMINISTS GUIDE TO RAISING A LITTLE PRINCESS tackles important concepts while offering comic relief to concerned parents of budding little princesses. The author is based overseas, however, is available for interviews and willing to call in from Skype.. Below my signature, you will see a q&a with the author. Please let me know if you would like to schedule an interview, or if you need anything else from me. I look forward to hearing from you! Check out the TarcherPerigee Blog About the Author: Devorah Blachor is a New York Times Motherlode columnist and also writes for The Huffington Post, McSweeney's, The Hairpin, Redbook, Mommyish, Good Housekeeping, and The Rumpus, among other websites and magazines. Blachor's husband Matt Rees is an award-winning journalist and novelist. Their children Cai and Mari provide endless material for humor and essays. In Conversation with Devorah Blachor, author of THE FEMINIST’S GUIDE TO RAISING A LITTLE PRINCESS, Devorah will talk about the following: 1. What inspired you to write The Feminist’s Guide to Raising a Little Princess? When my three-year-old daughter Mari started loving pink and princesses, the irony was great. Here I was, a committed feminist who favored oversized frumpy clothing and who wished the entire beauty industry would sink into the earth in a puff of silicone vapor. And here I had a walking toddler advertisement for tulle and sequins. I took my anxiety over what this might mean for Mari, and I turned it into a tongue-and-cheek satirical article called “Turn Your Princess-Obsessed Toddler Into a Feminist in Eight Easy Steps”. It was published in the New York Times Motherlode and it went viral. I realized I wasn’t alone. There were lots of mothers like me, who were committed to raising strong and independently minded daughters, and who were flummoxed by their daughters’ passion for tiaras and pink tutus. I started diving into this subject and that research evolved into the book. 2. Why did you want to steer your daughter away from pink and princesses and all things girly? The culture of “pink for girls” is antithetical to what we would want for our girls and boys. We don’t want our kids to be limited by other people’s perceptions of what they should and shouldn’t be. We want boys to play freely with dolls if that’s their desire, for example.. And if girls are encouraged to play with toys that are traditionally associated with girls, what does that mean for them as they grow up? Will they be less likely to pursue “male” professions like pilots or engineers? My fear was that the pink culture would restrict my daughter before she even reached adolescence. I had a deeper fear too. I spent many years living with long-term depression. I associated the “feminine” with my depression. I thought the strictures and expectations of being female had contributed to my losing my spark when I was a teenager - a spark that I didn’t get back for many years. I didn’t want that to happen to my daughter. 3. How – or why – did she gravitate towards it anyway? If you’ve ever met a toddler, you’ve probably noticed how strong-willed they are. I mean, they are REALLY determined. Meanwhile, as parents of toddlers, our energies are depleted. We’re absorbed with potty training and toddler aggression and getting them to eat foods that aren’t exclusively star shaped, and a whole host of other hilarious challenges. In the end, Mari’s love for princesses proved greater than my resistance to them. 4. Is it possible for parents to embrace their children’s princess obsession while also helping them reject the sexist messages that accompany so many of these princess-centered stories? For a full answer to this question, get back to me in about ten years. For now, my answer is: We can certainly try. Particularly as they get older (like, I certainly never had these conversations when Mari was three), we can show our daughters how destructive messages are buried in the stories of the regressive princess. Luckily, we can use the newer princesses to point out positive qualities as well. Moana is an amazing character, for example. In her bravery and her quest to save her people, she possesses the qualities we find in the heroes of Greek mythology. Merida demonstrates resilience, from Elsa we learn about overcoming fears, and Anna teaches us the enormous power of acceptance and forgiveness. We can totally use this whole princess thing to our advantage. 5. Why do you say that parental instinct should be honored more than the advice of others (including relatives, articles and books by parenting experts)? There is so much out there - the tips and the articles and the well-meaning relatives and the strangers on the street who tell you to button up your child’s sweater. Not to mention the “mommy wars” and the debate over parenting styles. The subtext of so much of this noise is judgement. Parents - and mothers in particular - constantly get the message that they’re doing it all wrong. If you listen to too many “experts”, you might lose your own voice amidst the noise. If you need advice or counsel, you can always choose a few people or sources you genuinely trust. But you can absolutely listen to yourself most of all. No one knows your child better than you do. 6. How can we help our daughters navigate a society that idealizes perfection? Most parents have had the experience of their child coming home from school, upset by their own mistakes or shortcomings. Maybe they got into trouble with the teacher, or did something that made other kids laugh, or didn’t perform well on the soccer pitch. These are precious moments of parenting, when you can give your child a ton of love and acceptance and let them know it’s ok not to be perfect, and that it’s definitely ok to make mistakes. In general, it’s great to tell your kids stories of people who failed and kept trying, because we want them to not get beaten down by failure or fear of failure. Equally important is what happens at home. When my kids act “unlovable” - when they test me and fight with each other and are needy and obnoxious - in those moments, I sometimes want to lie down or run away or drink wine. And while I can’t pretend I’ve never poured myself a glass in times of stress or yelled at them, I know that the way I handle these imperfect moments are important. Because if I can stop and breathe and accept my children when they are behaving in “unlovable” ways, they get the message that they don’t have to be perfect to be loved. It’s tricky. We’re all doing our best. And we should go easy on ourselves as well - as parents and as human beings, we shouldn’t expect perfection from ourselves either. 7. In your book, you interview a number of women who used to be princess-obsessed as girls. Did their obsession have any negative lasting effects? It’s one of my favorite parts of the book, because I was curious to know how it all turned out for girls who were obsessed with princesses. This “Princess Culture” is a relatively new thing, because Disney only started marketing the princess brand in 2000. The first generation of girls who fell down the “Disney Princess rabbit hole” are coming of age now. When I finally reached out to some of them for my book, I was heartened. Every single one seemed like an engaged, intelligent and interesting person. And they all had a good and humorous perspective on their princess days. 8. What do you hope readers will take away from your book? Accept your children, who will not be the people you expected but will be fabulous anyway. While you’re at it, accept yourself. And don’t forget to laugh. This parenting stuff can sometimes feel heavy and overwhelming. But if you have the right perspective, a lot of it is actually quite funny. Particularly very small little girls who are very passionate about princesses. http://www.devorahblachor.com/
Single mothers are about to become the majority. 40 percent of babies are now born to unmarried mothers, which themselves comprise 57 percent of millennial women. Yet, single mothers continue to face a myriad of unique challenges. As most can attest, financial pressures, mom guilt, and the struggle to find a work-life balance greatly intensify when they are forced to raise children on their own. Johnson experienced these hardships firsthand. After her husband moved out, leaving her broke, pregnant, and home alone with a toddler and another baby on the way, she couldn't find the advice she needed to thrive as a single professional woman and parent. But just two years later, Johnson was a successful entrepreneur providing this much-needed advice to other single moms on her immensely popular blog, WealthySingleMommy. In her new book, Johnson offers this invaluable counsel to the 10 million single American moms seeking personal and professional success, and advises them on how to: · Say ‘no!’ to alimony, and even child support · Dismiss the mom guilt many have about returning to work (Research shows that “a mother’s education and financial achievements have a greater impact on her children than sheer hours spent together”) · Navigate dating and introduce children to new love interests · Avoid the biggest mistakes single moms make when it comes to saving for college and retirement · Co-parent with a reluctant or absentee ex Full of practical advice and inspiration from Emma’s life, as well as other successful single moms, this is a must-have resource for any single mom.
Peter Zheutlin (pronounced ZOYT-Lynn) "Rescued is a wide-ranging and intensely moving meditation on sharing one's life with adopted dogs. Peter Zheutlin is one of the few journalists who have taken on the complex world of animal rescue and actually gotten it right." —Bronwen Dickey, author of Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon September is Puppy Mill Awareness Month October is Adopt-A-Dog Month November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month “The canine overpopulation problem is vast -- there are over a million strays living on the streets of Houston alone,” writes New York Times-bestselling author Peter Zheutlin in chapter 1 from his new book RESCUED: What Second-Chance Dogs Teach us About Living with Purpose, Loving with Abandon, and Finding Joy in the Little Things (on sale October 3, 2017; TarcherPerigee paperback). Zheutlin has considerable on the ground experience with Houston’s stray dog problem and has worked closely with the local shelters and rescue organizations there, including the SPCA of Brazoria County (which was evacuated today due to the failing levee) and Houston’s Shaggy Dog Rescue. Peter will also talk about pet loss, abandonment, and rescue efforts in Texas. About the book: In this follow up to Rescue Road (which spent five consecutive months on the New York Times bestseller list), Zheutlin interweaves heartwarming and humorous stories, lessons, and advice from countless families who have welcomed second-chance dogs into their homes and the transformative effect of these adoptions. Inspiring anecdotes from the book include: · the left-for-dead dogs Noah and Noelle who were abandoned in Houston’s notorious Melrose Park and found second-life chances in Brooklyn, NY and Massachusetts, respectively; · how a rescue dog in a Florida prison program helped one ex-convict get his life back on track, · a Connecticut community that found therapeutic comfort in the local dogs following 9/11 and Sandy Hook, · when dogs help empty nesters, sixty-somethings, and seniors find greater energy, keep mentally fit, and live with renewed vigor, · and an NFL player who purposefully sought out a “hard-to-adopt” dog from his local shelter who had been overlooked, among many others. This book perfectly captures the lifelong friendship, humorous non-Hallmark moments, and endearing quirks and characteristics of these once-lost souls that will resonate with any pet owner. “Fun, insightful, straightforward advice that can make your family life happier.” – KJ Dell’Antonia, New York Times Well Family columnist "I ask three things of the books I read. I want to learn something, I want to laugh, and, when a book is really special, I get to forge a personal connection with a writer for as long as I turn the pages. Catherine Pearlman has given me all three in this book, and much more. She’s given me a resource I will refer back to over and over again, both as a writer and a parent." – Jessica Lahey, Author, New York Times bestseller The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed About IGNORE IT! Kids have an uncanny knack for knowing the exact combination of actions necessary to drive their siblings – and parents – to their knees. Whether they delight in asking “why” ad nauseum, relish the hysteria they can provoke in their sister with an imperceptible glance, or thrill at the nightly pre-bath chase, our kids know how to push our limits. Faced with similar scenarios, many parents will resort to yelling or giving in, but it turns out these responses only make this irritating behavior worse. That’s why leading parenting expert Catherine Pearlman suggests a seemingly unconventional, yet remarkably effective approach in IGNORE IT! How Selectively Looking the Other Way Can Decrease Behavioral Problems and Increase Parenting Satisfaction (a TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale August 8, 2017). Drawing on her own experience with her children and the success stories of her clients, Pearlman demonstrates how selectively ignoring not only relieves parents from nagging, but also allows kids to actually learn from their mistakes. In this easy-to-navigate guidebook, readers will learn: How to eliminate problem behavior in just a few days What behaviors are appropriate to ignore, and what to do when ignoring is not an option How to use time-outs effectively, so they don’t become a battle of wills How to create a reward system that actually works What to do when mom and dad are not on the same page when it comes to discipline An essential toolkit for frustrated, stressed-out parents, IGNORE IT! offers actionable, proven techniques that will help readers improve their kids’ behavior and put the joy back in parenting. First of all, how random that my colleague Erin Lowrey, leading expert on Millennials and their money and author of the new-this-week Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together, and fellow money blogger, lives across the street from me in Astoria, Queens?! How to network like a mo-fo The critical reason everyone needs a "fuck off fund" (the reasons are more serious than you think)

I usually share articles of value on ZEN commuter, but this one was too good to pass up. It talks about 7 ways to buy more consciously. It is from Jennifer Lacovelli who wrote for Guideposts Magazine online. Adapted from: Simple Giving: Easy Ways to Give Every Day. Copyright © 2015 by Jennifer Iacovelli. Published by TarcherPerigee, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Used by Permission. What exactly does it mean to shop with a conscience? There are several factors to consider and questions you might ask yourself while shopping online or in a store, including: Where was the product made? Who made the product? Are the workers treated fairly and ethically? What kind of carbon footprint is the product leaving behind? Is the product safe for the environment? To be fair, you are not always going to be able to find this information and you might not have the time to do the research. But I would still encourage you to make shopping with a conscience a priority--big box stores may be convenient, but they are not always the best places to find products made with the highest ethical standards in mind. Here are some basic rules of thumb for you to use the next time you shop. You can pick one and start from there or simply keep all of them in mind the next time you purchase a product. 1) Shop locally. Supporting local businesses is good for the economy and helps your local community and neighbors and you can actually get to know the shopkeepers and learn more about the products they sell and the companies they work with. 2) Look for fair trade products. Fair trade, in its simplest form, is a movement to provide fair prices to producers of goods in developing countries, with the goal of reducing poverty, treating workers in an ethical way, and promoting environmentally sustainable practices. You've probably seen fair trade coffee in your local grocery store or coffee shop. When you purchase that coffee, you know that the farmers who produced the coffee beans--most likely in a remote part of a developing country--received a fair price for their crop. Purchasing fair trade products can actually change the lives of an entire family. By buying fair trade, we support businesses that provide education for children and offer jobs to women. 3) Find products that give back. Because of the arduous and sometimes expensive process involved in becoming fair trade certified, some companies use the same basic principles or build a giving component directly into their products. Gifts that give back often become popular during the holiday season or during months dedicated to raising awareness for certain causes, such as breast cancer awareness month in October, but you can find products that give back year round. 4) Consider the environmental impact. Research the products and companies from which you typically purchase. If a company doesn't disclose where the products are made, take a moment to contact the company and ask. Another way to research the products and companies you buy from is to look up their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs online. If one doesn't exist or is extremely hard to find, that is your first red flag. While a company's CSR program is largely self-regulated, it can tell you how dedicated the company is to being responsible and accountable for social and environmental issues. 5) Create a plan. It can be overwhelming to think about making many changes all at once. You don't have to throw out everything in your cupboard of cleaning supplies if you are concerned about environmental effects. Rather, as you run out of a product, replace it with a more eco-friendly version. Step by step, these small decisions will become more of a habit over time. 6) Choose a cause. As you plan, it might be helpful to determine whether your cause is environmental, a focus on social good, or something else. Having a passion for what you are supporting can make you feel even better about your purchase. You might decide to start focusing on finding products that support your local economy before you start looking at purchasing gifts with a more global focus. There is no right or wrong approach. 7) Share your passion with others. When giving a gift that supports your cause, be sure to explain to the recipient why this particular gift is so special. Tell them how the gift affects people and communities locally and globally. Encourage your friends and family to shop consciously as well. Teach them how to make better purchasing decisions and share your tools and resources with them.

Finding The Blue Sky: A Mindful Approach to Choosing Happiness Here and Now with Joseph EmetAired Sunday, 2 October 2016, 10:00 PM ETMost of us have a habitual way of thinking that we have developed over our lifetimes. And many times, these ingrained thought patterns directly impact our emotional well-being. Yet, what we often fail to realize is that it is possible to improve our mood by changing our habits. In FINDING THE BLUE SKY: A Mindful Approach to Choosing Happiness Here and Now (a TarcherPerigee paperback; on sale October 4, 2016), Dharma teacher and author Joseph Emet (Buddha’s Book of Meditation) asserts that we can cultivate happiness by replacing our negative thought processes with positive ones.Acknowledging that sorrow and suffering should be embraced as a natural part of life, the author shows readers how to use multiple mindfulness techniques to foster happiness even when life is far from perfect. These practices will help readers to:* Retell their personal narrative * Incorporate moments of pleasure into each day * Identify and omit the destructive habits that we assume will bring us happiness * Understand how emotional states impact the way we experience the world * Determine real needs from wants, and learn how to express them * Counteract the daily indoctrination of the media * Practice mindful laziness * Experience agelessness by being in the momentWith guided meditations, exercises for developing beneficial habits, and timeless wisdom from Buddhist masters, FINDING THE BLUE SKY is a compassionate guide full of practical advice for anyone seeking to live a more joyful and purposeful life.About the Guest Joseph EmetJOSEPH EMET trained with Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh at Plum Village in France and was made a Dharma teacher in Thich Nhat Hanh’s tradition.
