Roger Chapman, affectionately known as Chappo, has been making music since 1966. It was then that the British singer-songwriter emerged as the voice of his generation with the seminal Family band. In 1979 Chapman began a solo career and recorded his first solo album Chappo. His backing band became known as The Shortlist and he toured extensively in Europe. His four decade career has taken twists and turns through acclaimed albums and collaborations with artists such as Mike Oldfield. The song “Shadow On The Wall” from Oldfield's 1983 Crises album with Roger on vocals, was a huge hit. Life In The Pond draws a line under a period in which the 79-year-old had been absent from the studio but privately prolific. Twelve years since 2009's acclaimed rarities collection Hide Go Seek, “A true lionheart still roars,” enthused The Mirror, Life In The Pond reconnects the veteran with faces from his past – including ex-Family multi-instrumentalist John ‘Poli' Palmer as co-writer and producer – while taking the pulse of modern life. “Mostly it's anger at politicians that's kept me fired up,” says Chapman of the lyrics. “But I'm also influenced by daily happenings, world news, people, acquaintances. It's all in the lyrics.” As for the music, Life In The Pond joins the dots between Chapman's founding influences. “It's about nostalgia for the different musical styles that influenced my life. American rock from the '50s to now. British R‘n'B from the '60s, like Georgie Fame, The Stones, Zoot Money. Folk, blues, Motown, Stax, Blue Note jazz, Classical, Americana, and Country. A whole mess of influences…”That eclectic roll call won't surprise anyone who has followed Chappo through his fascinating career. Born in the Midlands city of Leicester, he told the Rock Legacy site that “I wasn't interested in the English version of rock ‘n' roll. All my heroes were American, like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, and Gene Vincent – that was the real stuff.”The 24-year-old singer joined The Farinas in 1966 and forged a dynamic writing partnership with lead guitarist Charlie Whitney. But the critical juncture came when the band renamed themselves, Family, moved down to London, and dreamt up a distinctive sound that swirled jazz, blues, folk, prog, and psychedelia into their classic 1968 debut album, Music In A Doll's House. “We didn't try to be different,” Chappo once shrugged. “It was never calculated. It was as naive and as honest as that.”Cherished by transatlantic fans, championed by DJ John Peel, and hitting UK#13 with the “Burlesque” single from 1972's acclaimed Bandstand, Family released seven albums before disbanding in 1973. Chappo didn't miss a beat, partnering with Whitney in Streetwalkers: a tougher Americana-influenced vehicle whose albums included 1976's hit, Red Card. “The name had nothing to do with hookers,” he reflects. “That was the input of shabby managers.”By 1979, this prolific singer-songwriter was ready to strike out solo with the Chappo album, and over four decades later, Life In The Pond ties all the threads together. Later, Mickey went to a state school for music, but the academic route was not for him and he left early to play in bands.   When he was 17 he joined the Scratch Band in Connecticut where he first gained recording experience. Next Mickey started to make the two hour train journey into Manhattan and eventually joined a band called Tom Dicky and the Desires. They were managed by music mogul Tommy Mottola who also managed Hall and Oates - big news in the early 1980s.   Impressed by Mickey, Mottola asked him to record Hall and Oates' new album ‘Private Eyes'. Around the same time Mickey met top producer Bob Clearmountain who'd just found a new singer called Bryan Adams. Within months Mickey had recorded Adams' second album ‘You Want It You Got It'.   Next thing Mickey's out on tour with Hall and Oates. All this was in 1981 when Mickey was 25. This was his big-break year and he's never really looked back. The calls started to come in thick and fast - Tom Waits, Cher, Tina Turner, Los Lobos.   Mickey worked with Hall and Oates through till 1986, since then he's been Bryan Adams' regular drummer. He says “I get to sound more like me on Bryan's records than on anyone else's”.       He's also had considerable success recording and touring with The Cult. He played on their 1989 album ‘Sonic Temple' which sold three million.   During the period he was playing with Hall & Oates, Curry met producer Bob Clearmountain, who had recently begun working with a young Bryan Adams, and appeared on Adams' second album, You Want It You Got It. His appearance on nearly all of Adams' subsequent albums coincided with his rise to prominence. They are no stranger to festival stages, having performed at Groovin The Moo, Laneway, Party in the Paddock, Listen Out and Festival of the Sun. Episode 112: Terra Incognita: Mapping the Afterlives of French Nuclear Imperialism in the Sahara   How can aesthetic works and humanities training help us to apprehend the danger that nuclear toxicity poses to ecological health and human life?   Taking off from the premise that French maps of the Sahara Desert have long served to enable military occupation and violent erasure, this podcasts explores how aesthetic works such as film and photography can act as countercartographies that push back against the dangerous idea of the desert as empty space.   Beginning in 1960, the French military carries out seventeen nuclear bomb detonations at two secret bases they built for this purpose in the Algerian Sahara. The desert sites near Reggane and In Ekker were selected for their supposed remoteness and emptiness – according to the French state, for purposes of safety, cleanliness, and containment. Of course, the Sahara is anything but empty, and these deadly bombs were anything but safe, clean, or contained. The term 'afterlife' recognizes that nuclear imperialism is not a past problem, but a present and future one.   In this talk, Dr. Jill Jarvis, Assistant Professor in the Department of French at Yale University, discusses maps and images taken in and around the village of Mertoutek, whose residents were in the direct path of radioactive cloud released during the underground detonation of the bomb named 'Béryl' at nearby In Ekker in 1962. A striking document of this disaster and its enduring impact is the short documentary film At(h)ome, by Elisabeth Leuvrey, inspired by landscape photographs taken of the site by Bruno Hadjih. Leuvrey's and Hadjih's works combine image and sound to chart an archival blank zone where old taboos on naming French colonial violence intersect with present state secrets. As it stands, aesthetic works – photography, film, poetry, narrative, song – might be among the forms best attuned to register this toxic afterlife, and to train us to recognize and reckon with nuclear imperialism much differently than do our governments and legal systems.   This episode is part of “Health and Humanities in the Maghrib” a lecture series by the American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS), organized by the Centre d'Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) and the Centre d'Études Maghrébines en Algérie (CEMA), in close collaboration with the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIM). It was recorded on the 19th of November 2020 between Oran, New Haven (CT), Ithaca (NY) and Tunis. Dr. Samia Henni, Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at Cornell University, moderated the lecture and debate.
