Dee Lynn is very new to this whole ‘having ADHD' thing. Diagnosed just this last summer, the patient support specialist for ADHD Online knew what ADHD was before joining the telemedicine healthcare company. Her son was diagnosed in grade school. But it wasn't until she was interacting with patients on a daily basis that she started to see the many different ways the disorder can show up for people. Especially for women.    Like so many adults diagnosed later in life, Dee Lynn can now see plenty of signs of her ADHD when she looks back at her childhood. Raised in the 80s – a time when mental health was rarely discussed – the healthcare provider struggled with focus and attention and was afraid to ask for the additional help she knew she needed.    Despite the whirlwind nature of her journey, Dee now feels a huge sense of relief and by working with her primary care doctor and her therapist, is figuring out the right treatment plan to help her move forward in life with the support she needs.   Refocused, Together is a collection of 31 stories told throughout the 31 days of October, a part of our commitment to ADHD Awareness Month. The last few years have been heaped with uncertainty and tough on our ability to focus. Brain fog, distracted attention and the inability to just sit down and do the thing feel like the new norm. But for some adults, this overwhelming feeling isn't situational. It's brain chemistry.ADHD — a condition we often associate with kids — is being diagnosed in a growing number of adults, who are often both surprised and relieved to find out they have a reason for the lack of focus.Women, in particular, are being diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adulthood because we've learned the way ADHD shows up in girls can be different and less visible than how it shows in up in boys.Listen back to a conversation that MPR News host Angela Davis had earlier this year with a woman who was diagnosed at age 30 with ADHD and a psychiatrist who pioneered treating ADHD in adults with mindfulness techniques. They'll talk about the signs of ADHD in girls and women, how it's diagnosed and some tips to help manage the condition.   If you're looking for ways to understand and manage ADHD, here are a few more resources: ULCA Mindful App, ADDitude magazine, The ADHD Women's Wellbeing Podcast, short mindfulness videos from Dr. Lidia Zylowska's YouTube channel, MindfulRxADHD and mindfulness community classes from the University of Minnesota's Earl E. What the heck is CDS? Google that question and you find page after page of information on Credit Default Swaps or Controlled Dangerous Substances. But there is a CDS that is directly connected to ADHD and it's likely something you've never heard of before.   So what is Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome and what are the symptoms? How is it similar to ADHD and how is it different? CDS is not an officially recognized diagnosis in the DSM-5. It's currently what's called a clinical construct - a term used in psychology to define a group of behaviors.    Researchers, including today's guest Dr. Zoe Smith, have been working for years to get the construct recognized and there is still so much we don't know about CDS. Without an official diagnosis, it can be hard for providers to identify the signs and symptoms of CDS and Dr. Z is joining us to share what we do know about this relatively unknown comorbid condition.    Zoe R. Smith, PhD (she/her) is an assistant professor of psychology at Loyola University Chicago with research interests in the development of culturally-responsive assessments and interventions for adolescents. She is the leader of ACCTION Lab, an organization that is dedicated to community-based assessment and intervention development for youth with ADHD and Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome. She has authored or co-authored numerous scholarly articles on ADHD and CDS and served with 12 other scholars beginning in 2021 in a work group to evaluate current knowledge and identify key directions in the study of sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT).   Instagram: @ACCTIONLab X(Twitter): @DrZoeRSmith TikTok: @ACCTION.Lab   Add us on Social Media:   Instagram: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline Twitter: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline   Email the show: hello@refocusedpod.com   We appreciate you taking the time to listen! This week, we continue our look at ADHD and depression with our guest, friend of the pod and Mentavi Health and ADHD Online business development representative Ian Hoefelmeyer.    As a kid, Ian was labeled the ‘ADHD kid' and even though his teachers observed some of ADHD traits, it wasn't until years later when he was struggling in college that he sought out a diagnosis and then medication. Like so many with ADHD, Ian also struggled with some of ADHD's comorbidities including depression and it was the sudden isolation of the pandemic, combined with stressors at work, that added fuel to his most recent bout of the mood disorder.    This candid conversation is a reminder of all the different ways depression can show up in a person's life and the power masking can have on a person's life. The comorbid connection between ADHD and depression is strong. While both ADHD and depression involve issues related to mood, concentration, and motivation, they do differ. ADHD is a lifelong neurological disorder that impairs executive functions, attention, and self-control; depression is a mood disorder that causes sustained periods of unprovoked sadness, irritability, fatigue, and hopelessness. Lakeisha Love is back for part two of our conversation on ADHD & depression. In today's episode, we're going to talk about the brain, depression awareness, and we'll spend a good portion of the show talking about treatment methods.   Having witnessed patients grappling with ADHD challenges in primary care, Lakeisha Love recognized the limitations of diagnosis and treatment in that setting. She decided to align with ADHD Online due to the founders' personal experiences with ADHD, which drove them to establish a telemedicine company that could offer global accessibility to proper diagnosis and treatment. Lakeisha was drawn to the mission of dismantling mental health stigma surrounding ADHD and believed in the profound positive impact that tailored care could bring to individuals' adult lives.   This episode discusses the connection between ADHD, depression, suicide and suicide ideation. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, there is help. Call or text the number 988 to connect directly to the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This week we are joined by friend of the show Ashley Jacobs, who is graciously sharing real life examples about how ADHD & OCD play out in her life. We've just finished back-to-back episodes with Dr. Marcy Caldwell talking about ADHD & Anxiety, and we thought that it would be good to revisit some of the things in those episodes that resonated with us as neurodivergents. Joining us is Jaye Lin, an ADHD coach, educator, speaker, and podcaster based in the Seattle area. Like many of us, she too has dealt with anxiety. In fact, before her ADHD diagnosis, she was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. Also joining the show is Phil Rodemann, the show's Coordinating Producer, who also has dealt with anxiety many years longer than his ADHD.   Jaye Lin was the first and only ADHD-trained peer coach at Google, where she also co-founded and co-led the ADHD-Women@Google ERG. She received her coaching training from ADDCA and an e-Learning Instructional Design graduate certificate from the University of Washington. She also has a BS in Hospitality Management from San Jose State University, along with a culinary diploma from the Professional Culinary Institute, and is currently writing a cookbook for those with ADHD.   Resources mentioned in the podcast: Website: The Monoceros Initiative  Book: “The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom” by Don Miguel Ruiz Jaye's Podcast: Now Presenting: ADHD   Add us on Social Media!   Instagram: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline Twitter: @lindsayguentzel @refocusedpod @adhdonline   Email the show: hello@refocusedpod.com   We appreciate you taking the time to listen! Can you identify with how Kim Livingston felt when she wanted to clean, but was somehow unable to attack the chaos? Simple tasks seemed complex because she couldn't find a starting point, and didn't see a clear set of steps ahead. Let's set aside the judgment that the title generates and in the nearly 20 years since this all took place Kim has had plenty of time to reflect back on that moment. She has recently released her first book, “Walks Like a Duck: How a Mom with ADHD Led Her Neurodiverse Family to Peace of Mind” and in this episode we get to talk to Kim about the book, her thoughts about her reverse-diagnosis, and what she wishes people knew or understood better about ADHD.   Kim R. Livingston teaches English at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, Illinois, and is an advocate of community colleges everywhere. Growing up, Kim's family was neurodivergent, and three decades of teaching have made Kim an even more passionate advocate of neurodiversity. Eating Disorders Awareness Week is underway and today's show is our commitment to supporting the incredible work being done to raise awareness on the impact disordered eating can have, both for our ADHD community and society as a whole. I'll just be upfront here, this episode does not focus entirely on ADHD and eating disorders. Instead, our team made the decision to look at how eating disorders impact our society as a whole and what's being done to improve how we diagnosis and treat eating disorders. It's estimated that 9% of the world's population has an eating disorder and it is also one of the deadliest mental illnesses, making Eating Disorders Awareness Week something we needed to support.  Joining us on the show is registered dietician nutritionist Hilmar Wagner from The Emily Program, a nationally-recognized program focused on using personalized treatment plans to help patients find lifetime recovery from their eating disorders. Hilmar works with both patients and providers through his role at The Emily Program and we're diving into the big picture impact of eating disorders, what's changed over the years when it comes to diagnosing and treating eating disorders and also looking at the state of care for people seeking treatment for an eating disorder. The New Year can make even the most pessimistic person feel some optimism and if you made a resolution, there's a very good chance you have one of these -- losing weight, eating healthier and exercising more -- on your list. They were the top 3 resolutions Americans made this year, according to Statistia.com.  To get you started on your journey, we wanted to dive into the relationship between the ADHD brain and food. Becasuse it is incredibly complex and we know disordered eating is a commorbidity many people with ADHD deal with. But it goes well beyond that and there are conversations happening right now that explore the connection between what we eat and how our brain works -- the gut-brain connection. These complex conversations are ones Dr. Marylin James is having every day with her patients, through her practice Haven Family Health in Jacksonville, Florida and through her work as a telehealth physician at ADHD Online. In 2021 I got an ADHD diagnosis and answered a lot of my own personal burning questions about myself. Why am I so impulsive? Why do I feel like such an imposter? Am I lazy? Ever since that moment, and even before, I have been focused on the unspoken connection between MLMs and Neurodivergent people. How are we targeted? Why do we jump from one to the next? How much lipstick does one really need? So I asked someone who has a lot more knowledge about the subject, Layla Touchet, LPC, NCC, PSC to talk to us about why those of us with ND would be more drawn to MLMs, and how the MLMs use our symptoms to keep us stuck. Do I have ADHD or not? This has become so confusing! According to ADHD Online, I have a medical diagnosis of ADHD. According to Barbara Hunter's analysis of my BRIEF-A assessment, my executive functioning indicates that I do NOT have ADHD. Who is right? I took my questions to a psychologist in Cincinnati for a final answer. Why? Well, first, I want to give good recommendations to the Organize 365® community. If ADHD Online is not a good resource, I don't want to refer you to them. Second, I want to continue to do executive function research related to ADHD and organization, so I want to know if I actually have ADHD or not as I go into that project. Organization is a learnable skill. If we learn the skill of organizing, can we mitigate or eliminate the effects of ADHD? In this episode, I share with you my story of gathering supporting information from my childhood, taking additional assessments, and speaking with the psychologist to get the final answer. I explain the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis. I also share how in the process, we determined first that I do NOT have dyslexia as I have always been told. Two interesting things were the clinchers for my final answer. One was speeding tickets, and the other was how I handle money and debt. Listen to this episode to hear how in the beginning, the psychologist believed there was no way that I could have ADHD and how this all came together to finally find out if I do have ADHD. First I took the assessment from ADHD Online and was told that I DO have a medical ADHD diagnosis. In this episode, I'm talking with my friend Barbara Hunter about whether she thinks I have ADHD... or not. She gave me The BRIEF-A to make her determination. This is the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function® Adult Version. The BRIEF-A is given in three parts: I took the assessment. Then both my husband, Greg, and my chief of staff, Stephanie, took the assessment to give their perspective on me. Barbara walked through the sections of the test with me to explain what the various sections mean and my results compared to Greg and Stephanie's opinions of me, as well as ways to improve my executive functioning in some areas. The final result? According to The BRIEF-A, Barbara says that this current assessment of my executive function says that I do NOT have ADHD. So, where do I go from here? I contacted a doctor in the Cincinnati area to do more testing so I can definitively find out if I have ADHD or not. More to come! Looking for more information on ADHD and Organization? Do I have ADHD? My mom doesn't think I have ADHD. I didn't think I had ADHD. At one point, I adamantly opposed people who suggested I had ADHD. But, in more recent years, I have thought: Maybe I do have ADHD? When I would organize women in the Cincinnati area, many would start their appointments by telling me that they had or thought they had ADHD. My kids received their ADHD diagnoses when they were children and attended Springer School and Center for many years. I was a teacher and I saw many kids receive their ADHD diagnosis and the support put in place for them. My book How ADHD Affects Home Organization came out of this time of discovery and research about ADHD and research about organization. (By the way, you can now get the audiobook for free on our new Organize 365® ADHD Playlist!) People who have ADHD need more structure and support. It's not an issue of intellect. It's an issue of executive functioning. Everyone learns at a different pace and organization is a learnable skill. It's just that people who have ADHD tend to need a person to help put structure in place for them to learn the skill of organizing. In this episode, I fill you in on my journey of learning about ADHD and then coming to the point of deciding to find out if I actually have ADHD... or not. Many things came together recently for me to reach this point personally. I have done some biohacking with my Oura Ring and Apple Watch. I began a partnership and series of webinars with ADHD Online and learned more about their services. But, it was my recent meeting with Barbara Hunter that pushed me over the edge. She was at Springer School and Center for over 20 years. I took any class they offered as my kids were students there. They often bring in top-notch experts in conjunction with Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Barbara is now doing executive function coaching through her company Integrated Learning Designs. In this meeting, we were discussing how there are many resources for students and employees with ADHD, but no one is really addressing how ADHD affects your home life. So, then, I pondered out loud whether I actually have ADHD or not. Do I really want to know? What would it change if I knew? I wouldn't medicate for ADHD at this point in my life if I have a diagnosis because I have skills and systems already in place to make my life run smoothly. What would knowing that I have or do not have ADHD do for me? What I really want to know is my level of executive functioning and how to optimize that, whether I have ADHD or not! Barbara tells me there's a test for that! It's called The BRIEF-A. I was in! Just in our casual conversation, Barbara saw signs in me that pointed towards an ADHD diagnosis. And I saw more signs. I always had a floating "C" in school, I'm a talker, I interrupt people, I'm a busybody who doesn't vacation well, and I can't sit to watch TV without a puzzle to work on or laundry to fold. So, I made arrangements to take the test with Barbara. Before that, still unsure of if I really wanted to know the answer, I decided with some trepidation and some encouragement from Joey to first take the test from ADHD Online to see what they had to say. The results? According to ADHD Online and their assessment, I have ADHD. Next week, I talk about my results from The BRIEF-A and my meeting with Barbara Hunter. How can we raise kids that are independent, confident, kind, empathetic and happy? By talking to them. Sounds easy, right?  According to Rebecca Rolland, it can be -- as long as we use the right kind of talk. Tyler Dorsey was ahead of the curve. As a fifth grader, the 90s baby was diagnosed with ADHD -- well before the majority of girls who wouldn't be diagnosed well into adulthood.  By the time she made it to college, she knew how ADHD was showing up in her life and with a non-negoitable pushing her ahead, her spot on the volleyball team, she put her own boundaries into place and started to see herself thriving. As the founder of Focus Forward, Tyler helps people of all ages change the mindset on how they view and manage their ADHD. And what started as a get-to-know-you conversation ahead of Tyler's first webinar on September 21st quickly turned into Tyler introducing Lindsay to the power of a good, old-fashioned mindset shift in embracing the thrive and retiring the survive.  Check out Tyler's work online. Back to school, back to school, to prove to my ADHD brain (and all the doubters) that I'm not a fool! It can be tough for the ADHD brain to get through transitions, regardless of the size or importance. So how does this struggle affect students heading back to school? Sure, it's something we do an awful lot growing up. But does it ever get easier? Not without putting in some work.  Christina Kantzavelos is a licensed psychotherapist and writer based in southern California, whose work focuses on treating and advocating for those with chronic illnesses -- like lyme disease -- and physcial, development and age-related disabilities. She also has ADHD and shared insights and workarounds from both her time working as a psychotherapist and her own experience growing up attending a school system that didn't work for her and what happened after she looked outside traditonal school (spoiler alert: she thrived). Transitions can be tough for everyone. But for people with ADHD, it is something that can completely throw everything into chaos. And it doesn't matter the size or magnitude. It can be an everyday issue for people with ADHD. So what is it about ADHD and the trouble with transitioning? Where does that struggle come from? And how do we address it? Dr. Gayle Jensen Savoie is the Division Chief for Psychology and Teletherapy for ADHD Online and has been working and has been more than 30 years of experience working with adolescents with ADHD. It was Sunday evening. Monday's podcast wasn't done and Lindsay had a choice to make. Pull another all-nighter to get it done or be honest about the struggles she's been facing since launching Refocused with Lindsay Guentzel back in May.  Maybe it was because she was tired. Maybe it was because she knew she couldn't keep up the routine she had unintentionally developed. Maybe it was because she was actually comfortable asking for help. Yay, growth!!! Whatever the reason, Lindsay woke up Monday and was honest with everyone -- the latest episode of her podcast wasn't done. No cockamamie excuse, no lies. Just ownership and a plan to make sure it doesn't happen again. And then she decided to pivot. She owed those waiting an epsiode so she decided to record it live. With an audience (sort of, it was virtual but the pressure was there).  And the episode she created on the fly -- with the help of Keith Boswell -- is without a doubt better than anything she could have stressed about in the wee hours of the morning earlier that day. Topics include: breaking the history of little white lies, the power of deadlines, hyperfocusing on the wrong thing and the trouble with ADHD and friendships.  Social Media Profiles Instagram: @lindsayguentzel @adhdonline @refocusedpod Twitter: @lindsayguentzel @adhd_online @refocusedpod For more information on ADHD Online and ADHD assessments, medical management and teletherapy.  Email Lindsay: podcast@adhdonline.com.

Dr. Muhammad is the Clinical Division Chief at ADHD Online. She joined the company when they were first starting up back in August of 2020, and she focuses on individualized care of her online patients and believes that ADHD can become a patient's asset rather than a deficit when properly understood and treated. Dr. Muhammad is board certified in general preventive medicine and public health. She is licensed in multiple states, and lives in Cypress, TX, with her husband and two kids. We talk all about the process of getting an online diagnosis and what's involved, and how clients are often surprised to be working with real medical providers and not just bots.  We also talk about unique barriers for women when it comes to seeking a diagnosis on their own, not to mention the subsequent treatment, and how telemedicine is filling the gaps for patients who might not have immediate access to knowledgeable providers in their area. It blends the logical disciplines of data extraction and analysis with the out-of-the-box creativity of which data to unearth, which types of clues to search for within the data mounds, and how to use those insights to your advantage. Key Takeaways -Understanding the basic philosophical concepts behind successful data driven marketing, and that they often have very little to do with the data itself. -Recognizing that there are many aspects to a successful data driven marketing approach that require constant assessment and refinement, rather than just one cookie cutter playbook. -Recognizing the early warning signs that your data driven marketing campaign may not be on track.
