In advance of the UN Summit of the Future, Earth4All has released a new report detailing two possible futures for Sub-Saharan Africa this century. The report, "SDGs for All: Africa," uses Earth4All's state-of-the-art system dynamics model to chart possible pathways for SDG implementation in the region. Written in collaboration with notable African sustainability experts, the report emphasises the scale and urgency of economic transformation needed to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region. SDGs for All: Africa In the best-case scenario, called the "Giant Leap," Sub-Saharan Africa could see poverty drop from 500 million to 25 million people, hunger nearly eradicated, and universal access to education, clean water, and sustainable electricity. On the other hand, the "Too Little Too Late" scenario paints a grim picture where poverty rises to 900 million, hunger still affects 180 million, and over a billion people lack clean water. The Too Little Too Late scenario is based on existing policies in the region. These two scenarios highlight the critical importance of action this decade to drive five extraordinary turnarounds in the areas of poverty, inequality, empowerment, food, and energy. Key highlights from the modelling for Sub-Saharan Africa include: Poverty reduction: Under the Giant Leap scenario, poverty decreases dramatically from 500 million to 25 million people by 2100, compared to a rise to 900 million under the Too Little Too Late scenario. Hunger Eradication: Hunger is nearly eradicated in the Giant Leap, with undernourishment dropping to 20 million, in stark contrast to 180 million under the Too Little Too Late scenario. Education Access: The average schooling years increase to 13, up from 8 years under the Too Little Too Late scenario. Water Access: Universal water access is achieved by 2070, significantly improving from over one billion without access in the Too Little Too Late scenario. Electricity Access: Sustainable electricity access reaches over 95% by 2050, compared to 75% still lacking access under the Too Little Too Late scenario. Climate Mitigation: Carbon emissions are reach acceptable levels by 2040 as opposed to dangerous levels that push global temperatures even higher. Economic Growth: Decent work and economic growth see significant boosts, with unemployment falling to 50 million by 2100, compared to 150 million in the Too Little Too Late scenario. Workers' disposable income and GDP per capita also see substantial increases, doubling in comparison to the Too Little Too Late scenario. And inequality is greatly reduced with labour's share of GDP reaching 60% by 2040, thereby making Africa one of the most equal regions in the world The new research from Earth4All, an international team of economists and scientists, shows the policy levers needed to ensure that the SDGs are met in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2100. The report 'SDGs for All: Africa' equips policymakers with practical solutions designed to accelerate SDG implementation and to respond to the planetary emergency. It concludes that policymakers can step up the implementation of the SDGs by 2030 and beyond and achieve wellbeing for all. But this is only possible by enacting five 'extraordinary turnarounds' that break with current trends. "The challenge for Sub-Saharan Africa this century is that economic transformation must now take place in the shadow of a climate emergency. This is a breakthrough or breakdown moment for the continent. It teeters on the brink of two vastly different futures: one of transformative progress and one of deepening despair. As we approach the UN Summit of the Future this September, the time for bold, decisive action is now - to ensure a 'Giant Leap' towards a future where poverty and hunger are eradicated, and every individual has access to education, clean water, and sustainable energy. Our choices today will shape the destiny of millions. We must act, and we must act decisively." Said Jane Kabubo-M...

When the Russian Orthodox Church set up its own outpost in Africa in late 2021, just months before the invasion of Ukraine, it was considered a blatant challenge to the historic authority of the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa. It sparked a major split in the global Orthodox community. Moscow's move was in response to Alexandria's support for the newly independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine. But it was also an opportunity for Russia to try to extend its influence across the African continent. Lucy Ash hears how priests in Kenya have been lured into joining the Russian Orthodox Church and asks whether President Vladimir Putin's crusade for hearts and minds will succeed.

Food banks have operated for decades in North America and Europe. They are generally operated as non profits, connecting food businesses that have waste with individuals, families and charities that need food. In 2006 there was just one African food bank in Egypt. A second opened in South Africa in 2009. Today there are around twenty five across the continent. In this programme we look at how African countries have adapted food banks to their needs, and hear how they address criticisms that the food bank model itself is flawed when it comes to addressing food poverty. We ask Nairobi based reporter Michael Kaloki to spend a day with Food Banking Kenya, and its founder and CEO John Gathungu. Michael visits their warehouse storage, meets small holder farmers donating surplus food, and speaks to women living in some of Nairobi's informal settlements that rely on food donations. Ruth Alexander speaks to Elijah Addo, who founded one of Africa's first food banks in 2015, Food for All Africa in Ghana. Gaby Kafarhire at The Global FoodBanking Network, based in Chicago in the United States, talks about the particular challenges African food banks face. And researcher Gareth Haysom at the African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town shares his concerns about the current system. Presented by Ruth Alexander. Produced by Beatrice Pickup. [Note: Program originally aired in August 2016] In a speech delivered in 1971 in Cape Town, South Africa, Steve Bantu Biko proclaimed that the: “The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed.” This time-less expression is currently fueling grassroots organizing and resistance efforts in South Africa. We see the echoes of this axiom in movements across South Africa from the Rhodes Must Fall/Fees Must Fall uprisings to the organizational expressions of resistance through organizations such as Black First, Land First or Abahlali baseMjondolo [Shack Dwellers Movement] and Landless People's Movement; and outside of SA, with the Homeless Workers' Movement [Brazil]. Before we begin our conversation with Andile Mngxitama, it is important to hear and think with Steve Biko. One of the Africana world's foremost activist---thinkers, Steve Biko is mostly remembered through the work and ideas of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM). Although Steve Biko was not alone in forging the Black Consciousness Movement; he was nevertheless its most prominent leader, who with others guided the movement of student discontent into a political force unprecedented in the history of South Africa. As a consequence of his potent political mind and activity, he is inextricably linked the development and evolution of the Black Consciousness Movement, which spread across the African world, finding it's lasting expression in Afro Brazilian communities. To understand more about the life and contributions of Steve Biko, there is no other place to start than to read him, you can start by reading and thinking through I Write What I Like…but for now, we can listen to him #ThinkingBlackOutLoud. After thinking with Bantu Biko, we explore movement building in a ‘post' Apartheid SA, with Andile Mngxitama, a leading black consciousness thinker and organizer. He co-edited Biko Lives! Contesting the Legacies of Steve Biko, has published four essays in the New Frank Talk journals. He is frequent contributor to various multimedia outlets that explore Africa in general, South Africa specifically. It’s been 15 years since Blitz the Ambassador released his first record, Soul Rebel. Since then he has gone on to produce 7 additional albums, start his own independent label (Embassy MVMT), produce 2 short films, and produced the feature film The Burial of Kojo, which was released on Netflix on the 31st of March, with Ava DuVernay and ARRAY.
This interview took place after he screened his film at the New African Film Festival this past March in Silver Spring, Maryland. It was great to sit down again with Blitz, 12 years after I first interviewed him for allAfrica.com in May 2007. Then, he was among the first generation of African MCs making their presence known on the underground scene in the US. In that interview we spoke about how Pan African his music was, and how lyrically, he blended elements of African and the Diaspora. His music has evolved into a showcase of African and Diaspora influences, including collaborations with artists from across Africa and the Diaspora.
In this interview we again spoke about the Pan African perspectives and sounds that continue to be present in his music. Blitz attributes much of his outlook to his upbringing, the legacy of Kwame Nkrumah’s ideologies, and his experiences in the Pan African Studies Department at Kent State University.
Blitz the Ambassador also talks about his experiences with the entertainment industry in the U.S., and how he has managed to maintain creative control over his music and film projects. In this sense, Blitz the Ambassador is vigilant about the integrity of his work, acknowledging the importance of representation, and of creating your own narratives.

"You may be nonviolent, but I'm not gonna let these white people kill you”. A presentation with Charles Cobb on This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed. This week we are very pleased to present a presentation done some months ago at Firestorm Books with Charles E. Cobb, Jr.  Charles Cobb is a journalist, writer, and current senior analyst at allAfrica.com, which is “is a voice of, by and about Africa - aggregating, producing and distributing news and information from over 140 African news organizations and our own reporters to an African and global public.” Cobb has had a long career full of landmark moments, for example being the first Africa correspondent for NPR and being the first Black staff writer for National Geographic Magazine, among many other achievements. In this presentation, done on April 2nd 2018, Cobb talks about his 2014 book “This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed”, which details his work from 1962 to 1967 for the SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), the most influential youth and student organization during the Civil Rights Movement. He also fills in a much overlooked gap in the understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, that is, the lived experiences of Black people living in the rural South at this time, gives his insights on embedding in communities for social justice purposes, and draws lessons from those insights as they pertain to the current Movement for Black Lives. In this talk he is being interviewed by Carol, who is a long time comrade and friend. Announcements Week of International Support in Lead Up to Nationwide Prison Strike A call from a variety of groups to make some noise for the upcoming prison strike, kicking off on August 21st, 2018. This is a challenge to every anarchist, abolitionist, rebel and determined fighter against prison society and white supremacy in Amerikkka: 'Between Monday, July 16 and Saturday, July 21, we're calling on you to help unleash a concerted and spectacular array of solidarity actions before the upcoming prison strikes! Prepare now, bring mayhem everywhere! As you likely know, prisoners will strike from August 21st to September 9th. They anticipate guards and administrators to respond with violent reprisals, media distortions, and extended lockdowns. Defending the strikes from the outside is an essential component of its success. Don't wait; retaliation has already started and as August 21st approaches we expect to see transfers, preemptive lockdowns, and more. Outside support efforts, in collaboration with imprisoned rebels, have already begun. Jailhouse Lawyers Speak, IWOC, and other organizations are building phone trees, publishing call-outs, and mounting pressure campaigns. Another thing outside supporters can do is promote and set a stage for the strike. From July 16-21, we want to make an opening act that warms up the public consciousness and media landscape. If we're successful, it will also be a loudspeaker for the prisoners' call, blaring it past the censors, the mailroom pigs, and the dense walls of isolation and silence that prevent prisoners from knowing what's cooking in other states or facilities until it's already served up cold. The challenge before us is to do things so spectacular, creative, and unexpected that the mainstream media cannot neglect them. Hashtag: #prisonstrike2018. Use any means necessary to break that media blockade: take the streets, paint the town, disrupt the status quo, hack a site, get things lit, or go ahead and chuck your anarchist purity, resort to wooing celebrity endorsements, buying clever ads, or schmoozing your way into the news. Remember, the radical and independent outlets most likely to cover our activities exist mainly online. We need to leverage that coverage to force the big old media (the kind that gets into prisons: TV, radio, print editions of newspapers) to report this news due to fear-of-missing-out. The goal: get the phrase "Nationwide Prison Strike: 8/21-9/9" printed or spoken on the largest platform so prisoners can see it and no one outside can ignore it. So get out there and surprise us! Overwhelm amerikkka's hostile media environment and get the word into prisons large and small across the nation. ' For downloadable Sticker and Poster Graphics: https://supportprisonerresistance.noblogs.org/nationalprisonstrike2018/ Groups endorsing the 2018 Nationwide Prison Strike: Jailhouse Lawyers Speak Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee The Fire Inside Collective Millions for Prisoners The People's Consortium WNC Prison Strike Info Session If you're in the Asheville area, Tuesday the 17th from 5-7:30pm at Firestorm, Blue Ridge ABC is holding an info session about the prison strike. There'll be an introduction workshop to writing to prisoners followed by news about the strike, propaganda to take home and brainstorming on outreach methods we can take to get word flowing on the outside and support those rumblings on the inside. This event is open to anyone who's interested in uplifting prisoner voices. Intl Week of Solidarity with Anarchist Prisoners In other prison-related news, here's an announcement about the August 23- 30th 6th Annual Week of Solidarity with Anarchist Prisoners. From https://solidarity.intenational/ : We are coming back with global week of solidarity with anarchist prisoners. Since last year, a lot has changed in our countries, but the general tendency is going in the worse direction with more repressions applied against anarchists not only in Europe but worldwide. With this in mind, we are calling for sixth annual week of solidarity! Last year lots of people sent us their reports from different parts of the world and we hope that this year the tradition will grow even bigger. We need to support our comrades! Use this week to spread the information about anarchists behind bars. Don't have prisoners in your country? No worry, support prisoners from other countries in your region or use those days to raise awareness of repression mechanisms and how anarchist communities can fight against them! Build up security culture, support your local anarchist prisoners and fight back. Do not hesitate to continue sending your reports to tillallarefree@riseup.net! Nobody is free till all are free!   Intl Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners Also, of note, #J25Antifa is the 4th Annual Day of Soli with Antifascist prisoners. Many of the prisoners that are listed on the NYC Antifa post are within the borders of the Russian Federation and it's a good opportunity to show international solidarity in it's various forms for these good folks facing severe crackdowns.  NYC Anarchist Black Cross is having a letter writing dinner at the Base in Brooklyn on Tuesday, July 17th at 7pm if you're in New York.   Eric King's Partner Needs Help In other anarchist prisoner related topics, the partner of Eric King has just suffered some major tragedies in her life and could use some help. She was recently in a car accident from which she's recovering but now lacks a vehicle for her day to day work life, the childcare of Eric and her two kids, and her weekly visitations of him in prison. On top of that and her partner serving a sentence on which he has 5 more years, Eric's partner was also just diagnosed with thyroid cancer. If you have any extra dough you can toss to her, there's a go fund me page where she's soliciting donations. This can be found at gofundme.com. Sean Swain update To check in about last week's ask about Sean Swain's condition, we have yet to hear anything back from Sean, the prisoner who has for the last 4 years been doing a weekly segment on our radio show. Sean had been missing from the ODRC database of prisoners and not showing up as a transfer to another prison but the day after last week's episode of our show it was brought to our attention that Sean was now back in the Ohio database's website. Anyone with clues about Sean's condition and state of being, please drop us a line at thefinalstrawradio@riseup.net.   The Texas prison system is trying terrorist-jacket politicized prisoner Malik Washington!   Politicized prisoner Malik Washington was cleared for removal from Ad-Seg by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's state classification committee last month.  He has spent the past two years in solitary confinement on a bogus riot charge, which TDCJ has since admitted was not for actual rioting, but for organizing fellow prisoners to engage in work stoppages during the 2016 nationwide prison strike.   But as soon as Malik got to his new unit, he was informed that his clearance had been revoked, and that he was heading back to Ad-Seg.  He was given no explanation of why, but his support network did some digging, and found out that the classification committee is claiming to have "received additional information" from the Fusion Center in Texas, causing a determination that "it was in the best interest of the department that he not be released from Ad-Seg."   Fusion Centers bad news; they are based in the Department of Homeland Security and deal with anti-terrorism intelligence gathering, which, as we know, means manufacturing evidence to label people associated with the anti-authoritarian left, and others, as terrorists.     Fusion Centers are shadowy, unaccountable arms of the repressive state apparatus, and are quickly becoming one of state's new favorite tools.  What just happened to Malik is a signal that TDCJ is upping its repression of anarchist-identified prisoners, Muslims, and those engaged in black liberation struggle.     Please share this info with any media contacts you have; urge them to investigate Fusion Centers, and to ask questions about what kind of information they collect, how it is fact-checked, and how this data collection contributes to political repression--and urge them to dig into Malik's situation!    Write to Malik at:   Keith H. Washington #1487958 McConnell Unit 3001 South Emily Drive Beeville, TX 78102     Red Fawn Fallis sentenced to 57 months in jail from Unicorn Riot: In May, Michael “Little Feather” Giron was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for actions taken to defend pipeline resistance camps from police assault. Several other water protectors still face federal charges, with potential sentences of decades in prison, stemming from their participation in the resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline.Indigenous Water Protector Red Fawn Fallis, a political prisoner arrested during the movement to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline, was sentenced today in federal court by Judge Daniel Hovland. Fallis was sentenced to 57 months (4.75 years) in federal prison. She will receive a credit of 18 months ‘time served' taken off of her sentence, from time spent in North Dakota jails before trial proceedings began. Fallis is expected to serve a total of 39 months in prison followed by 3 years probation. In January 2018, Fallis entered a non-cooperating plea agreement in which prosecutors agreed to seek a sentence of less than seven years. In exchange, she pleaded guilty to charges of ‘Civil Disorder' and ‘Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition by a Convicted Felon.' Red Fawn and her supporters had previously maintained her innocence, and had stated that Fallis accepted the plea deal under the assumption that she would not receive a fair trial due to prosecutors withholding evidence. Judge Hovland had forbidden Fallis' defense team from mentioning treaty rights or other issues related to her arrest at anti-pipeline protests near the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's reservation border. The case against Red Fawn had centered around allegations she fired a gun during her arrest on October 27, 2016, when a massive police and military raid seized indigenous treaty lands on behalf of the Dakota Access Pipeline. The gun allegedly fired by Fallis was later revealed to have belonged to Heath Harmon, an undercover FBI informant who was romantically involved with Red Fawn at the time of her arrest. Before she was sentenced by Judge Hovland, Red Fawn Fallis told the court, “No matter where I go from here I am going to continue going forward…I wanted to move forward in a positive way away from Heath Harmon and the things he tried to put on me while I was trying to push him away.” – Red Fawn Fallis Sharing Is Caring If you like the podcast, share it with someone. A true man of Christ indeed. Over the past few years, Skip has been going to Zimbabwe of all places which has interested me greatly. I've been a long time follower of the happenings in Zimbabwe, with the celebration of ending the colonial, apartheid rule, to the devastation caused by Mugabe and now to a new hope as Mugabe has left the scene. It's important to understand that Zimbabwe/Rhodesia, was considered the "breadbasket" of ALL Africa in the middle part of this century. Wonderful people. Lots of resources. The British technical know how. Yet, Mugabe ruined all that with his tyrannical reign. Heartbreaking is not a strong enough word. But life goes on. And Zimbabwe may be on the threshold of something huge..with a bit of help from abroad, government reform and some good luck. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/josh-scandlen-podcast/support

GET READY FOR THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE! NO GUTS, NO GLORY on episode 18 of ERIC ROBERTS IS THE MAN as we tear into two carefully chosen Eric Roberts masterpieces. First is the only film featuring Eric and Julia Roberts acting together – as well as Elias Koteas, Michael Madsen and Dennis Hopper's horrific Irish accent! It's 1989's BLOOD RED and it *sucks*! Thankfully, that's balanced by the glory of Wayne Newton, underground fighting, and a gigantic German man named Brakus! It's BEST OF THE BEST II, and while it's missing Eric Roberts' glorious hair from the first, it adds a TON of goofy stuff to make up for it. ALSO: we announce our new co-host and have a live BLOOD OATH! You're not gonna want to miss it. As always, check out ERIC ROBERTS IS THE MAN on Twitter, or come chat ER (or anything else) on our Facebook group. Liam O'Donnell is a gentleman, scholar and host of the Cinepunx podcast over at Cinepunx.com. You can find Liam on his Twitter feed @LiamRulz, and his writing occasionally appears over at cinapse.co. The film PHOENIX can currently be viewed on Netflix. Liam was right. It's really good. THE ROBERTS REPORT Out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week is THE CONDEMNED II from WWE studies, featuring pro-wrestler Randy Orton along with ERIC ROBERTS playing his dad. This is a sequel to a film that starred Stone Cold Steve Austin, and I know nothing about it aside from the plot, which is: A former bounty hunter who finds himself on the run as part of a revamped Condemned tournament, in which convicts are forced to fight each other to the death as part of a game that's broadcast to the public. Orton and director Roel Reiné previously worked together in the film 12 ROUNDS 2, which I *also* haven't seen. I have, however, seen the FIRST 12 ROUND movie with John Cena and it really, really sucked. ———————————–   Over at ALLAFRICA.COM is an article entitled Ay Produces ‘Trip to Jamaica' for Jamaicans You may recall me mentioning the film A TRIP TO JAMAICA previously, and this article elaborates a bit on its creation. Popular Nigerian comedian, Ayo Makun, (AY), has said that his new movie “Trip to Jamaica” was inspired by his knowledge of how Jamaicans patronize Nigerian films. AY, who is the producer of the film, said the movie would hit the screen in months to come. In a chat with journalists, AY said he intended to take the film to the Jamaicans for the love they show the Nigerian movie industry. “They always want to watch our movies, so the best way to appreciate them back is to do something within their premise and create an aesthetic balance. This will make them like Nollywood even more,” AY said. He also said the movie would feature popular actor, Eric Roberts, who is well loved by the Jamaicans. I figure it's called A TRIP TO JAMAICA because that's why Eric Roberts is doing the film. ———–   And finally on this week's ROBERTS REPORT.. Recently added to the Eric Roberts ever-expanding IMDB page is a film called Q-4 DREAM CORPORATION, a science fiction movie from director Tim McKort   In “Q4 Dream Corporation” – a futuristic thriller about the government attempting to control people's sleeping habits – Madsen plays the role of antagonist Brandon Payton, who runs a corporation that is connected to manipulating people's dreams.   Break #1 –  “Blood Red” by Slayer Break #2 – “Main Title (Best of the Best II)” by David Michael Frank Break #3 – “Generator” by Bad Religion Don't forget to head over to iTunes to subscribe and rate the show. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Charles E. Cobb Jr. Professor Cobb is a journalist, professor, former member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the first black staff writer for National Geographic Magazine and the current senior analyst for AllAfrica.com. Professor Cobb has written several books addressing black people and the global system of White Supremacy. We'll discuss his most recent publication, This Nonviolent Stuff'll Get You Killed: How Guns Made The Civil Rights Movement Possible. Cobb offers vivid accounts of numerous black people who actively practiced counter-violence in response to unrelenting White Terrorism. Mr. Cobb suggests that the typical narrative of nonviolent, “passive” black protesters drastically misrepresents the large volume of black citizens who were unwilling to “turn the other cheek”. He details how armed self defense is as old as the System of Racism and that Whites have an equally long history of undermining and obstructing the 2nd amendment rights of black citizens. #AnswersForMiriamCarey #GlobalSystem INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

By 1960 drummer Max Roach had been for years a keen student of politics and civil rights and as a black American he realized that his mission was to combine politics and his music. He would do this without compromising the quality of his music in any way. Roach was one of the music's greatest drummers and a pioneer of Modern Jazz. The Freedom Now Suite was his first fully political statement and it features his ensemble and his vocalist Abbey Lincoln. Roach wrote the music and Oscar Brown Jr. wrote the words. The band includes Mr.Roach on drums with Booker Little on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Walter Benton on tenor saxophone and James Schenck on bass. The first three compositions deal with the USA and opens with "Driva' Man" and the guest soloist on this track is the great Coleman Hawkins. "Freedom Day" is by the band. Track three is Mr. Roach and Miss Lincoln only in a three part suite. Part 2 moves to Africa and Michael Olatunji is added on drums and vocal plus two other percussionists in "All Africa" and the final selection is in memory of the notorious Shapeville Massacre and called "Tears For Johannesburg". All of this was recorded in August and Seoptember 1960. It remains a pivotal recording in the long career of Mr. Max Roach and to this day is a powerful statement.
