Jason Hartman is joined by Wesley Gray, CEO of Alpha Architect for a fascinating discussion on inflation hedges and future scenarios for commodities and crypto. How should we allocate risk right now? Why is crypto performing so poorly? Are we truly becoming a Banana Republic that does not end well? Jason and Wesley discuss a few things that you should always consider including keeping your tax rates down as much as possible. Fees and taxes are things you can often control, whereas we can't control what the economy or inflation is going to do.  And why is crypto doing so poorly when it should, at least in theory, be the inflation hedge asset? Where's Michael Saylor? Isn't Bitcoin digital gold? Without a military behind it, will cryptocurrencies ever be truly viable? Welcome to The Creating Wealth Show where rents in suburbia are higher than rents in cities and the Fed wants to see you unemployed! Think we're kidding, right? Think again! You couldn't make up fiction this good if you tried! Jason Hartman takes you through the latest news stories and predictions affecting the economy and is joined by Wesley Gray, CEO of Alpha Architect for a fascinating discussion on inflation hedges and future scenarios for commodities and crypto. Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported over 200K new jobs were added in September. Sounds like great news for the economy and people in general, right? Strangely, it runs directly counter to what the Federal Reserve wants to see; they don't want to see the unemployment rate fall, they don't want to see you have a job. They want to see you unemployed. That low unemployment rate has to be driving the Fed nuts! Americans working and spending money is something they don't want to see, as they have forecasted a recession next year, and are looking for the unemployment rate to reach 4.4%. Today we are joined by Wesley Gray who is the CEO of Alpha Architect, a firm in the US that specializes in concentrated factor strategies. Having completed his MBA and PhD at the University of Chicago – the Harvard of the finance world – Wes is an authoritative voice when it comes to quantitative research and factor investing. Incredibly, he took a 4-year break during his PhD, joined the marines and went to Iraq, and has also written several books. He went from value investor and stock-picker to having a strong quant focus and realized that it was possible to eliminate the human biases while still capturing the factor premiums. Our talk with Wes illuminates the nuanced nature of factor investing, behaviour versus risk-based factor premiums and active management versus passive and indexing. He discusses the process of collecting data for his PhD, the rules according to which they structure portfolios, how their boutique firm differs from larger advisor companies and who their ideal client is. Wes also shares his views on selecting the best quant model, hedge funds, value premiums and market-cap indexing. It’s the 10-year anniversary of this extraordinary bull market, officially – except not really, as Porter explains to Buck in this week’s podcast episode. Even so – there’s no question a lot of people are making money. But with the S&P 500 having more than tripled since March 2009 lows… who’s been smartest (not LUCKIEST as would be the case with cryptos)? Porter points to believers of the FAANG stocks – and one of them in particular. Later on, they’re joined by Wesley Gray, a former Marine and professor of finance at Drexel who now runs a fund with $1 billion under management. He has a strategy of buying ultra-hated investments that would make even the most steeled valued investors uneasy. So how do you tell the difference between a stock that’s simply nearing a low… and one that’s doomed? Wesley will be joining the Stansberry team at our Vegas Conference October 1-2, along with Stansberry editors and hear guest speakers like Dr. Lacy Hunt, Steve Forbes, Robert Kiyosaki, Penn Jillette, Dennis Gartman, Jim Grant, and many others.

Talking to our guest for this episode, was an educative experience. He had a realisation, “I know I can’t be Warren Buffett because of little control on the biases.” And then asked himself, what can be done to remove these biases. Not by training oneself, but by building a mechanical system. That question led to series of Quantitative experiments with real money backing it up. The result of the experiments? A well defined quantitative model combining strategies from Value Investing and Momentum investing and building it into an investment product. Friends, I am very excited to present to you the guest for our latest podcast, Wesley R. Gray, PhD, a portfolio manager, CEO of Alpha Architect, a veteran of US Marine Corps and Co-Author of the awesome book: Quantitative Value. Wesley is not driven by any particular religion of investing. That is something we stand for. We will also discuss the insight of Dr. Malidoma Patrice Some regarding Ritual.  The Dagara process of preparing for ritual As Malidoma states that the teaching of indigenous cultures may help us go beyond modernity. "There was a time when all people were indigenous people on some part of the Earth. But in the last half of the millennium, the migration of people from region to region and from countryside to city broke many of the ties we used to have to one another and to the land and water that supported us. Those who didn't make the move, the indigenous people of the world, can help us remember what it's like to be connected to the environment and to each other in a community. This is valuable not because we would necessarily want to return to the way we used to live, but becuase facets of that connectedness can contribute greatly as we create a sustainalbe way of life."
