The Poet Laureate Has Gone to His Shed

If the poets of the past sat in their garrets dipping their quills in ink and waiting for inspiration to strike, our current Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has a more mundane and domestic arrangement. From his wooden shed in the garden, surrounded on all sides by the Pennine Hills and the Pennine weather, this summer he's working on a set of haikus inspired by the landscape around him and the people who drop by. Any distraction is welcome, even encouraged, to talk about poetry, creativity, music, art, sheds, sherry, music and the countryside. His guest this week Amanda Owen, the Yorkshire Shepherdess, came to public attention though the television series Our Yorkshire Farm. Ravenseat Farm in North Yorkshire is home to Amanda, her husband and her nine children. Having grown up very close to the location of Simon's shed, the conversation ranges from shared memories of growing up in Huddersfield and a love of the Marsden Hills to the business of running a sheep farm and the joy of the hay meadow at this time of year. As we set for a life of fulfillment and joy, we often find that as we are in search for something bigger and better.  In this process, we sometimes recognize that what we are searching for is with us all along.  You've heard the verse, "Where your treasure is, there you will find their heart."  In life, where we place value and importance says a lot about how we find happiness.  Today I'm chatting with Amanda Owen who shares her heart and the importance of "riding the wave" to your island of life and finding joy in the journey.  Amanda is the Executive Director of Puzzle Pieces in Owensboro, KY, a non-profit organization that she founded in 2012.  Puzzle Pieces serves individuals with intellectual disabilities by creating skills and an environment for them to flourish.  After leaving a career as a special education teacher, Amanda knew that she was meant to do more.  She had a passion for helping people and she wanted to create a place where individuals like her brother could thrive which didn't exist at the time.  She asked, "Why can't that be me?"  So, she created it.  Amanda and I read a book together last year, Pivot & Go.  There was one chapter in the book that hits home with this message.  If you look at your life as an island, a lot of times, we are paddling or sailing our boat towards the island and we are so focused on getting there, that we don't take time to enjoy the waves and the warm sunshine along the way.  Or, we don't take time to drop an anchor and enjoy being still and celebrating how far we've come.  Amanda reminds us that when you're riding the wave, bring others on your boat, because it's also about taking others with you along the journey and creating community.  You're going to need people to cheer you on and to help you keep your sights on what's ahead.  As you set sail on life, I hope you take time to ride the wave and enjoy the journey.  Embrace each moment and recognize that each wave no matter how big or small is a part of your story.  Maybe you need to ride out some waves and maybe some waves are meant to take you in a different direction.  And that's ok. Each pivot is a new opportunity for more.  It's important to not be so focused on your island that you forget to enjoy the journey along the way.  Enjoy riding the wave! Books mentioned in this episode are linked below. The Alchemist, Paulo CoelhoPivot & Go, by David Nurse To learn more about Amanda and her journey, head on over to Puzzle Pieces or find her on Instagram at Piecesofmebyamanda.  For more ways to bloom in between episodes, head on over to Liveyourlifeinbloom on Instagram!

Amanda Owen is a farmer, known to readers and television viewers worldwide as the ‘Yorkshire Shepherdess’. With her husband Clive and their nine children, she looks after Ravenseat, Swaledale – one of the most exposed farms in the Dales. Alongside running the farm, she has found time to write a number of books, having come to public attention on ITV's ‘The Dales’. On a “glishy sort of day”, sitting by a brook, David and Amanda chat without the distraction of phones and technology in this stunning signal ‘not spot’, interrupted only by a passing heron. Amanda, having grown up in the city, admits finding inspiration to become a hill shepherd from reading James Heriot's All Creatures Great and Small, and the couple wax lyrical about how a place like this, open and wild, builds one’s character. Business Playmakers podcast presents one of many special episodes where we go back to the beginning, when the sound quality wasn't as good, and remix. Proudly we would like to welcome Amanda Owen to the Business Playmakers podcast! Amanda Owen was multi year All State competitive softball player in high school, and that drive and passion led right into her professional career. Amanda went to college to pursue her passion in teaching special education and began her career in the school system, however Amanda always felt like there was more that she could do to give back to those with developmental disabilities. That experience led to the idea she had which later became the non-profit she founded and continues to lead today called Puzzle Pieces. Puzzle Pieces is an activity day center for individuals with special needs. Amanda’s passion and drive are very rare and infectious as well as inspiring. It was an honor for Business Playmakers to have Amanda on the show and we are certain that this show will not only be an inspiration to others as to what can be done to grow and drive business, but more importantly what can be done to give back to others and support a community.  www.puzzle-pieces.org Welcome to Business Playmakers, the podcast that meets with innovators, trailblazers, and leaders to learn about their experience and what success really means.
