I couldn't resist the subtitle, kids, sorry. It's not that shocking—but Tim's journey was definitely only for the bold.I've known Tim Grahl—or known of him—for more than a decade. I watched him help writers like Dan Pink launch their non-fiction books onto the best seller list, and devoured and followed his excellent advice about launching my own books (which you can find here at booklaunch.com). Then I watched—or rather, listened—as he pivoted into the world of fiction, enlisting editor Shaun Coyne to join him on a podcast and help him use Coyne's Storygrid method to work on what eventually, after many revisions and a whole lot of failing in public, became Tim's first novel, The Threshing. At the same time, he and Shaun were building Storygrid into what's not just a business, but a huge community of writers and editors. He's just published his second novel, The Shithead, a very different book from the first… I call it The Firm meets The Alchemist; Tim prefers Fleishman Is In Trouble meets Faust. Both work. We talk Tim's sideways journey into fiction, and then we talk craft—in particular, how to learn what you don't know, the myth of the lone writer in a cabin and the importance of feedback and then we dig into a passionate discussion of theme. You can check out The Shithead here. This is probably the only time you'll see this. Join me—KJ—for Novelmber, which is very hard to pronounce but is my word for reclaiming my writing space in November. Think NaNoWriMo, our version—daily challenges and stretch goals, formatted by you, for you. There will be write-alongs, posts, a massive Google spreadsheet for sharing goals and updating progress, thoughts on how hard this is, and more than you want to know about why I need this regroup so badly. All writers, every genre, welcome. This is sign-up only—I don't plan to spam the whole #AmWriting community with my wails of writerly distress daily for an entire month—but it's also for everyone who wants in. I hope you'll join me—I don't want to go this alone. Don't worry, signing up is simple! Here's how:Click here to go to your #AmWriting account, and when you see this screen, toggle “Novelmber” from “off” (grey) to “on” (green).THAT'S IT!Once you set that up, you'll get all future Novelmber emails. Any audio or video will show up in those, along with write-along schedules. You'll also want to add yourself to the Google Sheet where we'll all record our overall goal, day's goals, daily progress and what we're feeling. I've started it off. Join me for the first write-alongs HERE. (That's a link to my Zoom Room.) Are you a shallow breather? An anxious breather? How often are you consciously aware of your breath? Have you ever paused, on purpose, between breaths - just to feel how precious and urgent the process of breathing is to your being?  “Are you breathing just a little”, as Mary Oliver once wrote, “and calling it a life?” There's so much we can learn about ourselves when we take the time to tune into our own bodies and our own breath - which is actually Life itself, ceaselessly breathing through us. Hope you'll enjoy this contemplative episode today! And don't forget to check out my free guided meditation at marywelch.com too! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Dr. Nick and Dr. David interview Dr. MeiLan Han about our lung health and the impact that our respiratory health plays in our overall vitality. We discuss: - Three common misconception about our lungs - Simple and inexpensive testing to measure your lung health - Advancements that have been made since the pandemic - 3 most common lung diseases and how we can avoid them - COPD and lower respiratory diseases being the third and fourth leading cause of death globally - and more.... Dr. MeiLan K. Han, professor of medicine and chief of pulmonary and critical care at the University of Michigan and spokesperson for the American Lung Association and author of her new book, Breathing Lessons:  A Doctor's Guide to Lung Health, knows that speaking about our lungs might not be the sexiest of topics, but with the frightening impact of COVID-19 on our respiratory system and the even more frightening unknown long-term impact it may have, now is the time to have a frank discussion on our lung health. In Breathing Lessons, Dr. MeiLan K. Han takes readers on a fascinating tour of this most vital organ. Han explains the wonder of breathing and reveals how the lungs serve as the body's first line of defense. She provides a timely overview of the latest scientific thinking about the leading respiratory risks―including indoor and outdoor pollution, smoking and vaping, wildfire smoke, and viruses like SARS-CoV-2―and offers a practical guide to keeping lungs healthy. And with authority as both practitioner and medical researcher, she argues powerfully for a social policy that makes a priority of preserving lung health nationwide. MeiLan K. Han, MD, is professor of medicine and chief of pulmonary and critical care at the University of Michigan and a spokesperson for the American Lung Association. She received her medical degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and completed her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. Anne Tyler is a novelist and short story writer. Her 23 novels include the Accidental Tourist, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Breathing Lessons. Anne was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1941, the oldest of four children. Her parents were Quakers and the family lived in a succession of Quaker communities in the South until they settled in a Quaker commune in Celo, in the mountains of North Carolina in 1948. When she was 11 the family moved to Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, where Anne attended a mainstream school. Anne majored in Russian literature at Duke University in North Carolina where she enrolled in a creative writing class run by the author Reynolds Price. (5/5) “Theology matters. Proper doctrine is crucial. The Scriptures first and foremost is profitable for doctrine before it can even be practiced or lived out. Proper theology, in truth and in grace, as rooted in the the proper handling of Scriptures, shapes the entirety of a man's life, making him “complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Thus, Jesus was indeed clear when He declared that the Word of God is Truth. And this Truth sanctifies His people (John 17:17). Theology shapes the whole man; Truth is for Life. Your life and influence will very much depend on the very truth you stand on and enjoy. Go back to the Bible and then do not go anywhere else.” The church is having some difficulty breathing. She is choked by the world thinking that the world is her Lord and Savior: something that Satan has far too long lured her from the very beginning. Satan tried to lure Jesus into kneeling and bowing down to him and promised him the whole world, and Jesus rebuked the devil. How? He held on to the Word. Our Lord knew where the battle lines are drawn. The moment the church bows down to the world, that's where our downfall begins. Take time to listen and challenge yourselves to really dig deep into the Word of God and so obey it out of your love for the God of the Word. This is Breathing Lessons - Part 5. Stay tuned in! (4/5) Chapters 3 & 4 of Paul's second epistle to Timothy are the last known chapters that the apostle Paul wrote before he died. In it, we see Paul's crucial words, given to his disciple Timothy and also echoing towards us who are leaders, pastors, ministers, or simply members in the church. Take note, Paul writes here, that the last days will be marked by a great deluge of worldliness: the people will do everything out of their love for the world and will do almost anything to disregard the Word. Satan tried to lure Jesus into kneeling and bowing down to him and promised him the whole world, and Jesus rebuked the devil. How? He held on to the Word. Our Lord knew where the battle lines are drawn. The moment the church bows down to the world, that's where our downfall begins. (3/5) About to be poured out as a drink offering, Paul shares his final moments writing for his disciple Timothy to come to him. Here, he writes his sharp words, a charge not only to Timothy but to all the ministers and leaders in the church to seriously - preach the Word. While the world is going from bad to worse, Timothy is charged to live a godly life through being serious in living for and equipping the church with His God-breathed Word - not for the entertainment of the goats' itching ears but to feed Christ's sheep. Even when everybody would love to be tickled for entertainment, the pastor should know that his primary job is a life-and-death call to rightly divide the Word of Truth as the sanctifying agent of the church and nothing else. Take time to listen and challenge yourselves to really dig deep into the Word of God and so obey it out of your love for the God of the Word. This is Breathing Lessons - Part 3. Stay tuned in! (1/5) We are living in perilous times. In fact, the apostle Paul, on his last letter (his last written words), gave an imagery of what the world will look like “in the last days” (2 Tim.3): it will be times of difficulty (v.1), believers will be persecuted as they choose to live in godliness (v.12) and everyone will go on from bad to worse. What was Paul's final charge to his beloved disciple and son in the faith? This same charge to Timothy by Paul is the very same charge of God towards His church. Take time to listen and challenge yourselves to really dig deep into the Word of God and so obey it out of your love for the God of the Word. This is Breathing Lessons - Part 1. (2/5) Paul understood very well that in ministry, people will desert you and leave you behind because you will have contrasting loves. Today, meet Demas. See how both he and Paul parted ways in one of the most painful of all departures: one left for the world, one for the Word. This is why Paul longed for Timothy's companionship and also because he wanted to charge Timothy with something very important, something to warn this young pastor to not go where Demas went, to preach the Word more than anything else - in fashion or out of fashion. Take time to listen and challenge yourselves to really dig deep into the Word of God and so obey it out of your love for the God of the Word. This is Breathing Lessons - Part 2. Stay tuned in! On earth we breathe in oxygen, which feeds life and breathe out carbon dioxide which doesn't. A lot of Mindfulness instruction has to do with guided breathing “now breathe in deeply for 4 seconds, hold it, out for 4 seconds.” It helps to be guided until you get the hang of it. Our spirits need to breathe as well. The oxygen of the spirit is the breath of God Himself and it's closer than you think!
