This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit smokeempodcast.substack.comTo talk or not to talk about this week's red meat media story? Well, we're talking. Are we surprised at the appetite that some in media take in shredding one of their own in public? Of course not; it's the same old boring mob behavior. But what's really behind it? Professional jealousy? The moronic idea that if you knock a person off her perch, that gets you closer to her gig? And does anyone believe, as a kajillion tweets enjoin us to believe, that women and journalism have been set back decades? Also discussed:* Melania Trump as new and improved political spouse* Who among us has not posed for tasteful nudes?* No one should doubt the pulverizing power of the Kennedy machine* The irresponsibility of running “too good to verify” stories* The necessary intimacy between reporter and subject. “It's a dance of sorts.”* Status, the new fragrance for men…* Things worked out well for the creator of the Shitty Media Men List: yea or nay? Also discussed: the literary imposter Laura Albert (aka, J.T. Leroy), an unrecognizable Colin Farrell, Nancy's got a new book (if no pre-publicity nudes, dammit!) and much more!

And today comedian Fortune Feimster joins us to discuss Laura Albert, an author who published a book under the pseudonym JT LeRoy, only years later it was discovered that JT never really existed. Plus, a 63-year-old Mississippi man is accused of being involved in a footbath scheme resulting in over $10 million in fake claims. Stay Schemin'! Let's take a trip down memory lane! That's exactly what this interview was all about for both of us. It's not exactly what I thought it would be, it was much better. Speaking to an actress who has seen and been through it all, especially from the “Golden Era” of Hollywood, is a huge honor for me. I have always enjoyed movies from the 1980s. However, any movie from the 1980s with a touch of Lovecraft is golden, the practical effects cannot be matched by what we see today. Laura, being the aspiring actress she is, explains how she went from actress to stunt performer and why. I mean, it's a solid and genuine choice and she has no regrets. Being a stunt performer in some of Hollywood's most notable horror movies will land you the recognition you deserve. And Laura deserves all of the recognition because we all know that being a stunt performer is NOT easy. She talks about her favorite scenes, what it was like behind the scenes, and everyday life on set. I am still in awe, getting to know the first-hand experience from Laura. Giving such detail of her perspective is truly the ‘knowledge' we all need to soak in. Such a fantastic and talented individual and I cannot wait to go back and watch all of the horror movies where she was a stunt performer in, to get a closer look at her talent. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

Summer is here and the time is right … for getting the heck out of dodge! With temperatures soaring and kids off for summer break, scores of people are planning to travel at some point this summer. In fact, 85% of Americans are planning to take a trip this summer and of those more than 50% plan to travel to their destination by plane. But in their efforts to get away from it all, many might be experiencing more of a stressful scenario than they had anticipated, as airports across the country are experiencing at worst, canceled flights and at best significant delays. What's surprising is that these disruptions are even extending to folks who are registered for TSA PreCheck. Joining me today to take a look behind the scenes at what is causing these delays and cancelations, what can be done to address them, and what would-be vacationers can do to limit the impact and stress on their vacations, is Laura Albert, professor and department chair of industrial & systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the 2023 INFORMS president.
With 2023 well underway, it's time to circle back and check in with the INFORMS president Laura Albert, professor and department chair of industrial & systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for an update on the latest and greatest at INFORMS.

Today on Salt Lake Dirt I welcome Sean Thor Conroe. His novel Fuccboi was released this past January on Little Brown. Laura Albert first recommended Fuccboi to me. She always sends me books that I fall in love with. Fuccboi was an interesting read for me. It took me longer than normal to finish. I took my time with it. After I finished it, the book wouldn't seem to leave my consciousness and I thought about it frequently. I was excited to have some space between finishing Fuccboi and actually talking to Sean. I think it made for a better conversation. I can't wait to read more from Sean in the future. Great conversation, great book, great guy! Make sure to check out his podcast 1STORYPOD. Thanks for listening! Kyler @saltlakedirt KPCR.org
Several of you might find today's guest and topic a bit mysterious, since the story of Laura Albert and J.T LeRoy seems almost lost in history. Show business is filled with aspirational characters who attempt to achieve fame and fortune by "faking it until they make it." But where does this wishful thinking end and a full on hoax begin? Today we're going to be speaking with Marjorie Sturm, long time community advocate in the San Francisco Bay Area and documentary filmmaker about her film about the fascinating tale of J.T. LeRoy and the literary hoax that fooled not just that community, but all of showbusiness for almost 10 years. It's the morning after the Super Flower Blood Moon, Sarah needs to pack for the Depp-Heard trial in Virginia, and Nancy's in a hotel bed in Austin, but first! More on Grey's Anatomy writer/fabulist Elisabeth Finch (in scrubs, above), who faked cancer (and a kidney transplant, and the suicide of her brother, and and and …) because “she loved the attention so much.” Sarah wonders why we're so fascinated by female con artists, especially ones who go down in flames, and if we're the suckers who are being taken in — or the ones being exposed. We bounce over to the Depp-Heard trial, where Sarah wonders — not for the first time — what if Amber is telling the truth? We've found two women who think so.The Joan Didion line Sarah couldn't recall: “Writers are always selling someone out.” (Not all writers!) (Well.) Sarah goes deep on the Duke lacrosse rape scandal — the complicated true story, the troubled woman who filed the claims, the abdication of due process, and the false narrative promoted by key figures including Duke faculty members calling themselves the “Group of 88.” The goal was to exact justice “regardless of the truth.” A bunch of preppy white athletes needed a historical comeuppance, though it didn't work out like that. “People who lie endorse lies,” Nancy suggests, before giving a big huzzah to a recent New Yorker piece asking why we valorize trauma and what happens when we do. In her own reporting, Nancy has seen how lies like that result in dead kids.Nancy engages in some mouth-frothing over the Fabulist of the Week, a writer on Grey's Anatomy who faked cancer for years, while Sarah shares a story about her run-in with New York Times fabulist Jayson Blair, and we bond over childhood fibbing: Nancy said she was related to the Osmonds, and Sarah told people she had a phone date with River Phoenix.

In the late 90's, JT LeRoy – a male teen sex worker turned-novelist – became an overnight literary sensation. Publishing three bestselling books, LeRoy's electrifying work revealed a subversive American culture that had never before been explored. Immediately, LeRoy was celebrated by Hollywood and the Literati. The only problem was... JT didn't actually exist. In 2005, a 39 year old woman by the name of Laura Albert was outed as being the real author. Albert had employed her then sister-in-law Savannah Knoop to don a wig, fedora and dark sunglasses and portray the elusive author who was rising to fame. Ever since New York Magazine declared it “the greatest literary hoax of the millennium”, Albert has been misunderstood by many. As she completes her soon to be released memoir, we sat down with the author to discuss how trauma and survival informed her early work, and also how our evolving cultural understanding of gender identity has shifted the interpretation of JT LeRoy's legacy. A note to our listeners: This episode contains mature language and sensitive subject matter including child sexual abuse, negative body image, and eating disorders. Discretion advised.
What's poppin' con-gregation? This week, Fortune Feimster joins us to discuss Laura Albert, an author who published a book under the pseudonym JT LeRoy. It wasn't discovered until years later that JT never really existed. Plus a 63-year-old Mississippi man is accused of being involved in a footbath scheme resulting in over $10 million in fake claims. Widely considered the greatest literary hoax of modern times, the story of JT Leroy seems almost impossible to believe. Bursting onto the scene in 2001 with a bestselling book and heartbreaking life story, JT Leroy was a 20-year-old writing prodigy who quickly became the celebrity of the hour. He was photographed at A-List parties. Profiled in magazines. Gus Van Sant wanted to make a movie about him. Winona Ryder cried while giving a speech about him. The Smashing Pumpkins welcomed him backstage at their concerts. Madonna wanted him to join Kabbalah. But JT Leroy didn't exist. So who was this person? And how did they dupe not just Hollywood, but the entire world? (TW: although JT Leroy turned out to be a fiction, this episode includes brief references to the physical and child sexual abuse described in his books.) Skip to the story! Today on 1050 Bascom, we are excited to welcome back Laura Albert, professor of industrial and systems engineering at UW-Madison. Prof. Albert first joined us last summer to talk about Covid-19 testing and tracing and the return of major league baseball. Ten months later, COVID remains a global and national crisis -- though we now have effective vaccines and, in the US, case numbers are declining in seemingly hopeful ways again. We wanted to check-in with Prof. Albert for her insights on what we've learned about the virus, what the early models got right and wrong, and the impact of vaccines in the US and around the world. Prof. Albert also offered her take on what a return to something akin “normal” might look like and when we might see it happen. We enjoyed our conversation with Prof. Albert and hope you will too.
In one of our most revealing episodes yet, coveted author & sexpert Laura Albert joins the show to discuss her journey through America's underbelly. From growing up as a child of the system to being one of the original phone sex operators, Laura Albert shares the importance of storytelling and exposing people to the truth.
Justin and Tyler retrace their “creative bender”, which started with going #1 on the Billboard Charts and ended with directing a controversial Chet Hanks music video. Then author Laura Albert, aka JT LeRoy, stops by to talk about her upcoming book and the lasting legacy of her incredibly prolific life.
Nancy Rommelmann’s work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the LA Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, Reason, and other publications. She has an eye and ear for capturing those interstitial, unseen lives that are lived all around us, particularly unseen in a place like Hollywood. Her articles are full of them: LAPD officers and the refuge that is the cop bar; the inhabitants of a Skid Row dive; the disciples of a Vietnamese spiritual leader; the workaday lives of a Mexican gardening crew in the Hollywood Hills, and a cross-country trip with one of John Wayne Gacy’s pen pals to interview the serial killer two weeks before his execution. Rommelmann received Best Arts Feature 2009 for “No Exit Plan,” from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies (AAN), as well as Best Entertainment Arts Feature 2009 from the Los Angeles Press Club. “Jena at 15,” another LA Weekly feature, received the identical awards in 2001. Recently, Rommelmann has taken to chronicling people whose outsize dreams and delusions inspire them to audacious and sometimes terrible acts: a mother with Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy who murdered her fourteen-year-old daughter before herself committing suicide (Sacrificing Rebecca); the writer Laura Albert, who perpetrated a ten-year con by writing as a teenage boy, the demimonde darling JT LeRoy (No Exit Plan), and Amanda Stott-Smith, who in May 2009 forced her two young children off a bridge in Portland, Oregon. Rommelmann’s Op-Ed pieces and book reviews appear in the Oregonian, and she is also a contributor to the media website LA Observed. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/otcpod1/support
Twenty years ago San Francisco author Laura Albert began to write novels using the literary persona JT Leroy. JT was a West Virginian transvestite prostitute, who applied his trade in and around Appalachian truck stops. At thirteen he was a junkie and a cutter. By nineteen, he had moved to San Francisco and started to write. JT's identity came from Laura's own need to create a persona through which she would able to confront and write about the sexual and physical abuse, she herself had experienced as a girl. In 2000, Laura as JT LeRoy published the novel, Sarah. The book was a sensation. The New York Times Book Review called the book "deft and imaginative". Success meant that there was a massive audience that wanted to meet JT. Laura met this demand as it she puts it "for Harry Potter to come alive" by recruiting her then sister-in-law to play the part of JT. Laura adopted a Cockney accent and played the role of JT's agent and assistant. Laura's ruse transformed JT Leroy from noted novelist to an A list celebrity. Hollywood came calling. Actress Asia Argento bought the rights to the LeRoy novel The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things and made the book into a film. In 2006, the inevitable happened, JT Leroy was accused of being a hoax. The New York Times published the article Unmasking of JT LeRoy: In Public, He's a She. The article fueled by misguided anger framed Laura's work as a con and avoided any meditation on the reasons why Laura did what she did. Unsurprisingly, the rest of the media followed suit and piled onto the JT Leroy as greatest literary hoax theme and in doing so, missed the opportunity to dig deeper into the role of identity in art and the sheer inventiveness of what Laura had done. Overtime the media frenzy disappeared, but the global audience for the JT Leroy books did not. Fans of the books continue to be moved and respond to the stories because of what Laura calls "the felt authenticity" in the work. Laura is still writing. Check out the new Sarah & The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things audiobooks narrated by a series of narrators including Shirley Manson and past Lydian Spin guest Michael Imperioli. Two excerpts from the audio book are included in the episode.
Taylor tells Josie about the literary 'it' boy who never really existed. Plus: a journalist falls in love with her infamous subject.

In this episode of 1050 Bascom, we were grateful to talk to Laura Albert, professor of industrial and systems engineering at UW-Madison, about Covid-19 testing and tracing and the return of major league baseball. Professor Albert’s research focuses on modeling and solving real-world discrete optimization problems with application to homeland security, disasters, emergency response, public services, and healthcare. She is also interested in sports analytics and with the start of major league baseball this week, we thought now would be a perfect time to talk about modeling Covid-19 cases and outcomes, testing and tracing and how this might work (or not!) in major league baseball and professional and NCAA sports more generally. We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Prof. Albert, and hope you will too.

In 2000, the novel “Sarah” was published. It was written by a homeless teenaged hustler named JT LeRoy. Nobody had ever met him—his only correspondence with press and publishers was over the phone or fax machine—and still he became the literary sensation of the time. He was dubbed a ‘wunderkind,’ an ‘it boy’ and ‘the literary voice of his generation.’ He became a best-selling author and sold the film rights to his books. The only thing was, he didn’t actually exist. On January 9, 2006 The New York Times sent shockwaves through the literary world when it unmasked JT LeRoy, whose tough prose about a sordid childhood had captivated icons and luminaries internationally. It turned out that he was the creative expression of 40-year-old San Francisco former phone-sex operator turned housewife, Laura Albert. Author: The JT LeRoy Story takes us down the infinitely fascinating rabbit hole of how Laura Albert--like a Cyrano de Bergerac on steroids--breathed not only words, but life, into her avatar for a decade. Albert's epic and entertaining account plunges us into a glittery world of rock shows, fashion events, and the Cannes red carpet where LeRoy becomes a mysterious sensation. Also, our best friend Courtney Love (call us, girl!) Is back in a big, cocaine-infused way. Oh, how we’ve missed her. You Guys! This week we resume our Spring of Scandal by diving into the strange story of "J.T. LeRoy," the early-aughts It Boy of the literary scene, who attracted celebrity fans including Bono, Madonna, and Winona Ryder before being unmasked, in 2006, as a fraud, the creation of a thirty-something Brooklyn woman named Laura Albert, who'd enlisted her sister-in-law to "play" LeRoy in public. We recount the ins and outs of the story, and discuss whether we should view the whole episode as a scam, performance art, or something in between. We also talk about the work itself, and how it holds up, independent of the false premise at the heart of its creation--or whether it's even possible, or desirable, to separate the art from the author, when the two were presented as so inextricably linked. If all that sounds like pretty heady stuff, don't worry, we also talk about raccoons. If you like the show, please consider subscribing to our Patreon, which helps offset our costs and allows us to keep doing the podcast each week. In exchange for $5, you'll also get access to a monthly bonus episode, Book Fight After Dark, in which we explore some of the weirder reaches of the literary universe: Amish mysteries, caveman romances, end-times thrillers and more!

On January 9, 2006 the New York Times sent shockwaves through the literary world when it unmasked "it boy" wunderkind JT LeRoy, whose tough prose about his sordid childhood had captivated icons and luminaries internationally. It turned out LeRoy didn't actually exist. He was dreamed up by 40-year-old San Francisco punk rocker and phone sex operator, Laura Albert. Director Jeff Feuerzeig’s AUTHOR: THE JT LEROY STORY takes us down the infinitely fascinating rabbit hole of how Laura Albert - like a Cyrano de Bergerac on steroids - breathed not only words, but life, into her avatar for a decade. Albert's epic and entertaining account plunges us into a glittery world of rock shows, fashion events, and the Cannes red carpet where LeRoy becomes a mysterious sensation. As she recounts this astonishing odyssey, Albert also reveals the intricate web spun by irrepressible creative forces within her. Her extended and layered JT LeRoy performance still infuriates many; but for Albert, channeling her brilliant fiction through another identity was the only possible path to self-expression. Director Jeff Feuerzeig join us for a lively conversation on how Laura’s life, her traumas and innate brilliance made JT Leroy such a hugely fascinating saga, on and off the screen. Written & Directed by Chris Kelly and starring Jesse Plemons & Molly Shannon, it is now in theatres & on VOD, from Vertical Entertainment. Another film this week is the fascinating documentary "Author: The JT Leroy Story," and we have an interview with director Jeff Feuerzeig about getting to interview the real JT Leroy, Laura Albert, and dealing with the legal challenges surrounding a major literary hoax. Our other films this week are the Polish horror film "Demon" by Marcin Wrona; religious comedy "The Apostate" by Frederico Veiroj; inspiring documentary "Landfill Harmonic" about the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, by Brad Allgood & Graham Townsley; and Tunisian drama "As I Open My Eyes," set on the eve of the Arab Spring, by Leyla Bouzid. Hosts Laurie Winer and Tom Lutz talk with Laura Albert on the eve of the cinematic debut of the documentary film about her, "Author: The JT Leroy Story." The conversation covers the story of the Albert's bestselling books, which she wrote under the pseudonym - or rather, through her avatar - "JT Leroy." It's one of the most fascinating, and controversial, tales in recent American letters.
Inspired by Laura Albert and JT LeRoy.

On EP 24 Paco and George talk with filmmaker Marjorie Sturm about her documentary The Cult of JT LeRoy. We talk about JT Leroy's first two novels Sarah and The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things and we get into hero worship, cons, Rachel Dolezal, improvisation, filmmaking and much more. Authorized and unauthorized, The Cult of JT Leroy received two Jury Awards for Best Feature Documentary (SF IndieFest and Oslo/Fusion International) in 2015 and played at top-tier festivals around the world. Ethically charged, controversial, and confusing, JT’s life and death sprang open a Pandora’s box of powerful questions about literature and culture, identity and celebrity, and the reality of the society we live in. Fraud? Art? Sociopathy? Complicity? The Cult of JT Leroy is a testament to this bizarre and elaborate story that has captured the attention of the world’s media and perplexes to this day.Jeremiah "Terminator" LeRoy was a literary persona created in 1994 by American writer Laura Albert. LeRoy was supposedly born October 31, 1980 in West Virginia. His backstory was one of prostitution, drug addiction, and vagrancy in California. After his first novel Sarah was published, "LeRoy" started making public appearances. A January 2006 article in The New York Times declared that the person acting as LeRoy in public was Albert's sister-in-law, Savannah Knoop. Knoop wrote her own memoir of the experience called Girl Boy Girl. An Albert-endorsed documentary by Jeff Feuerzeig, Author: The JT LeRoy Story, premiered at Sundance 2016.Marjorie Sturm is an award-winning filmmaker whose films span a broad perspective: narrative, documentary, and experimental. We're discussing Stephen Sayadian's 1989 film, Dr. Caligari. Co-written by Jerry Stahl, the film tells the tale of a patient at an asylum run by the granddaughter of the infamous German doctor.
