Chip Kidd is an American graphic designer best known for his book covers. Based in New York City, Kidd is arguably the most famous dust jacket designers in the world. He has been credited by many as having spawned "a revolution in the art of America book packaging,” despite having no recognizable style. In fact, he says that “A signature look is crippling… [because] the simplest and most effective solutions aren't dictated by style.” It has been said by many that the history of book design can be split into two eras: before Kidd and after.  He went to work at Knopf in 1986. Today he is associate art director and freelances widely, designing in total, some 75 dust jackets a year.  We met in his offices at Knopf in New York to discuss his book Chip Kidd: Book 2. In so doing we talk about Meryl Streep, Haruki Murakami Martin Amis, the Eisner Awards, French kissing Neil Gaiman and connecting with authors, Alfred and Blanche Knopf, Sonny Mehta, D.A. Dwiggins, Paul Bacon, Geek Love, die cuts, Glamorama, the Yale Review, Chip's late husband poet and Yale Review editor J. D. McClatchy, Chris Ware, the Factory record label, Peter Seville, New Order album covers, the importance of dust jackets and identities, ebooks, death, being paid for your ideas and much more.  * This interview was recorded in October, 2019. Sonny Mehta died in December, 2019.

Follow Books & Whatnot on Twitter at @booksandwhatnot. Introduction In which we apologize profusely for the delay in our episode posting, bond over Kelly Link, and get excited about books that are... already out We had the pleasure of chatting with Javier nearly every week for a month while trying to record this episode (#techfail), then ran into a few other delays (#lifefail), but WE HAVE PREVAILED. That said, we talk about books that are already out as if they're forthcoming and we're drinking a nice "summer" drink because it was, you know, still summer when we first started this wild ride of an episode. Just pretend you're a time traveler visiting the halcyon days of late August 2017.    We’re Drinking Vodka & Tonics with NO FRUIT Javier's Reading a bunch of nonfiction for the Kirkus Nonfiction Prize The Sun in Your Eyes by Deborah Shapiro Heartbreaker by Maryse Meijer The Seventh Function of Language by Laurent Binet Ranger Games by Ben Blum Kim's Reading Mother of All Questions by Rebecca Solnit (and check out the Huffington Post article about being mansplained to while reading about Solnit's Men Explain Things to Me) You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me by Sherman Alexie The Store by James Patterson... 'cause Patterson is awesome, gives booksellers (including your grateful hosts) money for fancy things like student loan debt and ridiculous urban rent, trolls Amazon for funsies, and rocks a photoshopped Santa hat like a boss: Kim's reading aloud: My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George Emma's Reading MIS(H)Adra by Iasmin Omar Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado... Emma's favorite story from the collection is “Inventory” Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! by Mariko Tamaki Spinster by Kate Bolick   Forthcoming Titles We're Excited For Kim's Epic List of Titles that Are Already Out The Golden House by Salman Rushdie Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward Miss Kopp’s Midnight Confessions by Amy Stewart What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng Afterglow by Eileen Myles Never Stop by Simba Sana The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison Javier's Excited About The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne Release by Patrick Ness (if you haven't read Ness before, Javier recommends you start with The Chaos Walking series, which beginning with The Knife of Never Letting Go) Dinner at the Center of the Earth by Nathan Englander (also mentioned The Ministry of Special Cases and What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank) The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch (pubs 2/6/18) The Grip of It by Jac Jemc Emma's Excited About The Glass Town Game by Catherynne M Valente In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan We Were Witches by Ariel Gore (How to Become a Famous Writer Before You’re Dead) A Loving, Faithful Animal by Josephine Rowe Chapter I [26:50] In which Javier conquers the Chicago bookselling scene Javier started at Tower Records (RIP) He currently manages the Fiercely Independent Chicago-area bookstore, The Book Table. Javier has worked at pretty much every bookstore in Chicago. Other than the OG Powell's. Unless you're talking time travel. Javier's epic Tour de Bookselling (chronologically): Tower Books --> Crown Books --> Barbara's Bookstore --> The Book Cellar --> Seminary Co-op Bookstores --> 57th Street Books --> Newberry Library Bookstore --> Book Stall --> City Lit Books --> The Book Table  Chapter II [33:45] In which we talk Publishing Cocktails and how to network IRL in the internet age Publishing Cocktails, created by Javier and Keir Graff (senior editor at BookList) brings Chicago-area book industry folk from around the country together. They have two primary meetup events: Book Swap & Cash Mob. Follow Publishing Cocktails on Twitter at @PubNight. Sign up for the Publishing Cocktails email list for future updates.   Chapter III [38:20] In which Emma is, once again, deeply disappointed Book Description Guaranteed to Get You Reading Anything not blurbed by Lena Dunham (shout out to Gary Shteyngart’s epicly excessive blurbing). Anything blurbed by Kelly Link or George Saunders. Check the blurbs on Patrick Rothfuss’s Name of the Wind. Plus time travel! Kim and Javier bond over All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders (shout out to the Booze and Lasers Book Club at Third Place Books Seward Park), with references to Michael Crichton’s Timeline and, you know, Harry Potter. Emma ruins the ending of one of the stories in A Guide to Being Born by Ramona Ausubel. Desert Island Pick The entire body of work of Agatha Christie Station Eleven Pick Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, which has Javier’s favorite first line: It was a pleasure to burn. In case you were wondering, Emma’s favorite first (and second) line(s) come from Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. Javier’s posting staff’s favorite lines from literature in his store and he drunkenly promised Emma that he’d post hers too. Pics or it didn’t happen, Javier. Wild Pick The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben Bookseller Confession HAS ANY BOOKSELLER ACTUALLY READ HARRY POTTER? JESUS, YOU GUYS. Go-To Handsell Geek Love by Katherine Dunn Here's Javier's blurb, blatantly stolen from The Book Table's website: When confronted with the "What is your favorite book of all time?" query, most people will often pause, looking over the inquisitors head while thoughtfully scratching his or her chin. I, on the other hand, will not hesitate when I tell you this. Geek Love is my favorite book. Of all time. Period. This oddball masterpiece (a National Book Award Finalist in 1989) shaped me as a reader and more importantly as a bookseller 20+ years ago. It's one of those reading experiences that make you feel like you're in on some life-changing secret. A novel that will chill you, move you and make you laugh, often at the same time. Help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of Geek Love, quite possibly the best novel you've never read. Master & the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov: There's a cat that drinks vodka and talks! Bonus Bookseller Confession from both Emma and Kim: They’ve never read either of Javier’s go-to handsells. #booksellerfail Impossible Handsell The End of Alice by A M Homes (author of This Book Will Save Your Life and Music for Torching) Also mentioned, the origin impossible handsell: Tampa by Alissa Nutting Book for Booksellers The Grip of It by Jac Jemc Still Life with Tornado by AS King (author of Ask the Passengers) Another stolen blurb from The Book Table's website: In Still Life with Tornado A.S. King captures the human condition we refer to as "being a teenager" with so little effort I found myself utterly floored. Exploring the way that memory affects grief and vice versa was second in genius only to how King manifests said memory/grief in the mind of 16 year old Sarah. King weaves family history, art and what our past, present and the future can tell us about ourselves into a perfect storm of a book. This is the Celtfather Marc Gunn. Today, I'm gonna share some survival tips for anyone who wants to bring their kids to Gen Con. Gen Con is the longest running gaming convention in the world. It's located in Indianapolis, IN And they are celebrating their 50 year anniversary this year. Course I've only been performing there since 2007. But I remember dreaming about going back in the 80s when I was reading Dragon Magazine and playing D&D all the time.  If you like this podcast, make sure you share and subscribe at http://celtfather.com/  Now I have two daughters of my own. And I keep waiting and waiting until I feel like my oldest daughter Kenzie will be join me. So last year, I pulled aside Nykki and Matt Boersma who bring their three kids to the convention every year. I asked them for advice. And to help other parents, I recorded it. Oh! I don't think we mention it in the interview, but Gen Con also publishes a Family Fun Guide. So make sure pick up one of those at the convention. But before we get to my interview, I want to share a little bit of news about what I will be up to at Gen Con this year. Oh! I don't think we mention it in the interview, but Gen Con also publishes a Family Fun Guide. So make sure pick up one of those at the convention. Not only do I busk at the convention every day. But I also do shows. This will be my busiest year at the convention yet. I kinda went overboard with the shows I setup. Here's where you can see me perform this year: Thursday, August 17, 2017 Comedy Cabaret Westin - Grand V @ 8 PM Enjoy a comedy & music concert featuring many of Gen Con's best entertainers. I have a new CD that will be coming to the convention. It's called Name On My Soul and is by my band Kilted Kings. My new Firefly CD is not yet done. The album is called As Long As I'm Flyin'. However, I will have postcards with info on how you can join the Gunn Runners Club to get a digital copy of the album as one of the Patreon gifts. And on August 14th, you can buy my new single. It's called "Wherever I May Roam". It's the acoustic solo version. Watch the video on YouTube. Follow the link in the shownotes. If you're not familiar with my Gunn Runners Club. It is my home on Patreon. 121 people generously pledge $1 per month or more to support my music. Finally, if you want to learn a little bit about my D&D characters. Not only do I have a song called "Those Are Characters Who Died" on my album Sci Fi Drinking Songs. But I also did an interview earlier this year on podcast called Tell Me About Your Character. You'll find a link in the shownotes. Alright, on to my interview with Nykki and Matt Boersma. Here's what we talk about: Different layer of planning Pro Tip: Don't bring newborn to Gen Con! Kids area in the Exhibit Hall Kid-friendly events Cosplay with Kids. Halloween costume made early! Summer came early this year, and it has us already dreaming of weekends at the beach or up in the mountains, kicking back in a hammock with a book between our hands. So we put together a show to highlight some of the season's top reads, in case you're thinking of packing your knapsack and heading for the hills (or at least the park)."Every Anxious Wave" by Mo DaviauMo Daviau is a former college radio DJ who dreamt up her novel, "Every Anxious Wave," over the turntable. It centers around a middle-age dive bar owner named Karl Bender, who’s only kind of hung up about the loss of his glory days playing guitar in an indie rock sensation. When a super-smart friend opens up a wormhole in the space-time continuum, Karl does what any self-respecting middle-aged hipster would do: he starts going back in time to see his favorite shows. And he meets his match, a brainy physicist named Lena.Remembering Katherine Dunn, the author of "Geek Love" - 11:34We remember writer Katherine Dunn with Willamette Week editor and publisher Mark Zusman. Dunn, best known for her 1989 award-winning novel “Geek Love,” passed away Wednesday at the age of 70. (This story replaced the interview with Katie Chase about "Man and Wife" in the original podcast. It will air next week.) "On the Folly of Loving Life" by Monica Drake - 20:24Monica Drake is one of Portland’s better known contemporary bards. Her 2007 novel, "Clown Girl," followed a young woman navigating a scene not unlike Northeast Portland’s famous Alberta Street Clown House. "The Stud Book," which followed in 2013, was a scathing, hilarious, and surprisingly tender meditation on how we create family. This week we had Monica in to tell us about her newest adventure — into the world of interconnected short stories — with "The Folly of Loving Life.""Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight - 30:28The notoriously private Nike founder and philanthropist Phil Knight has taken to the court and the spotlight with the release of his memoir, "Shoe Dog." "Complex" magazine called it “more like 'The Lord of the Rings' than a typical mogul memoir,” and it brought ESPN’s Darren Rovel to tears. Earlier this month, Knight sat down with “New Yorker” writer and essayist Adam Gopnik at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall to talk everything from the origins of the swoosh to going to school with Ken Kesey. You can hear their full conversation at the Literary Arts' Archive Project."Roller Girl" by Victoria Jamieson - 39:10Victoria Jamieson has written other books for kids and teaches children’s literature at Pacific Northwerst College of Art, but in her spare time, she skates with the Rose City Rollers Wreckers team under the name of Winnie the Pow. So perhaps it's no surprise her graphic novel for middle-grade readers, "Roller Girl," is a coming-of-age tale in which girls get in touch with their deeper selves by skating around and hitting each other. The book is also about the very messy social geometry that happens when kids move beyond their elementary school friendships. The book was published last year, and this year was listed for a Newberry Honor.

This book is not only as funny as you might expect, but it’s also a touching story about family, as well as an insightful glimpse into the life of a seemingly ordinary suburban podiatrist who suddenly finds himself in a life altering situation. Next up we have comedian/actor Mateen Stewart, who brings us a pillar of colonial literature, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Unfortunately, we have one of our glitches just as Mateen says the name of the book, so my apologies, but it was a great conversation about a really important book. This book, the story of a man faced with the destruction of his family and his nation by the forces of colonialism is a haunting tale, made all the more frightening by it’s connection to reality. Some real life horrors are worse than any fiction, and this book is both a great novel as well as a great testament to the truth of colonialism. The horrors in our next book, brought to us by our returning favorite, Hannah Gansen, are of the freak show variety, as we discuss the very popular Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. This is a book that comes up over and over it seems, people keep recommending it to me, and they seem to have a deep connection to this twisted tale about a family of freaks. And I suppose that’s what this show’s all about, getting a good recommendation for something you might not otherwise read, and so after my talk with Hannah, I’m looking forward to diving into this one! All in all, another fun episode! I hope you enjoy! In our second episode we manage to rein in our show to a manageable one hour despite having super-stoner Tony Camin from ‘The Marijuana-logues' as a guest. Joining him is ‘The Tonight Show’ warm up comic and ‘@Midnight’ winner Seth Herzog, as well as the hilarious Kristen Carney from such shows as ‘Loveline’ and ‘The Adam Corolla Show’. In addition to recommending three great books, ‘The Confederacy of Dunces’ by John Kennedy Toole, ‘Black Market Billions’ by Hitha Prabhakar, and ‘Stiff’ by Mary Roach, we delve into such hot button issues as smoking pot backstage at ‘The Jimmy Kimmel Show’, ‘Geek Love’ by Katherine Dunn, ‘Adaptation’ by Spike Jonze, ‘Silicon Valley’ on HBO, 90’s band Crash Test Dummies, and we end with a tribute to legendary Science Fiction writer Terry Pratchett.

Our first listener-recommended book, this 1989 novel about a family of traveling carnival freaks was a finalist for the National Book Award. But will it withstand the scrutiny of your persnickity Book Fight hosts? Talking points include: the importance of clarity, Mike's lack of Star Trek knowledge, italics, and Itchy v. Scratchy.
