P08-Diagnostic Cytopathology Cell Block Preparation Methods- Anna Patterson FIBMS MSc CSci Diagnostic Cytology Scheme Coordinator Helen Naylor MSc Diagnostic Cytology Technical Specialist Cell blocks from Cytopathology samples have always had value in the diagnostic process as a complement to the traditional Cytopathology stains – Papanicolaou and Romanowsky.  This has become more important to provide material for Immunocytochemistry to refine malignant diagnosis, and more recently, for the use of molecular testing to aid in the choice of tailored chemotherapy regimens.  If this information can be obtained from Cytopathology samples, which are less invasive than biopsy samples, the patient will benefit. A variety of preparation methods are available for the preparation of cell blocks from cells from Diagnostic Cytopathology samples.  The most popular methods will be discussed and how they can be used to optimise the quality of cell preservation if used correctly. Information garnered from the results of the recently introduced UK NEQAS CPT Diagnostic Cytopathology Cell block scheme will be presented and how this information can be circulated to laboratories experiencing difficulties with their preparation methods as an advisory service. This will include. • Understanding the clinical importance and diagnostic purpose of correct procedures in Diagnostic Cytopathology Cell Block preparation. • Identifying and determining factors affecting best practice and quality in Diagnostic Cytopathology Cell Block practice and how to resolve them. • Identifying and understanding the causes of artefacts experienced in Diagnostic Cytopathology Cell Block preparation methods and how to eliminate and prevent them. P11- Participating In A Digital Diagnostic Cytopathology Interpretive Proficiency Testing (iEQA) Scheme -Helen Naylor, Anna Patterson, Chantell Hodgson, Ashley Makela The iLabXCell Digital Diagnostic Cytopathology Interpretive Proficiency Testing Scheme or iEQA is facilitated by UK NEQAS Cellular Pathology Technique (CPT), and is designed to promote quality, excellence, and education for all involved in screening and reporting of Diagnostic Cytopathology. It is open to medical and non-medical staff, trainees, advanced practitioners, and staff associated with Cytopathology. iEQA provides superior, outstanding, and representative case examples for individuals to examine in a remote setting and submit an opinion via the user-friendly digital platform.  Offering 2 circulations annually it provides • Easy access for registration  • Ability to choose specimen types  • Advanced slide viewing • Clinical details to assist diagnoses • Categorisation of images using benign or malignant  Flexibility Remote learning allows participants to continue learning alongside their peers, in an environment accommodating their needs. It allows the flexibility of international participants to access the platform at any time, convenient to them. Remote learning via the iEQA platform, offers the flexibility for users to pick up learning where they left it – anywhere, anytime, from any location. Self-paced learning Traditional learning has long failed to acknowledge the individualised nature of learning, opting instead for a generalised approach that may not be optimised for everyone. One of the many benefits of this iEQA is providing participants more independence to: • Spend more time on cases/case types they find difficult • Revisit the images as often as they need  Environmental benefits Digitising slides has led to a decrease in physical resources previously necessary for iEQA to function. Everything participants need is accessible on-line, eliminating the historical environmental impact and the time taken for circulations to be distributed and completed.   Future developments An on-line educational image library, containing images of Diagnostic Cytopathology cases of urines, serous fluids, respiratory and head and neck cases used in previous circulations for educational and training purposes.

CAN MACHINES REPLACE US? (AI vs Humanity) - Maria Santacaterina

Maria Santacaterina, with her background in the humanities, brings a critical perspective on the current state and future implications of AI technology, its impact on society, and the nature of human intelligence and creativity. She emphasizes that despite technological advancements, AI lacks fundamental human traits such as consciousness, empathy, intuition, and the ability to engage in genuine creative processes. Maria argues that AI, at its core, processes data but does not have the capability to understand or generate new, intrinsic meaning or ideas as humans do. Throughout the conversation, Maria highlights her concern about the overreliance on AI in critical sectors such as healthcare, the justice system, and business. She stresses that while AI can serve as a tool, it should not replace human judgment and decision-making. Maria points out that AI systems often operate on past data, which may lead to outdated or incorrect decisions if not carefully managed. The discussion also touches upon the concept of "adaptive resilience", which Maria describes in her book. She explains adaptive resilience as the capacity for individuals and enterprises to evolve and thrive amidst challenges by leveraging technology responsibly, without undermining human values and capabilities. A significant portion of the conversation focussed on ethical considerations surrounding AI. Tim and Maria agree that there's a pressing need for strong governance and ethical frameworks to guide AI development and deployment. They discuss how AI, without proper ethical considerations, risks exacerbating issues like privacy invasion, misinformation, and unintended discrimination. Maria is skeptical about claims of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or a technological singularity where machines surpass human intelligence in all aspects. She argues that such scenarios neglect the complex, dynamic nature of human intelligence and consciousness, which cannot be fully replicated or replaced by machines. Tim and Maria discuss the importance of keeping human agency and creativity at the forefront of technology development. Maria asserts that efforts to automate or standardize complex human actions and decisions are misguided and could lead to dehumanizing outcomes. They both advocate for using AI as an aid to enhance human capabilities rather than a substitute. In closing, Maria encourages a balanced approach to AI adoption, urging stakeholders to prioritize human well-being, ethical standards, and societal benefit above mere technological advancement. The conversation ends with Maria pointing people to her book for more in-depth analysis and thoughts on the future interaction between humans and technology. The concept of categorizing employees based on the Skill-Will Matrix is an insightful approach to understanding and managing workforce diversity. This matrix splits employees into four primary groups, each reflecting a unique combination of skill (competence in their job role) and will (motivation or engagement towards their tasks). Understanding these categories enables managers to tailor their leadership style and developmental strategies to suit each group's needs, thus enhancing overall productivity and job satisfaction. Diane Abbott, MP for Hackney North has found herself in some hot water for suggesting that white people cannot experience racism, but rather can be victims of prejudice. She makes the distinction that while different types of white people have gone through maltreatment due to their differences, this does not compare to the collective struggle of black people in for example apartheid South Africa or during the transatlantic slave trade. In this episode, I dissect her comments and the outrage that ensued. I delve a little into why she is a victim of semantics. The categories of race are meaningless and have long been exposed to be junk science. Trying to make statements about what forms a race and who therefore can experience racism is essentially why we get incoherent arguments like the ones she made and the ones made in the article she was responding to. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/prolhistory/message

Nihilism is permeating in Western Societies but it's starting to spread across the world. Distrust in politics, economy, financial markets, science, and perhaps even technology.  It isn't just the bifurcation of ideology but the classification of people, failed monetary policies, diversion from value to price, and widespread misinformation and propaganda. Has everything lost its meaning and value? In this episode, we bring back Jim Mosquera from Episode #24 Reflections on Freedom, to talk about why there's nihilism in pretty much everything we see today and the way out of it. Perhaps we are at the end of the era of Pax Americana and heading towards the Dark Ages. However, we discuss there is a way to mitigate this situation. Here's what we talk about in this episode,- Decimation of religion debased morality - Digitisation of society weakens the physical social fabric- Categorisation of people widens gaps in society- Ambiguity created by relying on science- Decentralisation is about localizing  Jim is a founder of Alliance University that provides a marketplace of knowledge that is dedicated to empowering people to create an objective and fair society. Introduction Hinduism is the world’s oldest living religion, and it won’t be disappearing any time soon. This ancient worldview currently boasts over one billion devotees, making it the third most popular religion in the world. Despite its popularity, scholarship in philosophy of religion continues to ignore its influence, with academic papers on the Abrahamic faiths vastly outnumbering those devoted to Hinduism. Our classrooms don’t paint a prettier picture. In UK schools, Hinduism is scarcely taught in comparison to the other major world religions, with reports showing that educators lack the confidence and subject knowledge to teach Hinduism properly. Fortunately, thanks to the work of scholars such as Jessica Frazier, things are changing. Jessica Frazier is Lecturer in Theology and Religion at Trinity College, Oxford and Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies. Frazier is one of the world’s leading experts on Hindu philosophy, reshaping and globalising philosophy of religion for the 21st century. As well as being the founding editor of the Journal of Hindu Studies, she is best known for her books Reality, Religion and Passion, The Bloomsbury Companion to Hindu Studies, and most recently, Hindu Worldviews: Theories of Self, Ritual and Reality. Far from your ivory tower academic, Jessica is a committed public philosopher, broadening the horizons of academics and the general public through her captivating writing style and regular media appearances.  As we will see, Frazier’s work demonstrates Hinduism's rich and insightful philosophical tradition; a tradition that can shed light on life’s greatest questions: from the nature of life, god and suffering, to the fundamental structure of reality. Individual Differences in the Connectivity of Left and Right Anterior Temporal Lobes Relate to Modality and Category Effects in Semantic Categorisation

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.06.22.140509v1?rss=1 Authors: Gonzalez Alam, T. R., Krieger-Redwood, K., Evans, M., Rice, G. E., Smallwood, J., Jefferies, E. Abstract: Contemporary neuroscientific accounts suggest that ventral anterior temporal lobe (ATL) regions act as a bilateral heteromodal semantic hub. However, research also shows graded functional differences between the hemispheres relating to linguistic versus non-linguistic semantic tasks and to knowledge of objects versus people. Individual differences in connectivity from bilateral ATL and between left and right ATL might therefore give rise to differences in function within this system. We investigated whether the relative strength of intrinsic connectivity from left and right ATL would relate to differences in performance on semantic tasks. We examined resting-state fMRI in 74 individuals and, in a separate session, examined semantic categorisation, manipulating stimulus type (famous faces versus landmarks) and modality of presentation (visual versus verbal). We found that people with greater connectivity between left and right ATL were more efficient at categorising landmarks, especially when these were presented visually. In addition, participants who showed stronger connectivity from right than left ATL to medial occipital cortex showed more efficient semantic categorisation of landmarks regardless of modality of presentation. These findings show that individual differences in the intrinsic connectivity of left and right ATL are associated with effects of category and modality in semantic categorisation. The results can be interpreted in terms of graded differences in the strengths of inputs from "spoke" regions, such as regions of visual cortex, to a bilateral yet partially segregated semantic "hub", encompassing left and right ATL. He also advises us to consider segmenting stakeholders using whatever criteria are useful to the project in hand, and reminds us that using averages to calculate durations can be very effective in the right circumstances (e.g. when considering programmes or portfolios). This interview is also available as a video at http://bit.ly/ScaryScarsThis is one of Pragmatic PMO's interview series "Successes and Scars Shared", in which Ken Burrell talks to Real Project Managers about what they have learned from things that have gone well on their projects (successes) and things that have gone wrong (scars), so that we can all learn from their experiences.Sharing short, sharp, project lessons interviews like this is just one of the pragmatic pointers recommended in Ken's book “Learning lessons from Projects: How it works, why it goes wrong, and how it you can do it better”, available from Amazon http://bit.ly/KensLLBook

Today we speak with Professor Robert Krueger, Distinguished McKnight University Professor, Hathaway Distinguished Professor, and the Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota. Professor Krueger’s work spans the fields of personality and personality disorders, psychometrics, and genetics, and is centred on developing an empirically-based system of grouping and delineating psychopathology. This is a topic that I think is important to the way we think about mental health and conduct research into it. And I couldn’t hope to have to have a more qualified guest to discuss the topic with. Professor Krueger was a member of the DSM-5 Personality and Personality Disorders Work group, and is an architect of the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology a new, dimensional classification system of psychiatric problems.
