Will Pets Be the First European Consumers of Cultivated Meat? Meatly is Betting on It

If you follow the world of cultivated meat, you probably know that a few companies have gotten historic regulatory approval and have sold some limited quantities of product both in the US and Singapore. But earlier this year, Meatly—a company founded only in 2021 and with just a few million British pounds in their pocket—succeeded in getting regulatory approval to start selling its cultivated chicken meat…in pet food. This was the first-ever European approval for a cultivated meat product, and the first-ever approval for such a product in the pet food space. And as someone with a dog who sadly makes his distaste for plant-based dog food very clear, I can assure you that I'm eager to see if my dog Eddie will enjoy Meatly's debut product.  In this episode, I talk with Meatly CEO Owen Ensor about his journey from starting the company to now. We discuss the scale he's at, the cost structure of his product, the inclusion rates in pet food he anticipates, what stores he plans to sell in at first, how he'll fund the company, when he thinks cultivated meat may make a dent in total meat demand, and much more.  It's a riveting conversation with someone making headlines across the alt-meat world. Will pet food be the gateway for cultivated meat's market entrance? You be the judge. Discussed in this episode Owen became vegan after watching Cowspiracy. Owen's chart showing the timeline to regulatory approval for various cultivated meat companies. Paul's essay on pet food's contribution to total meat demand. Bond is another company growing chicken protein for the pet market. You can see Paul's dog Eddie enjoying it here. Our past episodes with Jim Mellon from Agronomics and Mark Post from Mosa Meat. Owen recommends reading Good to Great. More about Owen Ensor Owen is the Founding CEO of Meatly. Since establishing Meatly in 2021, with only £3.5m in funding, it has become the first company in Europe to get regulatory approval for cultivated meat, developed industry-leading technical processes, and created the world's first cultivated pet food products. Before establishing Meatly, Owen started his career at the Management Consultancy company Bain and scaled one of the world's first insect protein facilities.

Interview with Mark Child, CEO of Condor Gold PLCOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/condor-gold-cnr-primed-for-a-take-over-2557Recording date: 16th September 2024Condor Gold PLC, a London and Toronto-listed mining company, presents an intriguing investment opportunity in the gold sector with its La India project in Nicaragua. The company has positioned itself as a potential acquisition target, offering investors exposure to a high-grade, fully-permitted gold asset in a rising precious metals market. The La India project boasts a substantial 2.4 million ounce gold resource, with an impressive grade of 4 grams per tonne. Half of this resource is open pit, while the other half is underground. Condor Gold has completed a bankable feasibility study on the main pit, which represents about 40% of the total ounces.CEO Mark Child outlines three production scenarios:Reserve Case: 82,000 ounces of gold per annumOpen Pit Scenario: 120,000 ounces per annum (including feeder pits)Combined Open Pit and Underground: 150,000 ounces per annumA key strength of the project is its "shovel ready" status. Condor Gold has secured all necessary permits for construction and operation, as well as acquired all required surface rights, investing $45 million in land acquisition across 55 plots. This comprehensive approach significantly de-risks the project for potential buyers. The economic potential of La India is substantial, particularly in the current gold price environment. At $1,600/oz gold, the project demonstrates robust economics with a 23% IRR for the reserve pit. At $2,000/oz gold, EBITDA more than doubles to approximately $750 million for the reserve pit alone. The high-grade nature of the deposit provides significant leverage to gold prices, with minimal change in operating costs as prices rise. One of the most attractive aspects of the La India project is its relatively modest capital expenditure requirement of $105 million. This low initial capital outlay broadens the pool of potential acquirers, as it's within reach for mid-tier producers and even some junior miners. However, investors should be aware of the jurisdictional risks associated with Nicaragua. While the government is supportive of mining and there are other operating mines in the country, Nicaragua faces international scrutiny due to concerns about its democratic processes, resulting in U.S. sanctions on certain individuals and entities. These sanctions, while a consideration, do not directly impact mining operations.Condor Gold has engaged Hannam & Partners to run a formal sale process, with at least eight companies under confidentiality agreements and more expressing interest. The company's largest shareholder and chairman, Jim Mellon, who owns 26% of the company, is leading the sale negotiations, seeking a valuation that reflects the project's true worth. For investors, the significant disconnect between the company's market valuation (approximately $60 million) and the project's net present value (ranging from $350 million to $900 million) presents a potential opportunity. Any announcement of a transaction could result in a substantial re-rating of the stock. In conclusion, Condor Gold offers a high-risk, high-reward proposition for investors bullish on gold and willing to navigate the complexities of frontier market mining. The company's advanced-stage, high-grade asset, coupled with the ongoing sale process, provides a unique opportunity for potential value realization in the near term. However, investors should carefully consider the jurisdictional risks and uncertainties surrounding the sale process when evaluating this investment opportunity.View Condor Gold's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/condor-goldSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Has science cracked the code on mass producing realistic meat substitutes? Or are lab-gown alternative proteins an impossible dream? In this week's episode of Cleaning Up, Baroness Bryony Worthington sits down with president of the Good Food Institute, Bruce Friedrich, to explore the future of food. Friedrich details his vision for a more sustainable food system through technologies like plant-based and cultivated meat and outlines the promising progress and significant challenges remaining in scaling these novel proteins. His most recent book called "Moo's Law" focuses on the investment opportunities in the field of cellular agriculture, which is a production of proteins and materials directly from stem cells.  Jim Mellon co-founded Agronomics to invest in a portfolio of leading companies in this sector, as he is its largest investor. In this conversation, we dig into this new area, we talk about the case for change, the challenges and opportunities, some of the people, and some of the nations that are driving and supporting these forward thinking cell-ag companies. What We Cover:  - How Jim developed his interest in biotech, longevity and cellular agriculture - Why industrial agriculture needs to change and what cell-ag offers to the world - The concepts of Moo's Law and griddle parity  - Which different categories of industry cellular agriculture are disrupting and revolutionising - The current state of cell-ag markets and products, and why Middle Eastern countries are faster to adopt this new industry - What challenges are facing the ramp up of cell-ag - The attractive characteristics of cell-ag companies for investors  - When we can expect cell-ag meat and fish to enter the European and US markets on larger scale Key Learnings and Takeaways:  - Moo's law suggests that as scale increases in the manufacture of foods in laboratory conditions, the efficiency will go up and the price will come down - Food-insecure countries such as Middle Eastern countries which import most of their food, will provide a model for implementing cell-ag for larger markets, such as the UK, EU and USA - The challenges facing cell-ag industry are performance of the stem cell lines on massive scale, using animals to continually provide more stem cells, and the execution of startup companies in this field   Links and Resources Mentioned in This Episode:  - Agronomics https://agronomics.im/  - Juvenescence https://www.juvlabs.com/  - ‘Moo's Law: An Investor's Guide to the New Agrarian Revolution' by Jim Mellon https://mooslawbook.com/  - 'Juvenescence: Investing in the Age of Longevity' by Jim Mellon https://www.amazon.com/Juvenescence-Investing-longevity-Mellon-Jim/dp/0993047815/  - 'Cracking the Code: Understand and Profit from the Biotech Revolution That Will Transform Our Lives and Generate Fortunes' by Jim Mellon https://www.amazon.com/Jim-Mellon/dp/1119963184/  - Blue Nalu https://www.bluenalu.com/  - Ivy Farm Technologies https://www.ivy.farm/  - Mohnish Pabrai: Cloning, Learning from Charlie Munger, 100 Baggers on OutsideVoices https://outsidelens.com/mohnish-pabrai-cloning/ - Joel Greenblatt: The Common Sense of Long-Term Investing on OutsideVoices https://outsidelens.com/joel-greenblatt-the-common-sense-of-long-term-investing/ Connect with Mark Bidwell: - LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/markbidwell/  - Twitter https://twitter.com/markehb

How often have you wished that more billionaires used their money to do good in the world? Well, you’re in luck, because in this episode we talk with British billionaire Jim Mellon. In recent years Jim’s been most well-known for his work on human longevity research, which we discuss. But he’s also become fixated on ending the factory farming of animals. As a result, Jim has learned an immensity about alternative protein and has invested in dozens of start-ups in the space via his fund Agronomics. He’s even just published a book on the topic, Moo’s Law, in which he discusses his views on the industry, which companies he thinks will be winners, and yes, which he thinks won’t make it.  As you’ll hear in this interview, Jim has little hope that humans will give up eating meat, so he’s betting instead on simply making meat without the animals.  In this conversation we discuss when he thinks such clean meat will be price comparable to conventional meat, whether price parity is sufficient, where he sees white spaces, and more.  So enjoy this wide-ranging conversation with a truly interesting person who’s given a lot of thought to just how he can use his role as an investor to solve some of the most pressing problems we face. Discussed in this episode Our past episodes with philosopher Peter Singer, BlueNalu’s Lou Cooperhouse, and Shiok Meat’s Sandhya Sriram. The Good Food Institute Startup Manual. More about Jim Mellon Jim Mellon’s investment philosophy is underpinned by his ability to recognize emerging trends that give rise to new industries or major shifts in markets. This includes the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, as foreseen in the first book Jim co-authored entitled Wake Up!, and subsequently in the new science and technologies detailed in Cracking the Code and Fast Forward.  More recently Jim has established himself as a thought leader in the nascent field of aging research and longevity as well as a key investor in alternative proteins, through his company Agronomics. He is interested in keeping the world healthy and properly and ethically fed and forecasts great investment opportunities in both these areas.  Jim Mellon also runs Master Investor to provide tips and forecasting insights to the investor community. His wealth of knowledge and vast experience allows him to capitalize on sound investments upon which he has built a worldwide business empire. Jim is serially amongst the top 10% in the Sunday Times Rich List and holds a master’s degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford.

The agriculture industry's economic landscape is changing—and fast. Jim Mellon's new book, Moo's Law, helps readers understand the quickly evolving investment landscape in cultivated and plant-based proteins. Recently, he sat down with Sentient Media Founder Mikko Jarvenpaa to unpack the alternative protein market, what investors should be doing, what they shouldn't be doing, and what they have to look forward to.“When consumers are confronted with the choice of meat or seafood that has no hormones, no antibiotics, no toxins, nothing that's bad for you and possibly stuff that's good for you,” says Mellon, “and a very positive environmental and animal impact, why wouldn't they do it, especially if it's cheaper than the conventional stuff?”Mellon is betting that cultivated meat and seafood won't just be popular. He thinks they'll change the industry entirely. “I was skeptical when I first started writing the book that was going to happen,” says Mellon. “But I'm convinced it's going to happen now. I think [the agriculture industry] is going to be an industry that is taken over much faster than any other industry in recent history.”About Sentient MediaAll proceeds from this event go directly into funding Sentient Media.Sentient Media is a nonprofit media organization that produces independent reporting on farmed animal lives and our broken food system. Our mission is to increase public awareness of key issues that matter to all of us: the treatment and well-being of all sentient beings and the health of our planet. We believe exposure is the first step toward behavioral change. Today Rob is joined by the international investor, author, and billionaire Jim Mellon. Jim is an expert in fund management, investment, and biotechnology. Together Rob and Jim discuss the impact COVID will have on business, how cycles of disruption are becoming faster and how to use your money for the greater good.   KEY TAKEAWAYS The internet has allowed the flow of information to be so much faster. The effect of that on entrepreneurship is that companies can rise and fall much faster because it is so much easier to start-up companies and therefore allows for greater competition. The internet has also allowed for collaborations en masse.   Covid is likely to be the development of novel technologies, drugs, and therapies to protect older cohorts. This is because COVID is a gerolavic disease as it mainly affects elderly people. The reason why many elderly are dying from COVID is that their immune system is compromised, the process of building up their immunity has been accelerated because we cannot afford to go through another pandemic.   There are three things everyone has got to remember. The first is ‘curiosity' if you're going to be successful you have to look at everything and see the opportunity. Secondly ‘application' is important, apply yourself daily to reach good results. Finally, focus on getting the right business model in the first place, do not try to do too much at once.   Most people who go to university at 18, really don't know what they want to do with their lives. Generally speaking, University is a good thing, you don't just learn something which may or may not be relevant to your future endeavors but you also create a large network of people.   There is nothing wrong with accumulating more money as long as you have got good intentions with it and you are not just going to sit on it and do nothing with it or abuse it. It doesn't matter how much money you have, don't waste it.   if we are going to get richer, happier, and have more time for leisure and knowledge, then you need to start thinking about what are the great upcoming trends that will eclipse everything we have seen in the past century. Those disruptive factors will have an impact on absolutely everyone, if you think you are in a safe job, you're not as everything is subject to much faster cycles of disruption than it was in the past.       BEST MOMENTS “Information can never be unlearnt.” “You make your luck” “If you want to be successful you have got to work” “If you go to bed early you will be healthy, wealthy, and wise.” “For some people that is daunting. For others, it is an opportunity.”   ABOUT THE GUEST Jim Mellon is an international investor with interests in several industries. After leaving Oxford, where he studied PPE, (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) he worked in Asia and the United States for two fund management companies, GT and Thornton, before establishing his own business in 1991. His business operations include two components, alisted fund management company called Charlemagne Capital, and an Asian mining group, Regent Pacific. Also, Mr. Mellon is the Co-Chairman of West African Minerals Corporation and Regent Pacific Group. He is on the board of several public quoted companies, including Brazilian Gold Corporation, Charlemagne Capital Limited, Manx Financial Group, Plethora Solutions, Polo Resources, Port Erin Biopharma Investments Limited, and the Speymill plc. He is the life tenant of a trust which owns the Burnbrae Group, which has substantial assets in the biotechnology, financial services, property, mining, and leisure sectors. In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, my guest is Jim Mellon, a British entrepreneur, investor, author and global philanthropist. We talk about the financial investments that are leading to real-time breakthroughs in human longevity, as well as developments in cellular agriculture that can feed a planet—without harming any animals.Where I think Jim is pulling a bit of a Ninja move is that he sees the goal of having old people who have brains that work and have bodies that work and have a ton of energy and a ton of wisdom. And that's the world where I'd like to live in. That's how we lift our society up. That's how we stop making the same cyclical mistakes that each generation has to figure out. So, I'm excited by that vision! “We are talking about disruption,” Jim says. “We're talking about execution. We're talking about future areas of opportunity. I would say that none of us know where it's going to end up in 10 years, but we do know that it's going to be radically different. Curiosity is a major component of success. You have to keep on seeking out and not discounting things just because they seem a bit radical.”Jim’s known for his ability to recognize emerging trends that turn into new industries or major shifts in markets. This includes the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, new science and technologies, and now the field of aging research and longevity. He’s working with biotech and life sciences companies that are looking at the mechanisms of aging. Currently underway are an FDA-approved migraine solution; a ketone ester; organ regeneration; and new drug applications. There are five things that kill 70% of the 140,000 people that die every day on the planet (excluding COVID-19): stroke, cancer, Alzheimer's, obesity, and respiratory disease. “Those diseases, which are diseases of aging, are being addressed,” Jim says. The research and product and clinical trials are moving at warp speed with the help of AI. So many people still believe that it’s not possible to influence the aging process, Jim says, but there’s incredible potential in this industry. There’s also great potential in cellular agriculture to help solve how we’ll feed the billions of people on our planet. “There's a very high level of purity and all sorts of environmental positives to it,” Jim says, “but it's sort of at a very early stage.”Listen on to learn more about the developments in longevity and sustainable food solutions that are changing our world right now.Enjoy the show! ‘Ageing is nothing but Evolutionary Negligence' that can be remedied by Technology. According to Dr. Kris Verburgh, Technology will help us all to live for hundreds of years, keeping our health, cognitive functions and youthful looks. This belief drives Tech companies such as Google and Amazon, to invest hundreds of millions of USD into the science of Longevity. Amongst the main Longevity investors are Jeff Bezos, Jim Mellon, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Together with Dr. Kris Verburgh, one of the top longevity experts, author of ‘The Longevity Code' and a Venture Partner of the 100 million USD ‘Longevity Vision Fund', we discuss how Gene Editing, 3D-Bio-Printing and Stem Cell Therapy will soon be part of eradicating the root cause of lethal diseases such as cancer. Growing human organs in the bodies of GMO Pigs, will become a normal way to keep our human bodies ‘up to speed'. As the 21st century brings about a new Biotech Revolution, we will be able to program and RE-program the Human DNA. However, Bio Hacking also brings the risk of Bio Terror, i.e. create lethal viruses. The right Diet is the ‘low tech' approach to slow down the aging process. Dr. Verburgh developed the ‘Hourglass Diet' which recommends to avoid refined sugars, dairy and animal proteins as they damage our cells. Fasting is a powerful tool to help to body in repairing the damage caused by our daily lifestyle. His Key advise for Life: ‘Knowledge is Gold and Power, so read a lot. If you read only 3 books about a subject, you'll know more about it than 99% of the entire population. Be critical and check out the information you receive, especially by the media. Be kind and generous because it feels good and remember: what goes around comes around?!' This week, Jim shared an amazing story about how his house church is meeting on a Zoom call on Sundays. People are flocking to be a part. People from Killeen, TX, Detroit, Seattle and Afghanistan. It's great church where everyone "get to play" just like Paul described in 1 Cor. 14:26. Welcome to the 35th CONKERS’ CORNER recorded on 21st November 2016. In this interview I have the pleasure of speaking with @timfprice Tim Price the awarding winning Fund Manager, Author and co-founder/Director of PFP Wealth Management. This business is a UK-based investment and financial advisory practice which advises on and manages £1.5 billion in client assets and is designed to provide investors with global exposure to managers pursuing value investment strategies. Tim is also a columnist for MoneyWeek magazine where he runs an investment advisory service, The Price Report gives individual investors the chance to hear the very latest views, insights and specific tips from top-level City investors and professional managers. Tim graduated with a BA in English language and literature from Christ Church, Oxford University in 1991. He “fully intended to pursue a job in Media” but sadly found that there were not that many jobs suitable for him. The first job that he could find was that of a Fixed Income Salesman in the Bond Markets in what was then a Japanese Bank. It later became Paribas Capital Markets and later Merrill Lynch. Tim helped to set up an award-winning investment management department at Ansbacher & Co. in 2001. He then moved to Union Bancaire Privée (UBP) in London where he was the Chief Investment Officer, global strategies, helping to manage over $1 billion in an absolute return programme for institutional clients. Tim Price has now worked in the capital markets for more than 25 years, his accumulated knowledge, insights and experience led to him being approached by Harriman House to write a book. The result is his first book: “Investing Through The Looking Glass: A Rational Guide to Irrational Financial Markets” for Harriman House https://harriman-house.com/search/results?res=tim+price&x=0&y=0 In his book Tim identifies and questions several investment myths and misconceptions. He questions whether stock markets inevitably rise over the longer term, whether bonds continue to be relevant as a fail safe low-risk asset and whether professional fund managers represent “smart money”. Having identified the problems besetting today’s investor, the focus then moves on to practical guidance to help investors preserve and grow their capital in this age of inflationary and deflationary uncertainty. Jim Mellon, Investor and Chairman, Burnbrae Ltd emphatically states: “Tim Price is one of the most cogent commentators on markets; this book contains wisdom and ideas that every investor should take note of. Tim has summarised the follies of Central Bankers, the avarice and general uselessness of financial advisers, and the bubble in asset prices that currently prevails. He comes up with a Manifesto which is designed to save us from the disastrous policies of the past two decades and to preserve and enhance capital. I thoroughly recommend Through the Looking Glass.” Listen now to gain insights into how Tim presents a route map for navigating one of the most challenging financial environments that anyone has ever seen. Welcome to the 43rd CONKERS’ CORNER recorded on 25th March 2017 at the Master Investor Show in Islington. In this interview I have the pleasure of speaking to Jim Mellon @jimmhk the renowned serial entrepreneur, self-made multi-millionaire investor, best selling author and the owner of the Master Investor Show. As one of Britain’s richest individuals with his wealth estimated to be exceeding £900 million, Jim has been described as our very own Warren Buffett. The son of a diplomat, he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University, where he attained his Master’s Degree. However unlike many of his peers, he chose not go into the world of politics as he had travelled widely whilst he was young and had always intended to travel as soon he finished his studies. He was offered six jobs and chose to begin his career as a trainee Fund Manager with GT Management (now owned by Invesco) in Hong Kong. He has readily admitted that at the time, “I only had a vague idea of the workings of shares and bonds”. Jim made a great success of his time with GT Management, however when he was around 24 years of age his first boss and mentor at GT, Richard Thornton left the business. They sent about setting up their own Fund Management business and co-founded Thornton Management. By the time Jim was 28 years of age he was millionaire. After more than six years with Thornton, Jim set up his own business in 1991, now known as Charlemagne Capital and Regent Pacific. Alongside these businesses, he also has a private investment company, the Burnbrae Group, which makes up most of his vast investment endeavours, all of which have made him a potential future self made investor billionaire. Jim has also co-written several best selling books with Al Chalabi which you can find here http://www.burnbrae.com/books . Their new book “Juvenescence: Investing in the Age of longevity” will be released next month, and you can pre-order a copy now at https://www.juvenescence-book.com/ . For those that are intrigued by the title of the book, Juvenescence means “the state or period of being young”. The book discusses the benefits of a healthy life; what is good and detrimental for us and the breakthrough technologies that will enable all of us to live longer, as well as potentially invest in. In the discussion and video with Jim, he provides an insight into the journey that he has taken, which so far has encompassed Fund Management, Investing, Emerging Markets, Asia, Russia, America, Technology, Healthcare, being an Author, Private Investor and much much more. The topics we discussed include: Making informed decisions; Educational philanthropy; Pensions; Financial risks; Investing Strategy; Investment lessons learned; Russian Mafia; His life at risk; Master Investor Show; “Curiosity, Adaptability & Application”; No easy route to riches; Investing; Collaboration of information; Sharing of information; His new book : ‘Juvenescence’; Risks; Longevity. He has experienced several financial crashes and also turned around Regent Pacific from the brink of collapse after the Russian financial crisis. Jim stresses, “Like everyone, I have made a tremendous amount of mistakes”. Listen now to gain insights into how Jim Mellon selects, researches and filters his investments in order to find the best cutting edge long-term potential opportunities for his investing empire.
