It's a summer triple threat here on the Talkin' TV Podcast! Luk is back to discuss an interesting triple threat, as they all encompass where we're at as a media viewing society right now. First up is Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the fourth installment in the Bad Boys saga once again directed by Adil & Bilal who up their action filmmaking game in an effort that sees Mike (Will Smith) and Markus (Martin Lawrence) have to go on the run after uncovering corruption in their department. Then they talk about the Acolyte, the latest Disney+ Star Wars effort from Leslye Headland starring Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung Jae, Dafne Keene, Jodie Turner Smith, Charlie Bartlett, Manny Jacinto & Carrie Anne Moss. Finally, they talk about Hit Man, the latest effort from Richard Linklater and Netflix which stars Glen Powell as a college professor who moonlights as an FBI agent who poses as a hitman to entrap people but ends up getting a little too invested in it. This week, we're digging into the 2007 Anton Yelchin/Kat Dennings dark comedy, "Charlie Bartlett." Editor - Jon Poll THE COLOR PURPLE editor Jon Poll was sure they had the wrong guy when his agent told him they were interested in having him come aboard as the editor.  He even joked they should probably call WHIPLASH and LA LA LAND editor, Tom Cross ACE.  While musicals were not necessarily a big part of Jon's background coming into the project, no one who sees THE COLOR PURPLE would ever question his prowess for interweaving a powerful narrative with incredible music. THE COLOR PURPLE is a story of love and resilience, based on the novel and the Broadway musical of the same name.  It is a decades-spanning tale of one woman's journey to independence. Torn apart from her sister and her children, Celie faces many hardships in life, including an abusive husband.  With support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery, as well as her stand-her-ground stepdaughter, Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood. Jon Poll Jon has cut a wide array of films, from such acclaimed features as Bombshell, The Greatest Showman and 2022's Father of the Bride, to box office hits like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Goldmember, Meet the Parents and its sequel, and Scary Movie 3.  Poll made his feature directorial debut with the comedy drama Charlie Bartlett. Poll and director Jay Roach are frequent collaborators on many projects.  In addition to the Austin Powers sequels, Poll co-produced, edited and directed second unit on Meet the Fockers, executive produced and edited The Campaign, executive produced, edited and directed the title sequence for Dinner for Schmucks, and edited Mystery, Alaska.  Poll also executive produced Judd Apatow's The 40-Year-Old Virgin. His editing credits include the films Forever Young and Death to Smoochy.  Poll directed, edited and co-produced on the HBO series The Brink as well. A graduate of USC's Cinema school with a degree in film production, Poll resides in Los Angeles with Julia, his charming and lovely wife of 400 years. We bring the 2nd Unit back to dip our toes into Development Hell once again...kind of! As a pseudo-sequel of our Superman Lives episodes, we dig into the history of what was supposed to be Justice League: Mortal, the short-lived but fascinating first attempt at the superhero team-up. Directed by George Miller, written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney, and starring a surprisingly young cast including Armie Hammer, Common, and Jay Baruchel, this goofy comic-book-accurate project met insurmountable obstacles on the way to production. We break down the full cast and story of this project (thanks in large part to cast interviews, articles from Collider, and the great work of the Canceled Movie Report podcast), go over a brief history of the Justice League, and explore the biggest reasons for this film's collapse: the Australian government and the 2007-2008 Writers' Guild of America strike. We marvel at the gambit of casting such young actors for such iconic adult roles, give a brief lesson on rabies symptoms, hypothesize future advancements in villainous tracking technology, have a fun discussion on currency conversion rates and tax credits, subject you to some truly awful Batman voices, remind you that Jack is still trying to track down a VHS copy of Nukie to torture Joe with, bring awareness to the pitfalls of bad acronyms/initialisms, Jack plugs his latest creative project, and we ask a question we've been wondering for some time: do the members of the Justice League all share a tailor? Suit up, settle into the Brother Eye console, and enjoy the show. All Bets Are Off with Robby Vegas

This episode was important to me for so many reasons. Tyler Inspires me in my own writing and after this conversation he inspires me more so as a writer and a person. Tyler was hooked at a young age by Elvis Presley so it's no surprise the story behind getting to play Elvis in the Johnny Cash movie "Walk the line" was such an amazing one. We dig into his writing style, the albums he has released over the years and how they are so different and where his musical direction and taste is pointing today. A lot of you may know Tyler for his role in the incredibly popular TV series One Tree Hill as Chris Keller, the arrogant musician and lovable "bad boy" of the show. We talk about how Chris Keller is so different from the real Tyler Hilton and how he could tap into a roll like that. From appearing in Taylor Swift music videos, making films like Charlie Bartlett and Walk the line, and being on arguable one of the most successful TV shows of all time, there is one thing that is perfectly clear. Tyler is, and always will be a song writer first and foremost, his writing is passionate, it runs deep, and comes from a very pure place so ladies and gentlemen.....Tyler Hilton.

June 2019 introduces a new theme geared to take advantage of all those streaming subscriptions that so many people pay for, but maybe don't utilize quite enough. Simply put, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) picked the movies for this month from one of the streaming services (although it seems we just used Amazon Prime) to watch movies that at least one of them had never seen before. There are tons of movies to choose from, but the four listed below are what they landed on. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 1 - Charlie Bartlett (2007) For the first film of the month, Corey chose Charlie Bartlett (2007) which is on Amazon Prime. The film is directed by Jon Poll but stars Anton Yelchin, who is a favorite of both Jonathan and Corey, Robert Downey, Jr., Hope Davis, and Kat Dennings. Charlie (Yelchin) takes it upon himself to become a therapist to his peers while utilizing his wealth to also become a pharmacist putting him at odds with the school's principal (Downey). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Anton Yelchin was a true generational talent, celebrated for his work in such films as JJ Abrams' Star Trek (2009) films, his romantic turn in 2011's Like Crazy, his dramatic early work in 2007's Charlie Bartlett, and his recent 2015 indie horror thriller (which Brock thoroughly enjoyed) Green Room. You can also catch him in the upcoming film Thoroughbreds, in select theaters March 2018. Anton Yelchin was only second-billed in the movie that Brock and Brian watched this week, however, because top billing went to Nicolas Cage. We sat through Nic Cage's 2014 film Dying of the Light, about...CIA stuff. We think. The boys could have really used that orange book over there, that dictionary, for this watch. Or at the very least, some subtitles. But also, Anton Yelchin.

The recent, untimely death of actor Anton Yelchin sent us into his back catalogue. The 2007 high school dramedy, 'Charlie Bartlet' was recommended to us by our special guest, Rankin.  Yelchin plays the titular character, a charismatic teenager whose goal in life is to be liked by everyone.  After getting expelled from private school, the affluent teen finds himself in a brand new public school where he has a long way to go to reach popularity.  Yelchin is confident and charming in the role, and Robert Downey Jr. is entertaining as the befuddled principal.  Today's discussion ranges from an appraisal of high school movie tropes to Yelchin's performance and the overall message of the film. We chatted to Tyler about his new album, Taylor Swift, his memories from his One Tree Hill days, and Extant.   Highlights: - Magicians don't get girls (which is what killed Tyler's dream of a career in magic!) - Running marathons and lactating nightmares - Tyler shares his deep love for root beer floats - Dion Roy calls in and we have an accidental crossover episode - Ross messes up and describes Extant as "a show with Halle Berry and some people" ... - ... and Marcio should have edited that out ;) - Tyler tells us about the audition process and early days of One Tree Hill - Tyler talks about how he ended up starring in a Taylor Swift music video - None of us know who Quincy is... - Extant has been picked up for a second season - sweet!   More: View the full show notes... Manny was stuck at home writing a paper for school and Mike was off doing god knows what with the "ever so party animal" Ben in Tahoe. In this episode we converse about Julia's time at the Flutog in SF last year, crazy things kids say, documentaries/movies such as Mansome, This Film is Not Yet Rated, Butter and Charlie Bartlett. The episode takes a little bit of a serious note and we dabble into our points of view on bullying and how parents deal with it. once again, leave comments/ rate/ share with friends! Thanks Sweeet

Three listeners - Evan, James, and Sarah - join me to discuss the film, Charlie Bartlett. Cast: Tyler Hilton, Anton Yelchin, Hope Davis, Megan Park, Kat Dennings and Robert Downey Jr. Summary: Wealthy teenager Charlie Bartlett (Yelchin) is failing miserably at fitting in at a new public high school run by the world-weary Principal Gardner (Downey, Jr.). As he begins to better understand the social hierarchy, Charlie's honest charm and likability positions him as the resident "psychiatrist" dishing out advice, and the occasional prescription with his partner and fellow student, Murphy Bivens (Hilton), to other students in need. Along the way, he decides to take some of his own advice, find romance, and learn to accept who he is, thus wielding a witty dark comedy about the angst-filled years before college. After a few technical errors and troubles in editing, this week's Rock and Reel episode is a little later than usual. Apologies for that, hopefully there won't be more issues of this nature in the future. That said, this week on Rock and Reel, we've got plenty more music and movie discussion, as usual. We start with a review of the film "Jumper," starring Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson. That's followed by a hypothetical discussion about "Charlie Bartlett," and question exactly how the actual film and cast came together for the project. At the end of all that we also give a brief review of the movie. Then there's some Radiohead talk. The band has set the first leg of its North American tour, but the second half of the North American dates are currently not announced, save for a couple dates. We talk about the potential for other spots the band will visit, including whether or not they will be doing Lollapalooza or not (note: this discussion took place before sources suggested the band would more than likely be playing Lollapalooza). After that Kevin introduces his new segment called "Kevin's Horror Corner," where he talks about some "classic" (in some senses) scary movies. This week, it's the historically great film "Basket Case," about two formerly-conjoined brothers who kill people...but one of them is actually so tiny he lives inside a basket. Yes, it's that good. Finally, this week's album pick is Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks with their record "Real Emotional Trash." You can hear the 6+ minute track "Baltimore" as part of this here podcast.More to come next week, including reviews of "Be Kind Rewind," "Semi-Pro," and a sneak peek of "Run, Fat Boy, Run." Plus talk about the new Be Your Own Pet album "Get Awkward" along with the new Nine Inch Nails instrumental experiment "Ghosts I-IV."
