We are fortunate to have Producer, Winnie Cheung and actress, Celia Au on the show to discuss their short film, Last Call which premiered at the 2025 SXSW Midnight Short Program. This short fantasy thriller takes you on the psychological journey of a traumatized motorcyclist who daydreams about a sultry serpent woman and is haunted by her enchanting voice.  Winnie's credits include being a co-producer on the SXSW Audience Award Winner “Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror” in 2021, and has won several awards at Sundance and more. Inspired by David Cronenberg's body horror, American erotic thrillers, and Eastern fantasy films - LAST CALL reflects Winnie's diasporic identity - a dreamlike blend of the ancestral East, and the rebellious West. Celia Au who previously starred in Wu Assassins and Lodge 49, brings Winnie's vision to life in this story's discovery of profound revelation.  We talk about: Integrating and displaying complex emotions in film Ways to deal with internal conflicts How Breath work, mental visualization, and Active Listening are key to facilitating a productive and safe work environment Storytelling as a powerful way to positively change the world. Our Primordial Past: Folk Horror in Penda's Fen (1974) & La Llorona (2019)

October has arrived and as we are wont to do here at The Politics of Cinema, we are diving into an approiate theme within the horror genre to celebrate. In the past we've looked at; Fascism in Green Room (2015), Humans Hunting Humans, Art House Horror, and the career of George Romero. This year we are heading into the thick of the woods to explore Folk Horror.  We discuss a few classics of the genre, such as Witchfinder General (1968), The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), The Wicker Man (1973), and Ganja & Hess (1973). We also connect the themes in those early films to those explored in modern folk horror like The Witch (2015), It Follows (2014), Hereditary (2018), and Midsommar (2019)—before Isaac reins us in so we don't include every single horror film in this genre. Our main focus is also on one classic and one modern example: Penda's Fen (1974) and La Llorona (2019). These two striking examples of folk horror delve into the complexities of identity, history, and the landscapes that shape us. In Penda's Fen, we find a pagan anarchist manifesto within a coming-of-age story set in rural 1970s England. With La Llorona, we see how the ghosts of the past exact revenge on the Guatemalan General who orchestrated an Indigenous genocide. Both films yield surprisingly upbeat results within their narratives—at least to us. If folk horror piques your interest, we would also highly recommend watching Keir-La Janisse's documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021). Night of the Eagle aka Burn, Witch, Burn (1962), Eyes of Fire (1983), Pyewacket (2017) Welcome to Episode 48, where we discuss one of the oldest perceived monsters in our history . . . witches. But as we know, in film there are many different types of witches, therefore a lot of different types of witch movies. In some, the craft is done for good, while others lean to the darker side, maybe for a personal gain. And then there are those that are just plan evil. Either way, this is a genre monster that's not only one of the oldest, it has also crossed into many other genres, from romance, fantasy, comedy and others. But it doesn't take away the power behind the sub-genre. So sit down and make sure you have your favorite lucky charm with you, light a candle, or whatever you need to do for protection, as we delve into 3 witchy titles. Movies Mentioned During This Episode: The Abyss (1989), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), City of the Dead aka Horror Hotel (1960), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Eyes of Fire (1983), Haxen (1922), Hereditary (2018), Night of the Demon (1957), Night of the Eagle aka Burn, Witch, Burn (1962), Pyewacket (2017), Weird Woman (1944), Witchfinder General (1968), Wicker Man (1973), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021)

In our latest episode, we unravel the layered world of ‘Men,' a British folk horror film by Alex Garland, that sees a widowed woman, portrayed by Jessie Buckley, on “vacation” in a countryside village, tormented by the eerie men in the village, all brought to life by Rory Kinnear. We unpack Garland's layered narrative, drawing links to ancient cautionary tales, while also exploring the film's religious undertones and symbolism. ‘Men' is a film that invites and defies consensus in equal measure, a trait reflected in our own verdicts. Ryan wasn't very enamored, though conceded to a ‘rent' due to the film's originality and enough intriguing elements. Tim however absolutely loved ‘Men', awarding it an enthusiastic ‘buy.' Are you ready to hear some men talk about ‘Men'? Tune in to our episode and let's dissect this folk horror enigma together! Tracks like ‘Floating in Nothing' and ‘Violent Mechanix' feature both intensely catchy hooks and hammering brutal noise. ‘Sold Me Sad' is a quietly deranged lullaby that takes an atmospheric turn. The throbbing drug-addled lurch of the Manson / Reznor-esque ‘Incubate' is, at the end of the album, treated to a completely re-imagined and extended club-style remix by scene legend Justin K. Broadrick (Godflesh, Zonal, etc). For all its harsher, scraping atmospheres and pummeling aggression ‘Body Prophecy' always remains an eminently tight, memorable album molded for the stage and constructed to keep bodies in motion and listeners transfixed. Topics Discussed In This Episode: How The Kybalion impacted James's life/creative practice Hermeticism and the 7 Hermetic principles Folklore behind “Ring Around The Rosie” Draxler's visual contribution to Black Magnet's newest album “Body Prophecy” Recording “Body Prophecy” during the early stages of the pandemic James working with Justin K Broadrick Suffering through challenging material to grow one's creative perspective Looking past genres to develop a deeper relationship with artworks Tapping into your highest vibration, frequency, and energy Creating art with absolute honesty Embracing the paradox Transforming negative outlooks into positive perspectives “The Pregnant Void” in Taoism Artists / People Mentioned: Salvador Dalí (Surrealist Painter) Francis Bacon (Painter) Max Ernst (Surrealist Painter) Mitch Horowitz (Author / Occult Historian) Jay Cheel (Director) Andrei Tarkovsky (Director) Alejandro Jodorosky (Director) David Lynch (Director) Alan Watts (Writer) Bands / Musicians Mentioned: Justin K. Return of the Past: Folk Horror & The Wicker Man (2006) On this week's second episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim jump to the 2006 American remake of Robin Hardy's Classic, The Wicker Man. Remakes can go a lot of different ways and this one doesn't surprise. What's great is the two films (original and 2006) lead us to a fascinating documentary from 2021, Kier-La Janisse's Woodland Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, a wonderful examination of the Folk Horror genre from Great Britain through Eastern Europe, Mexico, Central & South America, and Asia. It's a true testament to the beauty of cross-cultural understanding. Take a listen . . . it's a good, fun talk. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

This week we're so incredibly thrilled to chat with writer, director, festival programmer, The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies and otherwise multi-hyphenate Kier-La Janisse! Her debut feature as a director, the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, premiered last year at SXSW and is currently on Shudder. Her book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films is celebrating its 10 year anniversary with a newly updated edition that's available through Fab Press as a signed copy with a bonus CD right now and will also be available through regular bookstores starting tomorrow! We chat about her relationship to horror, her introduction to the genre as well as her writing and the Miskatonic Institute before digging into the Goldie Hawn/Chevy Chase film Foul Play. And while this is one of those nontraditional choices, her Scarred for Life story is one for the ages. We use that as a jumping off point to discuss the wild film. We're focusing specifically on the revived figure of the truly frightening witch that is central to Robert Eggers' The Witch (2015) as well as the directorial debut of Goran Stolevski, You Won't Be Alone, which is currently playing in theaters.  These brilliant witch films are part of the "folk horror revival" of the past decade. Join us as we explore that cinematic context as well, covered in detail in the 2021 documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror.

Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon started at the movies with the new Scream (Theaters), which she entered with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. She next watched the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (Shudder), which she enjoyed, but it was right in her wheelhouse. Next, she watched Beanie Mania (HBO), a documentary about the beanie baby bubble that mostly reminded her of the time period. The Dragon watched a few shows: she started with the newest season of Ted Lasso (Apple TV+), which she is enjoying. Next, she's halfway through the new season of Cheer (Netflix), which is great, and finally has been rewatching her comfort show Hannibal (Hulu) for the third time.   Berto on the Bed: Berto started by watching Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeywoman (Netflix), which he found laughably bad. Next, Berto watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) (Prime) and the sequel: Out Of The Shadows (Paramount +), he thought it was exactly what it should have been silly, but he didn't like the action in it. Next, he watched The Puppet Master: Hunting the Ultimate Conman (Netflix), about a British conman who spent years convincing people he was an MI6 agent. Next, Berto talked quickly about a few movies he had seen: Jakob's Wife (Shudder), which he thought was an interesting take on the vampire story; The Bad Batch (Netflix), a bad slow movie he didn't like; Ghost Ship (Tubi), a typical 2000's horror movie that is passable. Finally, he watched JCVD (Tubi), which he thought showed some of Jean-Claude Van Damme's acting ability but was a bad and slow film.   This week's deep dive is 2012 horror film Excision, currently streaming on Tubi & Amazon Prime.

This week we ask the musical question: Why would you make that? Blending together Star Wars and anime on Star Wars Visions on Disney+ is actually the least crazy thing this week. And there are certainly some weird gems in Les's rundown of Fantastic Fest. 3:11-20:40 TV Diary 20:40-25:55 Truth is Stranger Than Fan-Fiction 25:55-35:48 Star Wars Visions (Disney+) 36:12-42:30 Fantastic Fest (Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, Cannon Arm and the Arcade Quest, Found Footage Phenomenon, Let The Wrong One In) 42:30-52:28 Ordinary Joe (HULU) 52:28-58:00 Fantastic Fest (The Beta Test, Bingo Hell, Exorcism of God, Ike Boys, Lamb, Mother Schmuckers) 58:00-1:04:32 Squid Game (NETFLIX) 1:04:32-1:16:26 Fantastic Fest (This is Gwar, The Trip, Baby Assassins, Eyes of Fire, There's Someone Inside Your House, V/H/S/94, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, Sweetie You Won't Believe It) 1:16:26- Double Dessert: What If?/Ted Lasso
