S4 Ep5: Ecofeminism 1: A Powerful Vision (Lavinia Steinfort in Conversation with Dr. Vandana Shiva)

State of Power

In 1973, a group of women from Mandal village in the Himalayas in India “hugged” trees to prevent them from being felled.  When the loggers came, the women, led by Gaura Devi, surrounded the trees and chanted: “This forest is our mother's home; we will protect it with all our might”. This was the beginning of what came to be known as the Chipko movement, which put a spotlight on ecofeminism.  Consequently, when many people hear the term ecofeminism, it is the image of those women hugging the  trees and fighting to save the forest that comes to mind. But what exactly is ecofeminism  and how and why is it such a powerful vision that may actually save our planet?  Ecofeminism is a cross-cutting, multi-faceted, perspective that encompasses many issues, including food, climate and energy. It offers an alternative to the oppressive patriarchal capitalist system that has had devastating impacts on the planet and on human lives and livelihoods. Ecofeminist analysis explores the connections between women and nature in culture, economy, religion, politics, literature and iconography, and addresses the parallels between the oppression of nature and the oppression of women. It challenges the artificial division between the personal and the political, and the environmental or ecological. It seeks to show that “social justice, interspecies ethics, and environmental concerns” cannot be approached as separate issues. Moreover, a growing number of ecofeminists approach gender as a social construct, challenging the men-women binary and rejecting the idea that women are somehow closer to nature,  as this is part of the patriarchal frame that subjects both “women” and “nature” to exploitation.  Our guest on today's podcast is a well-known ecofeminist, who is very well placed to deepen our understanding of ecofeminism, especially as it relates to our food system, and our relation with the land and with the environment. Dr Vandana Shiva is the founder of the research foundation for science, technology and ecology. She is also the founder of Navdanya a grassroots movement which promotes biodiversity conservation, biodiversity, organic farming, the rights of farmers, and the process of seed saving. Amongst the many books she has written, she co-wrote a book called Ecofeminism, written together with Maria Mies.  She is here in conversation with Lavinia Steinfort, a political geographer and ecofeminist activist. Lavinia is a researcher at the Transnational Institute (TNI), where she is working on public alternatives such as (re)municipalisation of public services, a just transition towards energy democracy and transforming finance for the 99%. A Maori perspective on negotiating. Keep our shared future front of mind. As people at the top flounder, local climate solutions can be found in farming, flood preparedness and at high level negotiations where indigenous perspectives are sidelined or misunderstood. It's urgent that we let local people and First Nations protectors lead the way in climate adaptation.  Vandana Shiva knew this when she paid attention to the Chipko women in India hugging trees to preserve forests. She listened again when village women gave her their diverse seeds to preserve resilience against the monoculture "seeds of suicide" from Monsanto.   George Woods knows this after decades campaigning against fossil fuels in the coal and gas regions of Australia. She says the social capital built up for example in the battles for Bentley, Bylong and Gloucester have created a love and solidarity that is now being tested by historic floods. Her poem voicing the flooding emotions we feel about coal's ongoing dominance  is in the  anthology - The Tide will Take it.:  https://puncherandwattmann.com/product/the-tide-will-take-it/(link is external)   Tack Daniels  in N.Z. knows this from a lifetime of high level negotiations. He talks to Amelia who was a youth delegate to COP26. His Maori perspective insists that indigenous people must retain control of their knowledge. He is confident that non-indigenous people can  learn a lot about power sharing and keeping the focus on our shared future.

Her poem voicing the flooding emotions we feel about coal's ongoing dominance  is in the  anthology - The Tide will Take it.:  https://puncherandwattmann.com/product/the-tide-will-take-it/   Tack Daniels  in N.Z. knows this from a lifetime of high level negotiations. He talks to Amelia who was a youth delegate to COP26. His Maori perspective insists that indigenous people must retain control of their knowledge. He is confident that non-indigenous people can  learn a lot about power sharing and keeping the focus on our shared future.  ACTIONTo help flood affected people in the Lismore area of NSW 1. Lismore City Council - Flood Appeal Account - these donations are for the purpose of disaster recovery and community support and will be distributed to other organisations or persons for those organisations to use and distribute as needed. BSB: 062 565 Account: 10864633   2. RED CROSS FLOOD APPEAL – The Red Cross is committed to supporting the community through the next two years as we recover and rebuild. https://www.redcross.org.au/floodsappeal/   3. GIVIT – This platform specifically matches the need with the items being donated. It is recommended by Resilience NSW. https://www.givit.org.au/   4. Koori Mail has released a Go-Fund-Me for the Bundjalung communities and missions that have been effected by the recent floods. Please follow link for more details. On May 21, 2021, an influential environmental activist died of Covid-19 and you probably didn't hear about it. Sunderlal Bahuguna's passing didn't make the major news outlets in the US, but it was a big deal in India, where he was the renowned leader of the Chipko movement against deforestation in the 1970s. Chipko is a Hindi word for “hugging”, but according to Bahuguna, he was just the messenger of the movement. “It was the ladies who hugged the trees,” he said. This story is about the life and legacy of Sunderlal Bahuguna, and the tree huggers that saved India's forests.Featuring: Haritima Bahuguna SUPPORTOutside/In is made possible with listener support. Radha Bhatt is a veteran of ‘Chipko' and other nonviolent struggles for social and economic justice. In this conversation she recalls how she first learnt nonviolence from her mother's capacity for empathy with the suffering of an animal. Even though much of human intelligence is, at present, expended on violence – Radhabehn is confident that human beings are destined to become nonviolent. Her confidence is based on the observation that even in our inter-personal relations, it is self-restraint, patience and resilience that makes for enriching relationships. By contrast, being in a hurry to quickly get outcomes as per your own wishes, which is a form of violence, tends to make our relationships deteriorate.

The 1970s were a time of rapid development in the Indian Himalayas. New roads had recently been built, allowing logging companies greater access to the region's vast, remote forests. Local people made a subsistence livelihood from these woods, and when the trees were cut down they endured erosion, poor farming conditions and catastrophic floods. A resistance movement was formed, named Chipko – Hindi for ‘hugging' – after its trademark protest tactic of embracing the trees. Many of its first organisers were women. Environmentalist and ecological activist, Dr Vandana Shiva was a young student when she first learnt about Chipko. She tells Viv Jones how she was inspired to volunteer for the movement.

The Himalayan forests determine the well-being of India’s Northern Plains. Scholar, traveller, and activist Shekhar Pathak’s important book The Chipko Movement: A People’s History has been rendered in English by translator and publisher Manisha Chaudhry. It tells the story of how local communities in Kumaon and Garhwal, especially the women, resisted forest felling by loggers. Relying on extensive research and primary sources, it documents the antecedents, the inspiration and the impact of this transformative movement in its grassroots context. Edited and with an introduction by historian and public intellectual Ramachandra Guha, the narrative also bears witness to the deep friendship and understanding between Pathak and Guha, two men who share so little and so much. In a deep and insightful discussion, they speak with writer and academic Mukul Sharma about the book and its backstories.

We love listener mail! You've sent us some amazing notes. Some made us laugh, some made us cry, and some made us say—hey, that’s a great question! We should answer it. So that’s what we did. This week, we dig into some of your questions about trees. What’s up with that tree-planting search engine? Who were the original tree-huggers? And we top it off with some answers to your questions about our episode on nuclear power. Want more tree content? Listen to our episode 20 Million Trees. Calls to Action Plant a tree! Find the right kind of tree for where you live on the National Wildlife Federation’s Native Plant Finder, and learn how to plant it and take care of it here. This is a story about hugging trees. About the women who inspired the iconic environmental Chipko movement in India, which literally means to hug, and it’s a story about the Bishnoi faith and the women leaders from that small spiritual minority in the Himalayan foothills, the ones who triumphed, and the ones who were murdered protecting the ancient trees that hold back the all-consuming desert and keep the mountains up. This is the story of Amrita Devi, and Gaura Devi, who lived and fought for trees 300 years apart in the Marwar desert region of western Rajasthan.

Ramachandra (Ram) Guha is a world-class historian, biographer, journalist, and public intellectual who writes and comments on culture, history, politics, current affairs, and social movements. Among his most well-known works is a comprehensive (and many view as definitive) two-volume biography of Gandhi. The first volume, Gandhi Before India (Knopf, 2014), was chosen a notable book of the year by The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. The second volume, Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World (Knopf, 2018), was similarly recognized by The New York Times and The Economist.  His earlier work on Gandhi's legacy, India after Gandhi (Macmillan/Ecco Press, 2007; revised edition, 2017), was selected a book of the year by The Economist, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, and a book of the decade in the Times of London. The US magazine Foreign Policy named Guha as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world in May 2008.  He received the Padma Bhushan for 2009, India's third highest civilian award. In the 1980s, trained as an economist, Ram studied the social history of forestry in Uttarakhand, focusing on the Chipko movement. He was deeply moved by leaders of the movement, who practiced Gandhian philosophy. In comparison to certain dogmatic Marxist views that were popular in parts of India at the time, Ram saw Gandhian philosophy as a healthier alternative. Ram did research on a variety of topics before focusing on Gandhi. “It just emerged over these twenty years of researching other subjects that Gandhi was with me everywhere,” he says to an audience at Yale University. “And I finally decided I must settle accounts with him.” When writing the biography of Gandhi, Ram meticulously combed through millions of pages of archives that went much beyond the 100-volume Collected Works written by Gandhi, whose prolific, public career extended over 50 years across three continents. In search of traces of Gandhi, Ram took numerous trips to South Africa, Israel, UK, US, and various places in India, spending long days (if not months) in cold, grey archive buildings, tracking down Gandhi’s family, friends, colleagues, and rivalries, and deciphering thousands of handwritten letters and manuscripts that were never made public before. (Here is Ram’s reflection on his adventure and fascinating discoveries) His earlier books include a pioneering environmental history, The Unquiet Woods (University of California Press, 1989), and an award-winning social history of cricket, A Corner of a Foreign Field (Picador, 2002), which was chosen by The Guardian as one of the ten best books on cricket ever written. Ram also writes for The Telegraph, the Hindustan Times, and The Indian Express. His large body of work, covering a wide range of fields and yielding a number of rational insights, has made him a significant figure in Indian historical studies, and Guha is valued as one of the major historians of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The American Historical Association (AHA) in 2019 conferred on him its Honorary Foreign Member prize; he is the third Indian historian to be recognized by the association. Between 1985 and 2000, Ram taught at various universities in India, Europe and North America, including the University of California-Berkeley, Yale University, Stanford University and at Oslo University (Arne Naess chair, 2008), and later at the Indian Institute of Science. During this period, he was also a fellow of Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin in Germany (1994–95). Guha then moved to Bangalore, and began writing full-time. He served as Sundaraja Visiting Professor in the Humanities at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 2003. He is managing trustee of the New India Foundation, a nonprofit body that funds research on modern Indian history.  Guha was appointed the Philippe Roman Chair of International Affairs and History at the London School of Economics for 2011–12, succeeding Niall Ferguson. He has been a frequent commentator in global publications on the current state of India’s democracy, and a critic of the agendas of the current Prime Minister of India and his political party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has also recognized the perils historians face, cautioning that when practicing their craft, historians must not be vulnerable to the chauvinism of their discipline, or of method, identity and ideology. "A historian has beliefs and prejudices, which, like his or her personal identity, cannot ever be entirely suppressed. But one must continually be aware of them, and seek to limit their influence on one’s work," he has written. Guha’s father worked at the Forest Research Institute, and his mother was a high-school teacher.  He grew up in Dehradun, India, on the Forest Research Institute campus.  He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, in 1977, and completed his master's in economics from the Delhi School of Economics. He then enrolled at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, where he did a fellowship program (equivalent to a PhD) on the social history of forestry in Uttarakhand, focusing on the Chipko movement. It was later published as The Unquiet Woods.  In 2014, Guha was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities by Yale University. Ram is based in Bangalore, India. He is married to the graphic designer Sujata Keshavan and has two children. Join us in conversation with this gifted historian and important commentator!

This episode of La Poudre was originally recorded in English. To listen to the undubbed version, click here. C'est la que j'ai enregistré « We are not afraid of Donald Trump » du générique. This gave birth to the episode « La Marche », published on the 8th of March 2017. That's where I recorded the « We are not afraid of Donald Trump » that you can hear in the opening credits. I can't believe it's been three years already. It was the spark, the starting point of the feminist revolution we are living today. On that day, half a million women were on the streets in Washington. And on that day, I met one woman : Ashley McCray. This encounter was crucial for me. Thanks to her, I understood that patriarchy, colonialism and capitalism are three sides of the same system.Episode summary:Vandana Shiva has been leading both environmentalist and feminist fights for more than fifty years accross the globe. Despite this long-term endeavor, she is also one of the few carrying the idea of necessary hope in her speeches and writings (02:45). She sees hope as essential to avoid defeatism: we need to fight fatalism and use all the remaining time to act instead of running away and abandoning the planet (03:29). Born on the 5th of November 1952 in Dehradun (India), she studied physics and science philosophy, in both India and Canada. After fighting against gigantic dams construction, or taking part in the Chipko movement for forest preservation in India, she has been working towards peasants' autonomy in their use of seeds by taking a stance against seed patenting (13:17). She warns us about keeping in perspective the various “technological advances” (11:11) which have to remain mere tools which can be challenged and reassessed. When they cannot be called into question, or their reevaluation is made impossible by paternalist discourses, it reveals the neocolonialist methods of the food-processing industry she condemns relentlessly. If Vandana Shiva has been fighting for the environment, she has also taken part in feminist battles, establihsing the profound link between the two. She has indeed received the Alternative Nobel Prize in 1993 for her activism in these intertwined issues. She reminds and honors the value of “womanly” knowledge regarding care and sense of community to help guide us in the much needed transition (22:26). To reach this goal, she also reminds us of the power of civil disobedience, an activist tool used nowadays by Extinction Rebellion among others (33:24). As for Vandana Shiva, she does not give up and keeps on inspiring ecofeminist activists around the world.Executive Producer : Nouvelles Écoutes Production and signature tune : Aurore Meyer-MahieuProduction assistant : Gaïa Marty Editing and mixing : Marion Emerit

Maintenant, vous savez
Qu'est-ce que l'écoféminisme ?

Maintenant, vous savez

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2019 2:49

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A bon entendeur!
