#211: On a recent trip to Biofach 2025 in Germany, Linley Dixon visits with former IFOAM (International Federation of Agriculture Movements) president Bernward Geier to discuss ways to maintain organic integrity around the globe amid growing industrial pressures. Market forces, political influences, and variances in integrity among certifiers are all contributing to the growing differences between the EU and US organic labeling systems, with the EU growing their acreage planted in Organic and corresponding labeling programs, and the US importing the majority of their offerings on the shelf while keeping their farmland dedicated to chemical agriculture. Whether you're an organic farmer, industry insider, or eco-conscious eater, this episode offers a deep dive into the critical issues defining the future of sustainable food production worldwide. Bernward Geier  is the former director of IFOAM (The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements), a role which he held for 18 years.  He is the current director of COLABORA - Let's Work Together,  a nonprofit focused on bridging the overlap in sustainability movements between agricultural and ecological organizations. Bernward serves as a board member for Vandana Shiva's organization Navdanya, and is also a celebrated author, filmmaker, and speaker. To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://realorganicproject.org/bernward-geier-doing-right-in-wrong-systemThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

State of Power
S4 Ep5: Ecofeminism 1: A Powerful Vision (Lavinia Steinfort in Conversation with Dr. Vandana Shiva)

State of Power

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2023 36:37

In 1973, a group of women from Mandal village in the Himalayas in India “hugged” trees to prevent them from being felled.  When the loggers came, the women, led by Gaura Devi, surrounded the trees and chanted: “This forest is our mother's home; we will protect it with all our might”. This was the beginning of what came to be known as the Chipko movement, which put a spotlight on ecofeminism.  Consequently, when many people hear the term ecofeminism, it is the image of those women hugging the  trees and fighting to save the forest that comes to mind. But what exactly is ecofeminism  and how and why is it such a powerful vision that may actually save our planet?  Ecofeminism is a cross-cutting, multi-faceted, perspective that encompasses many issues, including food, climate and energy. It offers an alternative to the oppressive patriarchal capitalist system that has had devastating impacts on the planet and on human lives and livelihoods. Ecofeminist analysis explores the connections between women and nature in culture, economy, religion, politics, literature and iconography, and addresses the parallels between the oppression of nature and the oppression of women. It challenges the artificial division between the personal and the political, and the environmental or ecological. It seeks to show that “social justice, interspecies ethics, and environmental concerns” cannot be approached as separate issues. Moreover, a growing number of ecofeminists approach gender as a social construct, challenging the men-women binary and rejecting the idea that women are somehow closer to nature,  as this is part of the patriarchal frame that subjects both “women” and “nature” to exploitation.  Our guest on today's podcast is a well-known ecofeminist, who is very well placed to deepen our understanding of ecofeminism, especially as it relates to our food system, and our relation with the land and with the environment. Dr Vandana Shiva is the founder of the research foundation for science, technology and ecology. She is also the founder of Navdanya a grassroots movement which promotes biodiversity conservation, biodiversity, organic farming, the rights of farmers, and the process of seed saving. Amongst the many books she has written, she co-wrote a book called Ecofeminism, written together with Maria Mies.  She is here in conversation with Lavinia Steinfort, a political geographer and ecofeminist activist. Lavinia is a researcher at the Transnational Institute (TNI), where she is working on public alternatives such as (re)municipalisation of public services, a just transition towards energy democracy and transforming finance for the 99%.

In this episode centered around global consciousness and rooted local action, returning guest Dr. Vandana Shiva reminds us of the power of commitment in the fight for the Earth. Reflecting on her lifetime of devotion to the land, Vandana highlights the value of paying deep attention and of bearing witness to the interconnectedness of Earth. These thoughts deeply counter the modern state of media and movements that fleetingly follow trends without deep connections to justice and connection. Together, Vandana and Ayana piece apart the threads of our culture that lead to exploitation and extraction - focusing on the policies of division and distraction that keep us from each other. As Vandana states, “Earth is alive and her expressions are diverse.” We are all anchored to each other and to the earth. The divisions that we focus so much time on are created in order to dominate and exploit the nature on which the earthly community depends. Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned environmental thinker and activist, a leader in the International Forum on Globalization, and of the Slow Food Movement. She is also the Director of Navdanya and of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, and a tireless crusader for farmers', peasants', and women's rights. Agroecology applies ecological principles to agriculture, and it's a key strategy for mitigating--and adapting to climate change--which also boosts biodiversity and food security--and it is the focus of a special series at Mongabay. Joining us first to discuss agroecology as a science, a practice, and a movement is Dr. Maywa Montenegro, an assistant professor of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Then host Mike G. speaks with iconic Indian scientist, activist and Right Livelihood Award winner Dr. Vandana Shiva, whose brand new book, Agroecology and Regenerative Agriculture: Sustainable Solutions for Hunger, Poverty, and Climate Change, synthesizes decades of agroecology research and implementation. She's also the founder of Navdanya, which is both an agroecology center and a global food sovereignty movement. Dr. Shiva shares how agroecology is an effective solution not just to climate change but also for a host of other ecological crises we're facing, such as water scarcity, land degradation, nutrition and biodiversity loss. Further reading: • ”From traditional practice to top climate solution, agroecology gets growing attention” by Anna Lappé  • "Transitioning to sustainable agriculture requires growing and sustaining an ecologically skilled workforce," Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 96. doi:10.3389/fsufs.2019.00096 Episode artwork: Dr. Vandana Shiva, photo by Kartikey Shiva. For The Wild

In this episode of For the Wild, Ayana and returning guest Dr. Vandana Shiva discuss the crumbling of the colonial paradigm and the promise of re-commoning the commons for our collective future. Situating us in the exigency of food and seed sovereignty for our present time, Dr. Shiva reminds us that seeds and living systems are not open access systems to be privatized, patented, or exploited. Rather, the commons are central to all of life. In this multifaceted episode, we discuss threats to the commons by Big Tech; the brilliance and sophistication of Indigenous seed cultures and breeding, the toxicity of GMO crops for our bodies and the planet, the benefits of agroecological farming, and the need for diversity in our ecosystems and justice movements. Tying the green-washed quest by tech barons to digitalize the world to legacies of colonialism and imperialism under a similar “civilizing” mission, Dr. Shiva warns that the ruling class operates from a place of fear of any being alive and free on their own terms. We end this conversation with a call to a paradigm shift away from capitalism, control and fear to one of partnership with the earth. Vandana Shiva is a world-renowned environmental thinker and activist, a leader in the International Forum on Globalisation and of the Slow Food Movement. Founder of Navdanya and of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, and a tireless crusader for farmers', peasants', and women's rights, she is author and editor of many influential books, including two from Synergetic Press, Reclaiming the Commons: Biodiversity, Indigenous Wisdom, and the Rights of Mother Earth (2020) and the forthcoming Philanthrocapitalism and the Erosion of Democracy: A Global Citizens' Report on the Corporate Control of Technology, Health, and Agriculture, which is slated for release in February 2022. Music by Peals, Peia, and Kaivalya. Visit our website at forthewild.world for the full episode description, references, and action points.

Industrijska hrana pospešuje podnebne spremembe, povzroča bolezni in prispeva k njihovemu širjenju, zato v gibanju Navdanya hrano pridelujejo ekološko in skrbijo za regeneracijo zemlje, vode in biodiverziteto. V več kot 150 skupnostnih bankah semen ohranjajo bogato naravno dediščino in raznovrstnost.

The 1% are destroying the Earth and convincing us it's good for us. And Vandana Shiva has an answer: "Not on our watch." We speak to the globally respected and award-winning activist, author, scientist, speaker, and protector of life about the crucial crossroads we are standing at in 2022. Vandana teaches us how to see through the false narratives of the 1% so that corporate influence no longer controls us. By harnessing the power of community, diversity, solidarity, and creative vision we can build a global movement to protect the rights of all living beings and the Earth. A new paradigm of an Earth democracy where people and planet thrive together for generations to come.SUPPORT Dr. Vandana Shiva and the Navdanya Foundation: Learn more , donate, and get involved at navdanya.org. Follow Dr. Shiva and Navdanya on Instagram.CHALLENGE: Dig deeper into the story and ideas of a leader you are inspired by. Read their books, get to know them beyond the soundbites we all hear in history books or the media. Think about how their ideas are relevant for your life and how you might take action that aligns with those ideas. TAKEAWAYS: 1: Colonization still continues on a global scale. Will we allow it? 2: We are standing at a crossroads which won't last much longer. It's time to choose the world we want and build it. 3: There is a solution. It's time to evolve political democracy into an Earth democracy, where the rights of all life are respected and protected.Visit www.wecanremaketheworld.com for more info and resources.

COVID, capitalism, climate: the way forward

In the sixth and final episode of the Courage My Friends podcast special series, we welcome eco-feminist, scientist, author and celebrated global climate justice leader, Dr. Vandana Shiva. Our discussion takes us beyond borders to the global realties of this pandemic -- a pandemic that is most acutely felt by low-income nations who must contend with deep legacies of poverty amid the callous disregard of a global economic system that continues to leave the south behind. According to Shiva: "We need to see the multiple pandemics right now. The pandemic of COVID. But there's a pandemic of hunger. There's a pandemic of unemployment and shutting down of small local businesses. There's a pandemic of heartlessness and fear." Where "these new diseases are really a result of invasions into forests," the stage had long been set for (and what many are now describing as) the age of pandemics -- COVID-19 being its most recent and opportunistic arrival. Bats and pangolins aside, the disastrous impacts, accompanying crises and worrying predictions of the current pandemic are the result of distinctly human-made systems. Systems firmly rooted within what Shiva sees as the death spiral of modern capitalism.  "I talk about this as an anti-life ideology that has been kept in place by force for over 500 years. And now at the time where the pandemic should be making us put life and care and mutuality and cooperation at center stage, that's precisely the time where this anti-life philosophy is being put on fast-forward." For the world's marginalized, especially those in the global south, this is part of the ongoing legacy of conquest and colonialism. "You know, I've never found a day when capitalism was born. I have found a process in which it was crafted. And that process is colonialism. Basically creating a civilizing mission. Giving yourself the right to invade other countries. And then declaring the land, the wealth, the economies as yours. And collecting rents and revenues from it." From structural violence -- fomented through centuries of conquest and colonization, decades of exploitative structural adjustment, debt, climate destruction and continuing plunder by the global north, its corporations and "philanthro-imperialist" billionaires, to the current vaccine apartheid, Shiva speaks to how the Global South stands at the forefront of the converging crises of COVID, Capitalism and Climate. "First you spread, in irresponsible ways, these new pandemics, because of a globalized neoliberal limitless greed system. And then you deny people treatment. This is what's happening right now. And, you know, instead of governments being able to take care of their national health systems, they're having to fight patent battles at WTO." Established in the early 90s by the Dunkel Draft, the World Trade Organization (WTO) together with the IMF and World Bank, now set the rules for global trade. Regularly finding in favour of global north economies and multinationals -- often involving the exploitation of global south markets, resources and labour -- the WTO as Shiva sees it is nothing less than, "an organization created for recolonization." As southern fields continue to feed northern appetites for 21st century cash crops, i.e. GMO (genetically modified) Soya and BT (pest-resistant) cotton; local farmers contend with hunger, poverty, desperation, and the collapse of local agricultural economies begun by the Green Revolution decades ago. The genetic material (plant, animal, mineral) of the global south and traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples the world over continue to be stolen, misappropriated and commercialized through the biopiracy of patent and Intellectual Property systems, allowing multinationals to own the very building blocks of life -- from seed to animal to water and alas to vaccines. As Shiva says, "The race for vaccines started even before the vaccines were there." And where the ensuing vaccine apartheid leaves India, the world's largest democracy gasping for breath and Africa, the cradle of humanity, at a less than one per cent vaccination rate, for Shiva this deserves nothing less than the strongest condemnation. "The big debate in WTO right now, the whole issue of patents on vaccines and denying people the right to survive is... writing their death-knell…This to me is genocide," she said. The economic orthodoxy of neoliberalism, placing the private over the public, profit over people, the corporate over the commons and industry over environment, does indeed feel like a reprise of colonialism -- but with a twist: "First of all, colonialism was about commerce. But commerce by force, commerce with military might. And commerce with a letter patent -- you know, it was a patent in involved! Columbus was given a letter patent, which according to the King and Queen, they had the power to do this from the Pope who got it from God directly. And the difference between that colonization and this colonization is the billionaires are the gods. The billionaires are the Popes -- they write the religions. The billionaires are the Kings and the Queens. They rule the world." Those billionaires who are also prolific names in charity and global "problem-solving," for Shiva, they are merely philanthro-imperialists, pretending "to be giving when they're actually grabbing." As she speaks to us surrounded by sickness and death (of what will eventually manifest as the Delta variant around the world), for Shiva, this moment reveals the true and horrifying face of colonial capitalism and its legacy, "in the virus of greed combined with a virus of impunity and of indifference." However, where she is also witness to farmers fighting for food sovereignty, Sikh langars offering food and oxygen to those in need and global south nations and their allies coming together to challenge patent monopolies held by multinationals, this also becomes a moment of hope. A hope borne of solidarity and resistance: "We need a new solidarity with the Earth. We need a new solidarity with Indigenous people. And most importantly...a leadership of Indigenous cultures. The leadership of women. The leadership of working people to bring us out of these multiple crises, which have only one outcome - extinction of humanity and collapse of ecosystems." In this age of borderless pandemics, climate destruction and global capitalism, is this a time of reckoning, redress and decolonization of the very systems that brought us to this point? Where the well-being of one is intertwined with the well-being of all, can we finally engage in a meaningful solidarity within and between nations? Can we begin to build regenerative and circular economies that protect the planet and all of its peoples? Where Shiva long ago decided that she could "take on the empire with a little seed," what possibilities lie within a global solidarity movement intent on growing "gardens of hope?" Host and co-producer Resh Budhu begins the conversation with a focus on India during the onset of the deadly 2nd wave of Covid-19 in early May, 2021. Vandana Shiva – Bill Gates: Planetary Savior or Demonic Force?Conspiracy Theories vs. Con’s Piracy FactsAired Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with World-Renowned Activist Vandana Shiva, Author of “Oneness vs. the 1%: Shattering Illusions, Seeding Freedom”“Humanity is facing an existential crisis – do we want to continue to exist or not?” — Swami BeyondanandaBill Gates has become at least as much of a controversial figure as Donald Trump, particularly now that the question of massive and mandatory vaccinations have emerged in the wake of the COVID crisis. One narrative paints him as a benevolent benefactor determined to use technology to save humanity from disease and starvation. The other narrative portrays him as a megalomaniacal technocrat bent on owning all the world’s seeds, controlling our food supply, and subjecting the world’s population to mass surveillance, top-down control, and depopulation.Which of these is right, or better yet, which is closer to the truth? This week on Wiki Politiki, we are honored to have with us the world-renowned food and justice activist Vandana Shiva, who has been tracking Bill Gates’ activities on behalf of the “green revolution” – hint, it is neither – for decades, and she has some strong evidence-based opinions. In other words, she can help us move past the conspiracy theories with some con’s piracy facts. Because of time zone challenges, we are re-playing an interview I did with her last fall, and it is more pertinent than ever. Dr. Vandana Shiva trained as a Physicist. In 1982 she founded an independent institute, the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology dedicated to high quality and independent research to address the most significant ecological and social issues of our times. In 1991 she founded Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seeds. Her books, ‘The Violence of Green Revolution’ and ‘Monocultures of the Mind’, have become basic challenges to the dominant paradigm of non-sustainable, reductionist agricultural practices. Time Magazine identified her as an environmental hero in 2003. She received the Right Livelihood Award in 1993 and the 2010 Sydney Peace Prize. She is a member of the World Future Council. Her most recent book, Oneness vs. the 1%: Shattering Illusions, Seeding Freedom, exposes the 1%’s model of philanthrocapitalism, which is about deploying unaccountable money to bypass democratic structures, derail diversity, and impose totalitarian ideas based on One Science, One Agriculture, and One History. Instead, Shiva calls for the resurgence of:• Real knowledge• Real intelligence• Real wealth• Real work• Real well-beingIf you are ready to address some inconvenient truths that shall set us free, please join us this Tuesday, March 9th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.You can find Vandana Shiva online at https://www.navdanya.org/site/And order her most recent book here: https://www.amazon.com/Oneness-vs-1-Shattering-Illusions/dp/1645020398Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! This past year has forced many of us to transfer our practices into the digital realm, and while this has been done for the safety of our communities, billionaires and tech giants have no desire to see us sever ourselves from the perceived convenience technology provides us. So we must ask ourselves, to what extent does our quality of life become reduced when we relinquish our sovereignty for the sake of convenience? How does our reliance on technology diminish our collective skillset? Our relationship with Earth? Our ways of thinking? In this week’s episode, Dr. Vandana Shiva joins us to discuss how we are being set up to become accessories to the digital world and how we can reclaim our intellectual freedom and sovereignty from the hands of digital dictatorship. Vandana provides us with compelling examples of Monsanto’s targeted erasure of Traditional Ecological Knowledge and simultaneous acquisition of the world’s largest data corporations, and the correlation between philanthrocapitalism and the World Intellectual Property Organization. Dr. Vandana Shiva is a leader in the International Forum on Globalisation and of the Slow Food Movement, the current Director of Navdanya and of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Ecology. “The answer to climate change is the yoga of the earth” Greetings Rainbow Warriors, It’s me Magda Freedom Rod It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the first episode of Season 7 of the Visionary Lifestyle Podcast. I’m coming to your day from Bali Indonesia. Please listen to the previous episode for an introduction to everything that’s coming up this season. Right now, I am so excited to jump right into today’s show. Our guest today is Dr. Vandana Shiva. She is an Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, and alter-globalization  author who has written more than 20 books..[2]She received the Right Livelihood Award in 1993, an honor known as an "Alternative Nobel Prize". Vandana Shiva has spent much of her life in the defense and celebration of biodiversity and indigenous knowledge. She has worked to promote biodiversity in agriculture to increase productivity, nutrition, farmer's incomes and It is for this work she was recognized as an 'Environmental Hero' by Time magazine in 2003. She is also enemy #1 of the GMO giant Monsanto. I first met Dr.Vandana Shiva in person in my hometown of Ojai, California where she was presenting an earth day speech at Krishnamurti’s school there. I had also heard her speak and heard of her and her work prior to that, and I’ve got to say, that the first time I heard her speak, she became my shero. I would even go so far as to call her the conscious eating queen. This powerhouse of a woman has been fighting for our food system for decades. She is enemy #1 of Monsanto, the corporation who now owns over 90% of our seeds and is intent on owning our food system which would, of course, give them control of our population. Monsanto, of course, is the producer of most GMO seeds which are poisoning our bodies and our precious mama earth. I was fortunate enough to hear Dr. Shiva speak two years in a row at the International Yoga Festival in Rishikesh, and was honored to be invited to her organic biodiverse farm named Navdanya, for an eco-feminism retreat after the festival. This was a tremendously inspirational trip. I can still remember waking up in this pristine ecosystem, with the early morning rays of the sun shining down on the fields. The birds were singing, the butterflies were everywhere, and I could feel the health and vitality of the land in every cell of my being. I taught yoga to some of the students who were there on internships and attended all of the doctor's lectures on eco-feminism. We ate meals together all harvested from the land there and surrounding farms. 1000% organic, and vegetarian of course. I was blessed enough to get this one on one time with her. Our conversation starts as a continuation of a chat we started that morning, about her bindi. Have you ever noticed Vandana Shiva’s bindi is huge compared to the ones you usually see? I love everything about this conversation. In this interview we discuss: consciousness world hunger eco feminism biodiversity seed freedom capitalist patriarchy conscious eating This episode is packed with the wisdom of this tremendous activist that has dedicated her entire life to protecting your and our food system. I also recorded some of her other lectures that I will put out as bonus episodes so be on the lookout for those. Check the show notes for links to Dr. Shiva’s websites and books. Find those at visionary-lifestyle.com/podcast I deeply enjoyed producing this show for you, I’m really so proud of this interview, and I hope you get some inspiration from it and will join us on our common mission of practicing Yoga for the Earth Enjoy and namaste https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandana_Shiva https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0794476/ http://www.navdanya.org/navdanyas-biodiversity-conservation-farm http://www.navdanya.org/publications https://www.amazon.com/Vandana-Shiva/e/B001JO49BM

Welcome to year two of the Visionary Lifestyle Podcast!I thank you for your patience for the launch of this second year, I had a couple little delays as I’m traveling in India, I’ve been busy with the International Yoga Festival, wifi is an ongoing issue, I’ve had some technical issues with my phone, as well as my computer. I actually recorded this intro days ago but my computer froze before I could save it and then my wifi went down ha. There are challenges to this digital nomad thing when travelling in 3rd world countries and it’s taken me some time to accept that but thankfully ,I’m finally getting this out to you. I’m currently in Risihikesh, India. I attended the International Yoga festival where it was like a big reunion. I saw a lot of the yoga teachers I interviewed during the festival last year, and I see this family growing and strengthening. I’m considering bringing a group of yogis with me here next year, shoot me an email if that interests you!~ This time of year draws the spiritual masters or “gurus” to Rishikesh. In fact the place is named Rishikesh because the great sages and rishis have been drawn here to the foothill of the Himalyas for eons. I’ve been attending satsangs, which is essentially a spiritual talk by a “guru”. There are loads of them here, with these spiritual masters coming from around the world and sharing their spiritual wisdom with their followers. If you’re not yet following my instagram check that out for some behind the scenes stories of what I’m up to and what’s coming up on the show. That’s @ visionary_lifestyle_guide. So here we go, this is the launch of year two of the podcast. There’s sooooo much in the pipeline for you that I just can’t wait to share! This year will start with season 5 which began in Thailand, continued in California and then went on to Europe. The following season 6 was recorded in Lisbon at the DNX Global Conference which is all about the digital nomad lifestyle I’ve been embracing for the last year. Or, as I like to call it, digitalyomad, as in yoga nomad. My new favorite hashtag is #yogaallovertheworld. yay!. If you’re interested in taking your work on the road and traveling more , you don’t want to miss those interviews with people who are living that lifestyle now. And I’m recording season 7 now in India, and will continue on back to Bali again for the Bali Spirit Festival again this year. I just returned from Navdanya, Vanadana Shivas organic farm in rural India and was fortunate enough to interview her about her activism and what conscious eating looks like for her today. She touts saving the seeds and our food system as the answer to climate change and improving health and food security for all sentient beings. She is truly my shero and interviewing her was a true honor. I took an eco feminism course and toured herfarm which was incredibly inspiring to see. Check my instagram to see pics from that trip. The best part was the seed bank where they’re storehousing organic and heirloom seeds. Did you know that Monsanto now owns over 90% of the seeds on our planet? That means this giant poison company control our food system guys. Vanadana Shiva is their biggest enemy, and working on the daily to ensure that we the people have safe and abundant food. So make sure you watch for her episode in season 7. I’m so excited to see what unfolds with the podcast this year. I’ve made countless valuable friendships with the people I interviewed last year, brought you what I hope are inspiring and empowering content through those interviews, and look forward to so many more. Have you listened to my episodes from the last year? If you’re new to the podcast I invite you to go back and look through and listen to the ones that call you. And it’s also a good idea to go back to episode #1 in order to get my take on what we’re focusing on here, and what’s really important in the Visionary Lifestyle. If you’re wondering why I always address you as Rainbow Warriors, I explain that there too. This is an ongoing and open invitation for YOU to join our tribe and participate in activating your highest potential. Ok so next I’m going to play a short piece I recorded at the beatles ashram here in Rishikesh on a very special day, and then coming up next will be Season 5, starting with my interview with the digital nomad founders of the DNX Global Movement which we recorded in Thailand. If there are people or topics you’d like me to cover, send me an email and share your thoughts. If you’ve enjoyed the show it’s never too late to write us a review on itunes, and as always, I love hearing from you so just drop me an eMail to: guide@visionary-lifestyle.com Enjoy and Namaste

In 1982, she shifted her focus to inter-disciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy and moved back to India. Dr. Shiva is the founder of Navdanya, a participatory research initiative dedicated to the preservation of native crop species, the rejuvenation of indigenous culture and knowledge, and to support and direction for environmental activism. She is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including the 1993 Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) and the 2010 Sydney Peace Prize. On March 29, 2014, Dr. Shiva spoke at the North Centennial Community Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada at the invitation of a local collective known as Power House Producers in association with the Women's and Gender Studies Students Association, and the University of Winnipeg's Womyn's Centre. Her speech followed a so-called Feast of forgotten foods which highlighted a meal prepared by local activists with organic ingredients all provided by local farmers for an audience of about a hundred people. Preceding the talk was an announcement about a Bill moving through the Canadian House of Commons known as Bill C-18, the Agricultural Growth Act which critics argue undermines traditional farm practices by ensuring the intellectual property rights over new varieties of seeds to the plant breeders that generate them and force farmers to pay a royalty to them when crops from those seeds go to market.

In 2001, well-known food activist Vandana Shiva spoke to an audience in Vancouver at an event sponsored by the Basmati Action Group. It was during that time that the company RiceTec, had recently attempted to patent basmati rice, a staple of Indian and Pakistani livelihoods and diets. The Basmati Action Group was formed to launch a North American-wide boycott on all products produced by the company. Vandana's lecture addresses the patenting of life and the genetic modification of food. She speaks of the crisis in India that continues today, where over 40,000 farmers have taken their lives as a result of what she refers to as genocide by the multinational pesticide and seed companies. The broadcast explores the new Green Revolution being pushed onto the African continent by the Bill and Melinda Gates and Rockefeller Foundations. We explore the company Bayer, and their role in the recent contamination of the global supply of rice with an unapproved variety that had been genetically modified. To mark the new millennium, this year's Reith Lectures are delivered by five different thinkers, each eminent in a different field. At the end of the run, the Prince of Wales presents his own views on the topic in a roundtable discussion with all five lecturers. The Millennium Reith Lectures deal with one of the most pressing issues of our time - sustainable development. The fifth lecture, delivered from Delhi, is by the Founder Director of the New Delhi Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology, Dr Vandana Shiva. Dr Vandana Shiva, who is the founder of Navdanya, a national movement promoting diversity and use of native seeds, examines Poverty and Globalisation, and talks about the recognition and legitimisation of authority in society. She believes that we are wrong to be smug about the new global economy and that thinking about the impact of globalisation on the lives of ordinary people is vital to achieving sustainability. world systems should move away from ones based on fear and scarcity, monocultures and monopolies, and appropriation and dispossession.
