How do you feel about the word negotiation? When most people hear the term negotiation, they usually think of tense conversations, fighting for what you deserve and a battlefield mindset. Yet what if that whole concept – that of thinking about negotiation as a form of combat – meant you never actually get what you want? What if treating it as a zero sum game, with one winner and one loser, prevented the most valuable outcomes from ever even being discussed? My guest today believes negotiation is the opposite of combat. Today's Guest Christine McKay is the Founder and CEO of Venn Negotiation, a company through which she turns clients into world-class negotiators. As a powerhouse negotiator Christine has worked with roughly half of the Fortune 500 companies on the planet, negotiated billions of dollars worth of deals – more often than not from what was presumed to be the weaker side of the table. She is also the author of ‘Why Not Ask?: A Conversation About Getting More.' A step by step guide to no longer giving up on what you really want, simply because you don't know how to ask for it.However, incredibly, that resume isn't the most amazing thing about Christine. For that you need to rewind a couple of decades. To when Christine was a homeless single mother living in a trailer and surviving on welfare. How she went from that situation, to eventually earning an MBA at Harvard University, then onto one of the most globally sought negotiators in the world – is a story that will blow your mind.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinemckay/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mckaymchInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mckaymch/ You'll LearnHer journey from a homeless single mother to globally sought-after negotiatorThe key mistakes people make in the negotiation process and how to avoid themWhy you can't negotiate by talking about the past – only about the present. The unbelievable power of creating your own advisory board. Why ‘no' is always the most powerful word in any negotiation. Finally, why you need to know your values, before you start negotiating your value.References and links mentionedhttps://whynotaskbook.com/Christine offers a course that gives people the basics for business negotiation and how to effectively negotiate to get more of what you want in her VennMasters Level 1 course. Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Inside Influence Podcast! Do you consider yourself a strong negotiatior? A lot of people don't. That's because most people view negotiating as a win/lose debate and it makes them uncomfortable. But, have you ever considered the road to being a better negotiator may begin by changing your paradigm? What if you were able to see a negotiation simply as a conversation about a relationship? No winners or losers, just two individuals striving to achieve a mutually beneficial relationship. On episode 48 of the Career PROgressions Podcast, author, speaker and Global Negotiation Strategist, Christine McKay is going to share her knowledge about and experience with this approach to negotiation. She's negotiated with nearly half of the Fortune 500 companies and she's going to teach you how to bring a higher level of negotiation to your career! Check out her VennMasters negotiation course HERE.
When people hear the term negotiation, they usually think of tense arguments and nerve-wracking meetings. To think that negotiation boils down to whether someone gets the better deal of the bargain is to operate from a place of scarcity. Today's guest, Christine McKay, will be the first to tell you that negotiation doesn't have to be a “win or lose” scenario. It's not about winning; it's about building relationships and being curious about your counterpart. Christine is the Founder and CEO of Venn Negotiation, a company through which she turns clients into world-class negotiators. She has worked with roughly half of the Fortune 500 companies and negotiated on behalf of hundreds of small and mid-sized businesses. Before becoming a negotiation powerhouse doing billion-dollar deals, Christine had to overcome adversity. She was homeless, on welfare, and a single mother. On top of that, she struggled with alcohol dependency. Against all odds and the prediction of many people, she got a scholarship from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and later earned her M.B.A. degree at Harvard University. In this episode, we discuss her journey from a homeless person to a world-class negotiator, key mistakes people make in the negotiation process, and the mindset and steps that will make you a negotiator extraordinaire. Christine's story blew me away, and I think you'll get a lot of value out of it. Changing the Nature of Negotiation with Christine McKay https://www.vennnegotiation.com/#When most people think of the word 'negotiation,' it evokes thoughts of Sun Tzu's "Art of War," chess, or even bullies in the boardroom. They use zero-sum thinking and operate from a place of scarcity, where if one party gets more, the other automatically gets less. There are clearly defined winners and losers even when they think they may be trying for a win-win scenario. At Venn Negotiation, we find that way of thinking outdated.Take Our Negotiation Style Quiz Now!Vero's Voice Magazine The community magazine Vero loves to read!

When most people think of the word 'negotiation,' it evokes thoughts of Sun Tzu's "Art of War," chess, or even bullies in the boardroom. They use zero-sum thinking and operate from a place of scarcity, where if one party gets more, the other automatically gets less. There are clearly defined winners and losers even when they think they may be trying for a win-win scenario. At Venn Negotiation, we find that way of thinking outdated. Venn Negotiation is an educational and consultative negotiation firm that aims to change the nature of negotiation. Offering individual and group negotiation training and negotiation services, Venn Negotiation helps individuals and businesses get more of what they want and provides them with the tools and techniques to negotiate for it. Negotiation cannot be like a transaction between two people. You want the complete trust from that person during and after the negotiation. Even if that means acting silly or asking stupid questions just so you can start to build that relationship. Companies can get a little too serious and say, “If it ain't broke, don't fix it.” However, there's no harm in a little fun and experimentation. Companies like Netflix, TikTok, or Clubhouse are all trying something completely different. They are also continuing to grow because of their teamwork and non-toxic work environment. Discover how to help your team by learning through play with your host, Christine McKay and her fellow guests, Jeff Harry and Lauren Yee. Jeff and Lauren have been working together for over a decade and are still teaching companies and entrepreneurs on how to strengthen your business by learning through play. Come and listen so that you can integrate play in your inner circles and bring the fun to the negotiation table.Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! https://venn.zone/

In this episode, he shares with Christine McKay the key lessons he learned when working in another country. He talks about the differences he had found between emotional negotiation and ego, the contracting process between Guatemala and the United States, and how each country deals with conflict. Many people have this impression that negotiations are ruthless and that one party always comes out gaining the upper hand. This isn't exactly accurate as Bethany Sloggett illustrates what should be happening during a good negotiation. As the Head of Consulting and Design at YouNique Kitchens & Bath, Bethany finds herself every day in negotiation rooms filled with men. In this conversation with Christine McKay, Bethany highlights the importance of staying at the negotiation table, especially if you'll lose leverage by leaving, sharing a story about continuing with a negotiation while nursing her four-month-old baby at a table with three men. She explains how wearing our heart a little bit more on our sleeves and showing our authentic selves will take our negotiations, conversations, and partnerships to a new level.
Our preconceived notions can be the undoing of a long-term relationship. Often, people go into a negotiation and make decisions based on short-term outcomes, not thinking about the long-term implications. As a result, they end up losing in the negotiation over time, even if they feel like they won at the moment. In this episode, Christine McKay has a one-on-one talk with Jillian Michaels, a renowned fitness expert and a certified nutritionist, about how to go around a situation that involves making decisions that would bring a win-win situation to any negotiation. As a fitness trainer, Jillian deals with people's mindsets all the time and constantly encouraging and pushing them out of their comfort zones. She explains how her training as a fitness instructor moved her forward in her negotiations and finding solutions that work for everybody. She also talks about the win-win situation mindset and how she overcomes the challenges of managing her own business and negotiations.
In the negotiating process, one of the main factors that will dictate the outcome is how you present yourself. Christine McKay brings back app developer Roman Tirone for an episode redo, discussing the right way to establish your credibility and eliminate awkwardness. He shares his journey from being groomed into the entertainment industry, only to pivot into a completely different sector because of the pandemic. Emphasizing the negotiation processes commonly encountered by entrepreneurs, he shares his challenging yet fulfilling first project at The Rumble Company, as well as his collaboration with people from different cultures and walks of life.
