Widespread adoption of circular economy principles like reuse and recycling could reduce Ireland's carbon emissions by up to 32%, according to the Circularity Gap Report Ireland. The report analyses Ireland's material consumption and carbon emissions profile and the potential for circular economy strategies to mitigate environmental impacts. A robust evidence base is required to ensure that the targets selected for Ireland's forthcoming Circular Economy Strategy are appropriate. The Irish Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications has commissioned this Circularity Gap analysis, conducted by impact organisation Circle Economy, to understand Ireland's material and carbon footprint for key systems such as the bioeconomy, the built environment, and manufactured goods. This report provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis of Ireland's current national material flows and level of circularity based on a methodology that allows for international comparisons of Ireland's performance relative to peer countries. Circularity Gap Reports establish a baseline circularity level for a local, regional or national economy. They provide insights into policy interventions to help boost circularity and provide the tools to monitor progress. According to the study, Ireland's residents consume 22 tonnes of raw materials per person per year, surpassing both the European average of 17 tonnes per capita and the estimated sustainable level of 8 tonnes per capita. Rapid economic growth over the past years has led to a surge in material consumption in Ireland. This trend has put increasing pressure on ecosystems within the country and abroad, driving the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. For example, Ireland's plastic waste generation has more than doubled in just ten years. Moreover, Ireland is one of the few EU countries where territorial emissions have only recently started to decline relative to 1990 levels. The report outlines specific pathways to reduce material consumption by 29% and cut carbon emissions by 32%, while tripling the country's circularity rate from 2.7% to 8.4%. For example, circular strategies in construction - such as building retrofitting, using bio-based materials and repurposing vacant spaces - could deliver a 12.6% reduction in material use and a 17.3% reduction in emissions. However, if business as usual continues, the sector's carbon footprint is expected to increase fivefold by 2030. This makes construction a priority area for targeted policies. With two-thirds of Ireland's land dedicated to agriculture and 11% to forestry, the bioeconomy has emerged as another priority sector for change. The report recommends accelerating the shift to sustainable and organic farming practices, sustainably increasing forest cover and addressing labour shortages and skills gaps in the sector. Additional measures include boosting efficiency and industrial symbiosis in manufacturing, switching to cleaner mobility options like public transport bicycles and electric cars, and promoting a sustainable lifestyle based on buying fewer products and using them longer. These measures could reduce Ireland's environmental impacts while maintaining the high living standards achieved over the past decades.

Ever wondered how big the food waste really is? What strategies and solutions are put in place by the private and public sector to combat food waste? How can data be used to society's advantage to overcome such a problem? And what you steps you can take to reduce food waste one step at a time, at a local level? Sebastian Moorhead talked to Yasmina Lambachar, a food waste researcher at Circle Economy, to get a better insight at combatting food waste not only at an individual level, but also at a global scale.

A livello globale, il Circularity Gap Report 2021 del Circle Economy – che rileva la circolarità dell'economia mondiale – ha segnalato che, raddoppiando l'attuale tasso di circolarità dall'8,6% (dato 2019) al 17%, si possono ridurre i consumi dei materiali utilizzati dalle attuali 100 alle 79 gigatonnellate e tagliare, di conseguenza, le emissioni globali di gas serra del 39% l'anno. Un traguardo certo non facile, per raggiungere il quale l'Italia si sta però, dando parecchio da fare. Il Rapporto nazionale sull'economia circolare nel 2021, pubblicato per il terzo anno consecutivo dal CEN ( il Circular Economy Network ) ci informa, infatti, che i parametri analizzati oggettivamente dallo stesso Cen in collaborazione con l'Enea (l'Agenzia nazionale per le nuove tecnologie, l'energia e lo sviluppo economico sostenibile), assegnano al nostro Paese il primato dell'economia circolare, tra i principali Paesi europei. La Commissione Europea, nel suo recente Piano d'azione per l'economia circolare, ha evidenziato come, con un modello lineare di economia, basato su un alto consumo di risorse e di energia, non sia assolutamente possibile raggiungere la neutralità climatica e come l'economia circolare rappresenti, al contrario, un elemento basilare per ottenere un'accelerazione del processo di svolta verso un vero sviluppo sostenibile. In altre parole, i Paesi – secondo la Commissione - devono riuscire a realizzare una quota di produzione maggiormente orientata all'utilizzo di materie prime rigenerative, da conseguire attraverso la riduzione della quantità di materiale usato nella preparazione di un bene o nella fornitura di un servizio. Il rapporto realizzato dal Cen ha valutato, sotto questi punti di vista, la performance delle cinque maggiori economie europee, collocando l'Italia al primo posto con 79 punti davanti a Francia (68), Germania, Spagna (65 punti entrambe) e Polonia (54). Da solo il nostro Paese dà all'Unione Europea un contributo assai rilevante nell'ambito della creazione di posti di lavoro nei settori dell'economia circolare: infatti, con 519.000 occupati, l'Italia si attesta in seconda posizione dopo la Germania (680.000 occupati). Insieme i due Paesi totalizzano quasi un terzo dell'occupazione nel settore. Nel settore specifico del riciclo dei rifiuti urbani, nel 2019, secondo i dati Ispra ( l'istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale ), avendo raggiunto un risultato del 46,9%, l'Italia si piazza ancora al secondo posto dopo la Germania; se però, passiamo nel campo del riciclo generale di tutti i rifiuti, il risultato sale al 68%, staccando nettamente la media europea (57%). Berlino è, invece, ben lontana dal raggiungere il risultato italiano in quanto ad utilizzo circolare di materiali, con il 12,2%, rispetto al nostro il 19,3%: una grandezza che ci pone sullo stesso livello della Francia ( che è al 20,1% ) e, comunque, nettamente al di sopra della media comunitaria che all'11,9%. Inoltre, l'Italia ha già riciclato il 73% degli imballaggi che usa, mentre solo per il 2025 l'Europa ha fissato il target del riciclo del 65%. Secondo un altro rapporto, quello di Circoeconomia, emerge, inoltre, come il Nord Italia rappresenti, in questo contesto, addirittura un'eccellenza mondiale. E tra le diverse Regioni, spicca il Piemonte che, nei 17 indicatori considerati da questo studio, si colloca al secondo posto nel ranking globale, immediatamente alle spalle dell' Olanda. L'economia circolare è, pertanto, una opportunità che consente all'Italia di risparmiare, ogni anno, 23 milioni di tonnellate equivalenti di petrolio e l'emissione di 63 milioni di tonnellate di anidride carbonica. In questa fase storica, il Recovery Fund può, quindi, indubbiamente fornire un aiuto importante al consolidamento di questo settore nel nostro Paese. Non a caso, i programmi che il Ministero della Transizione Ecologica ha presentato nel suo Rapporto sull'Economia Circolare sono assai ambiziosi, prevedendo di rafforzare la capacità d'azione del sistema-Paese nella circolarità dell'elettronica, della plastica, della gestione dei settori idrici e dell'edilizia. His experience in building global design agencies and teams began in 2008, when he founded one of the world's first online graphic design agencies, Cradle of Design. I april 2020 vedtok byrådet i Amsterdam sin femårsstrategi for sirkulærøkonomi. Strategien bygger på "smultringmodellen", en økonomisk modell utviklet av den britiske økonomen Kate Raworth. Smultringmodellen sier at økonomien må befinne seg mellom den indre og den ytre ringen i smultringen. Den indre ringen representerer de basale behovene som må oppfylles for at mennesker skal kunne leve gode liv (hentet fra FNs bærekraftsmål). Den ytre ringen representerer vårt fysiske livsgrunnlag, planetens tålegrenser. I denne episoden forteller økonomiprofessor Ove Jakobsen om smultringøkonomien, og vi snakker med Ilektra Kouloumpi fra Circle Economy om hvordan Amsterdam arbeider med å omsette smultringmodellen til en konkret handlingsplan som kan brukes av alle byer som vil legge om til smultringøkonomi. A doughnut cooked up in Oxford will guide Amsterdam out of the economic mess left by the coronavirus pandemic. Amsterdam is embracing the so-called doughnut, an economic model that envisions “a world in which people and planet can thrive in balance”. The brainchild of Kate Raworth, a senior research associate at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute,  the doughnut is a way of thinking about economics based on the priorities set out by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The city of Amsterdam wants to be a regenerative and inclusive city for all citizens while respecting the whole planet. But how to realise the radical and ambitious vision to make such a thriving city?  Ilektra Kouloumpi is one of the leading strategists from the international team who downscaled the Doughnut Model to the city of Amsterdam. Together with Ilektra we will simplify the concept of circular economy through practical examples, get a better understanding of the disruptive model of the Doughtnut Economy and learn how Amsterdam has become the first city in the world to embrance the Doughnut Model as the starting point for all public policy decisions. Ilektra Kouloumpi is Senior Cities Strategist at Circle Economy, a social enterprise that accelerates transition towards a circular economy. Currently, she leads the Thriving Cities Initiative pilot programme, taking cities on a journey to become socially just and environmental safe places within the planetary boundaries. Her journey to become a senior expert in sustainable urbanism and circular economy has included roles as buildings engineer, EU policy analyst for the built environment, and academic researcher and consultant on smart and sustainable cities.

Ninety-nine percent of what we purchase - we don’t really need. The world is suffering because of our actions. Poorly-managed landfills cause litter. Incinerating waste produces toxic substances. These are some problems we are faced with when it comes to waste management. Stemming from these issues are people devoted to finding creative solutions in address these problems. What is a circular construction strategy? How can digital solutions help the transition to a circular economy? What does a circular city really look like? Continuing population growth and urbanisation are projected to add 2.5 billion people to the world’s urban population by 2050. TIMELINE - Australian Andy Ridley is the man behind the climate action Earth Hour, with which he got more than 7000 cities since 2007 to extinguish their lights. ’The fact that we were able to mobilise so many people is unique to this project. The power of communication is underestimated.’Ridley moved to Amsterdam last year for Circle Economy, an organisation dedicated to the so-called circular economy where there is no waste. ‘I have become motivated by frustration. You think something’s not possible somewhere in the system, but right there you want to change it. ‘In the circular economy there’s is enough for everyone, forever’, says Ridley. ‘Everything can be reused, and be designed as such.’
