Send in your music story!A birthday crown, a Charizard Loungefly, and a brand‑new Switch 2 set the stage for a wild ride through shiny hunts, DLC megas, and the strange magic of pacing a game you love. We get honest about Pokemon Legends ZA: the fun of guaranteed shinies, the feel of the world, and why the journey beats the postgame grind. Then the bombshells: DLC teases with Mega Chimecho, Mega Basculegion‑style reveals, Lucario Z, and a level cap blasting past 100 for the first time in 30 years. It's a shake‑up built for highlights, not homework, and we break down why that works.Life doesn't pause for play. We map out screen‑time rules for a toddler—TV as background, no iPad babysitting—and how handheld sessions fit into family evenings. The conversation spills into “What Grinds My Beans,” our running segment on everyday chaos: tapping gift cards like chips, slapping terminals instead of holding a card still, and the art of ordering without treating baristas like NPCs. It's funny because it's true, and it's useful because five seconds of patience can save everyone five minutes of hassle. Then we tackle the Black Friday saga: waking up at 4:30 AM for a hyped “first 100” Target bag only to discover tickets were quietly handed out hours earlier. What counts as a fair promotion, and what does a brand owe the people who show up in the cold? Sprinkle in some adulting—brake rotors, oil change myths, and the difference between a maintenance reminder and a warning light—and we land on a theme that ties it all together: plan well, play smart, and fight for transparency.Big news: we're launching two new shows. The Dark Side of Music with Danny Otto digs into true crime across music history—Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, Tupac, the 27 Club, and beyond. Off The Record brings loose, in‑person conversations, games, and the kind of banter that made you hit play today. DEFENDANT: Tori Amos EVIDENCE: Cloud Watcher California Red Blend SCENE OF THE CRIME: "The Finest Vineyards in California" -- Hey friend — welcome to the chaos: we opened a grocery-store red called Cloud Watcher (hello, green-pepper nose and dark-plum cocoa vibes), wrestled over a billion points in Corrections Corner, and brought our dog Hermes along to supervise. We sip, we sigh, and we trade childhood-cloud stories while debating whether cloud-watching is relaxing or suspiciously boring. Then things get deliciously melodic because our “defendant” today is Tori Amos. We peel back her origin story — piano prodigy at Peabody, early L.A. band experiments, exile to the UK, and the piano-driven masterpiece Little Earthquakes — and run through highlights from Choirgirl Hotel to Boys for Pele, Night of Hunters and beyond. There's talk of kazoo deep cuts, mood rings, curly hair aesthetics, and why Tori's lyrics made us fall in love with poetry all over again. Of course we couldn't resist a game: a twelve-question cross-examination where we read lyrics and guessed whether they were Tori or Not-Tori. There were surprises (Fiona Apple, Tracy Chapman, The Cranberries), triumphant wins, a couple of tequila—I mean wine—sips for wrong answers, and a lot of nostalgic 90s energy. You'll hear about favorite songs (Crucify gets a special shout), concert memories, and how husband, Fact Checker and our little group fit into the Tori fandom saga. Gossip alert: we dive into the messy 90s drama — Trent Reznor, Courtney Love, and the career fallout that left some fans scribbling love and hate in equal measure. We don't shy away from the heavy stuff either: there's a frank moment about trauma, loss, and how those themes weave through Tori's music. Between parenthetical jokes about Publix ads, soup-watching disasters, and a recurring helicopter/hematite-cloud dream, this episode is equal parts nerdy music-nerd history and cozy chat over a $10 bottle that punches way above its price. We also bouquet in a little wanderlust — Cornwall homes, haunted castles, and the dream of living like older, well-rested rich people with perfect towels and fireplaces in every room. So pour a glass, settle in, and listen for the lyric-guessing triumphs, the wardrobe nostalgia (yep, we reunited with our high-school T-shirts), and the way Tori's songs keep looping back into our weird little lives. If you're a Tori obsessive, an accidental listener, or just here to find out whether that wine is worth a splurge — welcome, you're home.

Transformative Leadership Conversations with Winnie da Silva
“It's not that you already know the answers or already are perfect at something, but that you believe that you can get there.” - Julienne SilvermanConfidence can look rock–solid from the outside… but inside, it's usually a mix of courage, doubt, experience, improvisation, and a whole lot of personal growth. And sometimes the biggest boosts to our confidence come from the moments we'd never expect. In this episode, I sit down with investment banking executive Julienne (Julie) Silverman for a truly grounded and honest conversation about what confidence actually feels like and how it evolves over the course of a career. Julie shares stories from her early days managing the legendary New York restaurant Pastis all the way through her senior roles on Wall Street today, and she opens up about the shifts, pivots, and lessons that shaped her leadership. You'll hear us discuss:How Julie defines confidence in a way that feels surprisingly freeing and why it has nothing to do with perfection. The unforgettable Courtney Love story that taught her how to handle pressure and trust her instincts long before she worked in finance. What the “arc of confidence” looks like and why confidence often dips when you step into bigger, more challenging roles. How she navigates ambiguity in entrepreneurial environments while keeping both daily decisions and long-term goals in view. The subtle, gendered expectations around confidence at work and the small habits that help women show up with more presence.Julie's go-to advice for younger women: introduce yourself with your full name, take a literal seat at the table, and own your spot in the room. Why being fully out at work has strengthened her leadership, and how authenticity creates deeper relationships and real confidenceResourcesJulienne H. An introduction to an obscure but powerful timing technique called recurrence transits, which occur when specific planetary alignments in the birth chart are repeated by transits in the sky, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Nick Dagan Best. Unlike standard transits that form aspects to specific points in the natal chart, a recurrence transit occurs when a planetary alignment found in a birth chart repeats in the sky between those same two planets. For example, if a person was born with a Venus-Jupiter conjunction in their birth chart, then an important event will happen in their life in the future when Venus and Jupiter again form a conjunction in the sky. The episode uses the analogy that specific planetary alignments in the birth chart act like a personal theme song; when the planets repeat the same alignment in the sky, it is as if that music starts playing again, signaling a pivotal turning point where the natal potential of the birth signature becomes awakened through a resonance between past and future. The episode opens by exploring the history and transmission of the technique, which is relatively unknown in the English-speaking world at the present time. Nick shares how he learned the method from the late Michael Lutin in the 1990s, while Chris traces potential roots back to early 20th-century German astrology and ancient Hellenistic texts like Vettius Valens. A key point emphasized early on is how these mundane planetary recurrences operate independently of aspects to natal placements, forcing a conceptual expansion of what defines a transit, and demonstrating how planetary cycles can be tied into important turning points in a life narrative even without direct contact with birth chart placements. To demonstrate the technique in practice, most of the episode is spent presenting a wide range of biographical examples as case studies, and focusing primarily on conjunctions in order to keep things simple and compelling. Case studies include the technological breakthroughs of Steve Jobs and Max Planck, the artistic peaks of Vincent van Gogh and Madonna, and the political rises and falls of figures like Richard Nixon and Joe Biden. The workshop also examines how retrogrades can both extend and intensify the importance of certain recurrence transits, as seen in the lives of Edward Snowden and Charles Manson, and we also touch on shared recurrences in relationships, such as Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. The conversation concludes with a broader philosophical discussion on what this technique implies about the nature of astrology, touching on concepts like simulation theory and the definition of astrology as a map of time. This episode serves as a comprehensive foundation for understanding recurrence transits, providing astrologers and students with a powerful, empirically driven tool for predictive work and biographical analysis that complements traditional methods. This is episode 513 of The Astrology Podcast. Brandon and Lindsy welcome a guest who cracks open a hidden dossier on culture-war psyops—where protest songs, psychedelics, and carefully scripted narratives intertwine. Listeners are led through a labyrinth of acid parties that weren't so “free,” Laurel Canyon salons doubling as distribution hubs, and elite families underwriting a psychedelic renaissance that looks far less organic than advertised. From Lennon to Hendrix, Cobain to Tupac, the names you thought were untouchable are revealed as pawns in a much bigger game. This conversation pulls the velvet curtain back on COINTELPRO echoes in hip-hop, the strange survival of “sex & rock 'n' roll” while “no drugs” artists vanished, and the shift from vinyl manipulation to viral manipulation. The Rocky Horror Picture Show initially flopped upon its release but rose to become a midnight cult classic, inspiring audiences to interact with the film through live performances and spirited audience participation. The late Mick Rock-famous for his work with music legends like David Bowie, Queen, and Blondie-was granted exclusive access during the six weeks of filming. His camera captured not only the action on set but also the essence and energy that made Rocky Horror unique. "I could snap whatever caught my eye, stirred my imagination," said Rock. This creative freedom resulted in an extraordinary collection of images that offer a fresh perspective on the film. The book features a foreword by Richard O'Brien, the creative force behind Rocky Horror, who reflects on the film's incredible journey to becoming a theatrical staple with the longest-running release in history. Interviews with cast members, Mick's personal notes, and other production ephemera are beautifully compiled in a stunning four-color format. The book also contains quotes from the legion of fans of the movie, including Joan Jett, Billy Corgan, Courtney Love, Juliette Lewis, Jinkx Monsoon, Duff McKagan, Anna Sui, Karen O, Trixie Mattel, Peaches, Norman Reedus, Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira, Mistress of the Dark), and many, many more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Did Courtney Love Try to Shut Him Down?
Live Through This (1994) by Hole is a raw, emotionally charged album that captures the turbulent spirit of the 1990s alternative rock scene. Released just a week after the death of Kurt Cobain and only months before the tragic passing of bassist Kristen Pfaff, the record is both deeply personal and culturally resonant. Courtney Love's fierce vocals cut through layers of punk aggression and melodic grunge, blending rage, vulnerability, and biting wit in equal measure. The album balances abrasive guitar riffs with surprisingly hook-laden choruses, offering anthems that swing between chaotic catharsis and melodic accessibility. Songs like “Miss World” and “Violet” tear into themes of identity, femininity, and self-destruction, while tracks such as “Doll Parts” expose raw longing and fragility. Its lyrics dissect beauty standards, fame, and the dark undercurrents of love and loss, giving the record a confrontational yet deeply human edge.Often hailed as Hole's defining work, Live Through This stands as one of the most significant feminist statements in rock. It pushed grunge into more emotionally complex territory, resonating with listeners who saw themselves in Love's unapologetic anger and aching vulnerability. Today, it's remembered not just as Hole's breakthrough but as a landmark alternative rock album of the 1990s.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? Noel catches up with Jordon Zadorozny, who goes by the recording and performance name of Blinker The Star. They released three albums on major labels, the third, the critically acclaimed, "August Everywhere", featured the single, "Below the Sliding Doors." Jordon worked with Hole's Courtney Love and contributed to their "Celebrity Skin" album. Jordon collaborated with his idol, Lindsey Buckingham, on a couple of songs. Two decades later, Jordon received retroactive song-writing credit after it was found that he accidentally plagiarized his song "Swan Song". Blinker The Star released the highly entertaining covers album, Arista, in 2021, featuring Madonna's "Holiday."

Jon Herold and Zak Paine take on one of the most infamous deaths in music history: Kurt Cobain. The hosts revisit the official story of Cobain's 1994 “suicide,” then unpack new testimony from Joe Burns—a man who claims he was there the day Cobain died. From missing police reports and the heroin dosage that defies logic to Courtney Love's suspicious phone call and the alleged involvement of Seattle's grunge scene, Jon and Zak dig through decades of lies, cover-ups, and chaos. With trademark wit and skepticism, they challenge the narrative that Nirvana's frontman took his own life, exploring the dark intersections of fame, money, and manipulation.

It's time to flip through another vintage gem of a magazine! This week, we're revisiting Drew Barrymore's Us magazine cover story from November 1998. Written by Johanna Schneller, the charming feature captures Drew in her late-'90s glow—living in a solar-powered treehouse, running Flower Films from its colorful offices, and playfully declaring she never wants to be “stinky-poo-poo girl.” The piece is sprinkled with sweet quotes from friends and collaborators like Nancy Juvonen, Courtney Love, and Luke Wilson, plus lists of Drew's loves and hates. Rounding it all out are adorable beachside photos by Marc Baptiste, with hair and makeup by her longtime partner-in-glam, Jillian Fink Dempsey.Join our Patreon!Visit us on the web:@howdoyoudrewpod / howdoyoudrew.com@drewseum / thedrewseum.com
Episode 428 of Friends Talking Nerdy is a celebration of women who didn't just rock the stage but bent the rules of the game, reshaped culture, and left scorch marks on the history of music. Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into their favorite women rock and roll stars, not just rattling off names but unpacking what made these artists lightning rods for change. The conversation moves track by track like a lovingly curated mixtape, which they made availble on YouTube. They start with Pat Benatar's anthemic “We Belong,” discussing how Benatar combined powerhouse vocals with a sense of vulnerability that made her a radio staple without softening her edge. From there, they barrel into the raw energy of Janis Joplin's “Move Over,” talking about how Joplin embodied a feral, unapologetic energy that made her voice feel like a declaration of war. Kathleen Hanna and Le Tigre's “Much Finer” prompts Aubrey to bring in the riot grrrl movement, with Tim marveling at how Hanna's blend of activism and art feels more vital now than ever. When Jefferson Airplane's “Somebody to Love” comes up, they highlight Grace Slick's psychedelic snarl and how she stood toe-to-toe with the male counterculture icons of her era. Joan Jett's “Bad Reputation” naturally gets both of them fired up—Tim noting how Jett weaponized punk's simplicity, while Aubrey points out that her career longevity is proof she wasn't just a “bad girl” novelty. They lean into Stevie Nicks' “Edge of Seventeen,” marveling at her voice's mythic qualities and the way she carved out her own witchy rock persona that still resonates across generations. From The Pretenders' “Back on the Chain Gang” to Blondie's “One Way or Another,” the hosts highlight the unique blend of grit and sophistication Chrissie Hynde and Debbie Harry brought to the table. Tina Turner's “Private Dancer” inspires a passionate sidebar on resilience, survival, and the way Turner reinvented herself against impossible odds. And Hole's “Celebrity Skin” brings the discussion full circle, with Aubrey making the case that Courtney Love's voice—half sneer, half scream—was a necessary counterweight to the sanitized pop machine of the late ‘90s.After the amps cool down, the duo pivot to television, giving their first impressions of South Park's Season 27 debut. They note how the new season takes aim at the current American political landscape with a sharpness and weird clarity the show hasn't always nailed in recent years. Tim points out that the difference between South Park's take on the first Trump Administration years and now is like night and day—back then, the writers seemed shell-shocked, unsure how to lampoon chaos that already felt like satire. Professor Aubrey adds that the new season feels more like the show's golden years, where cultural absurdity is filtered through the bizarre but laser-focused worldview of four Colorado kids. Together, they agree that this season might mark a creative resurgence for the long-running series. The episode balances music history and cultural commentary with the usual Friends Talking Nerdy flavor—part nerdy scholarship, part passionate fan energy. By the end, listeners get both a playlist of iconic women who changed the sound of rock forever and a thoughtful dive into how South Park still finds a way to speak to the strange moment we're all living through. As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. Send us a textIn this gripping episode, I dive back into the explosive circles drawn by butler Alfredo Rodriguez in Jeffrey Epstein's mid-2000s black book, a pivotal piece of evidence submitted to the Justice Department, continuing our probe into the scandalous figures linked to Epstein's world. I start with Peter Thiel's jaw-dropping announcement of his secretive "The Antichrist: A Four-Part Lecture Series" for tech and political elites at San Francisco's Commonwealth Club, hosted by the Acts 17 Collective, teasing his provocative transhumanist views on humanity's future and Palantir's vast contracts with agencies like the CIA, FBI, NSA, Department of Defense, UK's NHS, and Israel's IDF—hinting at a perspective so wild it'll make you question his influence. Then, I shift to the black book's final names, beginning with Courtney Love's multiple circled entries, exploring her chaotic 2000-2005 era of arrests, partying, and a bizarre late-night Epstein-related encounter detailed in her memoir Dirty Blonde that'll leave you stunned. I also tease explosive connections to Leslie Wexner's Victoria's Secret empire, a young model's frequent Lolita Express flights with high-profile figures, Virginia Giuffre's witness list naming major celebrities, and a shadowy network of surveillance systems, shredded evidence, and a Palm Beach neighbor who saw too much—all pointing to a dark web of elite secrets without revealing the most shocking twists. This week, I got to talk with Penny Zang about her debut novel Doll Parts! We dive into her inspiration for the story, the importance of music throughout, and the ways Sylvia Plath's life and writing influenced Doll Parts.Doll Parts SynopsisSome stories refuse to stay buried. For best friends Nikki and Sadie, college was supposed to be a fresh start, a way to blast Courtney Love from car speakers and leave their youth behind. But along with sadness-obsessed girls and intrusive professors, a dark story plagues their small all-women's school: the Sylvia Club, a campus legend surrounding the deaths of multiple Sylvia Plath-adoring students, all written off as suicides. Aspiring writer Nikki finds herself drawn to the tragic tales, so much so that dead girls begin to haunt her dark imagination. As she digs deeper, Nikki soon suspects there's much more to the story - a suspicion that will lead to a tragedy of its own, one that will tear her and Sadie apart. It's been nearly twenty years since Sadie last saw her estranged friend. Now, Nikki is dead, and when Sadie ends up pregnant by Nikki's grieving husband not long after the funeral, she finds herself stepping into her ex-best friend's seemingly perfect life. But the longer Sadie lives in Nikki's eerily preserved home, the more she sees her appear and soon, she's convinced that Nikki is sending her clues from beyond the grave. Because it seems Nikki never stopped looking for answers about what happened to the girls of the Sylvia Club, and she may have been its latest victim. Told in a dual timeline, Doll Parts is a provocative and irresistible debut, at once an exploration of the dark chasms that break apart friendships, an ode to the aching beauty of girlhood, and a sharp portrayal of grief that can physically haunt you. That's a condition marked with manic highs that can last for weeks or months as well as crushing lows of depression, she's had both, you'll hear about that. She's also dealt with psychosis, and has spent time in an in-patient facility. That mental health journey has informed her work as a songwriter and a musician and inspired the songs on the new album. She just turned 30 but she's been performing since high school when she was more or less discovered on YouTube by Courtney Love who helped launch her career.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about.
