What's going on in the country's second-densest craft beer state? The Brewbound team hit the road to Portland, Maine, to find out. While in town for the New England Craft Brew Summit, Brewbound managing editor Jess Infante and senior reporter Zoe Licata checked in with 3 leaders to take the pulse of Maine's formidable (and cheerfully collaborative) craft scene. This special Maine-centric episode kicks off with Maine Brewers' Guild executive director Sarah Bryan. Bryan dishes on the hottest topics impacting Maine brewers right now – including concerns over decreased tourism from Canada – as well as goals for her second year as executive director. “A huge strategic goal of ours is to re-stitch-together a sense of pre-COVID[-19] camaraderie in the industry,” Bryan said. “It's very easy for breweries to feel like they're on an island, there's always something more to be done, the work is never finished, there's never quite enough hands, you can never make enough beer and there's never enough storage. … Being in this role has impressed on me how deserving these breweries are of working channels of communication, creating pathways for them to work together.” The team then chats with Thirsty Pig owner Allison Stevens about the craft beer bar and changes she witnessed in how the craft industry is operating, including distribution consolidation and shrinking sales teams. She also gives tips for how breweries can be the best partners for Thirsty Pig and other retail accounts. Then, Orange Bike Brewing co-founder and CEO Tom Ruff chats about the origins of the gluten-free-dedicated craft brewery, and how the venture has opened his eyes to the amount of consumers looking for GF options, and the impact the availability of diverse beer options has on connecting the community. Brewbound editor Justin Kendall also joins the episode to discuss some of this week's California-centric headlines, including the formation of Sunset Distributing in LA and San Diego and the sale of Anderson Valley Brewing.

The Bangkok Podcast | Conversations on Life in Thailand's Buzzing Capital
Greg interviews the fascinating Wichit Saiklao, godfather of craft beer in Thailand and founder of Chit Beer, with podcast friend Scott Coates sitting in for fun. Khun Chit relates how he first learned about homebrewing while living in the States, and after returning to Thailand and buying a small house on the river island of Ko Kret, he decided to give it a try with a kit he bought on Amazon. Just seven years later, he is a legend of Thai brewing, not just because of his own popular craft beers but also because of his brewing school which now has thousands of graduates. Khun Chit explains his approach to Thai law, which in general prohibits small batch brewing: by focusing on staying under the radar while campaigning to change the law and spreading his love of brewing to his ‘army' of brewers, he hopes to push Thai culture in the right direction. He estimates that there are already tens of thousands of Thai people brewing quietly at home, a number so large that eventually the Thai government will likely have to accept as a fact of life. Greg, Scott and Khun Chit discuss the community of brewers that he has fostered and spread around the country, his ignoble first attempts at brewing, and what drives him forward. Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. And we'll keep our Facebook, Twitter, and LINE accounts active so you can send us comments, questions, or whatever you want to share.

Seltzers and hard liquor have been growing of late and it is hurting sales of craft beer. More from Vineeta and Max Johnson from Bev Source.
We began our show with some 'Made with Love' comforts from Kathleen Bianco of The Crazy Kat and Crave Pitman. Bianco not only grew up baking with her grandmothers, she brought those memories {and love} of baked goods to their businesses. Later on, she and her husband expanded on their business ventures by adding ice cream in addition to introducing new items regularly, including a heavy focus on gluten-free options. So if you're Craving something like Cheesecakes, Cookies, or Mousse Bombs...tune in to our show to find out everything that Crave Pitman and The Crazy Kat offers! "Never give up on your vision, always keep going" are words to live by according to Shamaya "Bella" Oberlton of Rock N Rolls Philly. Since 2016, Oberlton has pursued her dreams of owning Rock N Rolls Philly, beginning with a business that was operated out of her family's home. That same business transitioned into food trucks--and more recently, a brick and mortar location. Speaking of transitioning, stay tuned to hear how Shamaya gives back to the community--offering positions to individuals via reintegration processes. But the biggest benefit of all...a delicious array of unique egg rolls, ranging from savory to sweet, with sides to choose from as well. Our last guest taps into his passion of what local breweries have to offer with his business, BrewedAt. Evan Blum and his friend crafted their business model based on the desire to try what different breweries had to offer on-tap; doing so by trying different flights and discussing them. Now, they turned their fun nights out into a booming business where they track whatever is available to drink, as well as what events the individual spots offer. So whether you are a craft beer aficionado or a novice, BrewedAt can offer one place that showcases whatever you're looking for--all you need to do is look them up to find out!

This week I travel to Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland, Ohio. I sat down with Michael Williams who does brand coordination and marketing at GLBC. During this interview we learn about the oldest brewery in Ohio and how it came to be. We also talked about the history of the building as it pertained to Eliot Ness and the mysterious bullet holes that may or may not have been intended for Mr. Ness. We also discussed the 2023 beer release calendar that recently just came out which included a few new additions like a low cal watermelon wheat, a couple of new IPAs, a new stout, and the latest edition to the GLBC family which is a hard tea that is set to be released sometime in April. During the interview we tried some classics including: Dortmunder Gold, Conway's Irish Ale, Eliot Ness Amber Lager, Dank Demon DIPA, an experimental Hazy, and Barrel Aged Black Out Stout. Season 2, Ep. 4 - Elise Grazzine - Renowned Craft Brew Bar "Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa" in Rome, Italy that puts on Eurhop Roma Beer Festival and Franken Bier Fest - We Discuss Bringing Passion to Your Brewery or Bar; The Touristification of Rome; Differences Between Opening a Business in Italy versus America; What Italians Do Right; What Americans Could Learn from the Italian Way of Life; How Italians View Americans; The Pandemic Effect on Business in Rome; Beers Beers Beers. This is a short one hour episode but it's one of my favorite not just because I got to record it in Rome, Italy! Elise is soft spoken but passionate and has a beautiful accent, born in Rome with a Dutch parent. She has that Roman vitality in her speech, and speaks of Roman glory and soul lost. She caught me off guard with her love of Lord of the Rings books. We recorded it in the taproom, you could feel the age of the building in its walls and in its wooden rafters. There are some background sounds as the entire room watched us record, which was intimidating at first but after a few minutes we forgot they were there. The entire place was probably less that 600 square feet but was constantly packed with regulars and newbies discovering it from reviews, they are known as the best craft beer place in Rome and are known throughout the entire Continent. Their passion for beer and conversation come through immediately. My favorite part may be the front entrance...it's not decorated, it's even a little trashy with graffiti in the typical Rome way and you feel the authenticity and neighborhood love here. It's set in the fairytale setting of Trastevere, a vine covered section of Rome next to the River and the City Center. Put this place on your list to visit for a few beers when you're in Rome next.
In this episode Neil and Will touch (and taste) on the heritage of 'spirits' in Appalachia, as well as the craft brew industry that has taken hold in the region. The guys had the pleasure of sitting down with Oscar Wong, the "Godfather" of Beer in Appalachia and founder of Highland Brewing, the first craft beer brewery in the "Craft Beer Capital of America." Aside from the beer, they discuss the economic impact it has had on the region. Oscar explains how it all started, what the future holds for the local brewery and how he will forever be Appalachian. Take a listen, you might even hear the guys thoughts (and tastes) on White Lightning, what it was like growing up "dry" and one (or two) references to 'Ol Uncle Popcorn.
