Monica Perez on Discerning PropagandaI’m so excited to chat with Monica Perez today. The host of The Propaganda Report podcast, Monica has an uncanny knack for sussing out narrative and spin in news reporting. She can connect almost every news story to some higher-level agenda. Don’t get it twisted, though. She’s not your standard conspiracy theorist, though. She thinks Alex Jones is a limited hangout and Q is a psy-op. She has no time for the theatrics that so often comes along with conspiracy theory, and that’s what makes her so refreshing.LinksThe Prop Report websiteFollow Monica on TwitterPropaganda Report on RokfinBecome a patron of The Propaganda Report on PatreonRecommended Reading: Propaganda, by Edward BernaysFollow me on Twitter and MeWe.Be sure to hit subscribe wherever you’re listening to this so you never miss an episode! "The strongest memory is weaker than the lightest ink." -Chinese proverb, (via Louis Lavelle, La Parole et I'ecriture, Paris, 1947) "...the Hebrew term 'dabar' means ‘word' and ‘event'." -Walter Ong, Orality and Literacy (1982) "...when we speak...we also always express a mood. There are no words uttered without this added spin. The act of saying something is part of the meaning we express, whether we like it or not. We can't separate the *what we say* from the *how we say it*...The same phrase said by ten different people will be ten different experiences - perform ten different events." -Daniel Coffeen and Matthew Deren, A Space For New Things (2020) Sources and Discussion: https://old.reddit.com/r/DilettanteryPodcast/comments/k36jw6/17_ong_and_orality/?
62 Minutes Some Strong Language Daniel got his PhD in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley in 1998. He taught adjunct in the department for many years but after becoming displeased with academia, he started writing independently and doing a series of podcasts. Our friend Daniel Coffeen (Zero Books, Renegade University) returns to help us appraise Todd Phillips’ 2019 Joker. We survey the various controversies surrounding the film while discussing class, resentment (you can use the fancy critical theory/French pronunciation), alienation, and Joaquin Phoenix’s dancerly grace and peculiar improvisations. And we make time to celebrate Marc becoming a citizen of the USA.
Daniel was one of my professors in grad school in San Francisco. His lectures were part of my day to day during my first pregnancy and my first years of motherhood, he had a bigger impact on how I parent, who I am as a mother, than most books or guides I had at the time. I am so thankful that he wanted to come on the podcast and talk parenting with me, I hope he will help you shift your mind like he does mine. I first came across Daniel Coffeen when I listened to his popular 2008 Rhetoric class after the entire semester of lectures was made available online for free by UC Berkeley. His powerful and enthusiastic approach to teaching a traditional academic subject impressed me, and I've been following his career ever since--or at least I thought I had been. As I found out in this interview, there's more to this philosopher, blogger, writer, podcaster, and teacher than I ever knew. In this episode Daniel tells us how he stays motivated after more than a decade freelancing, and how he knits together the seemingly unrelated strands of his successful and distinctive career.
On Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's What Is Philosophy? (1991). How is philosophy different from science and art? What's the relationship between different philosophies? Is better pursued solo, or in a group? Deleuze described philosophy as the creation of new concepts, whereas science is about functions that map observed regularities and art is about creating percepts and affects. With guest Daniel Coffeen. Get the full discussion at partiallyexaminedlife.com.
Ryland talks with his Good Personal Friend (and former professor), Daniel Coffeen, about a whole mess of stuff, including cubist films, the speed of affect, seeing (and not seeing), pedagogy (and its failure), the importance of duration, architecture and separation, among other jokes. There's a lot of jokes. And a lot of personal baggage unpacked (by way of spilling, or simply thru barfing, and definitely in laughing), too, which gets a little gross, but we trust our ramble is, if anything, a lil bit a fun smarts.
