Michael was born and raised in South Africa and emigrated to the UK on a business startup visa. Michael has been involved in all types of printing and branding for the last 25 years, having owned his own printing business for the majority of that time. His branding business in South Africa, Black Peppa, was a member of the local BNI chapter. It was at a BNI chapter meeting one morning that a lightbulb moment happened during an unexpected random incident. This led to the creation of an industry disrupting innovation that saw him get a spot of the South African version of Dragon's Den, The Shark Tank. Following the great exposure of the Shark Tank, Michael was invited to become a member of the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship. This was a phenomenal opportunity to be mentored and to have expert assistance in getting the new concept to market. Michael later on pitched for finance at various pitching platforms and ended up on the pitching stage of the World Cup of start-ups where he came third in the SA finals. The winner went on to pitch in Silicone Valley in the US and win $100 000. The new concept, The Saucy Printing Co. Which is a service that provides live printing onto plates in chocolate sauce took off in the corporate events industry and provided a niche touch to weddings as well. Having moved to the UK, Michael is currently getting the business off the ground and gaining traction for this world first, fun and innovative product. The business is set up in Cambridge and making the most of being in a city dwarfed by the many colleges that make up the University of Cambridge. This ideal location presents many opportunities within the 33 colleges as well the various hotels, conference centers and networking events. Michael has once again joined BNI and belongs to the Fitzwilliam chapter in Cambridge. The business is growing from strength to strength and it looks to be able to franchise in late 2023. It's fair to say that Larren Peart is a data guru who has chartered new boundaries and prospects with data-driven analytics and insights, made accessible in unprecedented ways through his business Blue Dot, full-service market research and strategy consulting company. Founded in 2014, less than 7 years ago, Blue Dot is already making waves, claiming the majority market share for data insights in Jamaica and attracting heavyweight support from the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship, Yes Iyah and SSL Venture Capital Limited just to name a few. Blue Dot is strategically poised to become a future leading market research entity and today we'll find out from its founder, exactly what's helping this business to thrive. Trending Now: Artificial Intelligence Most people think of science-fiction and human-like robots when they hear the term Artificial Intelligence (AI). Well, that only obtains in Hollywood. In the real world, Artificial Intelligence refers to a computer system equipped with intellectual processes that allow machines to discover meaning, generalize, learn from experience and adjust to new inputs. Deep learning and natural language processing are key components of the AI set up and these technologies allow computers to be trained to accomplish specific tasks. The term artificial intelligence was coined in 1956 but the hype around AI has accelerated in recent times, due to increased data volumes, advanced algorithms, and improvements in computing power and storage. More and more industries are growing in demand for AI capabilities including healthcare, retail, manufacturing and banking. While the definition of AI gets more complex and extensive, we're gonna try and share some examples of specific uses of Artificial Intelligence applications in everyday processes and hope they give you a better understanding of what we're working with. For one, smartphones use AI to provide services that are as personalized as possible. Virtual assistants answering questions, providing recommendations and helping organize daily routines are some examples. Language translation software relies on artificial intelligence to provide and improve translations. In addition, smart thermostats learn from human behaviour, how to save energy and although self-driving vehicles are not yet standard, some cars already use AI-powered safety functions in their mechanics. In the fight against covid-19, AI has been used in thermal imaging in airports and in medicine, it can help recognise infection from computerized tomography lung scans. By this rate, AI is sure to heavily impact the future development of health, cybersecurity, auto and creativity to name a few. So it's not a question of when…but how these will be implemented and embedded in our daily activities. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-entrepreneurial-you/message

What difference do we want to make? And Richard (Branson) had a lovely quote that if you're not making a difference in people's lives, you don't have a business." If you're an entrepreneur struggling to find your purpose, this podcast is for you. Nwabisa Mayema, Strategic Partnership Director at the Branson Centre, sits down with Fiona Ross, the Head of Brand and Creative Capabilities at the Virgin group. Fiona has the wonderful job of codifying the Virgin brand DNA so Virgin teams across the world can bring it to life across all aspects of creative expression and experience design. During this insightful interview, she discusses what is the role of brand in business. Why is it important to be purpose-led, and how do you embed purpose into your brand by using examples from the Virgin Group. "Through the journey of entrepreneurship, I've learnt that tenacity is everything, and It's very difficult to be tenacious in achieving your goals as an entrepreneur if you are not living your purpose. That being said, if an organisation has a clear purpose and the leader of that organisation is aware of what that clear purpose is for that organisation. The people within that organisation will also be as clear in terms of that organisation's purpose and leader's purpose." Nwabisa speaks with Ayanda Mzondeki, the founder and managing director of Liyema HR Consulting, a global HR consulting firm that serves some of the biggest multinationals in the engineering and management consulting sectors, about People. At the Branson Centre, we are deliberate about not talking about HR-human as resources- but rather about people, since it's about seeing the people in your business as enablers rather than as a resource or employees. We see people at work and beyond as people. Ayanda echoes this sentiment and as she puts it, Liyema Consulting's success is due to the people who make it what it is! The company has evolved and innovated despite the challenges it faced, especially in the last year, thanks to her people's commitment, tenacity, passion, and excitement for learning. Like us, Ayanda is a big believer in showing up in the world with your purpose in the forefront of what you do! And when it comes to embedding your company's purpose in your people, she maintains that you need to live and breathe your company's values and culture daily. By doing this, you can filter the people who enter your business and ensure you hire the right people. For more on People and purpose, watch the full interview on our Youtube channel.

“People think, well I need to build my product first and then I will find my customers and I'm always trying to dissuade people from doing that because it actually starts with your customer. And it starts with customer discovery and so right at the point where you observe the problem and you think I may have a way to solve that problem, the next thing you do is you start speaking to people.” Tumi Sineke describes herself as a cheerleader of others and loves to watch people grow and develop. She also serves as an Entrepreneur Relationship Manager at the Branson Centre. In this episode of our podcast, Tumi talks about product development and the importance of using product personas and customer journey mapping to develop products that solve problems. According to her, product development begins with customer discovery. Customer Discovery is all about asking the right questions about the problem, gathering insights, and then developing Customer Personas and the Customer Journey. “Purpose for me is a living breathing journey of discovery of what I can contribute to the world, why I'm actually here, and that's been so important for me because it doesn't stop it, it evolves, it grows, it manifests, and it actually pours out into the spaces that I work, the work that I do and the people I'm around.” Pride Mauntlala is a purpose coach with 18 years of experience connecting brands to purpose and profit. Nwabisa sits down with Pride to chat about what Purpose means to her. Over the years, Pride has developed a very clear idea of what her purpose is today. “My purpose is to enlighten and illuminate other people's purpose within them. My superpower is clarity, I create clarity in the spaces that I'm in, and so my purpose is to bring that clarity to others to see what their purpose is.” Pride's cheat-sheet for discovering and articulating your purpose includes asking yourself the following questions: Who are the people, and what are the experiences that are common in my life? (Look for things that are common in your life.) If I don't exercise my purpose, what will the world lose? (Look for the things you do that make other people feel better than they did before you came into the room.) Watch Pride's interview on our Youtube channel. Lorren is one of our Zero Waste Challenge advisory board members and works in the circular plastics economy programme for WWF. The programme primarily focuses on policy, the business sector, and the consumer to drive the systemic change that is required. Instead of focusing on waste management, their focus is on what can be done ‘upstream' in the value chain to prevent waste, and plastic waste specifically. This is what will drive long term change. Lorren gives some great insight into how regulation can spur innovation. A perfect example is the upcoming ban on organic waste to landfill. A perfect example of the opportunities presented by the circular economy and how we can then move towards a circular economy. What are your ideas and how will you rise to the #ZeroWaste challenge? An avid surfer, Rowan has always been aware of waste in the ocean environment, and it has been top of mind in his extensive career in sustainability. Take a listen as Rowan and Nwabisa talk about the dirty game of waste and the opportunities it can present. Most of our waste is a result of large-scale industrial processes, and it includes ‘unknown waste' such as emissions, seepage and environmental contamination. The opportunity for entrepreneurs is questioning how to stop waste from occurring in the first place. How do you change a process so that it doesn't generate waste, and then how do you scale it so that it becomes a solution for an industry? Entrepreneurs are the change agents. They can leapfrog the processes to provide a solution. The ingenuity of new practices will drive a #ZeroWaste economy. Rowan shares some great examples of local entrepreneurs being the change agents that have moved away from take, make, throw away. Share your own examples and stories. ‘In a circular economy there is no waste, there are only materials and flows. Waste entrepreneurs are going to be material managers in the future.' Sally-Anne Kasner is a director at Circular-Vision and a #ZeroWaste Challenge advisory board member for the Branson Centre. Nwabisa chats to Sally-Anne about how we can increase circularity in the system, a fundamental shift from our current linear approach. Their starting point is the question: what is waste? Sally-Anne defines it as man-made concept not found in nature. In nature, it's a nutrient for new life but man has created monstrous hybrids we can't do anything with that ultimately become bigger problems. Recycling shouldn't be seen as the answer. Sure, it's a first step but we need to reduce the waste first through resource efficiency to have a positive knock-on effect down the line to ultimately divert waste from landfill. Circularity addresses how we design our economic system so that we can break our current detrimental linear approach. Have you ever considered waste as a resource? There was a time when waste was simply discarded, and never considered again. As our awareness and conscience has grown, our thinking has shifted and the opportunity presented by waste has grown, especially for impact entrepreneurs. In this podcast, Nwabisa Mayema chats to Dr Linda Godfrey, Principal Scientist at the CSIR, and the manager for South Africa's Waste Research, Development and Innovation Roadmap Implementation. Take a listen as Prof. Godfrey shares fascinating insights about waste as a resource; that ‘circular economy' is not a synonym for recycling but it is about sustainable resource management; and the sharing economy and how changing our thinking about the right to ownership can be a springboard for disruptive thinking. We would love to hear your thoughts and your feedback. Let's have a #ZeroWaste conversation. Visit our website to find our more about the Branson Centre's Zero Waste Challenge.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme exponential health ambassador interviews Lisandra Rickards, CEO at Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship, Caribbean and Founder @ Merrivale Ventures LLC (Soul Career). Rickards has spearheaded the Centre’s strategic shift towards a venture capital model, supporting growth stage entrepreneurs towards investment. She has raised funding for the expansion of the Centre’s mission and relocated its headquarters from Montego Bay to the business hub of Kingston. Ira Pastor comments: On the past few episodes we’ve been taking a virtual around-the-world jaunt, from Palau in the remote South Pacific to Mauritius in the Indian ocean, talking with various thought leaders and visionaries about the themes of innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and economic development. But we have yet to really explore the topic of the ”blue economy”, which is a general term in economics relating to both the exploitation and preservation of the marine environment. According to the World Bank's definition, the blue economy is the "sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems." In addition to traditional ocean activities such as fishing, tourism and shipping, the blue economy entails emerging industries including renewable energy, aquaculture, seabed extractive activities, marine biotechnology, and bio-prospecting. Blue economy also attempts to embrace ocean ecosystem services that are not captured by the market but provide significant contribution to economic and human activity. They include carbon sequestration, coastal protection, waste disposal, and the existence of biodiversity. A 2015 World Wildlife Fund (WWF) briefing puts the value of key ocean assets over US$24 trillion, employing over 3 million people globally. Today, I’m joined by Ms. Lisandra Rickards, who is the Chief Entrepreneurship Officer at the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship – Caribbean, headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica, a nonprofit formed through the philanthropic organization, Virgin Unite, the not-for-profit foundation of the Virgin Group, the British multinational venture capital conglomerate founded by entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson. As CEO, Lisandra spearheads the Centre’s strategy to support growth-stage entrepreneurs towards investment and raises funding for the expansion of the Centre’s mission. She previously headed the Programmes department, developing equity, loan, crowdfunding and grant opportunities, designing and developing the core content for the Centre’s free and open on-line platform, helping to launch the Alpha Angels Network of business angels in Jamaica, as well as doing impact analysis and reporting. Before joining the Branson Centre, Lisandra conducted economic and statistical research for the best-selling books Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics; consulted for the Ministry of Finance in Jamaica; worked at Bain & Company in New York City; and helped develop the global brand strategy for Caribbean conglomerate GraceKennedy. She was previously a Director of Business Development at the RMP Group, a private investment firm based in Orlando, Florida that targeted businesses in the United States currently servicing Fortune 1000 clients for investments of growth capital. Lisandra has an MBA with First-Year Honors from Harvard Business School, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Student Marshal. In 2008, she was featured in the CNBC documentary The Money Chase: Inside Harvard Business School.
