Producer Todd Lieberman, founder of production company Hidden Pictures, recounts the making of one of the most iconic and lauded boxing movies of all time. It had been a dream of Todd's to make a boxing movie, and he knew The Fighter was the one as soon as it came across his desk, but the process from script to screen wasn't an easy one. There were multiple cast and director changes, and the original studio pulled out of the project. But the challenges were blessings in disguise as they allowed director David O. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

This week on "Shat the Movies," we're exploring Three Kings (1999), a gritty, action-packed satire set during the Gulf War. Join us as we dive into the film's blend of humor, action, and social commentary, led by an all-star cast including George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube. Whether you're a fan of the genre or new to the film, get ready for a thought-provoking and entertaining discussion! Plot Summary:In the 1999 war satire Three Kings, directed by David O. Russell, George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube star as a group of disillusioned U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq at the end of the Gulf War. When they discover a hidden map leading to a stash of stolen Kuwaiti gold, they embark on what they believe will be a quick and easy heist. However, their mission takes an unexpected turn, forcing them to confront the brutal realities of war, morality, and human suffering. Major Archie Gates (George Clooney), a cynical and seasoned Special Forces officer nearing retirement, leads the operation alongside Sergeant Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg), a naive reservist, Staff Sergeant Chief Elgin (Ice Cube), a pragmatic soldier, and Private Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze), an unpredictable and reckless grunt. Initially motivated by greed, the team infiltrates an Iraqi bunker in search of gold bars hidden by Saddam Hussein's regime. However, as they navigate war-torn Iraq, they encounter civilians desperately trying to escape oppression, revealing the true human cost of the conflict. As their plan unravels, the soldiers are faced with a moral dilemma: take the gold and escape, or risk their lives to help the suffering Iraqi people. What starts as a self-serving heist turns into an unexpected rescue mission, filled with explosive confrontations, tense shootouts, and moments of dark humor. The film's unique blend of action, satire, and social commentary highlights the absurdity of war while keeping audiences engaged with dynamic storytelling and stylish cinematography. Three Kings remains a standout war film, mixing humor, action, and political critique in a way that feels both entertaining and thought-provoking. Film 8 dalda Oscar'a aday gösterilmiş. Support the show

Free preview episode cross-over with the Bang-Bang Podcast. A madcap collage of American Berserk—that's one way to describe David O. Russell's Three Kings, and it's exactly how Van, Lyle, and screenwriter Kevin Fox dive into it.This two-part episode (the second installment drops shortly) unpacks the film's wild genre mash-up: comic book absurdities collide with nods to Star Wars and Apocalypse Now, all while a grim commentary on U.S. militarism and society simmers underneath. The group digs into how the film disorients viewers with slapstick humor and sudden, brutal violence—like Mark Wahlberg's character, whose torture by an Iraqi soldier (grieving the loss of his son to an American bombing) flips the script on American power. When Wahlberg's character feebly defends U.S. actions as “maintaining stability in the Middle East,” the soldier shoves a CD-ROM in his mouth—a searing metaphor for the imposition of U.S. hegemony. From cartoonish “United States of Freedom” patriotism to cow guts and milk truck explosions, Three Kings might not be the perfect vehicle for telling Americans—and all the privileged in the Global North—what they need to hear. But at times, it sure comes close.Subscribe to the Bang-Bang Podcast to unlock the rest of this episode, Part II, and the entire Bang-Bang catalog: https://www.bangbangpod.com/p/part-i-three-kings-1999-w-kevin-foxFurther ReadingKevin's Website“The Class of 1999: ‘Three Kings',” by Matthew Goldenberg“Three Kings: neocolonial Arab representation,” by Lila Kitaeff“The Gulf War, Iraq and Western Liberalism,” by Peter Gowan“The Gulf War's Afterlife: Dilemmas, Missed Opportunities, and the Post-Cold War Order Undone,” by Samuel Helfont

In this week's episode of Born to Watch, we're diving into a film that strikes the perfect balance between humor, heartbreak, and the hope that pulls us through life's darkest moments. Directed by David O. Russell and featuring a powerhouse cast, "Silver Linings Playbook" has left a lasting impression on audiences since its release in 2012. This film isn't just another romantic comedy—it's a deeply moving exploration of mental health, relationships, and the redemptive power of love."Silver Linings Playbook" tells the story of Pat Solitano (Bradley Cooper), struggling to rebuild his life after a stint in a mental institution. Diagnosed with bipolar disorder, Pat's world is in shambles: he's lost his job, his house, and his marriage. Despite these setbacks, Pat is determined to regain control of his life and win back his estranged wife, Nikki (Brea Bee). He moves back in with his parents, Pat Sr. (Robert De Niro) and Dolores (Jacki Weaver), whose quirks and struggles add complexity to the family dynamic. From the very beginning, it's clear that "Silver Linings Playbook" is not your typical romantic comedy. The film deals with heavy themes such as mental illness and the challenges of recovery, but it does so with a light touch that never feels exploitative or disrespectful. David O. Russell's direction is sharp and empathetic, capturing the chaos and confusion of Pat's life without losing sight of the humour and humanity that make his story so compelling. One of the film's greatest strengths is its ability to portray mental illness in a realistic yet hopeful way. Pat's journey is filled with setbacks and moments of despair, but the film never loses sight of the possibility of recovery. Bradley Cooper's portrayal of Pat is nothing short of remarkable—he brings a raw intensity to the role that is both heartbreaking and inspiring. Cooper's ability to convey Pat's vulnerability and determination makes him a character that is both relatable and deeply sympathetic. It's a performance that resonates long after the credits roll.Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Academy Award for her role as Tiffany Maxwell, is equally captivating. Tiffany is a young widow who is dealing with her mental health struggles, and her unlikely friendship with Pat becomes the heart of the film. Lawrence brings a fiery energy to the role, making Tiffany both fierce and fragile, a perfect match for Pat's more subdued but equally tumultuous personality. Their chemistry is electric, and their interactions blend sharp wit and genuine emotion, making their relationship one of the most memorable in recent cinema. The supporting cast is just as impressive. Robert De Niro delivers a standout performance as Pat Sr., a father who is as complicated as his son. De Niro brings a mix of humour, frustration, and deep-seated love to the role, creating an endearing and exasperating character. Jacki Weaver, as Dolores, provides a softer, more nurturing presence, balancing the family's dynamics with her quiet strength. Together, they create a believable and touching portrayal of a family trying to navigate the challenges of mental illness and the impact it has on their lives."Silver Linings Playbook" is also notable for its depiction of sports fanaticism, particularly how it ties into the characters' lives and emotional states. Pat Sr.'s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles is both a source of tension and a means of bonding within the family. This subplot adds another layer of authenticity to the film, grounding it in a specific cultural context while also highlighting how people use rituals and routines to cope with life's uncertainties. The film's pacing is brisk, and its narrative keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. Russell's script, adapted from Matthew Quick's novel of the same name, is tight and witty, filled with dialogue that is as sharp as it is heartfelt. The story unfolds in a way that feels organic, with each scene building on the last to create a sense of momentum that mirrors Pat's journey towards healing and self-acceptance.Cinematographically, "Silver Linings Playbook" uses a mix of close-ups and wide shots to create a sense of intimacy and immediacy. The handheld camera work gives the film a raw, almost documentary-like feel, drawing the audience into Pat's world and allowing them to experience his highs and lows firsthand. This visual style, combined with the film's vibrant colour palette, adds to the optimism that underpins the story, even in its darkest moments. The soundtrack perfectly complements the film's tone, featuring a mix of classic rock and contemporary hits. Songs like "My Cherie Amour" by Stevie Wonder and "Girl from the North Country" by Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash provide a nostalgic backdrop that enhances the emotional resonance of key scenes. Danny Elfman's subtle score also adds to the film's mood, underscoring the characters' emotional journeys without overwhelming the narrative. One of the most remarkable aspects of "Silver Linings Playbook" is its ability to blend humour and drama so seamlessly. The film tackles serious issues—mental illness, loss, and the struggle to move forward—yet it does so with a lightness that never feels forced. The humour arises naturally from the characters and their interactions, providing moments of levity that make the film's more poignant moments all the more impactful. As the film progresses, Pat and Tiffany's relationship evolves unexpectedly. What begins as a tentative friendship rooted in shared pain gradually blossoms into something deeper. Their connection is not a fairy tale romance but a realistic portrayal of two people who find solace and strength in each other's company. The dance competition they enter together becomes a metaphor for their journey—awkward, messy, but ultimately beautiful in its imperfection."Silver Linings Playbook" is a film that resonates on multiple levels. It's a love story, but it's also about family, healing, and the pursuit of happiness in the face of adversity. The film doesn't offer easy answers or neat resolutions, but it does provide a sense of hope—a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is the possibility of finding a silver lining. In conclusion, "Silver Linings Playbook" is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates entertaining and thought-provoking films. With its exceptional performances, sharp writing, and sensitive portrayal of complex issues, it stays with you long after the credits roll. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

The Merc with the Mouth and Logan have officially taken the title of highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with Deadpool & Wolverine barely edging out 2019's Joker from that honor. As of this recording, the MCU romp has accumulated $1.14 billion. And while that's a tough ticket to beat, other late summer movies are tracking for big openings as well with Alien: Romulus debuting globally at more than $180 million and Tim Burton's sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, eyeing a potential $80 million opening - which would make it the biggest September opening of all time. Lucasfilm announced Tuesday that this year's new show The Acolyte will not receive a second season. The show was incredibly divisive among fans, though critically was well-received. Showrunner Leslye Headland had pitched ideas for a second season, but those will not come to fruition now. Sony Pictures released an extended look at their upcoming Spider-Man villain movie, Kraven the Hunter. The movie releases December 13 and has a star-studded cast featuring Russell Crowe and Ariana DeBose with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the Titular role,. The new promo provided a slightly longer look at the Rhino, played by Alessandro Nivola. It's the story that dominated the Marvel fandom last week - when Beau DeMayo claimed his credit will be removed from season two because he shared fan art for Gay Pride in June. DeMayo cited this as quote “...the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while working on #XMen97 and #Blade.” Marvel quickly released a statement, responding to DeMayo's claim that it was his behavior, called “egregious” in the statement, which was the cause of his loss of credit as well as his termination. Sources following these statements claimed that an agreement had been reached regarding social media around X-Men'97 and DeMayo breached that contract. Other sources claim DeMayo's termination was due to sexual misconduct, though no internal reviews have surfaced. Camila Mendes, who starred in the CW series Riverdale, will play Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films' live-action take on Masters of the Universe and will star opposite Nicholas Galitzine, who is playing the role of He-Man. Marvel Comics announced a Kahhori: Reshaper of Worlds one-shot that will bring the character from season two of What If? into comics. Writer-director David O. Russell has cast Nicolas Cage to star in the lead role for Madden, the Amazon MGM Studios drama about the life of NFL coaching and broadcasting legend John Madden. "Will & Grace" creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, with executive producer Ryan Murphy, are bringing Hulu a comedy about chosen family. Starring executive producers Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer as well as Nathan Lee Graham, and Linda Lavin, this series follows three gay best friends who, after an unexpected death, decide to embrace their golden years together in sun-soaked Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. Apple TV+ has renewed Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, for a second season. Derek Connolly, a franchise writer with a resume that includes the Jurassic World movies, has been tapped to write a live-action adaptation of the Sega video game Eternal Champions for Skydance. Puck Magazine's Matt Belloni is reporting that Mattel, who had been shopping a Barbie animated film, has entered talks with Illumination to produce it and Warner Brothers and Greta Gerwig are reportedly “not thrilled” about it. Amazon's Prime Video has canceled My Lady Jane, the period drama which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show's first and now only season.
