In this episode, Al interviews Dr. Joyce Baptist, a professor in the Couple and Family Therapy Program at Kansas State University, on the topic of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy (recorded 6-7-21). Dr. Baptist's current work focuses on examining the efficacy of clinical interventions to mitigate suffering from traumatic childhood events using EMDR. Dr. Baptist describes EMDR and shares how a therapist uses EMDR to work with their clients. Although EMDR is typically thought of as a therapy that is used for patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Dr. Baptist has conducted some very promising research on the use of EMDR for the treatment of depression. Kristen Boice is a licensed marriage and family therapist, Close The Chapter podcast host, a member of the American Association of Family and Marriage Therapy, American Counseling Association, and EMDR International Association, as well as a trained EMDR clinician. Her goal is to inspire us to get on the path of becoming more self-aware, taking ownership of our “stuff” and acknowledging the person we most want to be—so we can become them. Kristen brilliantly helps shed the shame that surrounds trauma recovery in this conversation with Nicole.
EMDR therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing has been proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, and panic disorders, by resolving unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. Our brains have a natural way to recover from traumatic memories and events. This process involves communication between the amygdala, the hippocampus, and the prefrontal cortex. While many times traumatic experiences can be managed and resolved spontaneously, they may not be processed without help. Stress responses are part of our natural fight, flight, or freeze instincts. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create feelings of overwhelm, of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Stephen Dansiger, a master EMDR therapist. Dr. Dansiger developed the MET(T)A Protocol—a system combining Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy—which aims to combine Buddhist Mindfulness and EMDR Therapy. Dr. Dansiger has practiced Buddhist mindfulness for over 30 years, including a one-year residency at a Zen monastery. He is the author of five books covering clinician self-care, Buddhist psychology, anger management, EMDR Therapy, and the 12 step process. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Dansiger talk about how EMDR therapy is different from other therapies, how it affects the brain, and who can benefit from it. Dr. Dansiger also walks us through what an EMDR therapy session looks like, and he shares stories of patients who have experienced EMDR therapy and what it has meant for them in their life. In this episode, we dive into: -What is EMDR therapy (4:55)-Traumatic memories and where they’re stored in the brain (8:19) -What an EMDR therapy session looks like (13:23)-What happens in the brain that makes EMDR therapy so powerful (26:39)-Case studies from Dr. Dansiger’s practice (35:48)-The best way to explore EMDR therapy and where to find a therapist (42:30)For more on Dr. Dansiger you can follow him on Instagram @drdansiger, on Facebook @drstephendansiger, on Twitter @drdansiger, and through his website http://www.drdansiger.com/Also mentioned in this episode:-EMDR International Association - https://www.emdria.org/-The Institute for Creative Mindfulness - https://www.instituteforcreativemindfulness.com/-Trauma and the 12 Steps: An Inclusive Guide to Enhancing Recovery by Jamie Marich - https://amzn.to/367UuUa-Trauma and the 12 Steps: A Trauma Responsive Workbook by Jamie Marich and Dr. Stephen Dansiger - https://amzn.to/36izbiO-Trauma and the 12 Steps: Daily Meditations and Reflections by Jamie Marich and Dr. Stephen Dansiger - https://amzn.to/3jYcFAp-Clinical Dharma: A Path for Healers and Helpers by Dr. Stephen Dansiger - https://amzn.to/3p5gFmKFor more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and on YouTube @dhrupurohit. The phrase psychological trauma can be roughly translated as “the wound of the soul”. Contemporary neuropsychology shows us that the wound is not metaphorical, as this poetic-sounding phrase might suggest, but rather a real one, detectable in the brain’s neural networks. To understand what these wounds look like, how we acquire them, and what we can do about them, the Brain Health podcast team interviews a practitioner of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR), Isabel Fernandez. A cognitive-behavioral psychologist and a psychotherapist, Fernandez is trained in EMDR therapy and currently serves as the president of both EMDR Europe (a professional association of EMDR therapists) and its Italian branch (EMDR Italy). Besides discussing psychological trauma treatment, Fernandez also shares her rich knowledge of childhood trauma and trauma symptoms. EMDR Europe was founded in 1999 with a mission to use EMDR treatment to help people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotional trauma, as well as mental illness, to overcome their issues. Having started with a few hundred, the association is now 23 000 therapists strong, and has 31 national committees in Europe. Furthermore, they work with EMDR International Association and EMDR Research Foundation within EMDR Global Alliance, and promote the therapy in the Middle Eastern and African countries. They often provide psychological first aid where there is a high risk of trauma - refugee hotspots, and sites of terror attacks and tragic accidents. Are there experiences in your life that you just can’t “get past”? We all have those memories that seem to crop up again and again, bringing anxiety, depression, and other effects. What if these memories are tied to a pregnancy or postpartum experience? You can see how this might be difficult for a woman to work through on her own. Even traditional talk therapy is not always effective at clearing through these feelings. Today we are discussing the benefits of using a therapy model called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help women. Bethany Warren has been interested in this modality as a treatment for some time and has a passion for women’s mental health issues. She has worked in this field for 20 years, specializing in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, also working with women who experienced birth trauma, pregnancy loss, infertility, adoption, and surrogacy. She is certified in EMDR and the trauma processing lens and attachment model guides most of her work with clients. She is passionate about coaching and guiding parents through their adjustment to new roles and assisting women who have children with medical and other health-related issues. She has worked in hospital and outpatient psychiatric settings and is now in a group private practice. Bethany serves on boards and community organizations that promote women’s health and wellness. She is also an adjunct professor at a local university in San Diego and supervises clinicians working toward their licenses. Show Highlights: EMDR has been used mainly in treating veterans with PTSD, but now is a tool found to be useful in many areas, including maternal mental health The connection between EMDR and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep The differences in memories that have been fully processed and those that are “free floating” The statistics: 12% of pregnant women and 9% of postpartum women meet the PTSD criteria, and 34% of women report having a traumatic birth experience How EMDR has impacted Bethany’s practice with more insight-oriented therapy that processes memories the way the brain already knows to do The components of EMDR therapy include eye movement, tapping, and headsets with sounds---these can be used separately or in combination These tools are used to process memories and negative beliefs in the correct part of the brain How does it help? “The memory becomes unstuck” For the therapist, treatment involves less talking and more observing How the therapy works without making clients “take a trauma bath” in the experience they’ve learned to avoid EMDR does NOT involve sitting with a therapist and talking through your traumatic experiences My personal experience with the power of EMDR therapy in getting past stuck feelings and deep-rooted traumas How EMDR helps with early attachment repair, early memories of shame and failure, and repeated harmful patterns The leading researchers on EMDR: Carol Forgash, Amy Robbins, Andrew Leeds, and Claire Stamrood Bethany’s advice: Find a trained and certified EMDR therapist Those who should NOT do EMDR include anyone who is psychotic or currently using substances or is in current chaotic circumstances Hopeful messages of success in how clients have responded and been able to move past the things they never thought they could Resources: Bethany’s website: http://balancehealth.org/therapist_bethany_warren.html Follow Bethany on Instagram: @bethanywarrenlcsw http://www.birthtraumaassociation.org.uk http://www.emdria.org/ EMDR International Association http://pattch.org Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Birth http://www.solaceformothers.org Solace for Mothers after Traumatic Birth http://tabs.org.nz Trauma and Birth Stress

EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and ReprocessingUnlike other forms of psychological disorders, the core issue in trauma is reality.- Bessel A. van der Kolk - The Body Keeps ScoreUnlocking The Past With EMDRFarnsworth Lobenstine is a clinical social worker living in Amherst, MA. He's an Approved Consultant for the EMDR International Association. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy is one of 3 therapies approved internationally for the treatment of PTSD - to embrace events, to master them, from the dark halls of the past. Because it treats the body-mind, and not just the thinking-brain [the part that is the primary focus/objective for talk therapy], it has also proven to be very useful in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and many other psychological disorders. EMDR has proven to be an effective treatment for complex trauma and dissociative identity disorder when appropriately modified. He trained in EMDR in 1999 and served on the National Faculty of the EMDR Institute since 2001. This interview is quite compelling and adds considerably to options for resolving past trauma. He's experienced, intelligent and reasonably opinionated - an excellent mix! Don't miss Farnsworth - love that name! Personal Ed. Note: The use of EMDR treatments remain so frequently overlooked. Although I don't provide EMDR myself as a therapist, I've worked with numerous well trained EMDR practitioners and certified EMDR trainers since 2003, and find it remarkably, indeed pervasively useful in everyday psychotherapy practice. This 166 CBJ Episode doesn't entirely cover the fact that this technique works for adolescents as well - more on that specific age range coming later. Also, at this time in 166 CBJ Episodes, Farnsworth is the first practitioner/trainer who specifically discusses this proven, useful EMDR process for our listeners. And he won't be the last. We do have much more to learn about the EMDR How.
