In this episode, Amy Sylvis is joined by her dear friend Emily Kramer-Golinkoff, a remarkable advocate living with advanced cystic fibrosis (CF). Emily shares her journey, revealing how her experience with a fatal lung disease has paradoxically fostered an abundance mindset – driving her to focus on what truly matters. As the founder of Emily's Entourage, a nonprofit dedicated to accelerating research for those with rare CF mutations who do not benefit from current treatments, Emily discusses the importance of health, purpose, and resilience. She also touches on the stark realities faced by the final 10% of the CF community and emphasizes the need for equity in healthcare. Despite the challenges, Emily's story is one of profound clarity, gratitude, and a relentless pursuit of a better future for all those affected by CF. More about Emily: Emily Kramer-Golinkoff is Co-Founder of Emily's Entourage, an innovative 501(c)3 that accelerates research for individuals in the final 10% of the cystic fibrosis (CF) population that do not benefit from existing mutation-targeted therapies. Since 2011, Emily's Entourage has awarded millions of dollars in research grants, launched a now-acquired CF gene therapy company, developed a patient registry and clinical trial matchmaking program to accelerate clinical trial recruitment, and led worldwide efforts to drive high-impact research and drug development. The organization has been featured in media outlets, including New York Times, STAT, CNN, Yahoo, AOL, People, The Philadelphia Inquirer and more.   Emily has a master's degree in bioethics and certification in clinical ethics mediation from the University of Pennsylvania, where she also completed her undergraduate degree. Dr. John P. Gluck is being honored with PETA's Trailblazing Advocacy Award for being a shining example of ethics in science. The one-time animal experimenter, who studied with the infamous Harry Harlow, describes his own transformation from animal experimenter to a compassionate bioethicist committed to a cruelty-free science. In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Gluck talks about his childhood, his studies in college, and his professional life. As a young boy, John Gluck was kind to animals. But as a scientist, he was mentored by the notorious vivisector Dr.Harry Harlow at the University of Wisconsin. Then something clicked. He began to see the animals as patients, not tools of science. Gluck's book, "Voracious Science and Vulnerable Animals" has become a guide for scientists, especially of a new generation, seeking to practice a science aligned with their ethical identity. Gluck talks with Emil Guillermo about the ethical journey he's taken and admits he remains haunted by the faces of the animals he experimented on. But many people passionately believe one or more of these conspiracy theories. They consume countless books and videos, join like-minded online communities, try to convert those around them, and even, on occasion, alienate their own friends and family. Why is this, and how can you help people, especially those closest to you, break free from the downward spiral of conspiracy thinking? In Escaping the Rabbit Hole, author Mick West shares over a decade's worth of knowledge and experience investigating and debunking false conspiracy theories through his forum, MetaBunk.org, and sets forth a practical guide to helping friends and loved ones recognize these theories for what they really are. Perhaps counterintuitively, the most successful approaches to helping individuals escape a rabbit hole aren't comprised of simply explaining why they are wrong; rather, West's tried-and-tested approach emphasizes clear communication based on mutual respect, honesty, openness, and patience. West puts his debunking techniques and best practices to the test with four of the most popular false conspiracy theories today (Chemtrails, 9/11 Controlled Demolition, False Flags, and Flat Earth)―providing road maps to help you to understand your friend and help them escape the rabbit hole. These are accompanied by real-life case studies of individuals who, with help, were able to break free from conspiracism. Rebecca Vallas is a senior fellow at The Century Foundation, where her work focuses on economic justice. Vallas joins TCF after seven years at the Center for American Progress, during which she helped to build and lead CAP's Poverty to Prosperity Program, in a range of roles, including as the program's first policy director and managing director, and later as vice president. During her time at CAP, Vallas also helped to establish CAP's Disability Justice Initiative—the first disability policy project at a U.S. think tank—as well as the organization's criminal justice reform work. Much of Vallas's policy and advocacy work flows from her years as a legal aid lawyer. In partnership with her legal aid alma mater, she co-developed the “clean slate” model of automated, automatic criminal record-clearing that is now law in Pennsylvania, Utah, and Michigan and advancing in additional states—while advancing national momentum for removing barriers to economic opportunity for justice-impacted individuals and families. In 2019, she co-founded the Clean Slate Initiative, a national organization supporting state efforts to adopt clean slate policies. Vallas previously served as the deputy director of government affairs for the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives, working to protect and strengthen the Social Security disability programs, including as co-chair of the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) Social Security Task Force. Forever a legal aid lawyer at heart, Vallas spent several years representing low-income individuals and families at Community Legal Services in Philadelphia, where she began her work as a Skadden Fellow, and was the inaugural recipient of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association's New Leaders in Advocacy Award. Vallas has authored dozens of policy reports on antipoverty policy, income security, disability policy, access to justice, and criminal records/reentry policy; testified before Congress and state legislatures on numerous occasions; and been cited and quoted in media outlets across the country. She is also the creator and host of Off-Kilter, a nationally distributed podcast about poverty, inequality, and everything they intersect with. Vallas serves on the Board of Directors of the National Academy of Social Insurance and is a member of the Academy's 2020–2021 Economic Security Study Panel. Vallas was twice named to Forbes magazine's “30 Under 30” for law and policy, and later to Emory University's “40 Under 40.” She received her law degree from the University of Virginia and graduated summa cum laude from Emory University, where she received a bachelor's degree in psychology. In a past life, she was an operatically trained mezzo soprano. She's the proud mother of four rescue kitties. Pete on YouTube Pete on Twitter Pete On Instagram Pete Personal FB page

Today we speak with Alaskan Robin Bronen about her vital work in addressing the severe climate crisis unfolding throughout the Arctic region where temperatures recently reached 38C in a region that is meant to stay frozen all of the time! Though often ignored by much of the world, what happens in the Arctic will affect us all. As permafrost melts, as pack ice melts, as glaciers melt, not only does human habitation become increasingly difficult, but this is accompanied by the release of massive quantities of methane gas which is a far worse contributor to worsening climate change than CO2. Thousands of Alaska's indigenous residents are facing the prospect of permanent relocation, and resultant landlessness and homelessness with only sporadic government support to these increasingly vulnerable populations. Episode 29 is a wake up call for everyone, everywhere, so please listen closely and determine how best you can help to stop these horrible developments. Jointly Venturing again would like to thank Robin for today's episode and for her amazing work on behalf of the people of the Arctic and beyond. We dedicate Episode 29 to the indigenous people of Alaska and throughout the Arctic who by no fault of their own stand to lose everything as climate change threatens their very existence. Robin Bronen lives in Alaska, works as a human rights attorney and has been working with Alaska Native communities since 2007 on the issue of climate-forced relocation. She is a senior research scientist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Arctic Biology. She is also the cofounder and executive director of the Alaska Institute for Justice, a non-profit agency that is the only immigration legal service provider in Alaska, houses a Language Interpreter Center, training bilingual Alaskans to be professional interpreters, and also is a research and policy institute focused on climate justice issues. She worked with the White House Council on Environmental Quality to implement President Obama’s Climate Change Task Force recommendation to address climate displacement. She works as an expert on climate-forced planned relocations as a member of the advisory group for the Platform on Disaster Displacement, an international consultative process intended to build consensus on the development of an international human rights and protection agenda addressing the needs of people displaced in the context of natural hazards, including the effects of climate change. Her research has been featured in the Guardian, CNN, and others and she regularly presents her research at conferences focused on climate change adaptation, disaster relief reduction and climate change and population displacement. The Alaska Bar Association awarded her the 2007 Robert Hickerson Public Service award and the 2012 International Human Rights award. The Federal Bureau of Investigation awarded the Alaska Institute for Justice the 2012 FBI Director’s Community Service award, the International Soroptimist’s awarded her the 2012 Advancing the Rights of Women award and Victims for Justice awarded her the 2014 Advocacy Award.

He’s the son of architect Alden Dow, who took a sharp left from the Dow family chemical business and became a world-class Modernist architect based in Midland Michigan.  You’ve heard a lot over the last few years about Columbus, Indiana, but Midland ranks right up there as one of the most remarkable Modernist enclaves in America.  Susan Bandes is Professor of Art History and Director of Museum Studies at Michigan State University. She ran MSU's Kresge Art Museum which is now the Broad Art Museum and curated exhibitions on Frank Lloyd Wright, and American Modernism. She teaches Renaissance and Baroque Art, Modern Architecture, Curatorial Practices and is author of Mid-Michigan Modern: From Frank Lloyd Wright to Googie.  She’s also an expert on a chain  called Dawn’s Donuts. She was appointed to that position in July 2001 after serving as the Center's outreach director and education coordinator for four years and facilitating the Center's Bereavement Peer Support Program as a volunteer for three years. As executive director, she spearheaded a capital campaign that began in 2005 and raised $2.8 million to provide a permanent home for the Center's vital programs. In 2011, she oversaw the Center's expansion of its bereavement support services into Maine's York County, establishing a satellite Center site in Sanford. Additionally, she was among the founders of America's Camp, a national summer camp provided a network of grief support "buddies" in its service to children and siblings of firefighters and police who died on September 11, 2001. In her career at the Center, she produced a significant expansion of the Center's program to train providers and volunteers nationwide in the volunteer peer-support model to help grieving children and families. Locally, she has guided the Center's leading role in providing grief support services to schools and civic associations; for example, the Center's Multicultural Program works with Portland middle schools to support refugee and immigrant students. As a founding member of the National Alliance for Grieving Children, she continues to participate on its Advisory Council and help shape its annual national symposium. She has presented at many national conferences on the topic of grief and trauma, and she was the recipient of the 2008 Advocacy Award from the New York-based National Foundation for Grieving Children, Teens, and Families. She has served on the cabinet of the United Way of Greater Portland, and she also been a member of the Auxiliary to Mercy Hospital since 1994, including two years as president.
